I want to try macOS on a 4K 27” monitor before i buy both the monitor and the laptop.
The 5K 27" iMac is not the same so i need to test it on a 4K monitor to see how it looks natively and scaled.
Can i test this in a store? Will someone at a Best Buy store for example allow me to hookup one of their MacBook Pros to a 4K monitor to test it? Any other ideas on how to do this?

How big of a UPS do I need to keep a computer that maxes out around 750w full usage powered on for 2-5 minutes so I have time to shut it down in case of a power outage?

I live in a house that has breakers up to the newest code and they trip all the time. Normally I wouldn't particularly give that many shits but if the power goes out while I'm using my Rift I have to completely wipe and reinstall my graphics card drivers to get it to work again which is a huge pain in the ass.

I reccomend the ones that look like this and not a secondary tower. I did some research myself and found this'll last 4-5 minutes and isn't as expensive as the tower ones.
Only problem I've heard from some lady complaining that it beeps through the night because her electricity is shit. So when ever there is s spike or minor volt drop or something it beeps. The beeps are relatively loud as the are meant as an alert.
I've got the same electrical problem. What makes sudden shut down worse is that it can damage your computer Are you sure everything is correctly earthed? You've never been slightly shocked by any of your appliances?

>>
>>61862406
I think he's suprised google indexed a website by its ip instead of its domain name, afaik 8ch was removed from search results long ago.
>>
>>61862375
>The Domain Name System (DNS) is a central part of the Internet, providing a way to match names (a website you’re seeking) to numbers (the address for the website). Anything connected to the Internet - laptops, tablets, mobile phones, websites - has an Internet Protocol (IP) address made up of numbers. Your favorite website might have an IP address like 64.202.189.170, but this is obviously not easy to remember. However a domain name such as bestdomainnameever.com is something people can recognize and remember. DNS syncs up domain names with IP addresses enabling humans to use memorable domain names while computers on the Internet can use IP addresses.

its a init system like sysvinit or upstart to initialize programs at startup and hand over to a GDM or a user shell

just like how grub initializes a kernel and hands off permission to it

the reason why a lot of people are upset is because it was basically forced on to a lot of users and there were a lot of legacy servers that crashed because of lazy testing which lasted about 6 months of bugs

then systemd started to take over the task of other components in the stack like grub with systemd-boot and GDM(graphical display manger) which handles logins and initializing a window manager and optional compositor

which some might not see that as a issue and even useful a giant bloated project is very ineffecient and not the way the linux community works as a team

smaller projects focused on individual aspects of a system work much better for security/performance and direction of evolution

there has already been plenty of security issues and they failed worst at blackhat this year

If you look for the command where they compile the .c files into .o files, there should be at least one $(something) there that you could then add to:
something += "-I$(HOME)/path/to/include"

(most Makefiles I've seen elide the space after the -I and they might not resolve ~ so use the env var instead)

>>61864471
mpv with ytdl works and isn't bad.

The only line from the makefile in the section that fails to compile is this.
@$(MAKE) -C payload_stage2

The rest is just calls to mv, mkdir, cp.

This is a seriously stupid question but I recently bought a new motherboard and CPU for it, they havent arrived yet but I want to ask if there can be some problems with power supply. Right now everything seems to be connected, and all the power cords that go from power supply are used. Are there any chances that motherboard or CPU will require more power cords than my current one? What do I do if yes. Both new components are just some midrange stuff from like 2013

As long as you have the 24-pin and 4-pin power connectors plugged in, you should be fine. If your motherboard has extra power connectors, you probably won't even need to plug them in. I currently only have the 24-pin and 8-pin on my Crosshair VI plugged in, with nothing plugged into the extra 4-pin, because that's really only required for actually hardcore overclocking (dry-ice, liquid nitrogen, etc.)

You'll most likely only need the big 24-pin and small 4-pin (orange)

So I have this 16x2 lcd display for my raspberry pi (which only uses 4 pins) and I can download example code which print text and shit. All well and good.

I'm having significant difficulties getting it to display the degree symbol (just to test how displaying temperatures will look). Declaring at the top of one of these python files something about it being utf-8, it prints some weird Chinese symbol instead of the one in the source code. Pic related, it's the 1100 0010 symbol on A01. I'd like to use 1101 1111, but I have no idea how to reference it in the code.

