My Rift arrived Wednesday, after a near scare where I thought it was stolen cuz my UPS guy marked it off as delivered when it, in fact, was not.

Aside from sensors being stupid to set up and wires fucking everywhere, the experience was really, really fun. I played Superhot VR, Doom 3 and Pavlov.

Pavlov so far is my favorite, in regards to being most stable to play. I ran up on a guy who begged me not to stab him, and I stabbed him anyway. Fun times.

My biggest gripe, right now, are the wires that come from the headset. That shit will tangle you up real good, and theres really nothing you can do about it. Headsets have to be wireless for total immersion. I felt like I was Derek Zoolander because I could only turn my body a certain way to avoid the cables.

Otherwise, the touch controls? Fuckin' great. The level of immersion is just amazing. I'm holding onto the Rift until the knucks and a cheaper vive come out - then I'll also get a wireless adapter for that too.
>>
Got a used DK2.

How the fuck do I play VR porn in it? Every player is stupidly retarded and they all require additional K-Lite Codec Pack and other stuff from the year 2005.

What's the VLC equivalent for the Rift?
>>
>>61850694
sure would be nice if all of these do nothing, half finished, one off, broken, 10 minute of game play, vr games wernt ALL $30
>>
>>61851005
dude just play GTA or some other sandbox game, everything else is gimmick
>>
>>61851035
yea I would but I already got memed on by buying gta twice already for the 360 and one.
They arnt getting my money yet again, fuck rockstar.
I might source it elsewhere, but then I wouldnt have the full online.
>>
>>61850872
A wireless adapter will come out for the Rift shortly after TPCast releases their Vive version. Both versions will cost around $200-300. Would you be willing to pay that?
>>
>>61850694
This is why I like having VR threads in /v/. It gets actual responses.
>>
>>61853507
It's a crap shoot though. Sometimes it gets a lot of activity, sometimes it dies quickly with a handful of responses, and there's no way to have a constantly alive VR thread there unless someone dedicates themselves to bumping which isn't something I can do the whole day. Maybe if we all pitched in on a schedule. But that sounds like board manipulation.
>>
Does the screendoor effect and glare/godrays drive anyone else crazy?
>>
>>61853777
the glare/godray arn't as terribly noticeable for me on the Rift in-game, and the screendoor is legit negligible. I literally cannot tell it is there unless I am really, really looking for it.
>>
So, I've been out of the loop - what's the current status on the next generation of VR? Any signs of higher resolutions to get rid of screendoor effects? Wireless headsets?
>>
>>61850972
Virtual Desktop is probably the easiest for videos but might not have as many configuration options.
>>
>>61854384
Yeah, I actually ended up pirating v1.3 of Virtual Desktop, although it couldn't play 1 video out of the 2 I tried.

Still, it seems it's easier to just watch VR videos on your smartphone in a headset, huh.

>That shit will tangle you up real good

This is why I actually liked the old Vive cable vs the new one and the Rifts. It's much easier to untangle even though it was a heavier cable.

You can install addons like OpenVR Advanced Settings and Turn Signal for SteamVR that will tell you if you're too twisted. Not a solution but it helps.
>>
Got mine yesterday, played around for a day but I feel like it's been kinda a waste. After the initial wow factor I went back and played pubg with friends and had more fun overall. Gonna wait till sale is over and sell mine.
>>
>>61854484
Christ how do you tangle it that much. Even a few hours of Echo Arena I'm mostly fine if I occasionally spin around every few times it's in a loading screen to straighten the cord. Not a big deal.
>>
>>61856009
Just an exaggerated picture I found. Hasn't been that bad for me.
>>
>>61854379
nobody is working on anything headset wise

So I guess HTC is doing a sale on the Vive, except in the most retarded way possible with a raffle.

http://store.us.vive.com/store/htcus/html/pbPage.mystery-flash-sale

You can get $200 off. Only $50 if you have shit luck. Can use multiple emails.
>>
>>61850872
How about taping the cables to your back? Not ideal but would help
>>
Why do I want one of these things again? Real question here.

