One thing to note about the HE400i is they have a very open design that gives a nice soundstage but also leaks much more sound than the HD600. Best entry level(~$400) closed back headphones? They can be big because I'd just use them on the public bus and I carry a messenger bag so they'll fit in with my laptop even if its something the size of a hd600.
List of potential candidates:
Meze Neo 99
ATH MSR7
MDR-1A
Sennheiser HD1
Oppo PM-3
Denon AH-MM400
NAD VISO HP50

Phone, rarely Laptop. Mostly for music. Considering buying a dedicated audio player except I have no idea which one.

>Type of headphone
Preferably full. IEMs only if <30€, I tend to lose or misplace them for some reason.

>Open or closed
Preferably closed, I always fuck up the mesh with velcro closures on open ones.

>Comfort level
Should be comfortable during longer flights or train rides. Should not be too large and portable. The Sennheiser px 200 were great.

>Sound signature
No idea. I listen to minimal techno/deep house or rock/punk 90% of the time.

>Past headphones
Sennheiser px 200 II, various AKG and cheap in-ears.

I always just went to the store and bought some. Bought the PX 200 at the airport, and they have lasted longer than anything previously. Took years until I had to fix the cable because it broke.

Sounds like a radio. Weird big bump around 2.5KHz with very rolled off bass. It's definitely a very unique sounding headphone though. If you're a gamer it definitely gives incredible detail to everything around you (eg wind blowing through trees in witcher 3 or going inside a cave and hearing the water droplets). Music sounds very fresh and light to the ear without ever being too harsh.

To me they're a very specific set of tools to enjoy certain things. As a general headphone I think it's subpar. I can see it being one of the best headphones for people that don't care about bass at all

>I gushed in my HE400S review, in some ways I preferred it over the HD 600. Comparing the HE4XX to the HD 600 again today I've got to say I still think it's better in some ways. The HD 600 is smoother and more liquid sounding, but it's got that veil, and the long hump in the bass/lower-mids response does give it a thick coloration compared to the HE4XX. Treble is a bit more strident in the HE4XX, and the presence area is a little more withdrawn, but bass extension and midrange neutrality are better than the HD 600. Bottom line: both are very good cans. But that price difference! People should be yelling, "Take my money!"

If your phone saves orientation information in the EXIF of the photo 4chan deletes all EXIF information before posting, so it reverts to the original rotation orientation the file was captured in.

To get around this just open it up in a photo editor and re-save it. The saved copy will have the rotation hard saved to the photo, not just in EXIF.

THD measurements are not a reliable indicator of audibility:
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_I.pdf
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_II.pdf
> In our next paper we will show that .01% THD of one type of nonlinear system can be perceived as unacceptable while 10% THD in another example is perceived as inaudible. Even one of these simple examples is sufficient to invalidate THD as a viable metric for discussion of the perception of distortion. Furthermore, 1% THD is not at all the same as 1% IM, but we will show that neither correlates with subjective perception.
>These results supported the skepticism that THD and IMD metrics were poor predictor of subjective perception of sound quality ratings.
Furthermore:
http://asa.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1121/1.4984044
>Research has suggested that non-linear properties of headphone responses have little effect
Furthermore:
https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/e38e/b5526af06589596390cd585e6aa38c19344c.pdf
From this presentation given at the AES 129th convention:

Yes, it's a DAC+AMP.
Its got good specs for the price. It's flaw is too high output impedance. That's irrelevant with HD600, as they're 300ohm, but if you ever want to drive low-impedance headphones (<100ohm), you should stretch your budget and get the modi+magni stack instead.

So if I can't afford to stretch my budget for the modi-magni stack, the monoprice is more ideal?
I'm relatively new to this but would having no dedicated sound card hinder my listening experience or is it negligible? Assuming I'm using an amp of course.
>>
>>61952280
The monoprice desktop amp or the DAC X6 are both essentially USB sound cards to help you think of it properly.

They ARE sound cards, AND headphone amps.

So you DO have a dedicated sound card, just USB based, not internal like you're used to.
>>
>>61952300
Ahh okay, thanks!
I'll go with the monoprice then.
>>
>>61952280
Yes, unless you want to spend somewhere around the $200 range, the Monoprice one is pretty much the go-to as long as the 10 ohm output impedance isn't going to be an issue. Not going to be a problem at all with the HD600

If you want to just use your computer's lineout, then $99 buys you a magni2, which is an excellent amp.
Else, if your onboard dac sucks, you might want to buy a DAC usb stick later. There's good ones for <$30. I don't have a link handy, but if you ask around here you'd get recommendations.

I'd actually suggest going this way (getting the magni2).

Thanks awfully.

