Why does moving windows feel so fucking shit on Gnome?

Why does it randomly snap to certain parts of my screen if I move it?

Why is everything like 5fps and clunky as fuck?

Why is firefox so choppy when I scroll?

Why does multi monitor not work properly, and desktop icons appear on the wrong monitor / on both?

Why are all the animations choppy?

Why is linux STILL so insanely SHIT on the Desktop?

I thought gnome was suppose to be the most developed?
>>
>>61937068
check your compiz checking. do you have the proper drivers for your graphics card? if not, falling back to vesa mode = snail mode.

Moving windows feels shit in most DEs.

Look out for move mode with a Modifier like ALT.

So you can hold down the ALT button and grab/drag the window at any position you want.

Pretty cool shit.

woah, i thought that was windows when i simply glanced at it
im just gonna stick to i3

no compiz on wayland and wayland is the reason it's slow as molasses
>>
>>61937848

Moving windows has never been as smooth on Linux distributions as it is with Wayland compositors. Every frame is perfect, there is no tearing or artifacts.
End yourself you fucking retarded meme spouter.

Not with Nvidia. OP has Steam. Xe (he/she/they) must be using Nvidia. No sensible AMD users will want to play video games on Linux. I mean, what are you? An Anonymous baby pretending to be a hacker?

You answered your own question. GNOME 3.x is universally despised except by ricers, but it's so ubiquitous as "the" Linux desktop that competing with it is difficult.
>>
>>61941260
As opposed to the one that literally doesn't work? You're really taking the whole 4chan contrarian thing to heart
>>
>>61937068
go kde it doesnt have those issues autists can't understand.
>>
>>61941292
It does work, I'm running it now.
I don't use smoothscrolling or animations though, so it doesn't bother me.
>>
>>61941192
What is this acceptable compositor? I have no issues with compton, although I have AMD. Does it have issues with nvidia?
>>
>>61941404
Anything based on Wayland I suppose. It's supposed to replace X11 and fix it faults.

Just tried running both X11 and Wayland, and both seem to run exactly the same as far as I can tell, kudos to Wayland, I suppose. I wanted to test with a game, but Steam won't run at the moment, so I'll have troubleshoot that.

I think both compositor only do 60 fps for windows though, that might be why they seem laggy, seeing as I have a 144 hz monitor.
>>
>>61941834
Oh, I didn't know gnome moved to Wayland, I don't use it. Why is Wayland better than X, quick rundown?
>>
>>61937068
>use a DE written in JS
>wonder why it's shit
>>
>>61941968
One article reads:
>X11 is slow and a patchwork of bolted-on code that makes it hard to modernize. What’s worse is that there’s only a small group of X11 developers that even understand the technology. It is because of this that X11 has slowly gotten worse as the years have gone on.

A (very) long read on the subject:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=x_wayland_situation&num=1

Of course, you're probably not gonna read that, so have an interesting outtake from it:
>The X Server is huge and stupid. Before we (the community) began to scrap pieces of it and work around it, it was almost an entire OS.
>Don't believe me? X had its own print server. It got binned after someone added Xprint support to glxgears.
>It was a binary interpreter for ELF, COFF and a.out.

The quick rundown would be: bloated, inefficient, hacked together, outdated and insecure.

>>61942119
>It got binned after someone added Xprint support to glxgears.

kek. I will read that, thanks.
>>
Too bad Wayland is still shit and unusable. You can't even use Redshift with it.
>>
Gnome and Wayland are memes. Enjoy your laggy mouse because the main javascript(!!!) UI thread can't handle a little workload

Didn't actually know it was made in Javascript, assumed only the extensions were.
Problem for me is that the desktop is exactly what I need, and I don't know of any other DEs that do the same thing. I managed to get XFCE pretty close with some widgets, but then the taskbar stopped working completely, and nothing would fix it, so I had to abandon that ship.

As for that laggy mouse thing, I haven't noticed it and I can't reproduce it, though when I recorded in 60 fps, I can see the mouse in the video (only in the video, not on my screen as I am recording) running at slideshow speed.