Me again with the used DK2.

What's strange to me is that both the calibration in the oculus runtime and the steam vr menu thingy works flawlessly, but when I enter the Steam VR Home (that house) or when I start Project Cars Pagani demo, the screen starts jittering and shaking. However I also tried some space game demo (also from Steam) and that worked just fine. What is going on? Is my PC simply not powerful enough?
>>
>>61858865
BTW what's "funny" is that I had better results with streaming to my phone with Trinus VR than a dedicated headset.

Probably also doesn't help the fact that when I play a game, it generated the image for both eyes, and also generated a monoscopic image on my PC monitor, so essentially rereading the same image three times. Wtf is this? I couldn't find an option to turn this off either.
>>
>>61858888
Don't know about what's happening with your DK2 but the monoscopic image you see is a mirror of the right eye and it does not affect performance. It is so that spectators can see what you're seeing.

the cable on the rift was a problem for the first 3 days i had it, then i attached a small hook to my ceiling tied a couple foot of cord to it and have that hold my cables up. it feels pretty much wireless now.
>>
>>61858865
Oh hey, I saw this recently and thought of you since you asked about motion controls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT0BbbSqZXM

Not sure about your performance issues. Project Cars is one of the most demanding games out there but you shouldn't have any problems in SteamVR Home.
>>
>>61850872
Using / developing VR since few years - the cable problem with either go away by accomodation or the wireless headsets will finally come.
Don't notice the cable anymore actively neither on rift nor Oculus - also consider getting a 3rd camera for proper room scale tracking. And replace the foam of the original Oculus to make the experience even better
>>
>>61851188
So far except for journalists and few other people ( of whom I know few actually) no one really tried it. So no proper large scale test how stable and reliable the tpcast will be :/
>>
>>61853777
With Oculus the god Rays are annoying in apps like bigscreen where the environment is dark. With robo reco I was busy smashing robots and did forget about the screen. The Vive with supper sampling on has an acceptable screen door effect

Was surprised how sharp the daydream looks with my s8 btw ...
>>
Gal Gun VR is amazing
>>
>>61854379
Yes. Mobile headsets are one option. Higher resolution might come with foviated rendering at some point. Tried few headsets with 5k and even though they were far from optimal overall one think I can say: a lot of pixels makes the visual fidality way better!

So far they all seem to wait for something. Pretty sure there are a lot of prototypes in basements.

However I think IMHO that they are afraid the user base with a powerful enough GPU is even less when you need to render more pixels.

What will push the screen quality at least are phones like the s8 - in gear VR and daydream the screen does definitely look better compared to oculus or Vive ( very subjective)
>>
>>61859019
That's actually pretty great, thanks anon.
>>
>>61859019
Very impressive!!! Thx for sharing
>>
>>61859295
You dont really need to render at the displays full resolution though, the screen door is caused by the physical pixels, not the resolution the software is running at. If you have something running at 1080 with decent AA and stretch it out over 5k its gonna look fantastic. I think the main reason higher density displays arent becoming a thing is the cost of the display, not the hardware to push an image to it.
>>
>>61857445
For me it's job related. Games are fun. But I am looking forward to productive apps imho
>>
>>61858988
That's actually pretty neat. Not the pic tho, that sucks.
>>
>>61858988
Shit that's badass anon, wish I could do that.
>>
>>61859342
True mostly. But it won't fix the problem with text being blurry. And neither Oculus nor Vive have such a low resolution - both have in theory 2160 x 1200. That's like 2.5 times more than Fhd right?

And the marketing outcry for having more pixels than you can use might hurt sales.

Try to explain this to a dummy :)
>>
>>61858988
>>61858988
Saw few people experimenting with dog leash systems - they extend and roll back
>>
>>61859410
Whats stopping you? I did have to go into the attic so i could screw the hook onto a proper wooden beam and drill a little hole to pass it through, my actual ceiling is garbage and would just crumble, but its an easy enough job and cords can be unhooked leaving just the hooks that are barely noticable....i tend not to bother though as id have to get a ladder...ive tried standing on my chair before and it didnt end well.
>>
>>61859342
>If you have something running at 1080 with decent AA and stretch it out over 5k its gonna look fantastic.

