Just pulled the trigger on an x200t for light browsing and on-the-go shitposting. Final price hovered a little over $75 and the laptop seems in pretty decent shape (a scuff here and there, but nothing a little elbow grease won't vanquish).
Delivery should be making its way up north fairly soon.
Any anons use the x200t? Would love to hear stories/view comfy pics to get hype.

I got lucky and snagged a Thinkpad T-530 with a i7-3840qm processor for 270 dollaroos. I wanted to replace the keyboard with a classic one, but I heard news that some of the functions on the keyboard do not play well with the T-530. Anybody have a similar problem?

I got a m4500 and it ran well. Most of these older laptops run well with linux, it is the newer ones with newer drivers that are a problem.

So I have been comparing thinkpad's old third gen and 2nd gen processors with current processors... Why is the difference so small after 5 yrs? Only thing we seemed to have improved on is integrated graphics and gimping performance in favor of battery life. Are we going backwards?

In an objective manner, what is actually the big advantage that modern mobile cpus have over these old one?

>>
>>61955083
Nothing wrong with them, as long as we're still talking Thinkpad keyboards. The feel is on par with or better than the --20 keyboard. The layout is balls and the B key is misaligned which triggers my autism to no end, but otherwise they're still the best laptop keyboards on the market.

>>
>>61955190
Like you said, Intel has mainly made improvements to power efficiency and iGPU with only marginal performance gains. Those ULV Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs use significantly less power than the full-voltage Ivy Bridge you're comparing them to. In theory, you'd get far better battery life and lower temperatures out of a laptop with one of the newer CPUs, but batteries and coolers have been gimped in the pursuit of muh thin and light, so the improvement is less noticeable than you'd think.

And while the iGPU itself has improved considerably, a lot of newer laptops only have one RAM slot or totally soldered RAM, so you can't get dual channel speeds. The X240 performs significantly worse than the X230 because of this, its iGPU isn't better enough compared with the X230's to make up for the halved VRAM bandwidth.

this is what happens when you make a polar array of circles on the right side of a host circle, 359 times in a 360 degree radius

after this i think im gonna design a neat desk, and then after that, a wooden horizontal computer case, beacuse the one LGR reviewed was overpriced garbage

You can use cpufreq-utils throttle the CPU down to <1600MHz and similar battery life to windows without losing much performance.
# cpufreq-set -u 1200MHz

You used to be able to select clock speed using indicator-cpufreq by default, but now you have to pass a kernel option to enable the legacy power states. I'm not sure if that sets the max clock, or just sets a fixed clock.

There's really no use in using the "powersave" mode over "balanced" in Ubuntu. powersave turns off turbo, but you need to actually throttle the max CPU frequency below stock to get any proper gains.

TDPs are the same as the CPU I have in my T420. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

You could even slap in an ivy bridge if you used a modified bios or coreboot. You'd get a better integrated GPU that way.

How much soldering does that require? I looked up coreboot earlier but I'm still a bit on the fence if I want to try it. I've killed enough Xbox 360's in my time
>>
>>61969129
I've never done it, but you could get an rpi and a clip for the bios chip to flash coreboot. If you make a backup of the original bios, it should be easy to roll back if you screw anything up.

CPU is in a PGA socket, so you shouldn't have much trouble with that. I don't think you'd need a soldering iron at all to do it.

My replacement Nip keyboard came today so I feel ready to show off my project!

Here's what's left of my X201! I bought a X200 on ebay with a decent processor and swapped the innards around, here are the specs:

- 8GB's of RAM
- 250GB SSD
- Core2 P8700
- Librebooted
- Japanese keyboard
- Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Card
- HV121WX4-120 Matte Display

All running a completely FOSS operating system! My daily driver is complete!

Well, that kinda worries me since I'm sensitive to light and have been prone to migraines since I was a kid.
I've read a few places that the x200 allows you to choose between a 50Hz and a 60Hz refresh rate (50Hz being reserved for power-saving purposes).
Maybe forcing the setting to 60Hz will remedy the issue?
Sorta spitballing here, as there are probably a thousand other reasons why one would develop agonizing headaches from using the x200 for extended periods of time, but there are people on the Lenovo forums who lament the same problem.
Thanks for the heads up.

>>
>>61970528
Get a cheap tp like x220 and build a desktop with the rest. Buying new TPs for full price isn't worth it. The best deal on Lenovo's corporate store is for t570 for 670$. This is still bearable. You'd probably want to make sure that the software you need works with integrated graphics, tho
>>
>>61970484
I don't have experience replacing parts in them, but I used one provided by my work for about a year and it was a solid machine. I would guess that repair/replacement would be significantly more difficult than on a standard thinkpad due to the form factor.