Screen in question:

alright thanks, when I checked there seemed to be two pins going into my current motherboard so hopefully I will be fine, Cpu just takes energy from the motherboard I assume
>>
>>61865160
The 24-pin connector powers everything on the motherboard except the CPU.
The 4-pin (sometimes 8 or 8+4) connector near the CPU powers the CPU.
On some high-end motherboards, there may also be a 4/8pin at the bottom of the board, which sends extra power to the PCIe slots, if you need that.

I can't really explain it so I made a gif. In this particular example I'm clicking the spinner thumbnail which is halfway out of picture, and for some reason it loads the full picture completely out of picture, so I have to scroll up to see it, but then when I click it back to a thumbnail, it scrolls the whole page back to the original position. It started when I switched from ungoogled-chromium to regular last Chromium version. It's pretty damn annoying.

Fucking kill me god. A while back I found out about ssh, and thought 'hey, cool, i can access my laptop from my phone'. About 2 weeks ago I knew I would want to watch some videos I had on my laptop while away from home, so I set my laptop up so it could be sshd from externally. I knew this meant others could try and hack into my computer so i did some thing ( sue me can't remember its name ) so that instead of using a password, it used some id thing so that only I could access it ( though my password was fairly secure ) and the next step was to disable clear text passwords. Neat, just change a 'yes' to 'no', done and dusted. Cut forward a week, and I decided to create an unprivelliged 'guest' user for my brother (password just 'guest'). Now i couldn't get audio to work properly as the user wasn't in the wheel group or something, so I went to add guest and then found a problem. The password wasn't working. Huh, odd, but passwd guest fixed that and I then logged in to test if audio worked. Here the paranoia kicks in. I notice 'bssh.tar.gz' and a bssh directory, which would not be from my brother. So i inspect it, and find dozens of files with passwords and usernames ( presumably, example is ubuntu password ). How, though? Well, turns out i forget in my autistic rage to uncomment the fucking sshd password line. I've gone full lock down, deleting the guest directory and user and disabling sshd.
Here's where I need some actual help: guest had no root privilleges, and even then sudo requires the root password not current user password. Still, i'm paranoid enough that I want to change my user password and root password.
Questions: my home directory is encrypted, and is set to automatically decrypt when I log in as decrypt and user password are the same. If I change user password, how can I then change and update encrpytion password?
Also, just mild autism here, but should I consider just wiping and reinstalling linux?

A mechanical drive should be silent (short of the spindle motor) unless it is being directly accessed. It might be indexing or another windows process might be grinding in the background, but the best way to check is reboot to BIOS and see if it's still happening. If it is, regardless of SMART reports, the drive has a fault and may be on it's way out. If not, then yeah, something is hammering it, nose around in process explorer and see whats up.

Apparently there is:
- One partition that provides the F12 BIOS recovery

- One partition that has 'hardware diagnostics tools'

After doing that, can I safely move RECOVERY to the end of available space and extend the main partition up to that point

HP_Tools are just some useless tools to check SMART, battery and other useless information.

an hdd not booting normally isn't a huge deal. I've fixed that hundreds of times after fucking up my installs when swapping operating systems and such. But if you don't know how to do it then someone else has to do it for you and you have to determine if what you'll get is worth the price.
>>
>>61867181
I don't think they want to rip you off, but at the same time, you can probably recover stuff yourself using freeware tools. Even a Ubuntu liveCD/USB might allow you to get all the files you need, without even removing the HDD from your machine.

You pay data recovery specialists because your lost data is worth whatever they're charging, or more. I think they will only end up charging you if they're successful.

Buck/Boost converters aren't actually loud afaik, that one is passively cooled so except for a bit of coil whine you shouldn't hear it.
Also they tend to provide pretty consistent voltage (your laptop charger can probably handle it) as long as the frequencies in the solar power variation aren't direct overtones/undertones of the switching frequency of the converter.

Also the thing is $19 and has a ton of uses if you live in a van, can't really miss right

Recovery is just that, recovery partitions that include an ISO of the windows build DVD, and a compressed image of a machine snapshot. The former to rebuild recovery media, the latter to just get the machine up without any media. RE tools contains a Win PE environment to boot into when your OS is broken so you can fuck with shit as you need. HP_TOOLS contains a UEFI diagnostic utility and in some business class machines, an image of HP Vision Diagnostics, but even without this partition you still get pic related diagnostics on F2, likey what you're seeing.

I'd recommend the vision diags over the UEFI loader anyway, far more featured, but takes a lot longer to start than the full fat UEFI diags and needs a bootable device to run from.

If you got water that deep it would have shut down immediately. Also, the differing colours in the black is not water, yeah it would look like that if it was wet, I often see discolouration like that simply from the way the plastic sets in its mold.

