MSI fell apart after some years, screen literally broke off, ASUS is still intact after 5+ years.

Now I'm not saying you should buy Asus laptops, all I'm saying is that you could probably have bad luck with any standard "gaming" laptop.

If you just want to play something buy a handheld, if you haven't considered that, if you don't really want to play anything or just shit like hearthstone buy a tablet. My fagbook pro is almost 5 years old and I didn't really like the new one, I will be still waiting for a potential refresh with cofee lake and shit but I want to start considering other options. What is a good laptop that won't feel like cheap shit, won't have a billion of annoying problems and that has a decent GPU so I can vidya all modern stuff on medium settings with consistent 60 fps at least, 3K$ budget.

I'm just suggesting that he look at this from another angle. Most people I know end up using lab computers or their own desktop for heavy lifting, while the "capable" laptop they bought gathers dust. The type of work that most students end up using a laptop for (web browsing, document editing) is served more than adequately by a chromebook, which will be lighter and better built than an equivalently priced windows laptop. So yes, he can spend $600 on a windows laptop and get what he wants, but I think he'll have an overall better experience if he does it my way.

I have used Acer laptops before. All of them that I have used were garbage that fell apart.

Also, the notion that thinkpads would be too expensive is false. Take a look at a Thinkpad T420 with a NVIDIA OPTIIMUS graphics card. If the RAM is not enough, you can upgrade it cheaply. I purchased my T420 for under $90 on Ebay and it was in excellent condition.

Please don't purchase an Acer. These computers are of such low quality it should be criminal. The only thing worse than an Acer is one of the HP cloudbooks.

As for the fans/heat, it doesn't get particularly loud. It will hum a bit, but it does not generate noise to the point that it will be a mental nuisance. I will say - make sure that it is completely off if you have just finished a cpu-intensive task and are not going to use it for a couple hours. I've had an issue where the program was off, but had some background noise that caused the laptop to get really hot. Didn't notice until I pulled it out of my backpack. Now I just set it to shut down every time I close the lid.
