I tried to do that but I keep getting unable to locate package nvidia-current.

but that gives the error mentioned. Sorry for my incompetence I'm literally brand new to gnu/linux. How can I tell it to just get the drivers from the official Nvidia servers or whatever?

I don't remember if it's an option when you install or if you have to explicitly download a nonfree iso. but either way, you're likely to have lot's of little issues like this over time, therefore, I'd reccomend you go with one of the buntus. you get nonfree stuff and third party stuff just by checking a couple boxes as you install. and because of it's much larger userbase and launchpad, it's fairly easy to find a solution to any issues you run into.

I decided to set down what I was doing. Clearly that's not going to work, and I'm getting way too frustrated. Somehow installing gentoo went better (up until I had to manually fuck with grub) than trying an old copy of ubuntu I had. Ignoring the nvidia autism from the last few hours, if I can mostly get gentoo installed, do I have any hope with calculate-linux? The sane defaults and proper installer are really making me want to try that instead. I literally just want something I can use to figure out gnu/linux before going full manual again with gentoo.

What does /etc/xdg have to do with desktop environments?
What do you use if you don't have a desktop environment? Just the tty and framebuffer?
>>
>>61978986
>What does /etc/xdg have to do with desktop environments?
xdg is the X desktop group https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ which is where KDE and GNOME collaborate. (Or is it where GNOME implements shit and then has somewhere to point so they can say "look, a spec! KDE is just to slow to implement it but it is definitely the standard, we put on on the wiki ;;)").
>What do you use if you don't have a desktop environment?
A window manager and lots of terminals and shell scripts.
>>
>>61979034

You still didn't explain what the /etc/xdg folder has to do with "desktop environments".
So, your window manager, panel, terminal emulator, wallpaper setter, notifications daemon and other utilities that you have installed don't make up a desktop environment?

Nah, I'm just joking. You're obviously one of those pretentious retards who think that they aren't using a desktop environment. Who think that a desktop environment is only something that's pre-assembled. Do you also claim that it's not a house if you build it yourself, but only when you buy a pre-built one?
>>
>>61978967
Yes I know that. That's not what I asked
>>
>>61979093
Don't be facetious. They asked what /etc/xdg had to do with DEs. I provided a link the group that develops the spec and even provides a vague definition of what a desktop is.
Try actually reading posts before attacking them because you get triggered and make stupid assumptions.

Distro doesn't matter. You can get to full wizard level on Ubuntu aswell, just learn shell scripting and learn which stuff of the filesystem is where and why. Also do lots of manpage surfing (man something -> see also).

Wayland is still shit with dragndrops compared to X.
X is getting a lot better. no more screen tearing too.

You mean root permission or root drive?
If you use a separate /home I GUESS it's probably gonna build/download resources first in your /home/username/.cache or some cache depending on your aur helper (i use pacaur so it's probably ~/.cache/pacaur)

if you have separate drive/partition for /home with more free space then this might work

Don't recommend yaourt tho. Try building pacaur and cower then use octopi's AUR to install it.

Seems my OS (kubuntu) was installed somewhat incorrectly - at any rate, I'mr crashing on every SECOND boot up.

Ran boot-repair,

I get this

The boot files of [The OS now in use - Ubuntu 16.10] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition)

If your computer reboots directly into Windows, try to change the boot order in your BIOS.
If your BIOS does not allow to change the boot order, change the default boot entry of the Windows bootloader.
For example you can boot into Windows, then type the following command in an admin command prompt:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi

Any pro advice? Not using Windows; ubuntu exclusively

You have EFI and you don't dualboot right?

I think you need to check your efi BIOS and set it to disable secureboot (although i think ubuntu's keys are registered to efi so it should work out of the box, the problem is if your efi keys got rekt before).
Then try to change the boot order from your EFI bios or maybe access your boot menu (F12 usually)

Don't use or install your distro in legacy boot. Ubuntu already support efi.
