Will icecat go with webextensions when they need to upgrade?

It seems that Icecat is just firefox with some privacy tweaks and extensions installed by default.
Using Icecat is just buying more time, i doubt they will fork and go their seperate way since thats a different project entirely.
Well i guess in time we can decide whether its gonna be Icecat or Palemoon.

all of the source is open, sync and feedback/crash reporting isnt a botnet and can be disabled in about:config

lastly while icecat is great it depends on firefox and if firefox dies icecat will too because they are just a respin off the base and cant handle development on their own

Have you guys read the article?
It just says Firefox is creating a truth initiative:
https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2017/08/08/mozilla-information-trust-initiative-building-movement-fight-misinformation-online/

Quote:
"Mozilla’s innovations director, Katharina Borchert, told AFP that the organization was working on tools for Firefox and better online education with media groups, universities, and tech activists.

The “Mozilla Information Trust Initiative” comes just as an automated real-time fact-checking engine dubbed the “bullshit detector” was demonstrated in London.

The group that created the fact-checking engine, Full Fact foundation, is backed by Omidyar and our favorite billionaire tycoon Soros."

And Geroge Soros DID fund Full Fact Foundation.
Are you guys...Fake News?

I'm willing to believe you if you can provide evidence, which you have failed to do so far. Reading a blog post does not count as evidence. This is what I need

>The group that created the fact-checking engine, Full Fact foundation, is backed by Omidyar and our favorite billionaire tycoon Soros.

I need evidence, hard evidence that Soros has funded this. If you can provide that, actual evidence, then I'll believe you.

So far I'm pretty disappointed at /g/'s critical thinking skills on this matter. Reading something in a blog post does not make it true. I need evidence.

Wait a minute... one more thing.

>Mozilla’s innovations director, Katharina Borchert, told AFP that the organization was working on tools for Firefox and better online education with media groups, universities, and tech activists.

>The “Mozilla Information Trust Initiative” comes just as an automated real-time fact-checking engine dubbed the “bullshit detector” was demonstrated in London.

The "activist" blog says Mozilla is using the "bullshit detector" funded by Soros.

Where is the evidence of this? Do we know the technical specifics of Mozilla's software? It's possible they may be using their own stuff and not what Soros has invested in. It could be coincidence they launched a project around the same time.

Need more evidence.

>>
>>61890347
Because I googled it myself and found it was the first result before I posted the first time.

Maybe I was lazy, but why do I need to provide the link when a quick verification is all that is needed? I'm not actually trying to debate. I generally don't try to respond to issues such as these, but I wanted to have people at least read the article.

Don't get me wrong, the author definitely had an agenda in his headline, but if people would read the article they could form their own opinions instead of:
>>61889801
>>61890069

>>61890391
I don't read that as "Firefox is using search engine"
I read it as
"This Initiative is coming out at the same time as the "bullshit detector"
>>
>>61890468
>Mozilla's initiative is coming out around the same time as the Soro's funded "bullshit detector", therefore Mozilla is using that software

It's possible, but it's also possible that it's just a coincidence. Therefore, I can't count this as evidence. There's no proof unfortunately.
>>
>>61890463

Nah, it is about waking to reality.

The masses already crossed the Rubicon years ago.

> I don't even use Chrome
>>
>>61890518

I don't think the Initiative is using the search engine from Full Fact either. I read it as
"Mozillia Initiative (for fact checking) announced near same time as Full Fact search engine releases, showing Mozilla is joining fight."
I never claimed Firefox is using the search engine from Full Fact.

My statement does not imply that Soros and Mozilla are working hand-in-hand, but rather they are creating fact checking initiatives such as what facebook and google are trying.

Ergo, they are "joining the fight against Fake News", but not actually "working together against Fake News"

I'm not going to deny the article having an agenda, but it's not actually wrong. It doesn't say that Mozilla and Full Fact are working together, but that they are working towards similar thing.

It's just as for-profit as any other company, only there are no shareholders, only corporate bigwigs getting fat checks.

