/g/ always talk about "companies spying and stealing your data", I don't doubt about that but what exactly do they steal?

Because, I'm not famous, important, a hacker or a cyber-criminal, I'm just a regular guy who just use pc to work and shitpost here. So why I have to protect myself? why you protect yourself against them? What data they want and what they do with datas?

Something bizarre has started happening and I can't figure out why. Google has had some people with the same problem but few getting fixes and those aren't working for me

When I'm zoomed to something so that I can scroll left/right, it automatically starts to scroll to the right in discrete steps. It's kinda annoying

I suppose one is protecting themself from having an internet profile.
Example
When an individual is targeted their wealth is learned. What they do for a living is learned. Their likes dislikes and what their current thoughts are, are all targeted. Every last dollar in your pocket I'll try and be magnitiesed by companies that know your every thought. Marketing tailored to your brain knowing how to suck every dollar out of you. Even those with large amounts of will power can be abused for cash because marketing companies know how to break you. I do not wish for them to have this ability to know that I will break when I see a 8 tb hard drive at a "discount" or other tech goodies that my consumerist soul may desire.

So you don't mind if a person was over your shoulder, watching everything you do and taking notes?
That's what "companies spying and stealing your data" is referring to. They don't literally "steal" anything. But it's obvious that some advertisers are unscrupulous and implant malware or adware or spyware on your PC.

LEDE/Openwrt. It's not complicated to setup there really. Just follow the guide on the Openwrt wiki step by step.

Shrink the partition down to have no free space then image it over to the smaller hdd.
>>

Note that the data to be copied itself would still be way below the target disk's capacity, it's basically just the partition itself that would be too large - I suppose i could downsize it via diskmgmt before attempting to clone or something though

Because there are two common date arrangements which, when the date is on or before the 12th, can cause confusion.

I agree that the month name is bad because they vary by language. If you go with YYYY-MM-DD the confusion disappears and you can use your pure numbers. Filenames also sort better this way.

Oh good Christ, just wait until you see what a difference a proper mic is going to make. Don't write USB mics off so hastily though. Some of them like the Blue product line are just memes but in general they can be quite adequate.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of this really basic mixer that's a darling of a lot of streamers out there. Don't worry it has XLR. It totally escapes me though.

Using the wifi, there are no wired connections
>>
>>61958209
Potentially. You take the campus internet connection and plug it into your router's "internet" port. Then you go into the router setup and make sure it's assigning IP addresses in a different range than your university network. (To figure this out, connect your computer straight to the university network first and see what IP address it assigns you. Say it's 10.0.0.69. When you configure your router, use another reserved LAN range like 192.168.1.whatever.)

The reason I said "potentially" is because there could be an issue. Many schools don't want students doing this. As a result they force students to run a program on their computer which validates their access to the network. Or it requires them to log in. Because the device connecting to the university network will now be a router instead of just your computer, you might not be able to get your router to validate correctly. But hey, it's an experiment.

Well, assuming the login thing isn't an issue:

1. buy this: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-AC750-Range-Extender-EX3700-100NAS/dp/B00R92CL5E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503019356&sr=8-1&keywords=network+extender+netgear

and connect it to a router. I've been usuing this setup for years when needed.

2. get a computer, install any linux and add a bunch of ethernet ports and two wifi cards. use one wifi card to take in the connection and the other to broadcast. The extra ethernet ports would be used for wired devices. you could loosely base it ff this guide, with or without the tor part. https://learn.adafruit.com/onion-pi/overview

connect to your unis internet.
crate a virtual network interface on linux.
type something like this:
sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o [Interface name connected to uni] -j MASQUERADE
iptables -A FORWARD -i [virtual vlan interface name] -j ACCEPT

configure whatever you want your virutal (private) interface to do. maybe throw on a dhcpd, or just static everything, idc
>>
>>61958520
using linux you can just create virtual interfaces. this works for wifi too, assuming your wifi drivers support it you can have multiple virtual interfaces connected to multiple networks