I currently have a Denon RCD-M40DAB paired with Monitor Audio Bronze 1's which I use for music as well as with the TV. As these only go down to 55Hz, the low end is somewhat lacking. My hi-fi has a subwoofer output so I would like to know how much I'd have to reasonably spend to realise a worthwhile improvement.

The MA Bronze W10 (which seems like the logical choice) would require some significant sacrifices elsewhere to afford at the current time, as would the Dali E9F recommended by my local hi-fi shop.

>>
>>61952280
A typical recommendation around here is to grab a Fulla 2 ($99), which is an excellent dac + a decent amp (particularly considering it's usb powered).
This will drive HD600 sufficiently, unless you want to go real loud. If so, the upgrade path is to add a magni 2 to the dac-out of the fulla2.
A few anons in this board do use this fulla2+magni2 stack with HD600 or HD650. Very popular setup.
>>
>>61952605
The Fulla2 doesn't suffice for many classical recordings or opera.

Not that it matters for everyone, but it's pretty annoying for those of us who do. The HD600/650 need a decent amp to really give classical music justice.
>>
Are the HD650s better than the HD600s? They look similar and I don't know how the numbering works.
>>
>>61952548
Have some at work. These are mostly for travel and commuting.

Sorry I should have specified this. I liked the PX 200 because they didn't have the flimsy mesh like the open ones, but still had a smaller profile.

if the receiver has line outs, there are plenty of options. If I were you, take a look into emotiva, svs, hsu research for good subwoofers new. Svs and hsu in particular are known for offering the best bang for buck as far as subwoofers. I'd recommend going with a sealed sub as well, ported subs create a significant delay as a sacrifice for extension, making them harder to pair properly with speakers.

If you're willing to go used. Look into Carver Sunfire subs on eBay or audiogon. That design is incredible for both the size, extension, and quality it offers and examples can be found for $200-300 typically in good condition.
>>
>>61952646
Idol trash here. I'm familiar with the PX-100 (own) and PX-200 (used). On-ears are nice for outside use, but full sized cans are where it's at for quality+comfort, especially the open sort.
There's also IEMs... they will give you quality but no semblance of comfort.

>>
>>61952661
Thank you. Unfortunately it doesn't have a line out.

>extension
Might I ask what that means? All Google came up with was extension cables.

I'm putting it in a fairly small room so volume shouldn't be an issue and I care more about precision (rather than the monotonal boom I've experienced with PC subwoofers):
>>61952367
>>
>>61952730
Yeah, the CB-1 are good for the price, but that doesn't extend to OB-1.
SHP9500s are excellent for the price, so you did well.
>>
>>61952734
If it has a sub out that's what I meant by line outs (output for a sub). As far as extension, I'm referring to how low the subwoofer.
>>
>>61952650
sure, but my argument is if you know you're buying decently high impedance headphones you might as well go with something like the DAC X6 or the Monoprice Desktop amp.

The 10Ohm output impedance isn't an issue if you know you'll be using high impedance cans. The Magni 2 is a great amp, but the Monoprice desktop amp is 90% of the quality for half the cost of the Schitt stack. Even less than half if it's still on sale like it has been for the past week.

Z is basically cumming during his review. DMS3 calls them end-game along with the NFB-11 dac/amp or a schiit stack.

lol, FiiO even specifically says they're for 16-150ohm headphones, the HD650 are 300ohms.

They simply can't deliver the power necessary to give the HD650 punchy accurate sound.

Yes the E10K will get them to make noise, but it wont provide the power to do them justice. A better amp would give greater separation on the sound, a more accurate punchy bass, and probably overall more pleasant sounding.

I own HD650, and I can get loud enough volume from my motherboard's on-board sound so that the volume is fine, but that doesn't fucking mean it's anywhere near as good as a dedicated amp like the Schiit stack I have.

end-game dac/amp is either the modi/magni schiit stack or the NFB-11 from audio-gd.

Personally, if you can pay the extra shipping and don't mind the more complicated process of ordering them from china through personal emails to the company instead of an online store, and the 28 days they spend hand-building your unit, testing it rigorously, and burning it in for you before they ship it, go with NFB-11 and don't ever look at another dac/amp ever again for the rest of your life.

That's a pretty autistic claim. Friend of mine who has them hates PUBG rain matches because the rain is all bass and can't hear footsteps for shit because of it.

OB-1's shit stock. With some quick easy mods, they measured close to HD800 on flatplate.

for me bottom since the highs are smoother, but otherwise top for the bass and upper mids.