Paid $42 for a Thinkpad T420s which had been stripped bare, no RAM, HDD, ODD, Screen, RAM cover was missing & so was the HDD bay cover & caddy, it was junk, sunk about $70 into it and soldered a blown fuse and it works GREAT I basically got a brand new laptop with a Core i5 for $115

I fell for the meme and it worked out better than expected.

All my friends liked it, they liked that it was black, that the keyboard wasn't shit, they saw the stupid gimmicky ThinkLight and said "I wish my laptop had that" So I bought another and I'm fixing it up, I might just start doing this to earn sidecash, they're so easy to work on.
>>
Welp, I've officially fallen for the Thinkpad meme. Just bought an i7 X201 tablet with an SSD off of ebay
>>
>>61970722

>>
>>61970758
I bought all this on ebay, and they usually go for around $200 more once you factor in the shipping, sure I could have waited for a better deal but I would have rather fixed the machine anyway, I like fixing computers
>>
>>61970758
It wasn't that much work either, I'd take apart a machine to clean it anyway so I just swapped out the screen while I was in there, you usually switch the whole upper assembly on a thinkpad, rather than the LCD which struck me as strange but whatever, the screen with the bezel and backplate was cheaper than the screen by itself, so I went with that. RAM slots in, ODD slots in, HDD slots in, basically lego for nerds, no real work involved. Turns out the screen had been removed because the backlight fuse was bad on the mobo, took maybe an hour to find and fix. It's a common problem on the T4XX series, they used a 3amp fuse on a really demanding circuit where it doesn't need to be, the backlight can handle mild fluctuations, as a result those fuses blow out for like no reason, which is why I just soldered the contacts together, easy so long as you aren't a brainlet. All in all it was a good way to spend a saturday morning

>a mechanical docking port on t570 that the t470 didn't have.

I'm fairly sure they both have it, and even the T470s has one?

Just look at the Lonovo site to compare them.
Specifically try out the custom configurations to see all the options.

14" is obviously more portable.
But you pay for it in both added costs (they are harder to make) and performance (they are harder to cool, so will throttle sooner)

One thing I don't like about the 14" T line is how they split it into T470, T470s and T470p.
Where they are trying to push you towards either more expensive "s" or "p" versions by not offering the QHD screen on the plain T470.
Making the plain T470 a sort of "budget" model but it's the only one with dual (internal + external) batteries like the T570.
The T470s has no external battery and the T470p has no internal battery and also has far worse battery life due to a far more power hungry quad core CPU.
So if want want both great battery life and a QHD screen you have to go for 15".

If you're happy with 15" I would go for the T570.....well, I would go for a P51 but that's just me having too much money.
>>
>>61971385

>It's still a QWERTY keyboard right? How is the layout different?

Where they put insert, delete, arrow keys, page-up/-down etc. etc.

Little things can make a big difference.
Personally I got triggered by the placement of the Fn key in the bottom left where I expect a Ctrl.
Shit like that can drive you nuts when you switch between a stand alone keyboard and a laptop keyboard.
And on most brands it's far worse than on Thinkpads.
But if you only use the laptop keyboard I think any layout will work for you in time.

Thanks for the detailed reply.
Here is the info listed under the specs page of both laptops on the lenovo site:
T470 Ports :
3 x USB 3.0
1 x Thunderbolt™ 3 port (USB Type-C)
3.5 mm Combo Audio Jack
1 x HDMI™
1 x RJ45 Gigabit LAN
1x CS13 Docking
1 x Media Card Reader (SD 3.0, UHS-I)
1 x Smart Card Reader (Optional)
1x Micro SIM
t570 Ports:
3 x USB 3.0
1 x USB Type-C / Thunderbolt™ 3 port
3.5 mm Combo Audio Jack
1 x HDMI™
1 x RJ45 Gigabit LAN
1x Mechanical Docking

So the 470 doesn't mention a mechanical docking port. Also is there really a big difference in regards to portability between 14 and 15 inches? I think the 15 inch would probably be better.

You can see the docking ports in the pictures.
I think Lenovo just forgot to mention it.

I know for a fact that the T460 and T460p both have mechanical docking ports, but the T460s does not.
I was surprised to see it even on the T470s picture, and it's clearly the correct picture because it has no rear battery.

>is there really a big difference in regards to portability between 14 and 15 inches?

Not really, but some backpacks (like mine) aren't big enough for a 15" laptop.
15" is basically the standard and will fit >90% of bags.

I used to carry a whole stack of (paper) books and writing material to university, everybody did.
People who claim a modern 15" laptop is too big or heavy are just pussies to be honest.

The reason I use a backpack that can only fit a 14" laptop is becasue it has a very nice open back for loads of ventilation so I don't get a sweaty back after cycling to the office.

