If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Vega NOW.

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor
>>
>Vega NOW
How about Vega NEVER?
I don't see why Vega deserves a line when i7-7700k doesn't.

Reminder to switch power profiles in windows advanced power options to High Preformance, especially on Ryzen (or download AMD's tuned balanced power plan).

Windows fucks with some power switching states and increases latency.

Literally no one is recommending Vega. It's a wonder how AMD even dared to put out such a disgrace after the success of Ryzen. Should've just canceled it and went straight for Navi.
>>

Amazing really how "anti-shills" shill harder then anyone else and keep shitting up these threads, and that RTG fucking up on vega somehow means the i7700k LITERAL DEAD CHIPSET 300$+ QUAD CORE is a better option than any high end ryzen being drop in replacements till 2020.

You start getting diminished returns at around 90 FPS in my opinion. I don't see a reason to ever leave my 120Hz monitor. It's just enough to be perfect. 144Hz+ is enthusiast tier to me. The hardware to drive those framerates is expensive and it's not noticeably better than 120Hz. 60Hz is pretty bad though. At least for competitive FPS.

Because 7700K is an overheating and overpriced piece of shit niche product that demands a more expensive overall package and requires delidding.
RX Vega 64 has bad value for gamers, requires much energy and doesn't catch up with the 1080 and therefore only retards or hybrid users buy it
RX Vega 56 competes wuth 1070 and if it's cheaper it will win the fight.

Any thoughts on this before I pull the trigger?

Got a few questions along with it:

1) Picked an EVO Samsung SSD because it seems popular, is brands like Kingston equally good?

2) The MOBO is Micro-ATX, does this matter? Anything I should take into considerations?

3) There is an "OC" version of the GPU, is it worth the extra few shekles, I have zero intention of OC'ing myself because im retarded and I want my shit to last for as long as possible

>>
>>61946874
The good thing about AMD platforms is that the slot sticks around for a while as opposed to Intel generations. So in that sense it should be more upgrade-able. Either way I've never really seen someone actually upgrade processors and keep their mobo. Maybe ram, gpus, and storage, but I feel like most people keep the core of their machines like the mobo/psu/cpu till the components are clearly outdated.

1300 zen and a 1050 for what you're asking is more than enough and it'll be quite powerful for 1080p gaming in general.

Don't think too much about futureproofing yourself as much as what you need for now and the very near future. You'll probably need to upgrade the 1050 down the line imo.
>>
>>61947144
you might want a bigger ssd
>>
>>61947219
Yeah upgrading the GPU is on the cards too, once the prices settle hopefully. But there's no compatibility problem for that of course.
So you wouldn't advise on keeping the mobo if I change CPUs then? Would a mobo from today be outdated for the next generations of CPU even if the socket is the same?
>>
why are pc parts so expensive? yeah its cheaper than 30 years ago but the process has been so defined i dont see how it's justifiable

>>61947144

>>
>>61947144
Samsung SSDs are really in a class of their own imo. Simply owning an SSD is a big difference, but if you're not really penny-pinching with your build you should go with the Samsung SSDs.

Doesn't look to be anything wrong with that board. The only worry I saw before with older MicroATX boards was that some didn't support higher memory frequency modules, but this does. Memory is compatible with it and the reviews are ok.

OC versions sometimes come with better cooling configurations, but that's about it. The clock differences also aren't anything crazy because the manufacturer needs to cover his ass from having a bunch of hot unreliable cards as there's also chip differences between each card.

I don't think so, but it wouldn't be that difficult to mod one to run from fan connector.
Just cut the lead from your fan and connect the black and red wires (pin 1 and 2) to vibrator motor. Make sure to connect it to a header with voltage control and not PWM. Set the fan (or vibrator) curve in speedfan and you're good to go.

1440p at 144hz is a tall order, anything lower than 1080 is gonna struggle, and even a 1080 won't be able to max all the settings, for that you need a ti and even then you'll have to skimp out on the more demanding extra eye-candy that in no way justifies the performance drop.

I just ordered 2 of pic related from Newegg. That and a 1 to 2 PWM splitter. These will be going inside an itx fractal node 302 case.

Did I dun good? Or should I have sprung for the twice as expensive Noctua 92mm? (Which have lower CFM by the way)

It's so annoying seeing people dropping 300+ for a processor and then go wide eyed about doing the same for gpu.

1700 is the highest anyone should be getting unless they're ready to go full retard with Threadripper.

Nothing is a meme if you have a use case for it. Dual CPU is retarded for gaming only but helpful with VMs, encoding, rendering etc.

Dual GPU is still used a lot for professional setups using firepros or quadros. Even gamers can still make use of it if you're looking to power 3x 144hz 1440p panels. But the xfire/SLI drivers are practically non-existent these days.

Guys can you tell me if is a Laptop problem in general or I am just grazed by bad luck?

>Back to now, he can't even stream a video, today at a temp between 28-30 C° he had to put his laptop over 2 ice tablets, plus a triple fan attachment to avoid the PC from turning off because the temp goes over 80 C°

>Friend bought a Star Wars laptop in 2015-6
>probably between 900 and 1000€, pretty powerful because he wants to play games on it
>NOW: The damn thing seems to take a lifetime loading the OS and he is mad at it because is so damn slow in general.

TLDR: Do Laptops in particular tend to generally slow down after some years? Is it because of a cheap Hard disk? Does replacing it improve it?