For me the main issue with Firefox nowdays is the bloat. The browser is no longer simple and efficient, which was the reason I switched to it a long time ago, it has become bogged down with features I wasn't asking for. I once thought extensions are to be used to enhance funcationality but instead they implemented a lot of stuff I personally didn't need.

I don't need to run Firefox with a phone friendly UI.
I don't need a special reading-mode that ruins the layout.
I don't need multi device synchronization support via some dubious account system.
I don't need search-bars and search-bar buttons in various locations, especially not in the address bar so that I select some search-provider garbage when I press the down-arrow too often to go through related URLs.
I don't need any default search bar plugins to begin with. If I want any, I'd install them.
I don't need the browser to upload my hardware info to in return download suggested performance settings and overwrite what I set beforehand.
I don't need the browser to contact a safe-browsing website each time I open a different one to make sure it's "safe" or blocking anything as result.

This is all garbage that just increases memory consumption, loading times and probably drains clock cycles in the background, not even mentioning the risk to my privacy.
They should have focussed on performance and security and let people do the rest with extensions so they can pick their own fate. This is a typical case of accounting driven development - making a safe and simple framework to browse with isn't as lucrative as selling esoteric garbage features and probably selling user data on the side.

Good job on Rust, though, Mozilla. I hope it takes off an finally FINALLY wipes C off the map.

By that logic, what's wrong with anything under the right circumstances? I mean, with the right specs, and without regards to privacy, there's no reason not to use Windows 10.

Just because something works acceptably doesn't mean the product itself is good. Just because you ignore the bad doesn't mean the bad isn't there.

Learn to use a computer or stop using a computer. You're making it more difficult for the rest of us by creating a market for less-than-ethical companies to create proprietary technologies in the name of making things "easier". These technologies in turn harm everyone by forcing industry standard away from hard/software that respects your freedom.

What >>61895926 has found is an index of a directory containing a list of other directories. Inside you will likely find either compressed binaries or compressed tar archives of source code, which you can compile for a binary locally.
>>
>>61896278
I go by the logic, do all my shopping, forum posting where I have to log in, signing up for game logins etc on firefox. All youtube and 4chan on chrome.

I want to get swap to firefox for 4chan though because the tabs shrink to atoms on chrome.
Opera for torrent searches because of the built in vpn.
Spreading the load over 2/3 browsers means I never get to the point where it reaches critical mass.
>>
>>61896343
I'm not saying they should change it. I just want to know how the fuck to download that shit.
>>
>>61896343
Alternatively, IceCat could just allow itself to be installed through the terminal via repositories.

I'm not bending over backwards to get something to work. You want me to replace FF, you have to make it superior to FF, including, but not limited to, the installation.

>>61896350
I didn't ask for your justification to use chrome. I answered your question: under the right context, and ignoring the flaws included, you can justify using anything.

Pyrope is the best if you don't mind some of the quirkiness.

FF died after 3.6/3.7, now it's just a company with a large user base and a bad case of "innovating" and "leading the industry".

Any WE FlashGot alternatives yet?
There's a Download Star that allows you to download all files on the page, and that's pretty cool, but what about downloading audio/video streams? I'm not talking about YouTube or any specific site, but just any video in general.
>>
>>61897264
Correct answer is it's not slower, nor should there be much ram difference.
The only difference is a 64 bit might try to process a 64 bit value in a calculation. While 32 bits won't process above 32 bits.
>>
>>61897420
amd64 is generally faster because it has twice as many general purpose CPU registers as x86.
>>
Fack off with that shit.

>>61897420
>64 bit might try to process a 64 bit value in a calculation. While 32 bits won't process above 32 bits.
people who dont know how computers works shouldnt be able to post on /g/...
>>61897220
sometimes it might be slower sometimes it might be faster. 64bit mode has a larger instruction set available, some stuff can be done quicker. but while in this mode, some 32bit and lower instructions become "unavaialable", or do not meet the requirements, thus leading to using slower alternatives. on average it should be the same performance level with ability to use more ram if needed
