If you want help:
>Assemble parts list

How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

Cable management, depending on the length and size of the splitter
If you're splitting from your motherboard, most fan headers won't support more than 1 amp (12 watts), so don't overload a single header

Hi anons, I'm thinking about getting a R5 1600. Will it be an upgrade from my current i5 4690? If yes, is it significant enough?

The price difference between the 1600 and 1600X is only $15 right now on Newegg, but the X doesn't come with a stock cooler
If you've got a third-party cooler already which is (or can be made) AM4 compatible, I'd recommend the higher model
>>
>>61965632
Thanks. So what kind of performance increase would I be expected to have? In gaming and video encoding?
And should I pay an extra for the 1600X or is the 1600 good enough?

Ryzen or Intel?

AMD or Intel?

General gaming, programming and blender. Hope to be able to do GPUpassthrough with VMs.

No rush, so if its worth waiting on anything, then that's fair.

Also, what are these m.2 drives I keep seeing round?

>>
>>61965674
M.2 is a new form factor for SSD's, uses a new connector
Lets them lie more or less flat along your motherboard instead of needing to be mounted somewhere in your case
Most new motherboards have at least one, high end boards will have two or three

But as mentioned in the OP, M.2 is a FORM FACTOR
You can find standard M.2 drives which use SATA connectivity (typically supplanting one of the board's standard SATA sockets), or NVMe M.2 drives which transmit data over dedicated PCIe lanes
>>
Is an intel hd graphics card enough for watching 1080p videos or streams?

I have an R5 1600 (pic related)

I haven't built before so I'll ask here instead of being a retard.

The stock cooler has stock thermal paste applied, but build guides show people applying thermal paste between the CPU and mobo (where the connections meet)

will the stock cooler with the preapplied paste be good or will I fry my CPU unless I shill out on some paste between the mobo and CPU?

Even though the Flare X is DDR4 2400 vs the Rip at DDR4 3200? Is that difference negligible enough that the lower latency makes up for it? It's only like $30 bucks more though
>>
>>61966153
>but build guides show people applying thermal paste between the CPU and mobo

those are bait videos. you don't put thermal paste anywhere aside from on the cpu heatspreader which makes contact with the cpu cooler.

insert cpu into mobo > put thermal paste on heatspreader (ignore this if thermal paste is pre-applied to the cpu cooler) > insert cpu cooler > screw it down firmly

just oc the 1200.
sure it's better binned on 1300x, but 100 to 200MHz is not worth it.

1500x is not worth it only, $20 more for a 1600.
1400 is questionable, only $50 for a 1600, just cut something out that can be upgraded later, like ssd.

rx560 is still faster than a 1050.
if you have a ryzen just get an amd card and not deal with nvidia crippling drivers.

>>
>>61967147
It's not necessarly bad, but you could get a better performing system if you re-distributed your budget.

Get a 1080Ti by getting a 500GB SSD and a cheaper (but still high quality) case.

Or get a 1700 intead of the 1600, depending on your use.

Also the cooler is a bit overkill.
>>
>>61967206

why?
>>
>>61967186
On the other hand that cooler can last until AM4 dies, so why not. Pop in a 12c/24t Zen3 in 2021, reuse the cooler. Profit
>>
>>61967147
other than the GPU, you essentially have a budget build but you're splurging on a lot of unnecessary stuff.

If you want to save some money, consider dropping the cooler and doing something about the storage. You can get a 240GB m.2 SSD and a 4TB HDD for the same price, or do some other combination to drop the price. Also, you can get similar sounding speakers for less than half that price
>>
>>61967231
im just gonna be producing music, and playing games
>>
>>61967231

then they'd have to get a new PSU, and the 1080ti means a better monitor etc
>>
>>61967258
any cooler you have in mind?
>>
>>61967265
>producing music
I'm not familiar with the hardware requieremnts for this. But It would probably be better to get a 250-500GB SSD and a 3TB HDD to store all the shit you make.

Also the 1700 might be better for music production, but as I said before, I'm not sure about the real hardware demands of rhis spexific task.

Criticism very much welcomed. I'm aiming for a portable build since I'll be going back and forth when at university, so it has to fit in a suitcase.

The games I play - when I do play - are mostly processor intensive games such as Hearts of Iron or ARMA. I'm not really bothered by graphics so aslong as it is presentable. Apart from that, I'll mostly be using it for research, browsing and playing music.

Mostly wondering if anybody has suggestions for a motherboard, but any suggestion is welcome, as I'm very much an amateur.

obviously not as fancy and doesn't have adjustable bass but you can use an EQ for the same effect. I guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell a difference in sound between most of these active speakers from reputable enough brands like logitech.

Also, I picked up this exact model for ~$40 from a B&M store. You don't need this exact model, it's just I can vouch for it. You could probably get something even cheaper and be fine until you can afford a real stereo setup

This may be the wrong thread but I figure it's atleast sort of on topic.

I've built my computer a few months ago and recently the power button was stuck down (fractal define r5 case) and the computer failed to start. Since then it doesn't start anymore. It started once after I cleaned out some dust and made no other significant changes, but it shut off again about 15 minutes later.

