Since /g/ is filled with Intel/AMD shilling and shitposting lately, let's try something a bit different.

Friendly /hedt/ thread. What kind of setup do you have (or plan to build) and what kind of work do you typically do with it?
>>
>>61887340
I'm looking to build a system that allows Linux host, Windows guest with GPU passthrough.

That would be pretty sweet. Would need 8 cores, 16Gb RAM (minimum) and a GPU for both Linux and Windows.

It's a minefield of information though to find what I need.
>>
>>61887340
Nobody needs moer than 4 cores, don't pretend you do because you fucking don't, you're just shilling to make AMD's crap relevant when it's just crap for general and normal work 99.99% people do.
>>
>>61887621
Then why does Intel make 6 core i5s in next generation?

Wendell on level1tech on YouTube tests everything on Linux and it's VM capabilities. Like looking at iommu groupings on motherboards. He has long videos showing how to set up what you are describing on ryzen and Intel systems

Is a AMD shill through and through, his videos are completely compromised and aren't objective, they're filled with bias.
On top of that he's a pseudo intellectual fat fuck.

He used and still uses an Intel, albeit an older one, on all his personal machines but there is no denying ryzen is owning Intels new line for WORKSTATION-like loads. You know, the type of work his channel focuses on: compiling, rendering, and hosting virtual machines

OP here, damn that was a quick thread de-rail. Is it that hard to resist the bait?

My current machine is an 8-year old shitbox:
>Some Intel lga1156 motherboard
>i5-750
>freebie Quadro 4000 from work that replaced a GTS 240
>Maxed out at 16GB RAM
>Barely have hard-drive space left

New build, parts currently in transit:
>MSI X399 mobo
>Threadripper 1950x
>2x 1070 FE
>32GB RAM
>1200W PSU
>Re-using Samsung 850 SSD from current machine
>1TB HDD

I do 3D, so it will be nice to finally have a machine that's as good or better than what we have at work. The machine will be a workstation/render-node. It will be used for:

>Houdini
>CPU and GPU rendering with Mantra and Redshift respectively
>Zbrush
>UE4
>A bit of Adobe stuff like After Effects/Illustrator/Premiere/Photoshop

32GB is the absolute minimum for a 3D workstation IMO, but the budget...
I will eventually max out the RAM, add two more GPUs, an M.2 and more storage.
Pic is the most recent workstation they built at work.

I might have a chance to get an used x99 mobo with a 5820k, might be a nice upgrade from 3770k. Should I go for it or save up for ryzen/x299? I considered a 1920x but I have no use for 12 cores.
>>
>>61888423
Ryzen completly obliterated the need of X99. It's literally pointless by now.
Even if you want to do hackintosh you better going to Ryzen than X99.
>>
>>61888423
Do you need HEDT features? X399/X299 will be way more expensive as a whole than used X99 gear, but AM4/Z270 might be more worthwhile upgrade if you don't need tons of cores, lots of PCIe lanes or more than 64GB of RAM.
>>
>>61888568
>AM4/Z270
Can't use 32GB DIMMs?
>>
>>61888058
vs. what? the average AMD shill on /g/ that bought Ryzen only to dedicate a thread per tab to advertise and seek validation for their purchase?

I bet most of the manchildren on /g/ who shill AMD don't even own a Zen chip.
>>
Holy shit guys, just fucking ignore the bait. stop being so fucking autistic. HEDTG might actually be a good thread and you fags are letting yourselves be baited by a UMA DELICIA
>>
>>61888630
There's nothing to discuss, Threadripper has no competition in HEDT space.
>>
>>61887800
Yeah, I've seen his video, but it highlights that there is an NPT issue with AMD (been present since Bulldozer apparently) and so it's not yet a perfect thing. There are work arounds, but hopefully now AMD has a competitive product, they will work on improving the situation.