How does one go about getting a non-fire hazard replacement battery for a T520 these days then? I assume getting your hands on an original battery that Lenovo shipped with the laptop in 2012 is impossible at this point.
>>
>>61974289
Dunno i don't care about that, i have a fake 9-cell battery on my T420 and it just works.

I can't get original batteries even if i wanted so it's either fake battery or no battery at all.

ULV CPUs dominates the laptop market.
I think Intel is doing this to push desktop sales.
Plus the heatsinks of these machines are considerably thinner.
When I had a Zbook G3 Studio, the fucking fans went 100% when I started playing league.
Sounded like shit, even tho the M1000m GPU and Xeon CPU would smoke my 2.whatever i5 I had in my T430s....

Help. I disassembled my t420 and now i can't make it turn on. Follows what i did before fucking it up:
>took off the case (battery, ram cover, bottom case, keyboard, front case) and assembled it again (i was going to clean everything but before i could touch other things shit happened at work and had to leave it alone)
>came back from work
>tried to turn it on but it did not boot
>beeped 1,3,3,1 and died out
>checked the manual online and it said the number of beeps indicated a memory problem
>disassembled it again, changed the RAM card to the other slot, assembled everything
>tried to turn it on
>no beeps
>thinkpad logo appears in the screen then some green horizontal lines and everything dies after 2 seconds
I am not sure what it is wrong now. I am afraid it might be some energy problem, i disassembled everything and assembled it again over my bed on a blanket that easily build static and i was not grounded. Does it have any hope? If i really did irreversible kill my thinkpad, what can i save from it carcass?

Battery life, and better gaming/rendering graphics.
But if the T420 breaks, not much lost, can be fixed cheap.

>>61968067
Oh please
ThinkPads died when they went to 16:10.
It's just a thinner, lighter ThinkPad
And that thinkpad is a thinner, lighter, less build quality T60.

>>61968137
They are just an elitist about TPs
Disreguard, if you want a 'real thinkpad' buy an IBM T4x, X3x, G4x, T3x, A3x, T2x, X2x, A2x and anything before that minus the i series and 300.

>>61968544
410s uses 1.8" drives, so hella no
T420 and later use 2.5" drives but must be 7mm or thinner, not 9.5mm like most HDDs during the T6x era.
I believe you can get away with buying a ultrabay HDD adapter tho, they should fit 9.5mm drives.

>>61969400
yeah, idk why they made that line break on the lid, it fucks them up for some reason.

Then a T470 is not for you, anon.

T440p and T440s can upgrade from 720p to 1080p without a cord swap
base T440 does not work, as it is a motherboard issue that wont let it work.
The base T450 and later are able to work.

On my video I used a chimei IPS panel, it worked well, not as nice as my B140HAN01.3 on the T430s (i have the FHD chip mod installed)

I did a video about it too. It just depends what panel you are going to use. off the top of my head, I don't know what other panels are compatible.

Am I dumb for being surprised the Thinkpad is lighter? I figured the Toshiba would be flimsy crap compared to a T420.
My T520 weighs a ton in comparison, but it has a 9 cell battery.
>>
why does everyone recommend the t400s over the w500s?
>>
>>61976708
because the W500 is an absolute beast in terms of size and weight even by ThinkPad standards and battery life is absolute dog shit. I'd recommend the T500 over the T400 though because it can use the suprior W500 screen

so if i get a 45w tdp processor (i7 2720qm) in a 35w tdp cooling system, how housefire will i end up? because i'm certainly content with a 2620m but the two are similar prices so i figure i may as well go for the stronger cpu if the heating issues are negligible

There's another reason not to use 15". Modern 15" Thinkpads have numpads and that's the most annoying thing you can have on a laptop. Using it on your lap becomes extremely uncomfortable that way.

>>61977313
How does it make it uncomfortable? I think having a numpad would be really nice, especially for programming classes and engineering stuff.

it's terrible. if the keyboard is offset a laptop is only good for desk use. it'r gonna give you chronic RSI if you use it on your lap for long periods of time

>>61977394
This is good because you can keep the keyboard centered on your
>>
>>61977501
lap
>>
>>61977501
How would it give you RSI any more than just using a regular desktop keyboard would? I'm not trying to be argumentative I'm really just trying to understand. You would be using it on your lap or a desk anyway most of the time.
>>
>>61977394
Hey what's that in your picture? Is that a numpad in an optical drive? That would probably solve the solution to the problem that >>61977501
and I were discussing. I'm >>61977537
by the way.
>>
>>61977537
Because a desktop keyboard is centered in front of you so your wrists don't bend to either side when typing. If you use a laptop with a numpad on your lap you can't center the keyboard because the laptop would drop between your legs.
>>
>>61977586
I should be more specific, the home row is centered in front of you. The numpad sticks out to the right.

btw that takes a lot of space away which is why I think that on desktop keyboards the numpad should be on the left.
