How fucked I am wanting to build a Matias QC keyboard? I feel like I can forget about ABS/PBT keycaps, the problem will be getting buttons of proper size...
>>
>>61890199
Matias sell keycaps directly and SP have ALPS mount molds. You'll be ok.

I ordered new keycaps for my board, and now some of the keys that use stabilizers are stiff and come loose when you push them at the ends. They're all properly installed, they're just stiff and definitely feel wrong. I'm using the ones that came with the board, should I order new ones and see if they work? Is this normal?
>>
I am ordering this keyboard:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2754

I am also debating some custom keycaps for use on my mac..would these work with the ducky one?

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/PBT-laser-Keycaps-mac-Keys-in-OEM-Profile-With-Cherry-MX-Stems-PBT-plastic-command-option/32821794302.html
>>
>>61890909
Ducky uses a standard layout with OEM keycaps, so yeah they'll work
>>
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/E-3LUE-K753/32806771212.html

Thoughts?
Apparently its good.
>>
>>61890215
Matias only has a standard set (at least shift is long) and specialised for two ortholinear keyboards (which I'm not sure would be comfortable at all), Signature Plastics only take group orders, don't they?

Also, I feel like staying under $150 will be tough.
>>
What's the deal with /g/ disapproval of cherry switches recently?

I've used a noppoo choc mini for 9 years and it uses cherry mx reds. I love this board, maybe it's the new cherry switches that are shit?

Objective critique of the cherry mx switches would be appreciated.

Someone red pill me please.
>>
>>61889597
Nice looking board. Shame the layout's a bit shit, and the under lighting is so fucking gay it makes Isaac Hempstead Wright blush, but, still, I kind of like it.
>>
>>61891152
>What's the deal with /g/ disapproval of cherry switches recently?
Contrarinism. I realized that too, /mkg/ used to shill browns like crazy and suddenly they hate them. When I pointed that out, some asshole randomly pulled a three year old thread from the archives I guess assuming I'd be wrong but sure enough half the fucking posts were recommending browns. Cherries are just too mainstream for enthusiasts to admit they like now I guess. There's literally nothing wrong with them.
>>
>>61891152
They have decent enough linear switches, but after their patents expired a lot of companies started making clones that are much better (smoother, better weighting, and more tactile).
Not to mention matias, topre, and buckling spring switches exist, which are better than cherry and clones in just about every way minus keycap options.
>>
>>61891214
Have you tried other switches like Gaterons? How do they compare?
>>
>>61891233
Could you explain the objective differences between the Matias, toppre , and buckling spring switches when compared to mx cherries?
>>
>>61880742
>>61880993
I own two of those. They have a backplate.

>>
>>61891152
>>61891214
This. I got browns after extensive shilling three years ago. And now suddenly /mkg/ and fucking plebbit got "sand" in their switches.
>>
>>61891099
SP put ALPS granite on their PMK storefront, but still under $150 you're having a laugh mate
>>
>>61891254
Well, here is a basic summary:
Matias uses metal for the contact and tactile leaf rather than a bump on the stem that the produces the tactile bump, resulting in a smoother and more tactile feel. Matias switches can be opened up while they are on the board rather than having to desolder the switch to clean or maintain them. They last just as long as cherry switches.
Mx switches on the other hand, are a simpler design, so less shit can go wrong with them. They don't have as much key wobble as matias and are less prone to key chatter. They also have more availability.
Buckling spring is an extremely stable design that has less key wobble than both and more tactility than both.
They are, however, loud and are only found on used boards or unicomp boards. So you take a gamble on how good the build quality is going to be.
Im not >>61891233 so I Can't speak for topre.
>>
>>61891152
>>61891214
>>61891239
Unfortunately, Cherry's new molds aren't as good as they used to be. Almost every Gateron is better than their Cherry equivalent, except for Blues, people still openly debate that one, but Browns and Reds are decided in Gateron's favor. Cherry Clears are still decent switches, but if overpriced Zealios didn't exist, Gateron probably would've made a better alternative, but for now Cherry Clears are still a good cheap option for medium tactile switches. And if anyone has tried Kailh's new speed and box switches, those are actually shaping up to be better than Cherry too, especially Box White switches.

