>what does deband grain do
Adds grain to where debanding has taken place, smooths out the image a bit better, some people don't like it since it's dynamic and in scenes like this where the walls really bad you'll just see blue spots dancing around in motion which is why some people set it to 0 and just add a shader that adds static grain to the video.
Debanding is probably only needed for Chinese cartoons these days if you're watching HS since subbers do a good enough job debanding during encoding anyway, just add

[horriblesubs]
profile-desc=cond:string.match(p.filename, "HorribleSubs")~=nil
deband=yes

[horriblesubs-revert]
profile-desc=cond:string.match(p.filename, "HorribleSubs")==nil
deband=no

to your mpv.conf and put autoprofiles.lua in your scripts and maybe put a toggle for deband in your input.conf if you haven't already.

It's a hook for yledl to download finnish public broadcast companys videos/streams. Most of it is not my code. You can find the original from github with yledl_hook.lua. All I did was connect it to the webm script with a script message forcing the path to the tmp file.

I was hoping there was some way to shiv the youtubedl hook. But making a script for youtube dl and then opening with mpv seems like a good idea, will try that out.

Plex has just removed to option to opt out of data collection. Why should I trust mpv when the developer is working on literal botnet?
>>
>>61974448
Because mpv is open source
Plus you can monitor your network
>>
>>61974448
Because mpv is still open source despite switching to the more permissive lgpl license.
>>
>>61974530
>>61974531
Open source and telemetry/botnet aren't mutually exclusive. E.g. Chromium (integrates Google services with no way to disable/opt out), and VS Code (ships telemetry by default and is network enabled). Have either of you been vetting the commits to mpv? I'm not familiar with the codebase, but things like telemetry get past all the time in supposed open-source projects. Atom comes to mind, where some kind of telemetry went enabled for well over a year, and the devs claimed "oops, we didn't mean to".
>>
>>61974604
what part of monitor your network didn't you understand?
>>
>>61974639
So you're saying mpv can't be trusted? And you spew "open source" as some kind of buzzword. I'm simply not going to use a program if there's even a chance you have to monitor such activities.

>>

>hype
Not exactly what I'd call it. Nobody is “hyped”, it's just that some guy opened a pull request and I'm telling him that (essentially) his code is bad and how to do it properly; now a few mpv developers are apparently interested in doing it properly. I don't have a use case for this personally.

>>
>>61974448
If you want my opinion/advice: Nothing changed when wm4 got hired by plex - he still works on mpv just as much and just as transparently as before. Most of the mpv team doesn't even acknowledge plex's existence. I mean it's nice that they're giving wm4 money for what he does anyway, but the mpv project isn't exactly tied to plex because of it.

Everybody on the mpv developer team hates botnet/spyware crap just as much as the average /g/ tinfoil hat wearing guy. mpv will never “phone home”; I will guarantee that much. What the plex company decides to do with their shitty kodi fork is literally none of our business. I don't endorse it, nor does anybody else connected to mpv.

2017-08-10 00:28:42 bjin Personally I wasn't very motivated at this, ravu already fits my need (for anime watching purpose). I don't have decent nvidia card for training as well.

So, here's my understanding of this.

>brainlet douchebags were buttblasted that xscrnsaver was a dependency for mpv under the pretense "but lel i dun run a screensaver" (despite xscrnsaver's definition of screensaver including stuff like screen lockers and some power management features).
>mpv devs decided to remove it and replace it with xdg-utils (in particular xdg-screensaver, a part of xdg-utils)
>shit broke for a bunch of people
>mpv devs rewrote it and threatened to outright remove it if it didn't work; shit broke for a bunch of other while fixing it for some of the people it was previously broken for.
>Currently there is no solution if it's broken for you (except doing something stupid like maintaining your own mpv fork).

It seems clear that the current configuration is broken for KDE users and there's been some bug reports opened on this as well as what may be a working patch for xdg-utils for some KDE users on some distros?

To check if this is working for you, generate a log file with mpv and do:
$ cat ./log | grep -i screen

If it's broken you will see something like:
[ 0.017][v][vo/opengl/x11] Detected wm supports FULLSCREEN state.
[ 0.199][v][vo/opengl/x11] Disabling screensaver.
[ 0.219][v][vo/opengl/x11] Updating screensaver failed (4). Make sure the xdg-screensaver script is installed.