its simple

ifconfig <VIRTUAL_INTERFACE_DEVICE> <IP_ADDRESS> netmask <SUBNET_MASK> up

I have about $90-$100 to spend on a home router.
What are some good ones for the price/brands to avoid?
It's gonna have a couple of computers and quite a few wireless devices connected to it, so I need something that won't shit the bed when there's a lot of wireless devices connected.
And in our neck of the states, average connection is about 60-100Mb/s down, so the bleeding edge fastest thing wouldn't be used to its full potential, I'd be more interested in robustness.
I want to specify because of the last thread that this would be a router for my parents house since they and my brothers are getting frustrated with the current router dying when they all get home and their phones connect to the network. Since I don't live there and they want me to be their tech support, I just want something basic that's pretty much plug and play/minimal set up so if something goes wrong, they have a chance of figuring it out/they can call up the manufacturer. So having all the open features and being linux based doesn't mean shit.

I would just like to interject for one moment. The operating system you are suggesting for me to install, and rather commandingly might I add, will in fact, not directly solve my current problem at hand, and will actually cause me to ask further questions about the difficult process involved in installing it. Gentoo is a very nice operating system itself, but I'd rather you directly assist me in my quest to solve my current predicament.

I understand that many computer users run the Gentoo Linux operating system, and I realize they may enjoy it greatly and are not currently experiencing the current problem that I have whilst using my non-Gentoo operating system. Through a peculiar turn of events, I have noticed an enormous amount of users make the "Install Gentoo" suggestion, but many of its users are not aware that this suggestion, in most cases, is actually not an "easy-fix" to every single computer-related error.

There really are reasons for installing Gentoo, and there are people using it, but it is just for the few users who choose to compile their own source code locally according to their chosen configuration. Gentoo is just another operating system: the problems I am experiencing will not undeviatingly be solved if I make the choice to install it. All these so-called "Install Gentoo" suggestions I am noticing should cease immediately.

my dude, my parents are 50+ years old and barely know how windows works, meanwhile my siblings are still in school and don't give two shits about technical aspects of technology, they just want to stream and download without the shit falling apart.
And since it's an entire family using it, good, robust, wifi is needed. If anything's needed, instead of ringing me up for everything, I want them to be able to just turn it off and back on again or ring up some customer support line since they use the phone more than google.

Dead serious, went over to their place for the 4th of july and once my siblings arrived and their devices connected, my laptop couldn't even stream a youtube video at 720p without needing to buffer for so long.
Not only that, it just randomly dies at times, so they want me to replace it.

No /retro/ thread so I'll ask here.

I just bought an old Geforce AGP card from ebay. The guy claimed that it was tested and working. When I got the card, I plugged it in and got a corrupt looking video bios screen, followed by nothing. Get two sets of 4TB storage media. That could be two 4TB hard drives, two pairs of 2TB hard drives, tape, whatever. You just need two of them.

Connect one set to your computer and run any kind of backup software you want. Could be as simple as copying everything or you could use dedicated software which will check for changes and do its own scheduling. Run it for the first time and let it do its thing.

When it's done, carefully check the backup. Open the most important files and make sure nothing is out of place. Validate the backup. When you're satisfied that everything went correctly, unplug this media set. This is now your "offsite backup." Go take it somewhere safe like a bank box, relative's home, storage unit, etc. Get it away from your home.

Now come back home and repeat that entire process for the second set of media. This set will stay plugged into your computer. Use the backup solution of your choice to create a new backup. When it's done, validate that the backup went correctly. This is now your "onsite backup." It will stay with your computer and be periodically updated to reflect changes that you make to your files.

Finally, go grab a spare USB flash drive. Clear it out and put only the MOST CRITICAL FILES you have on there. I'm not talking about music or animu. Save things like bank records, tax documents, irreplaceable photos, etc. on there. When you're done, validate the files you put on there. Then unplug it from your computer and put it somewhere safe. This is your "oh shit I got some ransomware and it encrypted my onsite backup drives too" backup. It's handier than having to take a trip to go get your offsite backup.

