I've been using some Sennheiser HD 540 reference from the 80s which belonged to my dad for as long as I can remember, but since they may completely break down any day now I'm looking to do some research.
Are these any good for today's standards?
If so what price range would be acceptable if I wanted new headphones with similar quality? Some examples?
Thanks and excuse my ignorance in the field.

Sennheiser favors oval-shaped, because that's sensible (ears aren't round). I'm not aware they have anything fullsized which isn't.

You do realize the second graph has treble that dips way below the treble of the first graph, right? While managing to be lumpier? The second graph also has a dip in the mid-range that would make it sound much "tinnier" than the first.

I'm look for an external headphone amp and dac like this one

amazon.com/Syba-SD-DAC63057-Stereo-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B009WN7QT4/

I have been using this one for about 5 years now but the left channel gave out today. I like it for the easy way you switch between headphones and speakers with the rca out on the back with one button. I'm basically looking for a dac/amp combo with rca out that you can easily switch between. My current pair of headphones are the HD 558s so it doesn't have to be something super great.

Objective:
>Sennheiser hd600s have little/no sub-bass and an extremely obvious treble roll-off past 8k which are both shown by repeated measurements of frequency response by various sources. They also have a high amount of distortion in the bass region like most dynamic driver headphones, as shown by various sources.

Depends on how you feel about floating headbands and non floating headbands. The focus cups are supposed to provide better comfort but different treble extension than the he-400i. The difference between the two headphones is a different kind of connector for the cup and the frame otherwise. Drivers are identical.

I'd say go with the he-4xx because if you're willing to wait, you'll be getting a killer deal.

Have you tried the m1060 for comparison btw? Seems there are lots of mixed opinions about those in comparison to the he400s/400i apart from slightly better bass extension in the m1060.

I own most of the headphones I've recommended and/or an iteration of them that's similar. Either that, or I've at least heard the headphone on more than one occasion because a friend or family member owns it (in the case of the ath-msr7 one of my best childhood friends owns a pair and swears by them. After trading sets for a week I agree as well).

There's a hifishop in my area that stocked the m1060. They're pretty amazing in the sense that they offer a ton of similarities soundwise to the audeze lcd-2. Switching between them it's very hard to tell them apart. Personally, I didn't hear any ringing or Ortho wall issues with them, but Im not entirely sure it's something that persists with use. Something along the lines of the diaphragm stretching out over time.

Here's the thing. Mechanical break in for conventional dynamic drivers is most certainly a bunch of dribble. BUT, planar magnetic drivers are an entirely different animal. The voice coil is typically glued to a mylar sheet, it is not separate from the vibrating surface. This would mean that over time, the diaphragm stretches and the voice coil loosens up. The ringing experienced on the first few hours could be the result of that stiff diaphragm.

The planar magnetic break in applies to speakers as much as headphones. This is why a pair of brand new magnepans take a few days or even months to sound their absolute best, outside of a person's ears adjusting for sound quality.

But alas, those are discontinued and I can't seem to find them sold anywhere anymore. I'm not savvy enough to really know if another similar pad to the vegans exists which would give the same modification to the sound signature so I didn't want to risk it when, as you say, the he4xx are a steal at the price they're offering right now (168$ I believe).

The coloring is going to destroy classical music _and_ won't make daft punk/etc any better. The difference in bass with HD600 is minimal and literally not perceiveable after getting used to either cans, but the treble is significantly more rolled off on HD650.

Look into the Magni2. Getting the Fulla2, which will get you dac+amp, is a decent alternative that'll ensure you're not being screwed by your source's dac. Just beware you won't be able to make it very loud. YMMV whether that's ok.
A popular setup around here is fulla2 as dac + magni2 as amp.
An alternative that's popular for HD600/650 is DAC-X6. Just beware that one has high output impedance, so it won't drive headphones that are low (think <100 ohm) impedance well.

I'm familiar with them as coworkers use them at work, and we've done some exchanges for testing purposes.
They _are_ good at $50 or so, particularly considering they don't sound too bad for a gamer headset, and they have the convenience of the builtin mic. At more than that, they're a ripoff like all gamershit.
They're actually fine for some casual listening while at work, with the occassional conference call, but I vastly prefer my own setup. At work, that's fulla2 + HD380 Pro, with a shit desktop mic for the occassional conference.
Would I recommend them as your daily drivers for enjoying on your free time? Absolutely not.
For that I'd suggest HD600, HD579, HD558 in that order, according to your budget.

Expensive headphones are the kind of investment you can make with the same thought-process you might use to justify purchasing something like a larger monitor with a higher refresh rate.

Is a 1080p TN panel @ 60hz all you need? Probably. But is it really enjoyable? Ehhh. Once you've gotten used to a 4K IPS panel, or a 1080p IPS @ 144hz, there's really no comparison. It's just night and day. I'd go back and make that purchase again every time, no hesitation.

Headphones, same thing. Once I actually caved and picked up a pair of m40x, I was already like "holy shit, okay there's something to this audiophile thing". So my next upgrade was a pair of senn HD600s. I can honestly say, it's the best investment you can make into your entertainment setup, hands down.