Ew, no. Have you actually tried this? It looks terrible. I have a 4k display.

Also super-sampling actually does help.

http://doc-ok.org/?p=1631
>>
>>61859506
I havent tried it with 4k but I did it long ago with an older machiine, I got a 1080 monitor long before i could run my games well at that res so i was running laptop res, i think 1360 by 768 or something like that with 4x AA and it looked great.
>>
>>61859506
Ok i read the first couple of paragraphs of that doc and it sounds like it makes sense, so maybe it wont work on a hmd.
>>
>>61859539
>>61859506
Try 4k to Fhd - it looks like shit. If you have a Mac book try to set it to low resolution and enjoy eye cancer
>>
>>61859414
>>61859342
Don't forget when you supper sample - you might end up with 2 physical. Pixels and like 3 virtual between. It also decrease the visual fidality. Ideal case is to render at high res with high res screen
>>
Should I pull trigger on Rift sale + third sensor, or wait like 6 months and buy a Vive?

Honest opinions please; it's a big investment
>>
>>61860117
The hardware is more similar than different so you'll be satisfied either way. The only thing is that we don't know how cheap the Vive could get. They may reduce the price more but maybe not as cheap as $400. Oculus or the retailers may also have sales or further price reductions so there's a chance it could get even cheaper by that time. No one really knows. If you're waiting 6 months, you might as well also wait to see how Microsoft's VR headsets perform for consumers as they should be out by that time. LG will also have announcements about their HMD very likely.

Personally I'd rather wait for gen 2 than buy something in 6 months.
>>
>>61860117
>>61860212

If it's a big investment consider why you would need it. If just for gaming I would wait.

However you always can get it from Amazon - test it and send back. If you want to have it afterwards - buy one

There might indeed be either cheaper Vive, better Oculus or Vive , a Vive Clone , MS Headsets ( also who knows how well they will integrate in the so far established ecosystem)

Maybe you can rent one for a month? Or buy it and if you don't like resell?
>>
>>61860312
>>61860212

Thanks guys; wise words. I got a Gear VR and got a taste of VR and just sort of got obsessed and wanted into the PC VR world, since Trinus + GearVR doesn't look that great
>>
>>61861030
Some people like to try the trinus thing, but personally I don't feel it's worth the effort. Well at least you know what Gear VR is like. The Rift/Vive are better in a lot of ways, but in some ways they might actually not be and there's always a chance you'll be disappointed by those things. At this point it might be better for you to wait for gen 2 which will almost certainly be in every way better. But gen 2 isn't coming till like 2019 according to most sources so you'll have to wait a while.
>>
>>61860117
Why 6 months? Best sale for the Vive will probably be on Black Friday. My bets are the $300 Rift will be back again on Amazon too but it'll sell out way faster.
>>
>>61859177
I'm fine with the current foam, and i bought my 3rd sensor before the oculus even arrived
>>
>>61860117
I've got a rift and have no real regrets. I had to buy a 3rd sensor (comes with a long extension cable) and an extra extension cable to get it all working, but its pretty great.

The only advantage I see Vive having over rift, right now, is far easier sensor setups.
>>
>>61850694
hows the porn?
>>
>>61859424
That sounds clever but what about the wear on the cables?
>>
You guys think they'll do gen 2 models of both headsets? I heard valve is trying to finish a wireless set for next year. Or do you think they gave up since almost no one bought a set. It really feels life Facebook/ rift has given up.

How does pirating games on the rift work? Is there an extra layer of drm in the oculus software that prevents cracked games from running?
>>
>>61864061
you can get a whole lot of cracked games on skidrow that you can add to your steamVR library and use on your rift
>>

I just don't believe in a headset that needs a battery pack on your back.

House of the Dying Sun is pretty great in vr. I wish the dev would add more content.
