Is it possible put gpu inside thinkpad?

If i ever need a cpu upgrade i can always get a cheap one from ebay.
This laptop is gonna be my best friend for the next 10 years.

Why do any of you buy these 16:9 pieces of trash like X220 or T470 instead of a real Thinkpad like an X61 or a restored glorious T70? It's like you don't even understand why anyone wanted a Thinkpad in the first place and you're just following the maymay like cargo cultists.

Is there a way to get a 1600x900 IPS display for the T450? I really want one of these but I'd hate to go for 1080p if I upgrade to IPS because then I'd have to use scaling which would render Linux unusable...

Will be in the market for a new laptop soon. May wait until Black Friday but could buy now.
Not looking for a large form factor or price point if I can help it; the 11e seems to meet my needs so far. Won't be intended for games but I might find myself playing Doom in bed. A quick skim of customer reviews are mildly concerning. Any experiences with this model?
>>
>>61876344
Don't buy it, it's as simple as that. Go on ebay and find any T series or X series that costs the same as this piece of junk and I guarantee you it's going to be better in every regard.

>>
>>61876531
depends on what you do.

shitposting and anime, sure.
regular web browsing (facebook, youtube, news), pretty much
anything productive, unlikely.

Get an X series if you like that size but if it's to be your only computer buy a 24" or 27" screen for use at home.

Grabbed a T520 to give away as a gift. I've never had a Thinkpad, but I get why they're so popular. This one came with an ssd and a 1080p screen, I'm not sure I'll be able to give it up.
Also, the keyboard light is very handy and the keyboards on these are as good as advertised.

I've got a T420 with a quad i7. Should I use it for a hackintosh? I'm tired of Windows and MS tech in general, and I get annoyed at Linux for various reasons.

Is the W510 the biggest lemon of the recommended thinkpads?

I got mine a few years ago and I am happy with how it runs but trying to find a reasonably priced replacement OEM battery or 1080p screen seems impossible.

>>
>>61878949
Nevermind I posted this by accident, was looking at recommended T's and didn't see they had IPS screens
>>
>>61878963
That being said, I'm having trouble sorting out screens for the T series. I'm following the ktgee guide from OP and I want a T series with a screen that doesn't have that nasty thing where the screen changes colors significantly when you look at it from an angle. Some say TFT, some say TFT IPS, which confuses me because I thought you had to pick either or.
>>
>>61877917
No, it's next-next-next levels of easy but you'll need to get a Dell DW1510 compatible wlan card and flash a new bios for the wlan card to work.

The harder part is messing with the VM to make the bootable usb stick.

Messing around with Windows 7 on my T420. I can't get the resolution right at all. At 1600x900, everything is tiny to the point of hurting my eyes or being completely illegible. Lowering the resolution in Windows just makes everything warped and blurry. Artificially enhancing the size of everything by 25% makes everything look cartoonishly huge and some things don't fit on the screen at all.

Anything to be done about this? Is this what everyone meant when they said that these things have shit screens? The picture quality is nice to me, just can't get the size of things right.

Pic is of 100% resolution.

tried Debian, Ubuntu and Manjaro. I just wanted to find one that works, I like to make it my own anyways so it didn't really matter where I started. I also tried different DEs though I knew it shouldn't make a difference.

I might test scaling in a virtual machine on my desktop again some time soon though
>>
>>61881430
I'll inspect the hell out of it because it's used instead of refurbished. I'll install Ubuntu because there's no Windows key.
Then I'll bring it with me on a 3 day vacation and see if I like the X230's keyboard or not. Then I'll order some upgrades.
The mem/storage is low on what I bought but it has the i5 3360 rather than 3320 so I thought it'd be a neat step up without going for the i7 which were more expensive.

I plan to play some games on it, hopefully Pathologic HD and stuff. I don't know how Wine works so maybe I'll also install my old WinXP disc or find the cheapest Win7/10. I've never had a laptop before so I'm stoked. I can finally use a computer outside...

>>
>>61886373
>why are they so cheap
They aren't. New Thinkpads are as expensive as any business laptops.

The reason why people report they got them for cheap is because we generally buy old Thinkpads. Seriously, it's only natural that a 5 year old laptop is <$300. The fact that these were bought new in literal truckloads by companies makes them even cheaper. Be prepared for TN panels though.
>>
>>61886508
How lightweight? I'd say something like X220 and X230 but these are heavy compared to X1/X1C. However, the latter are junk.