The way it fails to boot is very particular: I dont hear any beeps (although I'm not sure it ever did beep), fans turn on, GPU lights turn on, PSU turns on, motherboard LEDs are on, I can hear my HDD work. The SSD that my case LED is hooked up to does not do anything. I get no signal to monitor.

I've had a similiar problem ~2 weeks before, where the computer would start, but it kept randomly rebooting. It went away after I just shut it off for a night and hasn't made a problem since. It's possibly related.

From reading up I found that it's either my PSU, CPU or Motherboard that's fucked. How could I get a proper idea of which part is broken? I dont have any replacement PSU, CPU or Motherboard to test with.

The thing that really throws me off is that it worked normally for like 15 minutes after dusting it off. I suspected a loose cable but I reconnected everything and it still doesn't turn on properly.

It'll beep if you have a mobo speaker. If you don't have one you should get one.
>>
>>61968267
Yeah that board's good. Just to make sure you're not confusing the Mini C with the smaller and ITX only Nano S right? The Mini C is the better case since the Nano S has issues with blocking GPU airflow.
>>
>>61968299
take out your components and just lay them out on a box or something, and just connect the psu to the MOBO and GPU and connect your gpu to the monitor. Don't you have the little speaker that came with your MOBO to POST?

Either way, just complete the circuit with a screwdriver on the mobo for the power button. Do you get anything? If not, it's your PSU/mobo/cpu/GPU. If you do, it's something with your case or cables or hard drives, etc.

You could manually test to PSU to exclude it, but if everything powers up normally there's a decent chance it's okay. As for mobo and CPU, you're really dead in the water if you don't have spares to troubleshoot with. But again, if you don't have a mobo speaker it could just be that you have a faulty RAM stick and it's cycling because of that. Go through some standard troubleshooting, remove the GPU and try onboard video if you have that (if you don't you REALLY need a mobo speaker to make sure the error code isn't for a busted GPU), try each stick of RAM at a time in each slot, etc, etc.

Do you actually need one? Soundcards are unnecessary 90% of the time, unless you have a serious audio setup or audiophile headphones that need a lot of power to drive, onboard audio will work just as well as a soundcard would.

I'm living with a kot now so I need to close my PC case first time since over a decade.

I need a cheap horizontal atx case that'd fit at least 2 3.5" HDDs and a normal sized graphic card. Being able to mount esata backplate would be a huge advantage.

I don't care about looks as long as it'll be cheap.

>>61968855
Shocking as in good or bad? And no, M50s have impendence <100ohms so it's really not necessary. If the onboard audio is noticeably terrible, a cheap Xonar is usually a decent option.
>>
>>61968669
I've dicked around a bit and I've noticed that on the Mobo there's some LEDs lit up that say "CPU LED". Upon investigation for my board (asus z170 pro gaming) (the manual doesnt even mention this LED) supposedly they only light up if there's an issue with that part.

How likely could I fix this by just reseating the CPU and reapplying heat paste? Is it worth trying out?
>>
I have a 970 that has some sort of issue.

On 90% of games it's fine but on the other 10% it will black screen when things get intense. Isn't a temp issue.

Does this have any value ebaying it?

I'm contemplating on taking back my order for a rx 580 and just getting a 1050 TI for less and wait for the market to get unfucked. I've been waiting too long for the damn thing to arrive but after two months they're still waiting for a vendor.

Should I get a 1050 Ti for now? I just want to play some vidya and I don't mind not being able to play on high or maxed settings.
>>
>>61968944
You need more than just to close your case. You'll want to make sure every vent or port is VERY well filtered.
>>
>>61968985
Actually correction, what it does is go from CPU LED to the DRAM LED and then jumps back.

This is weird to me because I did fuck around with the ram sticks and try to put them each in a slot etc

Sorry I'm borderline blogposting here, I'm just hoping to narrow it down as I go

what are you doing?

get z170 motherboard so you can overclock OR change to 6700 without k. at this point you should consider going Ryzen if you don't want to benefit from high clocks of i7.
get a bigger ssd.
get better psu (look at SeaSonic M12II)
drop the fans - your case already has one included and it's enough. extra fans are only if you need better airflow.

this is what i would do: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/37XtGf
saved $200 which you can put into better case, psu or some other shit. 6700k will perform slightly worse than 7700k on pic related (if you don't OC it, which you can't on that mobo). ryzen will only get better as time goes on.

if you really want intel i don't know why you'd get skylake instead of kabylake: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/4Tn4bj

>>61970474
For saving $80, I'd say it's well worth it to go for the dual fan since the performance difference will be indistinguishable. Unless you're going for a specific aesthetic in your build like all black or something, it really doesn't mean a lick of difference if it's white. Worst comes to worst, you can paint it. I also doubt the third fan will make any huge difference in a 1060. If it's running hot with two fans, it'd probably be running nearly as hot with three, and if it's uncomfortably it's probably better to just drop the settings in-game anyway.
>>
>>61970572
It's 30 USD price difference between the two here, and they only have the OC version of the white card

So for 30 dollars less I get the white 2 fan "OC" version, I'm not sure how much an "OC" version is worth more though.
>>
>>61970521