Can we get a show of hands showing:

>What distro and window manager are you running?
>Are you running the current mpv git build?

>Is this working for you?

fyi, most content is 23.976fps, but some content is 24.000fps, so if you want to get rid of interpolation (which is a good thing to do if you can), for a complete solution you'll need to create a mode for 23.976*3 in addition to one for 24.000*3. it seems you've created a custom "72" mode, which would usually be expected to be 24.000*3, but you "optimized" it with madvr for 23.976 content, so it measures as 71.93 now. my advise would be to create a 71 mode for 23.976 content, and a 72 mode for 24.000 content.

if you have true 30fps/60fps videos, too, then you can also use madvr to optimize your "60" and "59" modes. again, you might need both, because videos can be 29.970 or 30.000. or 59.940 or 60.000.

then of course, you need some solution to automatically switch to the right refreshrate, not sure how to do that.

once you've all that covered, you should be able to get rid of interpolation and display-resample, which means no more blur and ghosting added to video, and no more audio resampling harming audio quality.

of course interpolation is a great feature, so is audio resampling. but they're both a means to an end, which lower video/audio quality slightly in order to get playback perfectly smooth. if your refresh rate is "perfect", you don't need either of these hacks, playback should already perfectly smooth on its own, without needing any fancy tricks like interpolation etc.

Is madshi using compute shaders for his NGU and Jinc algorithm? I don't know why scale=ewa_lanczossharp with opengl-backend=dxinterop is 2.5x faster than madVR Jinc but as fast with opengl-backend=angle. And I just remembered that angle doesn't support compute shaders yet. So maybe madshi is not using compute shaders for his Jinc implementation.

I'm trying to build mpv on openSuse Tumbleweed.

I installed git and followed the isntructions here:
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv-build#generic-instructions
But when I do
sudo ./install

I get the error:
>The project was not configured: run "waf configure" first!

I think by "waf" this is meant:
https://github.com/waf-project/waf
But I don't understand how you're supposed to use that.

How do I continue to build mpv?

>compiling from source in a binary distro that has mpv in its repositories
How new to GNU are you?
>>
>>61981394
I'm new to Linux in general, but especially to this distribution. Used Ubuntu before, but switched because I couldn't fix the tearing and audio crackling, which make you insane after a while.

I tend not to check YaST because it's so cumbersome to use. You have wait for it to download some minutes and click, like, 6 times and enter your password to install something. Also, aren't those packages usually outdated?

Thank you for telling me that mpv is in the repositories! That saved me a lot of hassle, although I still am interested in knowing how I would continue to build, if I have to learn how to do that for other programs.
>>
>>61981317
It's been like 13 years since I messed with Suse and other distros of that sort. I think that if you do follow those basic configure, make, install instructions then you can end up breaking the OS (because you're dicking around with system files without the package manager's knowledge and this can break things both now and later when you do updates through your package manager). Also, your disro may have special tweaks to some software that may make it act stupid with something you compiled yourself.

I believe the "correct" thing to do would be to actually create a package using git sources and install it through your package manager.

Unfortunately you've run into this paradox where the more user-friendly your distribution it is the more difficult/tedious it becomes to do anything somewhat technical. On distributions like Arch linux and gentoo, installing from git is a cakewalk. On package based non-rolling release distributions like Suse, Ubuntu, Debian, etc.. I wouldn't even know where to start nor would I want to.

>>61981394
>Not knowing why someone would want to compile a project from git as opposed to installing an older "official release" binary.
Clearly not as GNU as you.

>>61981485
>tearing
Turn on compositing if it's not on by default (you can disable all the effects if you want).

>audio crackling
Could be lots of things. I've even seen instances where hdmi audio will fuck up if the video card is being pushed too hard. Were you able to resolve it by simply switching distros?
>>
>>61980447
Maybe he could create something better and faster than Jinc for normal upscaling, not doubling. Hope he will create a NGU variant for crappy/old animes and beat the RAVU smoothtest1 shader and that again bjin will move his ass to destroy madshi's algo, and this infinitely.