Cherry is still better than Greetech, Outemu, etc though, and buying a Cherry keyboard is still a good choice, but Gateron is still on top right now.
>>
>>61891152
>recently
Ever since gaterons came out people began to realize how much better they are. Heck even most of the popular enthusiast switches are made by gateron
>>
>>61889597

What are the loudest switches availabile?
Are any of the chink mechanical keyboards good?

>Are any of the chink mechanical keyboards good?
Plenty
>>
>>61892365
Thanks,
So I've been using a CM quickfire with brown Cherry MX switches.
I liked it because it was a minimalistic design with no RGB bullshit.
For some reason it's no longer working, so what would be a good (and cheap) chink alternative for it ?

Then It will be a good keyboard.

Nothing, you just have to wait until 2020 to actually get a set. On a more serious note, a lot of people don't like how high profile they are, and this usually leads to uncomfortable typing. But the biggest issue is of course the fact that they're expensive and SP has a fuck huge backlog that's usually met with delays so you'll never actually get the set you bought 2 years ago.

Cherry silent red/black
Matias quiet click/linear
GMK silencing clips for MX-style switches, if you're using Cherry profile keycaps
>>
>>61895912
What's the difference between clips and o-rings?
>>
>>61896082
O-rings dampen the sound of the keycap hitting the top of the switch when you press it all the way down

Clips prevent the switch stem from hitting the top of the switch fully when released and when you use Cherry profile keycaps it also somewhat dampens the sound of them hitting the top of the switch

You can combine the two, but I've heard people say that that makes bottoming out too mushy and soft

I think it really depends on what plate you want to get. With the low case/floating key design it give you a much better view of the plate on the edges.
I recently did a build with a carbon fibre plate and, while this isn't the best photo, it looks pretty nice. Not sure if I want to keep these caps on though.

Mechanical keys are far more noisy than any dome or scissor switch key. Even the non-clicky reds. I want the sound of my typing to be little more than the sound of the momentum of my keystrokes being dispersed into my desk, ideally.

If you are buying a tada 68 just know that 90% of the keycaps out there are a downgrade in quality and the only way you'd be getting something better is if you spend $100+
>>
>>61889597
My first mech keyboard ever is arriving today. I got a black Qisan Magicforce 60% with brown Gateron switches for $60 on Amazon. Hopefully everything fucking works
>>
>>61901629
Oh it should work just fine, though if you are a man with taste, you will feel the need to switch keycaps right the fuck away. Those things are hideous.
>>
>>61901673
Yeah I've been looking into it. I figure I'll order some after about a week's use. It's cool that keycaps are standardized e.g. I know the board has an ANSI layout and the switches are a standard cherry, so I should have a lot of options.

mech keyboards are cool, I'm excited
>>

>>
>>61901539
Yeah, that is currently my main pain point now. I am so very happy with my current TADA68, both form factor and switch and keycap quality.
It's just, I really am not a fan of the beige color scheme. Just looking for something more... modern.