Every so often, like 3-6 months, go retrieve your offsite backup and update it before taking it back to where you keep it. ALWAYS VALIDATE THE BACKUP BEFORE YOU CALL IT GOOD.

>>61959343
You can automate processes to compare checksums of every file as a lazy but passable way of doing it. An even lazier way for personal files is to say "Hey, while I'd love all 3TB to be intact, there are only a handful of things I really couldn't bear to lose." Go check those by hand and then sample a few more randomly.

You can add more storage as your data grows but I built in an extra ~33% with the way I spelled it out, using 4TB per backup instead of 3.

A mid-range card, which will be suitable for your own personal enjoyment of games and such, will suffice. As the other Anon said, focus on a strong CPU and spend the rest on RAM. A good NVME drive for "working storage" to hold your active projects would be nice too. Obviously you wouldn't keep archives on it.

I have a huge as fuck (220 MB) rtf file that is the export of a 20 year old MDE.
I need to transform it into a usable format to upload it into a newer database, the problem lies in that i cant open it in word or any other thing that recognizes the format without it crashing.
I can use other file readers like JOE or Kate and it will open flawlessly although a little sluggy.

Is there anyway to parse it to CSV through a CLI or something that wont jew me out?
>>
>>61959432
The proper way to do it is to check hashes *and then live off of it.* Actually use the backup as a working drive for as long as it takes to be satisfied in the integrity of the backup. This allows you to not only have confidence in the integrity of the file operations but also in the hardware itself. You'll have an extra chance to catch bad sectors, hear clicks from the drive, etc. Treat the drive the way you'd be using it if you actually needed to recover using that backup. It's the gold standard for validating one.

Yes, I think it's overkill.

I leave it to you to decide the balance between not wanting to redownload in the face of potential disaster and the cost/effort of backing all that shit up. Maybe you'd be satisfied, for example, keeping A/V files on a smaller drive and just putting that away on-site or off-site one time. Update it maybe once a year with any new shit you downloaded but don't fuss over making a second backup of it or anything. Treat the more valuable stuff with a more rigorous procedures. I think that's a fair practice for personal stuff.

Bump.

Apparently I need x265 on my system. Does this just mean compiling ffmpeg with x265 flag? I'm so confused

Ffmpeg says:
>In order to obtain a copy of ffmpeg with libx265 support, you need to build it yourself, adding the --enable-libx265 configuration flag, with x265 being installed on your system.

However, it then says:
>You can also download a static build, all of which bundle libx265.

So, is this saying the static build already has the -enable-libx265 flag, or is it saying that I still also need x265 installed on my system?

How the hell do I install x265 on my system? The official website just mentions x265 HEVC Upgrade, which costs $20 bucks. Surely this is free?

with bitcoin? never. with a different cryptocoin? depends.

bitcoin as an obtainable commodity is pretty much dead. the rises of bitcoin are entirely due to investors who will never see a dime on their returns. the time to get into bitcoin is long past, buying into it now is basically throwing your money away.

the thing about all cryptocoins is it can be worth a billion fucking dollars but if no ones buying into it its worth nothing. once the investors dry up, no average person aside from idiots will be putting money into it and those with thousands of dollars of coins will never be able to cash them out

So I recently started dual booting Mint on my laptop and I finally have I3 set up the way that I like it. For learning purposes and funsies I'd like to write a bash script that can identify certain keywords on threads in /wg/ and download all the images in the thread to my wallpaper folder. Obviously they won't be sorted, but whatever. I have experience with algorithms and data structures but next to none writing bash scripts. Does anyone have any advice for how to go about this? Not looking to be spoonfed, but some resources would be a huge help.

What's "s.4cdn.org" and its scripts? They remain blocked with uMatrix yet 4chanx seems to work just fine

For that matter what's "a.4cdn.org" and "i.4cdn.org"?

I need to use a Hashmap for a textbased Java minesweeper board.

My question however is, do I need to fill the Hashmap with 400 values? (B4,B5,H19 etc.)