Custom resolutions or NGU upscalers are not placebo memes at all.
Maybe the "remove artifacts" area is because banding is really noticeable on deprecated/old/buggy videos only but everything else has huge visual effects, some are bad, some are good, it depends of the content.

The only one issue with custom resolutions is that you have to redo every custom resolutions after drivers update. On win10 with automatic/forced updates, it's just a nightmare. It was easy to disable but now it switches back to defaults after reboot.
>>
>>61981554
>On package based non-rolling release distributions
openSuse Tumbleweed is a rollig release distribution, according to installgentoo.

>Turn on compositing if it's not on by default (you can disable all the effects if you want).
I think it's on by default on Ubuntu.

Yes, works flawlessly on Tumbleweed.

>>
>>61981485
>>61981599

>although I still am interested in knowing how I would continue to build, if I have to learn how to do that for other programs.
Short answer: Don't.
Long answer: Since it is rolling release it's possible they have some simple way to create packages in which case that would be what I would look into. Alternatively look into installing into a directory.

>I tend not to check YaST because it's so cumbersome to use. You have wait for it to download some minutes and click, like, 6 times and enter your password to install something.
That sounds awful but your official repositories should be the first place you should look (some of those are modified specifically to work with your distro).
>Also, aren't those packages usually outdated?
Since Suse Tumbleweed is rolling release that means that as soon as a package has been tested and confirmed to be working it goes into the repos.

In the Linux world there's this old meme that goes something like
>if it isn't broken then don't upgrade it
This is the reason there's so many distros that are full of very old packages (including deprecated shit) and other such non-sense. In other words, this guy: >>61981629

While it's true you shouldn't upgrade for the sake of upgrading, it's also silly to stick to old releases when git versions are often really stable and are implementing new features/improving performance. In many cases one may actually need to look towards a git version in order to obtain a fix for a bug they're experiencing.

Lots of people in these threads build mpv from git because there's some feature being added that they want to play with.

I've been using linux for 15 years. I can't remember a single instance off the top of my head when I've broken something by switching to a git version. I can remember many instances when git versions have fixed things for me however.

>The only one issue with custom resolutions is that you have to redo every custom resolutions after drivers update
Yeah, this is going to be a PITA, especially since you have to play video for at least 10m while madVR measures shit. It's a nice feature though, I used it for 23.976FPS and I went from 1 frame drop every 8 minutes to basically no frame drops ever. It would be very nice if he added an export/import feature though, so you could save your adjusted modes and restore them after reinstalling drivers or the OS.
>>
>>61982082
I think you can save changes by copying settings.bin file. No?
>>
>>61982082
Is playing a test video with madVR for 10 long minutes a mandatory? :-\

I can't test myself because I have an Intel iGPU only and it's pretty buggy.
>>
>>61982099
I was just thinking about that, but I'm not sure if it would work completely properly. I guess you'd have to go through every mode and re-test/apply it by hand after the driver update, that would still be much better than having to re-measure everything. Ideally we'd get a feature which would just re-apply all the measured, known-good, custom modes automatically.

>>61982131
At least 10 minutes uninterrupted/undisturbed playback for each mode/refresh rate, yeah, recommended 30min though. I only did 23.976FPS and just watched a 24min anime episode without touching my PC, everything seemed to work well enough.

smplayer is the most broken piece of shit and using it with mpv is just plain retarded and dumb. It's designed for mplayer and stuck in the 2000's era of mplayer APIs. The amount of bullshit bug report mpv gets from smplayer users who have some sort of extremely retarded vf configuration because of smplayer retardation is just saddening. The smplayer devs have absolutely no fucking clue what they're doing and just slap on more cargo cult shit to work around mplayer bugs without giving a shit about the negative consequences

Many TV panels are IPS and thus have shit black levels.
Not that my IPS monitor is much better in that respect but it is at least hardware calibrated.
>>
>>61986104
Hell I may be wrong about that as well. If you enjoy movies, buy a big PC display that has great color spaces, brightness and all that. (designers use such). And 4K. That's all you need if you are a big movie/anime fan.
>>
>>61986076
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/1574

Prime example. Instead of the built-in mpv feature “--ass-use-margins”, on by default, they hackily use their own combination of old mplayer filters like vf=expand which is slow, prevents DR from working, degrades performance and doesn't work as well and they set hilarious options like --no-keepaspect.