But I could still teeter towards an Intel system for it. Especially as integrated GPU means no need for two GPUs.
>>
>>61888587
Not to my knowledge. At least I've never heard of anyone putting more than 64GB into the mainstream platforms.
>>
>>61888568
I might find a use for PCI passthrough with that 5820k. It's just that a friend of mine is upgrading and is getting rid of x99 stuff. While AM4 might be good investment (if it's going to be compatible with zen2, that is) I'd prefer to avoid Z270 (even though it supports the iGPU for linups while I'd passthrough the big boy GPU to the guest OS), especially that the upcoming coffee lake meme is rumoured to not be compatible with it. how did that go, "a socket a year keeps the goyim in fear"?
>>
>>61888652
The I9s are going to get buttfucked in heat, but they will most likely beat the 1950x for the 16 and 18 core variants. Mind you, the thermal throttling might be bad
>>
I have a 1700x.
I use it for games, multitasking, VMs and video editing.

Would have been considered HEDT before march.
>>
>>61888699

I have to say I'm really curious how Intel will handle the heat output and what the minimum cooling requirements will be for those chips. I forget what the base clocks on the Xeon 18-core parts are, but I don't think it was anywhere near high enough to best the 1950x in Cinebench.

I think the 7980xe will for sure top it, but man, it's going to be spicy.

>>61887340
>>
>>61888861
The 7980XE will run at boost for 9 seconds and throttle back to lower clocks, which is more than enough to top 'bursty' benchmarks like cinnebench and common blender scenes
>>
>>61887340
My current system is a trash compactor that's good enough for general modeling and texturing work, but I'm at the point where newer versions of many programs simply refuse to run and upgrading doesn't make much sense without replacing everything at once.
I'm thinking of finally splurging for a 1950x-based system with 32GB RAM and a 1080Ti to start, and building out from there. Was considering an X99 system for the longest time, but can't really argue with that 3000+ CB score.
>>
>>61888699
The 18 core Macaco Lake has to keep very high clock speeds to make it worthwile. I mean if it costs 4 times a threadripper, you might as well go for an EPYC.
>>
>>61889090
18 core Macaco Lake costs as much as 7551P.
It's DOA for werkstations.
>>
>>61887621

>nobody needs more than 4 cores

TDP is not the same as power consumption. Also that chart shows total system power so even if they were the same in this case (possible given how the TDP was determined) you couldn't tell.
>>
>>61891006
Why would it cost less? doesn't the 8 core threadripper costs more than the r7s?
>>
>>61891006
Are you referring to the 7351P? It is cheaper, but it's clocked lower and the motherboard is likely to cost much more than x399.

I didn't use pcporkpickle for the final parts list, but here's the newegg order summary. Not listed are the two 1070 cards which were ordered from nvidia (a lot of hitting refresh like a tard).

The MSI board because price was right and feature-wise it looked pretty good. No idea if I made the right choice or not to be perfectly honest. RAM kit is this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104705

I actually had some 3600Mhz Trident Z sitting in my cart but then it went out-of-stock, and it looks like the above kit is now also OOS. I settled on the HyperX because it's on the QVL for the MSI board. Whenever I upgrade it will be directly to 128GB with a new kit of 8 sticks.
>>
>>61888245

Same here, but I can't afford a thread ripper system at the moment so I'll do a Ryzen 7 build that should last me until after AMD is done with their Zen architecture in 2020.

So I'm thinking a Ryzen 1700 that will be overclocked, an RX Vega56, 1tb of NVME storage, 64gb of ram, two 500gb SSD's in raid0, and two 1tb HDDs in raid 1. I'll probably get a 1200watt PSU just to future-proof my build. I haven't decided on the AIO cooler I want yet, but I think I'd like a 360mm radiator in push/pull. I really want the white tempered glass Dark Base Pro 900 case from Be Quiet but I don't think I'll be able to because of its limited availability.

And I'm hoping to get all of this for under $2700 bucks if I get it black friday but it'll require a ton of planning to make it happen.

Why is AMD the Apple of computing? Every time they come out with something new it looks great and makes me want to switch, but much like when I've switched to iPhone in the past I always get sick of it really quick. I remember years ago when the bulldozer cpu's were coming out, everyone was going on and on about how more cores are so much better "kinda like how they are today" though.

The only thing that's opposite is pricing with the comparison.