Battle of the 61%
WASD 61 key VS Leopold FC660M

Same switch, same price, which is the superior keyboard, if there is one.
>>
>>61901922
Leopold by a mile
>>
>>61895741
topre with kbdfans silence-x might be the quietest.
>>
>>61901922
Bumping for you anon, I'm in the same situation myself.
The WASD is smaller, but I love having a dedicated delete key
>>
>>61901922
It pretty clearly comes down to how much you value arrow keys if you ask me. I'd get the WASD if I was buying a keyboard for typing as its more standard looking and has totally normal keycaps for easy replacement.
I couldn't play vidya with either though as I need my f row.
>>
>>61901993
Both are standard caps, and both have Fun row through the fn key
>>
>>61901888
theres an all-white tada68.
>>
>>61902023
Doesn't matter, every 60% has it through the fn key. It's still unusable to me personally for playing vidya.
It looks like the primary difference between those two boards is the arrow keys.
Also how can they both be standard if they have different sized right shift keys?
>>
>>61901922
Leopold of course.
>>
The wasd has shitty abs keycaps. Leopold is eventually getting pbt on pbt doubleshot though.
>>
>>61902026
I know. If you see a white TADA with blank CYMK mods here or on Reddit, that was me.
That white one is at my office. I have another one at home, with the old beige color scheme, which I'm considering getting new keycaps.
>>
>>61902246
Then get those all black keycaps made by EnjoyPBT
>>
>>61902023
The Leopold has 2 same-sized Shift, which is worse for getting keycaps than a TADA with its 1.75u Shift.
>>
>>61902277
Wouldn't that make it easier since its the same size as a standard left shift, unlike the custom one the tada68 has?
>>
>>61902335
Most standard keycap sets have 2 Shift sizes, 2.25U and 2.75U.
With the TADA, it's harder, but many keycap sets have extra mod kits with the 1.75U, so it's just a bit more expensive.
With the Leopold, chances are, if you REALLY want a keycap set, you will need to buy 2 base kits for those 2 same-sized Shift keys. It's a real bitch.
Source: I have 1 Leopold and 2 TADA.
>>
I just received my enjoyPBT keycaps today and they are terrible, my abs keycaps that came with my magicforce108 are better. I can't believe you guys actually tricked me into buying that shit.
>>
>>61902420
Why are you lying on the internet?
>>
>>61902440

>>
>>61902464

>>
>>61893671
I think you mean DSA. Or XDA, and flat profiles in general.

There are definitely no SA sets that will fit this, since SA is sculpted and I don't think any SA sets come with 1.5u R4 keycaps, R1 End, R2 PgDn and R3 PgUp.

And DSA is one of the lowest profiles.

My Steelseries 6gv2 of 3 years is beginning to get quite severe key stuttering on the m, l, r and a keys.
Other than the key stuttering which started a couple of months ago on the m key it had been a solid buy. Will miss the cheap chap.

Can anyone recommend a solid replacement?
>>
>>61903525
Yeah desolder and replace the chattering switches, or get a capacitive switch like a plum 84 so you don't have to worry about those contact based switches
>>

I had the same keyboard, started registering double presses just over a year in which pissed me off.

I got an Aivia which uses brown switches.

Shit, I'll give it some thought. I did just splash £350 on an F77 a few weeks ago, so I might hold off for a while.

I'm also not the original anon that asked the question (though I'm also a britbong), so he might get back to you as well. Though, >>61901181, smartimports.net has them somewhat cheaper (in the £170 range).
>>
As I lurk more, my optimism for building my own keyboard (especially on Matias) dwindles every day. Seems like it's much cheaper to buy a MX-based keyboard (even chinkshit) - then replace switches and keycaps at my own pace.

Could you suggest what options do I have for:

<$100
>Preferred switch type
Tactile non-clicky (chances some use Gateron Brown or Outemu Purple already?)
>Layout
ANSI for that long left shift
>Form factor

Not important, but good for modding
>>

This board just came in and...I dunno if I love it. It's Gateron browns and it's annoyingly loud, so I put my orings on and it's still loud. Also I'm not blown away by the feel of a mech keyboard. Maybe it's a "learn to love it over time" thing.

Nah because it was $10 plus I'd have to buy another $10 for shipping because I didn't have Amazon Prime, so that was $20 I could put towards a keyboard, so I did that instead.

It's not so much the sound that's a negative as much as it is the feel. I guess I was expecting something revolutionary by having it built up so much in my mind. The awesomeness of mech keyboards has been praised forever, so they can't really live up to the hype.

I am typing fast on it though. I did the type racer game and got 124 wpm with 98% accuracy, so I dunno

Yeah, I've read about plate clips, but then only found the pcb ones, which is why I asked.

Fuck, I'm really frustrated by keyboard enthusiast world. At least keycap sizes are standard. But otherwise it's a fucking trash. Looking for DIY, all I can find is either cheap cases for pricey keyboards or cheap PCBs that have no cases. And a liberal use of modifier key sizes for the bottom row everywhere.

Is there a single DIY project which price doesn't go into infinity? Surely between ricers who are ready to wait for their caps for years and edgy gaming chinkshit, there must be a few true neckbeards whose only goal is to create a decent, complete project...

