what you need to do is change into a terminal usually ctrl+alt+F2 or just alt+F2 then from there run journalctl and look for which unit failed

it got to the dm, so xorg is working properly. it could be wayland (although I don't know if MATE supports it), or a misconfiguration in the DE.
