I'm thinking of learning go, but its dependency management looks really retarded. Is it really just pointing to a git repo in import statements in the source code or am I missing something?

I generally use godeps for larger projects.

The path is relative to $GOPATH/src and $GOROOT/src environment variables. Run following to see info:

$ go env

You can set $GOPATH manually. If you need actual package management, google 'gpm'. Pretty clever script - it changet GOPATH for a scope of that script to project's root directory, fetches sources with 'go get' and depending on source control tool (mostly git though) switch them to specified commit/release/tag/...