> t. HP repair fag from above who has seen more than his fair share of water immersed hardware

Start pulling hardware out to minimum config (CPU, mainboard and a single stick of RAM.. I'm talking disconnect the front USB header cables, fans, the whole fucking lot) and see if it fires up. If not, try one of the other sticks of RAM. If it fires up without needing to swap the RAM, start adding hardware till it dies, bam, there's your dead component. If it still failed with nothing but the RAM, it's your board, CPU or power supply. Your local PC shill might be able to help you out testing each part individually, but that will be your next step.

I may have done a stupid thing.

Put this ram stick inside my thinkpad T500 thinking it would work, it didn't, I put my old ones back and now my laptop won't even turn on. Did I break my shit just by putting in the wrong ram? Pretty sure I inserted it correctly. Will post next picture.

AM3.
Initially:
>PC sometimes wouldn't boot
>holding the start button would turn it off
>taking RAM out would make it beep
>after a few times turning it on and off, it would boot without issues
After that:
>sometimes it wouldn't turn off by holding he power button
>on these occasions, taking the RAM out wouldn't make it beep
>on these occasions, most of the time, the PC would make less noise
>sometimes it would be just like I described before, it would beep and I could turn it off with the power button
>eventually, I could turn it on
>most of the time, when booting for the first time after the dang thing refusing to work, a message on the screen would appear saying “over clocking failed, press f1 to run setup” and “new CPU installed”, along with a single bleep.
>once, a single bleep played without any display on the monitor (although looking back it is possible that I simply had the monitor off in that instance)
>it got progressively worse
I replaced my old PSU which I thought was the issue, but it changed nothing. Recently I haven't even had one of those instances when I can turn it off with the power button.

I disconnected the GPU, all external cables and the HDD, and the heatsink fan for some reason made a huge amount of noise. Stopped doing that when I plugged the HDD back in.

electric compatibility *should* be ensured by pin-/socket-compatibility. meaning if the ram fits into the socket, it isnt guaranteed to work but atleast guaranteed to not damage itself or the board. maybe you broke something on the socket while removing/inserting the ram?

Couldn't tell you, I work on business machines, but that choice comes down to what Intel supply. Easiest way to check is look up the processor in question on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_i7_microprocessors and check the socket type (or i3, i5, whatever you may be looking at)

I can't activate Windows 7 for some reason (non-legit)

I've done it hundreds of times, but now it just doesn't fucking work, I tried every activator out there but not one of them works (Slic, KMSPico, MS Toolkit, DAZ, etc)

I don't know what the fuck changed, I don't want to go back to 10 please help.

The EZ activator just says it can't install it.

It has a OEM key and it says it isn't genuine, one of the loaders complained about the key being OEM (I think the KMSpico)

I could re-install with my old copy I know works but if I can avoid that... It is Ultimate 64bit

Did you delete the old Windows 10 partitions to change the HDD from GPT to MBR?

When you are in the windows installer select all the partitions, delete them, and click format.

Windows 7 = MBR(Master boot record), which most activators can activate, which uses keys that work with all versions.
Windows 8.1, 10 = GPT(GUID partition table) which uses the KMS "exploit" to activate windows.
>>
>>61866212

Thank you, tried it, unfortunately it didn't work, though. Stripped it down to the last bits. I think I know what may have caused this.
Initially, it could have been the old shitty PSU I was using, or a dirty mobo, but since there are no screws supporting the edges of my motherboard (pic related), where my RAM slots and PSU connector slot are, me taking the RAM in and out (since I thought that was the issue at first) damaged the motherboard by bending it repeatedly to the point of wrecking it. In that case, there'd be nothing else to do but to buy another one, right? Or could it somehow be the fault of the CPU?
If a more detailed description of the issues would be useful, see >>61868118

>>61868534
That is probably the reason, I will do this, I have to re-install now anyway.

But, what do you mean delete all the partitions? Where I have Windows it is a 100GB partition from a 500GB HDD, can I just delete that one?
The other partition has plenty of data I don't want to lose.
>>
>>61868708
The problem is format all the HDD.

>Q. The loaders status says "Unsupported partition table", why is this?
>A. You're either using GPT on a UEFI motherboard or you've got a locked OEM partition. Both problems can be fixed by fully formatting your entire hard drive.

Try switching your BIOS to CSM/Legacy mode, still you will need to reinstall if you installed shady shit.
I will link you to Daz Loader once you are done.
