Arch Linux, for one.

No, it doesn't. GCC is in base-devel, not in base.
Same for pretty much any distro except source-based ones for obvious reasons.

Okay, fair. I just forget that it's not technically 'default' because the first thing I install is base-devel so I can compile all my sweet sweet AUR packages and git repos.

Windows is perfectly fine for programming. I don't know where the Linux is better for programming meme comes from.

That being said, being able of doing "apt-get source" with any package on your system is something great for learning programming. Most people skip it, but you can't be a good programmer if you don't read the source code of other people for real world applications.
>>

>Windows is perfectly fine for programming. I don't know where the Linux is better for programming meme comes from.

It comes from all the devs who hate Windows because it's bloated and spies on you. Whether or not that's true, that's the belief of many, many devs.

Also it's not Linux that's great for programming, it's Unix derivatives. (Linux, OSX).
>>
I use Linux because I genuinely find Visual Studio to be a pain, and all of the software I use for development runs on Linux. Also, Cygwin sucks and MSYS2 is barely tolerable.
>>
>>61871241
Interfacing with the OS is far more simple on GNU/Linux than on Windows.

Example:
what is the API to configure firewall on WIndows?

Windows is historically inferior to *nix when it comes to development, maybe VM langs like Oracle Java or Microsoft Java (aka c#) is a different story but when it comes to bare metal windows is a massive pain in the ass since it hides its internals away from the users. Windows is a household OS, for consumers. Not for software developers

If you need to spy on people to know what they want, your entire business model is inherently shit and deserves to fail.
Fortunately for Microsoft they can just abuse IP laws instead of actually competing in the market.

i wonder what north korea thinks of this newfound spying technique

also, why is it that the only successful forms of linux are ones that incorporate telemetry so they can make their services better? mac, android, chromeos...

Crash reports are not telemetry. Telemetry is a constant stream of info about god knows what, even if nothing is breaking.
>also, why is it that the only successful forms of linux are ones that incorporate telemetry so they can make their services better? mac, android, chromeos...
Because your definition of success is seeing how many clueless normies you can get to use it, which proves nothing in this case. If said normies don't care about their dignity, that is their problem. It has no bearing on the needs of software developers, professional or otherwise.
>>
I have to admit the Win32 API is very nice to work with.
>that backwards compatibility
>that incredible documentation
It's just generally easy to use and a pleasure to work with. I have to write cross-platform software and the Windows implementations of most things are 99% of the time the easiest/fastest to write. Of course there are some things like UNIX device files that I sorely miss under Windows, but overall Windows is much better to write real software for than other platforms.
>>
>>61874301
Oh, I confused you with some mouth-breathing fucktard implying "telemetry makes software better". Sorry.
>>
>>61874304
While you shame "normies" for their lack of care, they're shaming you for sperging over nothing.
Who wins?
No one, but at least normies leave with a product/service that actually works.
>>61874330
At least you admit to being wrong, that's a start to breaking down that autism!

>admit to being wrong

>at least normies leave with a product/service that actually works.
There are products and services that "actually work" without spying on you.

Probably because Windows encourages single-step artists who just hammer the keyboard until their debugging doesn't crash. Rather than, well I don't know, designing it properly in the first place

Well VS is terrible for anything that isn't .NET, but that's where it really shines. It's an amazing IDE for things like C#. I agree that Windows development tools suck in general, I write most stuff that isn't C# in np++ and then just use mingw-gcc on WSL to compile. DrMemory is a good Windows substitute for valgrind, though.