In a good or bad way?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to mechanical keyboards, but someone on geekhack had gotten some samples and said these switches were actually decent.
https://m.alibaba.com/product/60625893604/Long-life-ultra-thin-Mechanical-Keyboard.html
Anyone tried them? Will I be able to make a board with these? Where are the contact points? Anything I should know before ordering?
Thanks in advance senpais.

I think the, uh, transitions between the stages in the tactile-ness are a little sharper? I'm going to take some apart and do a more detailed comparison tomorrow. I can say that the contacts seem to be different metal, or just plated differently, from the older ones. This may be part of the changes to reduce chatter.

Nice, thank you! The universal TKL case alone set a lot of things in my head straight.

Is there any keyboard out there that has the multimedia keys/convenience that a Corsair K70 LUX RGB has but isn't as shit?
>>
>>61911636
Yeah there are a couple
>>
>>61911646
Cool thanks.

Could you list them please? Or just the brands if that's too much trouble?
>>
>>61911669
Yeah those chink ones

me too thanks

I'm super dependent on my corsairs volume wheel. The other controls, not so much.
>>
>>61912242
get one of these

https://www.amazon.com/DROK-Control-Controller-Adjusting-Computers/dp/B016U2KXCG/

it's got about equal functionality to the corsair wheel (it has click to mute). adds desk clutter, but beats having no multimedia hotkeys.
>>
>>61911636
Anything fully programmable. I'm using an old thing from the 70's and I have <<, >>, Play/Pause, and Volume Up/Down all mapped to keys.

Ducky keyboards have programmable media keys. By default you have volume controls, but since I don't use the numpad I set the rest of them there

I'm looking for a modern keyboard that is like the pcjr's one. I mean with stuff like a dedicated Fn key
>>
>>61912687
Most 65% or 75% boards fall into that.
>>
>>61912348
Cool, but $27 for a USB potentiometer?
>>
>>61913556
Consider, you could buy a good chink board over the K70, then buy that, and still save money.
>>
>>61900844
You mean one draws 20 times more power for no good reason and its onboard usb hub doesn't work for shit because it doesn't have enough juice left over.
>>
>>61910498
>what are eneloops
As an added bonus they don't fucking explode.
>>
>>61914148
>taking the batteries out of your keyboard to charge it
>you now have a useless hunk of plastic until they're done charging unless you bought an extra pair
>spending $50-60 on 2 pairs of batteries and special charger on top of the cost of the keyboard for the privilege of doing this
Yeah that sounds like a great idea, anon!

You mean a bog standard AA charger usable on any brand of nimh and nicad? Seeing as the batteries don't explode if they get the wrong special snowflake charge.
Also useful in everything from flashlights to remotes, a multimeter, electric pepper mill, my fucking kitchen scale...
And they basically last decades because they don't permanently degrade in capacity just sitting there.
Hell I'm still using the same 16 sanyo-branded eneloop cells and a charger from a pack I got at costco for like $25 eight years ago. They all still retain nearly all of their original capacity.
Pic related. Only one of these batteries still holds a charge.
>>
>>61914365
>flashlight
>electric pepper meill
Who the fuck actually owns those these days? What, do you not have a phone and are too lazy to grind pepper yourself?
>remote
>scale
Wow things that only need their batteries replaced once every few years, truly buying into a $50 ecosystem to save myself from essentially making a one-off purchase of a $5 pack of disposable AAs is a great idea
>multimeter
I've been using an old 9V battery multimeter I inherited from my dad my whole life and in decades of use it has never needed that battery replaced.

A phone can't do pic related, and the pepper mill is great.
>Wow things that only need their batteries replaced once every few years
With a Harmony 650? That's a good one.
>it has never needed that battery replaced.
In other words you don't use it. Same for weighing ingredients for cooking, I'd wager.

Why don't Unicomp make M15 ergonomic buckling spring keyboards?
>>
>>61914862
Oh wow it's actually supposed to be like that, even the official product photos on MD show no fixing pin holes for those two switches in the bottom right area. 10/10
>>
>>61914891
It was annoying finding out when it's the last switch I put in. I couldn't find any official documentation on it, but came across a few people in the discussion area saying to just chop the switch; which works but still, bit shit.
>>
>>61914870
They're still in the works in an ssk. And that had been going on since god knows when. Also not that many people are interested in an m15