I need a laptop for university. Studying software engineering. I have a powerful PC at the house, but I need something to carry around for notes, something that will serve me for the next 2.5 - 3 years.

Will run Arch Linux on it, install PyCharm, QT creator (not for heavy projects). +Some text editor for lectures. Also, size matters, screensize >= 14-Inch, and battery life should be as long as possible, SSD is a plus.

I hope I'm not asking too much, anyway here's potential buy (in used condition): Thinkpad T440.

Please help to decide. Other models/other companies will be considered. A friend of mine also recomended Dell Latitude E6430...

Anyone here have any experience with external GPU's? I've got a quad-core W520 that I was looking to Frankenstein with an eGPU.

I know they run at about 70% efficiency, but I'm more than fine just putting games on the lower(est) settings. I just want to play some newer titles like Doom and Wolfenstein 2 at 60 fps, which isn't achievable with the stock GPU.

I've also seen a few people use eGPU's without a second monitor, which I wasn't aware was possible the last time I looked into this. What would the performance difference be between my laptop's monitor, and an external one? I assume that with an external monitor I wouldn't get bottlenecked as hard, but again, I don't know much about this/

Any information/feedback is appreciated.
>>

best docking station for thinkpad t430?
>>
>>61887304
the one with the most ports. easy as that nignog
>>
>>61887326
will there ever exist a docking station with support for a gpu? that would be the shit
>>
>>61887475
I don't think they will ever add official eGPU support. Sales on their workstation level P series would drop significantly. Though the bandwidth of the docking port would probably allow for it. I don't think it has PCIe lanes though.

But like I said, they wouldn't do it. The reason why older models supported eGPU is because they needed an Expresscard slot for companies that wanted to use smartcard as authentication method. That's the most prominent use anyways.

Collecting is fun and it's always good to have backup machines. I obviously don't take them all with me wherever I go, usually just one or two depending on where I'm going.

>>61887475
There was, back in the T60 to T400 days. Lelnovo dropped it after that for some reason.
>>
>>61887326
How much are docking stations?
>>
>>61887770
Older ones (T400 for example) go for $5 - $10. Newer ones can go for up to $30. That only goes for used models of course
>>
>>61887698
thats beautiful
>>
>>61887806

If so, I think I need a thinkpad.

GPUs never, HDDs and DVD drives to some
If you want an external GPU you have to get a Thinkpad with and Expresscard slot

Can you really code efficiently with a 1366x768 resolution?

I don't want to regret my choice
>>
>>61888352
>can you really code
yes
>efficiently
no, honestly, no. But on a, let's say 14" screen, you wouldn't have that much of an advantage with 1080 because you'd have to scale the text and UI. I'd say 120ppi (1366x768 @ 12" or 1600x900 @14") is the sweet spot for laptop displays but if you want to scale anything higher goes of course.

FACT:
>when comparing screens, comparing resolution is more important than comparing aspect ratio
>the whole 16:10 vs 16:9 debate is retarded because a 1600x900 screen is better than a 1440x900 screen even if some people would consider the latter superior because of its aspect ratio.
>the only reason why the debate arose in the first place is because some of the 16:9 screens are a downgrade in terms of vertical resolution (1280x800 was replaced by 1366x768)

>>

>>
>>61889614
If you can get one for sub-€300 used MacBooks aren't a bad choice in terms of non-upgradeable laptops.
>>
>>61889635
I guess not. But I wouldn't get an s-version of any Thinkpad. Not enough power for me.
>>
>>61889546
We're probably just uninformed and buy everything. No clue. Also taxes.
>>
>>61889598
1280x1024 is 5:4, not 4:3. And 1600x1200 sure is superior.
>>
>>61889652
>I wouldn't get an s-version of any Thinkpad. Not enough power for me.

Would you care to elaborate?
>>
>>61889626
You're supposed to buy used Thinkpads from sites like ebay, craigslist and the like.

