What hostnames do you give your machines? Do you have a scheme

What hostnames do you give your machines? Do you have a scheme for assigning IPs to them, too, or do you just take whatever DHCP coughs up?

I'm rearranging my network this weekend and I'm curious what /g/ does.

e.g. my gaymin machine is called Dionysus, my sturdy Thinkpad is called Soteria, and my Pi is called Idaea

etc.

Cute names are nice and I use to roll that way until I had enough devices on the network along with verturalized appliances that it was just way more convenient to have descriptive names. Between me and the
wife
we probably have a dozen PCs for various uses, and I have about half a dozen VMs.

Hostnames are usually some consistent naming scheme by function / location.

Servers and network equipment have static IPs, workstations and wireless devices have DHCP.
>>
in windows my hostname is hellion, on linux its posix. the network is technically my girlfriends and she names all her shit after MLP

I name them after Earthbound locations.

Same.

My desktop for work is called Hephaestus, god of craftsmen. My laptop was Dionysus, but then the screen broke and the replacement laptop is Attis, god of rebirth and vegetative growth. I used to have a dedicated music machine called Apollo, god of music.

My overall network/domain is called olympus.

At work hostnames are managed by a naming scheme. Looking at a hostname can tell you where a device is, who is belongs to, what it's doing and what # is it if there are multiple like it. And everything is static IP in a convoluted address allocation scheme.

At home it's DHCP and no meaningful hostnames because fuck that.

This. I like to name my boxes after girls from that were airing when I bought it or when it was new.
>>
I install new systems so rarely, that every time I pick a different scheme. I have never got to more than two thematically matching hostnames.

I use different computers and robots from fiction. Currently I've got Hilly, Holly (Red Dwarf), KIPP, TARS, CASE, and Endurance (the NAS)

My VMs are named after settlements in WoW whose wallpaper they have like pic related (e.g., Xubuntu is Ratchet, Mint is Everlook, etc.).

The OS names of my physical boxes are spared this faggotry and instead have whatever edgelord name I designated the machines with when I built them. These have no uniform scheme because compies are built years apart under different predominating cultural mindsets and are not changed out of respect for the past and so as to not have to update the detailed hardware manifest logs maintained for each machine.

Autism is a hell of a drug.

my workstation is workstation.domain
dns server: ns.domain (to be changed to ns0..1, etc. as i'm planning on expanding my DNS to not just local)
ssh server exposed to public: ssh.domain
firewall (and vpn): gw.domain
laptop: laptop.domain
web: www.domain
mail: mail.domain
other services basically follow a similar pattern, note that this is at home, if i were a big business the naming scheme would be much different