If I hit "Save" on this screen my file won't save, but will instead open the subfolder of the same name in the currently open folder. I hate this, how may I disable it?

Sounds like 4chans content delivery network. It's basically a distributed cache for static content like images (i.4cdn.org) or scripts (s.4cdn.org).

it's a vanity item, seller of japanese console accessory, but I cannot find it anywhere else and not at that price
however shipping from the seller is almost 90 euros and twice as much as item asking price
they dont offer standard shipping on purpose, only express courier
might as well buy more modern product at that price

shipping to US is half that, china a quarter and hong kong expenses are almost nothing
problem with these forwarding sites I found is the weight expense

Depends on what you want to use it for. If you're in a country with monitored/filtered internet that puts you in jail if you try to visit certain sites, TOR is pretty useful.

Either Windows 10 or Ubuntu LTS with XFCE/MATE (/Cinnamon if it's not an ancient laptop) with menus looking like whatever OS she already knows how to use. Put the shortcuts on the desktop and make them big, even rename them to things like "Internet Explorer" if they're really attached to XP.

>>

Just putting this out there, the reason for the change is W10 somehow (some fucking how) decided to fail an update and now refuses to boot or give any options to fix itself.

Something about cl.dll failing to load and apparently it's a relatively common issue with updates.

Not too impressed honestly.

Just picked up a USB-PS/2 adapter someone dumped with a broken mouse. Tried it on my mouse (G400s if that's important) and the most I can get is the mouse clearly having a physical connection but not being recognised, since the optical sensor is lighting up (although not actually functioning as a sensor, i.e. not changing the light level when something passes over it).
PC doesn't register it's there in hardware manager either.

Is this a compatibility issue with the mouse model, or just a 'restart and it werks' thing? It's not incredibly important, I'd just like having a free USB port.
>>
how can I revive an external HD that was unplugged badly?
>>
>>61964432
Would love thread ripper, but I could buy 3 Ryzen rigs for that sort of money!
>>
>>61964329
Ouch, I've had a similar thing happen and it's not fun. I suppose for a backup you could install the Windows bootloader, create a VHD from the W10 installer command line, and install to that rather than straight to the hard disk, optionally with another partition for user data. Once it's all set up well, copy the VHD to an external drive and if it all goes wrong again you can just replace the VHD file on the computer for instant fresh install.

But I did that when the Windows 7 beta came out and I had too much free time. It also doesn't stop Windows from fucking up again.

Finally buy a backup drive on sale.

Start moving files from my other drives and one of them decides now is the time to shit itself..

I've had the click of death on another drive before, but this one sounds different. Disconnect/reconnect power to listen to it, whirr, whirr, whirr. None of the loud clicking that the other one did when it died.

Too much porn to send it off to data recovery experts. Tried disconnecting other drives, moving cables. Google says to try another computer or get an external dock.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

>>61964657
Not really worth the money. They might be speedy, but it's not speed anyone really needs. You won't notice a difference between it and a regular SSD.

I decided to go for it on my fileserver build (since it was crammed into a u-nas nsc-400) though due to the low profile. And since I only needed it as a boot disk I went with whatever m.2 had the least amount of space on it.

I accidentally deleted some pictures on my phone.
I've downloaded at least 3 apps that retrieved some back, anything else I can do or are they gone forever ?
>>
>>61966628
Everytime you download and install a new app you're overwritting data on it, so, the more you install the less photos you're likely to recover.
So, what apps did you tried and why didn't they work?
Remember, you need to be rooted to use recovery apps.

You can boot off them? That's pretty good.

I guess anything that really thrashes the hard drives hard will benefit from one, but not worth the expense over an SSD?

Fair enough. I've just been made a big offer, about 30% pay rise, so while not wanting to spend stupid money, I'd quite like to get a really good rig that lasts many years.
>>
>>61967163
The usb stick is damaged then, if you already tried to use it on another device and it isn't recognized, trash it.
If it works on other systems, your windows 7 install is corrupted.
