How can I extend the life of my smartphone's battery?
Is it best to always have it plugged into charger as much as possible?
Should you stop charging it before it hits 100%?
There aren't any more tricks like that with using modern lithium batteries. The answer is simple now: use it less. That's it.
Now if you're storing, as opposed to using, you should store them at about 40% and check on them periodically.

so it doesn't matter if I use it until it hits about 10% before I charge it? I thought letting lithium iron batteries discharge that much was bad

It doesn't matter. They all have circuitry to prevent excess discharge.

Doesn't matter at all. My Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 still works and I use it for offline password storage. I was never careful with "extending battery life" and the phone went unused for 2-3 years and it fully recharged fine last year.
You're more likely to replace the device long before you notice the battery degrading.
Battery degradation is a meme.
