I like how routers get more and more badass-looking and I hope they continue to look more like Starcraft buildings

Pretty much. It's good enough for Americans' shitty broadband infrastructure and people are putting more traffic on mobile networks anyway.

I honestly wouldn't mind if cellular data does to home internet what cellular phones did to landlines. Maybe I should post that in the "hopes for 2020" thread.

We're approaching the limits already of 802.11ac throughput for single streams. The progress in the next couple of years will be in active antennas with active signal shaping (active beamforming) to increase range and broader usage of MU-MIMO and 1024QAM. All of that is expensive right now, and most consumers don't want to spend north of 500 dollarydoos on a router.

Or, just get a edgerouter-x ($50) a gigabit switch of your choosing and/or a Ubiquit WAP (~$75).

Both work great and setup is pretty straightforward.

Also throughput is limited by the end device in 99% of use cases. Routers could support 10GbE but there's no point when it's not in any consumer products

This may sound stupid but for example if a one antenna has 10 meters radius doesn't that mean all antennas have 10 meters radius and the signal won't arrive to more than 10 meters

Most people don't even use ac protocol yet. It's already a few years old. Bean forming and good automatic WLAN/security features should already be the norm in a 50€ box but they aren't. Manufacturers don't actually give a shit.