There is a lot of uncertainty in that pic

There are so many mid-fi headphones. How do you ever stop looking into them?
I like my headphones but I'm still going to buy an HD600 and ATH-MSR7. Then after I do I'm sure I'll still spend all day here, or on amazon window shopping, or looking at FR graphs forever uncertain of my decisions.
>maybe these headphones will make me happy
>oh no! it's definitely these
>$550 later
>silly me, it's THOSE headphones that will finally fill the void
>hmm but what about those
this is my life and it is ending one day at a time.

I am thinking about the m1060 or the he400i. Is m1060 is hyped and full of shit? Some compare it to lcd2
>>
>>61956042
I doubt they are that good, but they're noice for the price
>>
>>61956042
Just needs some new pads and a mod or two and it's very good. Some guy has a vendetta against monoprice in this thread but don't listen to him.
Also monoprice has easy returns and they have a long warranty on the m1060.
You could give it a shot and just send it back if you do not like it. That's my plan when I get my student loan disbursement.
>>
>>61956042
HE-400i doesn't have the ringing issue that the M1060 does. If you're willing to chance Hifiman build quality (monoprice's isn't much better), the HE-4XX would be the best deal.
>>
Hiya, /g/, /fit/ here
I'm looking to get a pair of Bluetooth headphones, preferably of the in-the-ear variety, so I can continue to listen to my music while using my camera to record sets.
The jaybird x2's came recommended to me by a fellow /fit/izen, which I could cop on eBay used for like $50, but I was wondering if the shilling out for the x3's would be worth it.
If they're both garbage, I'm open to suggestions, and am open to the idea of getting over-the ear headphones, since noise cancelation/isolation is a bit of a concern since I also commute via the subway.
If it helps, I'm willing to go up to around $200 as far as price point goes.
>>
Anyone know of some good earbuds for less than $50? Over-ears are great but after about 30 min. they get really uncomfortable and they always fuck up my hair. Just looking for something nice to use while in class or while on the go without looking autistic

I asked for advice in this thread last week about a replacement amp and ended up buying a magni 2 on the advice of this thread. Been listening all day and it's just a wonderful amp.

Thanks for the great advice guys.
>>
>>61956197
Reddit is one large circlejerk, but I guess it isn't any better than /hpg/; just a different flavour
>>
>>61956231
you got meme'd, the magni 2 is a shit amp
it's THD is too low to be any good
>>
>>61956208
You misunderstand me. Reddit is fucking retarded, and that's why I mentioned that they hate the m1060. Basically, whatever their opinion of anything is, you can take the opposite of that opinion as the truth of the matter in confidence.

For example, they shill the HD600/650 as being better than literally any headphone ever at ANY price point, even Stax and shit like that. It's absolutely degenerate. Like, if you thought sennshill was bad, ho boy, he's like, just a taste of reddit.
>>
>>61956231
>>61956250
This. The cheapest AMP from 1980 should suffice.

magni 2 is a fantastic amp. Glad you're enjoying it anon. Ignore the trolls, or laugh at their futile efforts, for you are enlightened now and know that the truth points to itself.

How would you know what their opinion was unless you were a redditor yourself? Get out of here, reddit scum.

One pair, the Sony SBH80 are labeled as being Bluetooth compatible, and are listed at $85; probably a happy medium for what you're asking, as far as sound and usage goes

You're right, it doesn't sound very (((warm))), maybe if I hook it up to a cassette player

Unlike you, I didn't come here with firsthand knowledge of reddit. But you're right about one thing - always do the opposite of what reddit says. Which means always do the opposite of what YOU say.
>>
>>61950872

Not really common, but ive fucked up a few and known i've been abusing the jack.
>>
>>61956429
Right, so you should do the opposite of what I said and hate the m1060s then, because I'm from reddit and claimed reddit hates the m1060s. That way you'll be echoing reddit instead of me.

Find a rope and fucking hang yourself.
>>
>>61956447

A DAC will only help if you think your source has issues. There are generally pretty modest improvements to be found here, some would argue none at all.

I have the 80 ohm and it sounds better with an amp, but it isn't absolutely necessary. It doesn't sound bad plugged right into my work PC. But any of the entry-level amp solutions will probably fill it out quite nicely.
>>
>>61955147
>Maybe the HD800 if you're not shooting for true neutrality.

I'm not and my hifiman 560's might be end game for me. They really perform well with any drama. BUT, i have not heard the hd800s and have always coveted them. I just don't know if I will enjoy the music with them. I hear so many bad and great things about them. Also, I really don't want to sacrifice any more bass.
>>
>>61951687
Never tried the razers, but the other 3 are really quite nice.

I love my moments, but sometimes i do need some bass, and the sony's deliver that.

Obviously neither pare is good on the go despite bluteooth, so the koss are still king there.

it's apparently recommended for the Shure SRH1540, but it seems like a sidegrade compared to this so why bother
