They already did. Neither ryzen nor threadripper are particularly great chips but their price/performance ratio is just insane. Going for Intel makes barely any sense now unless all you gonna do is gaymen.

Intel will now release 6/6 core i5's and 6/12 core i7's into the mainstream. Give it another year when Zen 2 launches and I guarantee you we'll have 6/12 core i5's and 8/16 entry core i7's. Competition is always good.