Consider, you have five physical senses. Two of those are what you mainly use to interact with a computer. Eyes? Good monitor, check. But what about ears? It's half the experience you're missing out on. Why not upgrade that too?
>>
>>61972593 >>61972600

You always want to get an external audio processor. Internals fuck with the sound because of the electrical noise. It translates into an audible hiss that causes distortion to all frequencies. It's actually extremely loud and annoying if you use an amp too.
>>
>>61972637
>>61972643
Cheers. Music's quite important to me and I recently found means of getting extra money so I'd be tempted to go for an HD600/650 right now.
I recently changed my whole computer and didn't go cheap on some parts so I know where you're coming from about the investment thing.

I'll need to think this through and also learn a bit more about all of this. I've never had an amp or whatever, don't even know if I need one, always ever used my onboard sound.
>>
>>61972575
A long time ago I bought the Siberia v2 since I thought I was gonna start using them in games, and didn't know about >>61972460 So when I got them and tried them on they sounded shit compared to my Koss Porta Pros, never really used them. Some gaming forums I had read about them on praised the sound in them.
So the conclusion is, gamers can't into audio.

>They'll do for the time being but I'm seriously considering expensive headphones now.
You could try getting the M50x or something similar, for me they felt like a huge improvement and don't cost so much, maybe like $150. There's also the DT 770 for around the same price, don't know which are better, think the DT 770 might need an amp too.

>>
>>61972559
Keep in mind that ultimately, they're more similar than they are different, but HD600 hands off.
That's something there's large concensus of, among headphone reviewers.
>>61972699
Some onboard sound chipsets have an actual amp built in. See your manufacturer's website for the board; it's usually marketed.
As a start, your board will in any event suffice. You can always get a dac+amp thing later on if you feel it necessary.
>>
>>61972699
If you do invest in a pair of HD600/650s (which are honestly a great entry point and even end-game for most people) take note that they are 300 ohms, which means you will need a headphone amp to increase the signal strength coming from your sound source, otherwise they will sound too quiet.

Luckily amps are very cheap, I would recommend either the Fulla 2 dac/amp combo from Schiit audio, or the Magni 2, also from schiit audio if you don't need a dac. (Just think of a dac as a soundcard that processes audio at high fidelity, like a soundblaster Z or asus xonar would do).

Another pro for the magni 2 is that he has different options you can choose from at your time of purchase. For instance, if you need RCA outputs that bypass the amplifier and relay the signal straight to your powered desktop speakers, the "uber" version has those outputs, whereas the basic magni 2 non-uber does not.

There are a lot of amps you can look into that will all drive a pair of HD600s fairly well, but most of them will cost more than the magni 2, which is only 99$ USD and comes highly recommended from most people, including most of /hpg/ as far as I know.

With a pair of m50x, you really don't need to invest into dac/amps that cost that much because you won't hear a difference. You're better off using the money to invest into a better pair of headphones in the 200~300$ USD range.

Something as simple as a Fulla 2 combo dac/amp would be more than sufficient to drive the ath m50x.

http://hauptmikrofon.de/theile/1986-3_Standardization-of-studio-headphones_JAES-1986.pdf Section 2.2 Objections to the Free-Field Equalization
Free-field (frontal) equalization in headphones produces linear distortions referred to as "tone color defects." Therefore, HD600's accuracy relative to frontal speakers is completely irrelevant in terms of its perceived neutrality.

I've seen more than one website use the Harman target or an approximation of it. I fundamentally disagree with the Harman target, however, because it was developed using non loudness compensated listening tests. Its bass boost is very likely the result of well-established listener preference for louder music, as boosting the bass in the listening tests boosted the overall volume.

Sennshills also commonly misinterpret audio studies to fit their narrative (hence the harmonic distortion doesn't mean anything argument used against planars).

It was made in 1997 as well, and its popularity is simply due to age and being the first of its kind/performance back in the late 90s. Much better options exist

Don't trust this poster he has an irrational hate for sennheiser. For example he will refer to HD600 as having build quality issues yet recommend hifiman which has a reputation for bad quality control and pic related.

I've had some really good experiences with ebay. If the item doesn't show up or shows up broken, you get your money back and don't have to pay shipping back. And Audeze supposedly has outstanding customer service on their headphones, even if you aren't the original owner.

Question for DiPolar:

Do you know of anything similar to the audeze leather-free vegan pads that I could replace the stock pads on an m1060 with? Because the vegans are discontinued and completely sold out, even auctions no longer exist for them. They're just gone for good.

And if nothing similar exists, is there anything potentially even better that's just more costly?

k. Well, sennheiser had a bad run at some point which headbands tended to chink out. They've since fixed it.
The newer HD5xx models have crazy resilient headbands... there's some vids demonstrating that with insane abuse and no snapping.
In any event, for HD600 and such old yet good models, the headbands are unlikely to break unless mistreated, and even then, replacement parts are available and cheap.
