What's the consensus on Oris? I don't see any posted in these threads, are they really bad or something? I ask because the Divers 65 looks really nice, and I kinda want one.
>>
>>61861971
The 65 is nice, just too much for what's essentially an ETA 2824.
>>
>>61861971
Oris is okay. Like many lower-mid Swiss brands, they charge significantly more for the same basic movements in low-end Swiss brands. But if you like the styling and decide the price works for you they're not so bad - not nearly in the same tier of price gouging as Panerai or IWC, for example.
>>
cool beans
>>
>>61861971
Oris is fairly respectable and probably best of the cheaper mid-tier Swiss watches.

>Independent
>No quartz watches or cheap shitter lines
>Original designs
>Invents new complications like depth gauges for their divers and mechanical altimeters for their professional pilot watches.
>Reasonably priced
>No pretentious, fake-y marketing where they peddle bullshit and just try to live on their former reputation like Swatch shit
>In-house movements are stunning and reasonably priced

My only concern with them is where they source shit. They have a factory but it's small and I kind of doubt they manufacture cases or bracelets themselves. Although the quality is amazing regardless of where it comes from (although I'm a watch snob and would never buy anything with a Chinese case or bracelet).
>>
>>61862355

I vote Explorer, but if you're planning on putting it on a leather strap instead of the bracelet then pick the DJ instead (but I think buying a Rolex without the bracelet is a terrible idea). They're both very nice and similar, decide if you want to lean more dressy or more rugged.

As an absolute fresh blood where do I start? So i thought about getting a seiko as my beater and everyday wear watch (haven't decided about the model yet but probably a turtle) and a dress watch also from seiko.

Seiko was my personal choice actually. Well honestly I didn't know the brand before but I admittedly I only wore fashion brand watches before so I'm glad I got to know some of the more quality brand watches.

That looks like shit and it makes the watch sit too high up off the wrist. I've thought about looking for a nice brown leather, like a rougher leather or maybe waxed or something. It's hard to find a leather strap that fits an oyster case well though, it has to be thick and look right to fill in that space between the thick lugs. It's really just designed to look good on the bracelet, bracelets are such a defining feature of Rolex.

Personally dress watches don't fit my pysique, I'm on the bulkier side and it looks like I'm wearing a toy watch from my niece

Not any time soon. I mostly like Seiko divers, maybe a spring drive Tuna or MM300 would be cool. It would be nice if the SLA017 wasn't limited edition and way overpriced. I also really like Tudor Snowflakes especially in blue, but vintage divers are obviously not good for actually getting dirty and wet.

I have big wrists too and am definitely don't have a runners body, so for me it's got to be 40mm or more. The DJ41 and OP39 are reasonably priced, I wonder if next year on the grey market/costco if you could grab one for a reasonable price.

1916_Tissot_Banana.jpg

Now that we're talking about Tossit, have you guys heard about the Banana-reissue and the story behind it?

Apparently Tissot has a Banana that was made in 1916, bought by someone in Russia, brought in for service in 1917 and then the Revolution happened. So the watch just sits there at Tissot, serviced, waiting to be picked up, for one hundred years now. So they're making a reissue now, due to the hundred year anniversary. I'm certain Swatch Tossit is going to half-ass it someway and it's going to be terrible.

Here's a pic of the original.
>>
>>61871522
And the reissue. It's every bit inferior to the hundred year old original:
>quartz
>PVD coating, which I doubt means real plated gold
>probably increased in size
>>
>>61871522
Let me guess. They'll modernize it by making it 46mm wide and 16mm thick, and they'll add a triple date function and a display back showcasing a standard grade ETA movement.

Also the TISSOT logo will be large enough to see from space.
>>
>>61871579
Oh yeah and just now I read there will be a solid gold version with a hand-winding mechanical movement. 6800CHF.
>>
>>61871579
Lol. Yeah about as tacky as I expected. At least they skipped the date. Love the fake gold, 10/10 would throw in the garbage so fast I'd miss and have to pick it up and throw it again.

1016s cost way more than 14270s and 114270s for an older watch, inferior movement, folded bracelet, and acrylic crystal. Vintage Rolex prices are out of control, it doesn't make any sense to buy one. And the 4467 is a fucking relic, good luck with that. That one you posted has been polished into a shapeless blob that vaguely resembles an oyster case.

not sure what you mean by faulty. mechanical watches require periodic servicing, were you aware of this? if you're buying a used chrono with no service history given, then you should mentally tack on the cost of a service when you consider what the watch is going to cost you. that assumes the watch is otherwise in good shape (no broken parts, corrosion, or whatever)

it really depends, even a simple manual wind can be an ass raping if you go to the wrong place. but figure on 40%-100% more cost for a chrono compared to a simpler movement, so if a manual wind costs $200 in your area to service, the chrono might be $300-400

some guys randomly charge different amounts for different brands regardless of movement though, presumably because he's had enough time to stereotype those brands and what the owners are like
>>

Just keep track of your watches variation +/- and when it starts heading out of range get it serviced. No point paying to get it serviced when it's ticking along fine imo.

Seiko 5, a marvellous and a trusty timepiece.

it depends on if you spend over $70 for one. I just found one for $20, no shame in getting that. Retards who spend $200 on them are retards.

>>61872656
i´ve also read about a seiko 007 model or something like that. How does that compare against seiko 5?

Seiko 5 if you want to go cheap at first. Does not hand wind though so is only able to be powered automatic by your movement
SARB033 or SARB035 is a bit over $300 but is the best bang per buck and is sporty yet dressy.
Hamilton Khaki is more sporty military field watch but is good entry level swiss.

The SKX007 uses the same movement as a Seiko 5, only it's a 200m dive watch that's actually suitable for professional use.

007 is better than a 5, so go for it you want to spend more.

Apparently he takes money for reviews and backstabbed the entire watch community. Anons here and that retarded yelling YouTube watch guy are the source for that and they are not exactly trust worthy.
I figure I will just watch what I want to watch who really cares about drama.
>>
>>61872674
skx is sturdier, has a very different aesthetic, and is pretty great overall. If you buy one, get it from somewhere that does returns in case you get one with a misaligned chapter ring. I really enjoy my 009. If you aren't a wristlet, you could also see if you like turtles.

I like his reviews. At first you think it's pretentious but then you realize he's just a watch guy, he loves all watches, so I'm okay with him.

Plus he got me into the SARB017, which is better than the 35 and 33.

Probably going to get rid of a few of the cheap dress watches. Maybe adding a new cocktail time.

>>61868334

My first automatic was a SRP773 turtle. My line of thought was:

>$250
>has solid horology behind the brand and the turtle itself
>4r36 movement
>hackable
>3 dimensional hour indices unlike SKX's

Worth every penny dude, get one. I'm not going to lie, mine has a lot of flaws. My day is not aligned properly with the window as it's slightly downwards and the bezel doesn't align (very common issue).

I still say it was worth every penny due in part to the 4r36 movement, it's basically running like a certified chronometer at +/- 3 seconds a day, I usually adjust it after a week and find it only off by a couple seconds. You'll find this is common with this movement.

Compared to my SARB017 with it's 6r15, it's a lot more accurate. Damn fine good watch and beater, if you watch a dress seiko look into the SARB033 and 35.

wouldn't say it looks like shit, it's different. the face is extremely glossy and it's hard to see it in the pics. moving it around makes it sparkle and I think it looks a bit more dressy while yours is more like a nomos/bauhaus and business casual kind of thing.
