Is it practical to buy a new inexpensive chromebook and then wipe the bios with SeaBIOS in order to run native debian linux or is it still a fiddly hack to run another operating system on it?

I want a lightweight long life battery laptop so I can program outside for hours at a time.

what about those linux laptop

I think they're on chrome like builds

light book maybe?
>>
You're at starbucks. Just get a Macbook to get the full fag package.
>>
A friend of mine I went to college with had a chromebook that he'd stuck in a small Lenovo case and was running Ubuntu on it. It was a fucking hack job, but it worked alright, so I see no reason that another OS would be a problem.

This is your answer OP.
>>
Depends where you draw your line for practicality. I know I'm not terribly busy on weekends so fiddly as it may be I'd do it.
>>
Yes it is extremely practical.

It's what I am typing on right now, and I have a shitty dual core braswell Chromebook that dual boots in to galliumos.

It has a ridiculous battery life, I let it sit for a week in stand by on vacation and it still had 10% battery, I have watched movies on Netflix on it streaming to a bluetooth speaker for at least 8 hours straight.

The state of linux on chromebooks is so much better than it used to be.

I had been using a Chromebook with Gentoo quite a bit.

Thinkpad X220 with few extra batteries if you want. Keyboard is best of laptops, and Vim+TLP will give you 6~ hours of battery life. Pretty sure it's more powerful than chromebooks too.
But X220s has shit display mostly, couldn't find anything other than TN display ones in my country
>>
>>61921613
I'm with >>61922002 on this, I have one of the dual core Acer chromebooks running only Gallium. Shit is amazing on battery life and serves me well for mobile general use and programming, not a bad option at all
>>
how good are the graphics drivers for the arm chromebooks? Are any of them open source?

or is it better to go with intel here? The open source intel drivers for linux are pretty excellent, atleast compared to the state they're in on windows.

Have a C720 Chromebook (Gadwall Celeron, 4GB RAM, 16 Storage) that runs Arch with MATE desktop. It runs pretty well, was useable even on KDE since I have 4GB version, but the CPU and GPU are really underwhelming. Any light task like writing code or web browsing is adequate but can easily reach 70%+ usage just watching one 720p video (and you can forget about 1080p).
Maybe for newer Chromebooks the hardware is more capable (would greatly recommend atleast an I3 still).
As for Linux support, most of the drivers that you need are in the newer kernel arleady. The touchpad needed some tweaking to be good, the shortcut keys are a simlle tweak and suspend was a a mess to fix on some distros/desktols until I flashed a custom firmware that fixed that issue globally. If you want something that just works run GalliumOS.
biggest issue with this laptop are tiny screen and the really bad bettery that aged very poorly. It barely holds 60% charge anymore and makes it very annoying to use.

Running GalliumOS on my Dell CB 13 and it works great. Battery life is awesome even without powertop and display is readable even with no scaling (1080p, 13 in.). Installing Linux/SeaBIOS took me all of ten minutes and everything worked out of the box as well. I have pretty good performance because I have an actual i3 in mine, but YMMV because ARM chips suck/have compat issues and atoms can be slow too.

Could probably put Arch on it if you wanted, there are tons of resources/utilities/tutorials.

Usefull for some people but are you sure you aren't better off just lifting?

>long battery
The laptop is 80% battery, 20% computer (not kidding, look at a Macbook Air assembly). It won't last too long if it runs the Whole GNU stack instead of just a browser though.

Also I love macbooks and starbucks and my code is always perfect so fuck yourself. Just like the perfection of my less than a pound full laptop, everything I do is perfect. Birds of a feather flock together.

I'm running arch on a cb3-131, make sure you google prior to buying in order to be sure that the kernel will support everything, for example you might need an older/patched kernel to get the audio to work.
You really don't want to use a DE too.
Other than that it's light and robust, the battery life is great, it's fanless and it have an IPS screen (unlike thinkpads).