Just look for listings where the laptop doesn't look like shit and you'll be fine, everything inside is replaceable/upgradeable on these laptops.

also
>t410 in 2017
either go full freedom with c2d thinkpads or *20-*40 series
>>
>>61889679
>5:4, not 4:3
yeah yeah, my bad
>1600x1200 sure is superior
but that's my point. You can always upgrade your 16:9 or 16:10 screen to match that vertical resolution. A 1920x1200 screen wouldn't give me disadvantage in terms of vertical space while giving me a huge amount of additional horizontal space to work with
>>
>>61889728
But a 15.6" 16:9 laptop is significantly wider than a 15" 4:3 one. It's a different matter for desktop monitors, which are meant to sit on an even wider desk. A laptop sits in your lap, so unless you're terribly overweight then a squarer aspect ratio is more comfortable.
>>
>>61889816
With a 4:3 laptop like my old T40 I really have to put my knees together tightly for it not to slip down in between them. It would have to be at leat 15" to be somewhat comfortable.
>>
>>61889816
Having more space to both sides gives you more clearance on both sides to move your legs around the way you want

The internal 3 cell not included, though being able to hot swap the battery is absolutely awesome if you ask me.
But regardless of the fact that getting those runtimes out of a 6 cell is fantastic, why is there even a 48Wh option? Is this because some kind of retarded US airline policy regarding the size of batteries you're allowed to take on a plane?

Does the x230 have onboard hardware diagnostics?
>>
I bought an X220 and love it, but I use it mainly for business work (word processing, email, etc.). I'm hoping to bump up the RAM and make it faster (already have an SSD) but I'm not sure how to go about finding RAM for my particular model.

Any tips?

Get some RAM off of ebay and you're good to go.

Found a T430 Intel i5 3320m 2.6Ghz 8Gb Ram 320Gb HDD Win 7 Pro 14.1" HD that seems to be upgradable to 2 yr warranty for $315 ($380 w warranty)

Any good?

Sorry that's $315 AUD

how much is that in USD? Feels a bit over priced.

247.75 US Dollar

Also should I bother with warranties? Aren't these things easy to self repair and replace with new parts?

No it's not affected by, by the Nvidia lockout, or no you don't just use expresscards?

Still, with all this uncertainty with using a Nvidia eGPU, wouldn't it be better to just use an AMD one? Or are they somehow worse for eGPU setups?

Egpu io says they're worse with less bandwidth compared to Nvidia
Personally my 1050ti just werks with the exception of a few Lenovo quirks like
>you can't hotplug until the laptop adjusts itself in post (then you can't hotplug with the display already plugged it)
>you can't boot with the display already connected
Though that's due to Lenovo not due to Nvidia
>>
>>61902206
There are two types of connectors for the chargers for thinkpads
The barrel connector
And the flat one
They're compatible with themselves but you have to pay attention to wattage

>you can't hotplug until the laptop adjusts itself in post (then you can't hotplug with the display already plugged it)
>you can't boot with the display already connected
Can you elaborate on these? Does this mean you can't have something in the express card slot when you turn the thinkpad on? You have to plug it in shortly after it turns itself on?

Also what "adapter" do you have? The EXP GDC Beast is on sale, and with shipping included (which would get to Canada in 7 days), it's less than half the price of a PE4C-EC060A V3.0. I'm pretty tempted to go with that one unless there's a massive glaring issue I'm not aware of.

Help me pick Thinkpad:

My HP Pavilion g6 from forever ago is fucked and I am looking to buy a new laptop. What I want:
>Enough power to play games like Rimworld when my gf is using my desktop to play sims/do 3D work.
>Good keyboard since I will use it as my main study computer.

Currently looking at L470 and T470. The latter is around 200 euros more expensive. Should I pick the T? Or can you reccomend any other model?
>>
thinking of getting a t420 for classes. i'm a 3d student. will the t420 with the nvidia graphics adapter worth the extra money for 3d rendering?

>My HP Pavilion g6 from forever ago is fucked and I am looking to buy a new laptop.
Funny that. My HP Pavilion g6 is also fucked and that is the very same reason I am here.

According to the guides you should avoid the L series. I looked at the E470 (which is also not recommended) and it seemed a good replacement fore less than $1200.
But the hinges are shocking apparently. My spidey senses are tingling too saying "don't do it!"
>>
>>61903325
Wow! Yours also around 5-6 years old, overly plastic with radeon graphics?

Yeah, I have also looked at the E470, feeling the same after some reading. Will prob get the T470 in the end since it feels most worth it.
>>
>>61903414
Both are just outside of my budget.

So I might try to score a cheaper W530. Only issue is that they're 700AUD for me.
It's expensive, but even the guide thinks that's around the right price. I think I'll just do it.

I just need something I can start properly using for business transactions, rather than my piece of shit that likely has viruses on it because I've had it since high school.
>>
>>61903414
And yes, my clock stopped working on mine months after I got it.
Recently the keyboard broke. Keeps glitching. Has heat issues.

I bought it for my high school tour of the US in 2011 so it brings back memories. Dreadful Laptop though.