Also, SMPlayer developers are braindead idiots who refuse to listen to reason and have no idea how to develop software. Just ask lachs0r etc.

Nah.
You can't even find proper reviews of TVs, they are all the same crap panels with "smart features" peppered on top. Which of course just stop working after a while and just suck out of the box anyhow. If you want quality, just ... no.
>>
>>61986354
This, literally the only way to get a quality screen is to buy a mastering display and calibrate it.

https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-hdr/cat-hdr1/product-BVMX300%2F2/
This is probably the best you can get
>>
>>61986379
Yeah.. okay.
Meanwhile, you can just buy a designed display for 300-500$ with 4K and a bigass screen size. Ok, not 50", but if you want details, you should not watch the content from 50 feet away anyhow.

>>
>>61986437
>do some fucking research ffs
That's my point, there is not much to research. Try to input TV models into google. "Samsung SKEROP3942398-HDOWPEK-CKPOEWW" and there is this Polish guy, doing an unboxing, where he drops the TV three times and he gets to turn it on once at the end of the video. And that's fucking it.

Meanwhile, monitors have a dozen reviews each.
How do you even research a TV purchase? Btw I spent like a week picking out a TV for her and it stll sucks ass. I checked all reviews that I could find but I realized people know jackshit about TVs. I mean they watch FUCKING CABLE on it, so what the fuck would they even see if it was shit. Annoying/10.

Yes, and they're by the likes of people like tftcentral, hardforum or other people who literally autistically measure every aspect of the display. tftcentral uses a fucking oscilloscope to measure how the backlight is driven..

Good luck finding a TV review that even comes close to that :^)
>>
>>61986544

That was our point, that we cannot just find reviews for TVs. They have so many models for so many markets, and so obscure model numbers.. it's impossible to find reviews.

Dunno, last time my friend told me I have to watch some gay weeb shit, there were super-duper high quality RIPs right after airing. Also I mean this is literally an mpv circlejerk thread where people refine their grandfather's mpv config.
Such sophisticated fellows using shit h264 encoded rips with horrible bitrates. Then what the fuck is the point at ALL? You could watch this on a toaster, on VLC on literally anything.

> inb4 mpv makes 240p 100kbps to 4K 1000000kbps quality
>>
>>61989618
:^)
>>
>>61989618
For any show that's still airing, the source quality will obviously be subpar because there are no BD rips. Good media players can certainly help smoothen out issues in the source though. For example, there's was an episode of MJP that had banding so bad that I ranted about how shit CR was at least a year (pic related). With fancy debanders and shit, you can make this image look much more bearable.
>>
>>61989699
nice repeating digits my sophisticated friend.
btw if it's shite, why watch it? if it's good, why not wait for a good rip?
never understood.

> inb4 yur'e bored kiddo
Sure am. Though I do use mpv, and I do use the placebo profile, but fuck me I can't see any goddamn difference. I used 20GB blu-ray movies, older japanese cartoon, newer japanese cartoon, but nothing.
>>
>>61989750
>btw if it's shite, why watch it?
Because posting on /a/ (or /m/ for other shows) is fun while a show is airing. Honestly, CR rips have come a long way. They used to be much worse in the past. I remember getting flat out wrong frame rates.
>>
>>61989781
yeah but like... if something is good, I could not bear to wait week after week. and if it's just a regular cartoon with no plot, no meaning, no value, then it's just a waste of time really. (well shitposting is also a waste of time, fuck me.)
>>
>>61989076
>>61989252
Would it be possible to have a script where you type in a search term inside mpv (like how you can type in a timecode with seek-to.lua) and then have it show the results in a list like playlistmanager.lua where you can go up and down and select the one you want to play?
>>
>>61989826

Each to his own. Sometimes the anticipation itself is fun in a way. My personal favorite show this season is Princes Principal and every Sunday I look forward to the new episode and the ensuing discussion. That's something I couldn't participate in if I waited until the BDs came out.