>>
>>61970593
two fans and a slight OC is worth a little extra money
>>
>>61970593
Oh. Well it's not specifically between those two models. The point I was making was that you can save some bucks on the GPU. Just narrow it down to 1060 on pcpartpicker and compare prices within that. I'd say for the most part, you won't really feel a difference between the priciest and cheaper models

I posted this morning about my pc woes, yesterday I installed new ram, a second ssd and a hdd, computer worked fine for most of the day without any problems. When I switched on this morning I got a no signal message on my monitor and my kb mouse failed to light up. I've just stripped the machine of all new parts and it's made no difference. I've tried an old gpu I know works and again no luck. However, if I reset my bios with dip switches on the motherboard it comes to life..briefly, I'm able to enter the bios and everything looks fine, all memory devices detected correctly etc but when I exit it just goes back to the no signal message. If I reboot again it's back to square 1, no signal and kb mouse not listing up. I have also noticed that on my 390 gpu only 1 fan spins up and the other just twitches and the cpu fan twitches a bit before coming to life. Could this just be a psu failure? If it is how is it possible to get into the bios and everything appears normal after a reset? Could it be a bios failure? Then how come the bios appears fine after I reset it? I'm desperate to get this working again, just dropped a big chunk of my saving's on an oculus rift, logitech hotas and the aforementioned upgrades. The psu is an aero cool 750w, not the most expensive but it was by no means cheap? What do guys, I'm gutted here.

This is probably the most appropriate place to ask. I've always wondered how well ports of last-gen Japshit actually run, so I was thinking about building a "last gen" gaming PC that would've been appropriate for the time. With that in mind, would this have been the "standard" PC hardware of the time? By standard I mean "most commonly used, not cutting edge but still stronger than consoles".

Really good. Specifying that the wraith spire that comes with r5 is NOT rgb might be nice. I was bummed to find that out, thinking the ones the 1700 and 1600 came with were the same. I know you already mention the 1700 one is RGB but I don't think explicitly stating you don't get it in r5 would hurt

Why are you even getting a Ryzen chip for gaming only?
Why did you choose low frequency RAM for a Ryzen chip?
Additionally, why would you choose a 1600x over a 1600? Are you not overclocking? If you're not overclocking, why are you getting a watercooler? Even if you wanted to get a 1600 & overclock it Ryzen's stock cooler is actually amazing. You don't need meme cooling. Corsair makes terrible PSU's, get Seasonic or EVGA. Your case looks like ass. You can get a 500gb Western Digital SSD for a hundred bucks less than the one on your list.

What's a good price for a GTX 1060 (3gb)? See one on sale for $220 at the moment with other similar dealios.

1600x ryzen build with 32gigs and some other bells and whistles. Was Waiting(tm) for vega intially but a little pissed of at the pricing and availability at the moment, including for the RX 580. I'm figuring i would get one of the smaller 1060's, or even a 1050ti, as a temp card and throw it in a mini build while sticking with 1080p.

Current card is GTX 760 and feeling the age nowdays.

do gaming but im perfectly content with mid settings as long as things run smooth/no stuttering/good do. no heavy software otherwise atm.
>>

CX is kind of a basic bitch power supply, comes in a non modular, not super high end, but it works and is 80 plus rated, TX is more middle of the road, HX is modular like TX but it's higher end, and AX is top of the line with massive outputs like 1500w if you want and platinum 80 plus rated.

Thanks, just pulled the trigger on the tx as it's the only one they had for next day delivery at that level, my only other options where to wait, go cheaper or remortgage my cats.

First of all
>ryzen
Why do you do this to yourself?

Anyway, that's fine. The 1050ti is fine. Just.. fine. Should be good enough to run most titles on med/high settings (perhaps not the new titles though). I'd probably splurge on the 1060 if I were you.

I'd personally go for 4 sticks of 4gb RAM, because I'm a penishead and I like it that way.

And finally

>>
>>61975678

Don't those just run the risk of being invalidated though. Maybe I'll just get the fucking keygen. No harm in using one aside from the obvious risk of joking a botnet, right?
>>
>>61975766
If it does get invalidated, you can message whoever you bought it from and they should replace it iirc. Anecdotal, but I've used mine for 8 months with no issues. And I don't really know the risks or issues associated with using a keygen but I'm going to assume they are worse.

>>61975023
8GB of ram is fine, if you're just gaming. If you want to upgrade the ram, just get a single 8gb memory stick and buy more lated. Get the R5 1600 instead of the 1500x since you'll get a stock cooler and also 6 cores/12 threads. Faster ram will help since the Ryzen has infinity fabric that will improve performance in gaming with higher ram speeds. As for the OS, just buy a cheap key from someone.
By the way, Ryzen is perfectly fine >>61975182

If you really want an 1800X, go for it, but you can get 99% of the same performance by just overclocking a 1700 to the same level.
If you're spending that much money on the system, get G.Skill Trident Z memory.
Why SSDs only? By not 1 500+ gb SSD and then like a 2 TB HDD?
don't do a normal DVD drive. Go for a blu ray drive if you have to