Gaming on laptops is a waste of money, getting a Switch on the side is a much better investment.

>>
Is it true that msi boards are less reliable than other brands?
>>
>>61951343
With laptops you have lots of compromises that have been made because everything needs to fit into as small space as reasonably possible. Then you get to add high temperatures due to, well, everything being in as small space as reasonably possible. Add a few years of accumulating dust and not only do the temperatures get even higher, but the components(which weren't too great to begin with because see above) are also degrading that much faster.

>>
Is there a way to determine or a breaking point when I should choose liquid cooling over fan cooling?
>>
>>61953103
It depends on your use cases. Air coolers tend to be quieter because they can use fewer and larger fans on the high end than CLCs. They also have no liquid pumps so noise under load is lower.

CLCs are more effective at working in tight cases and can often open up cooling options that are not possible in smaller cases. In addition, they are easier to work with when it comes to clearance of RAM and PCIe slots.

Custom loop systems tend to outperform both CLC and air because the user can use components that are quieter and higher performance than CLC parts. They also can be used to cool GPUs and CPUs which cuts down no the noise level by centralizing cooling in one efficient system. What they are not efficient at is cost.

I know this isn't exactly building a pc, but I figure this is the best place to get some decent advice on laptop configurations. I didn't choose to be a laptop hobo, but I'm trying to make the best of it.

I want to get a laptop with a GTX 1060, mostly for gaming and general fuckery.

My budget is around €1200. So far I've narrowed it down to the following configurations. These all include a 1TB 7200rpm HDD:
I7-6700, 8GB 2133MHz ram, 17" screen, 128GB SSD, €1149
I7-6700,16GB 2133MHz ram, 15.6" screen, 256GB SSD, €1243
I7-7700, 8GB 2400MHz ram, 15.6" screen, 256GB SSD, €1386 (can downgrade ram to 2133MHz but only save €10)

Alternatively, I could get a laptop with a 1050ti, i5-7300, 8GB 2400MHz ram, 500GB SSD + 500GB HDD for €1122.

Now, I know we all hate laptops around here but I really don't have a choice in the matter. It's new laptop or keep struggling to play videogames in potato mode on this old laptop.

I guess the questions I can't answer for myself are if a 7700 is significantly better than a 6700, or a 7300, and if the difference between 2133MHz and 2400MHz ram is noticeable.

All of the monitors on these laptops are 1080p@60Hz.
How much would I need to drop graphics quality going from a 1060 to a 1050Ti in games like witcher 3 and star citizen?

As a side note, most of these come with win10, how likely am I to be able to run win7 or at least 8.1 on them without turning them into bricks?

your build isn't so dated that you'd notice as much of an improvement as a lot of people here but Ryzen's the hot thing right now, and it would be an upgrade. That depends if it's a 3 gig 1060 or a 6 gig one. If you're going to get a 1060, do yourself a favour and get a 6 gig one. A 1060 3 gig will run better than a 1050 Ti, but it's not cost efficient at all.

A 1060 6 Gig card will be able to handle pretty much all games on max/near the max settings at 60 FPS on 1080P for the next couple years at least.

The 1050 Ti will be able to maintain 60 FPS on high settings, but you'll need to turn it down a bit in the next few years to have the same results (at 1080P).

If you're not gonna get another laptop for a while, and can spare the extra dosh, I'd get a 1060. The 1050 Ti is a good card for the price, but it's a budget card nonethelesss.

i'd get a 7200rpm hdd unless you're 100% sure this one will be used for storage only. normal program & games will load significantly slowly on 5900rpm than 7200rpm
you probably don't need an optical drive

all of those use next to nothing in terms of wattage.

Granted AMD isn't above doing that kind of misleading marketing but i assume that's not from AMD since it makes them look way worse than it is.

Can someone explain this meme about older CPUs bottlenecking GPUs in lower resolutions but not at higher resolutions?
>>
>>61955443
Lower resolution results in higher fps which means higher CPU usage. High resolutions are dependent on GPU horse power and CPU isn't doing much because of lower frame rate.
>>
>>61955505
Right. But it would usually still result in 60+ fps right? I have a i5-3570k (can't overclock) and I'm trying to decide between a 1080 and 1070 since there's barely a pricing difference in the ones that are available here.

Guys, is this monitor good?
>1440p
>144hz
>1ms response time
>27''
>only 330€ (in my country)
This looks too good to be true. Should I go for it?

Will my r5 1600 @3.7ghz bottleneck a gtx1080 @1080p in war thunder and modern AAA titles?
>>
>>61955606
not worth it
>>
I hate cryptoniggers so goddamn much. >€430 1070s are sold out
>€500+ are the only ones available
>>
>>61955801
But people constantly talk about getting 144hz, the minimal response time and good resolution.
I want a good monitor so I can use a 1080 ti but 4k is overkill for me
>>
>>61955858
then go 1440p at 60Hz

If there's barely a price difference, just get a 1080.
>>
>>61955931
Sorry for being so dumb, but then any game that runs above 60fps, if the refresh rate is 60hz, then it will be bottleneck at 60fps right?
>>
>>61955934
It's like €50 so yeah. I guess I'll be future proofed for years now.

If that CPU is really at 3.5Ghz right now, get some good cooling and OC it. That 290X is fine just power hungry AF. Really not compelling enough to upgrade in the current GPU market imo
>>
>>61955972
there's a difference between "future-proofing" and "won't fall desperately behind quite so fast"
