You're still better off than 99% of /g/.
>>
If you're going for your fist job out of college, having university assignments as most of your repos is fine
>>
>>61844696
Really? I was reading that it was useless and that some companies don't even consider hiring you if you have more gray areas than green ones in your Github activity table.
>>
>>61844737
Most of the time, nobody even looks at your GitHub. It's all about your whiteboarding and behavioural skills
>>
>>61844649
>He isn't designing random apps/automation scripts in his daily free time
Ur not gonna make it bruh
>>
>>61844737
Where the fuck did you read that?
Most fresh CS grads don't even have a Github unless their university has a class specifically about Github. Most employers also don't even give your Github more than a glance.

Also you can abuse the shit out of your Github activity table by creating some bullshit repo and rebasing it to rewrite history so that you have several commits every day.
>>
>>61844789
>free time
If I use my free time to program I won't do anything but programming during my whole week...

>>61844790
I read it on another tech board.
G-good to know.

How bad does sloppy code look on a Github? I have 1 repository up at the moment and it's for a quadcopter flight controller that I whipped up for a TM4C in like 6 weeks. It's poorly organized but the actual code doesn't look too bad.
>>
>>61844790
People I have talked to have told me that in their first job they had no fucking idea what git even was.

People hired them. Companies. Real people hired these people as programmers and they had no idea what version control was. All of my self-doubt went out the window when I started talking to these people.
>>
>>61844881
Nobody uses git in the real world buddy. MS and Google use perforce. Facebook uses mercurial. git is only used by people working >for free.
>>
>>61844817
Literally just spend an hour a day writing code. I've completed dozens of projects this year alone and I'm still pretty slow programming

My schedule:
>Wake up, go to school till 11
>Come home, eat lunch, relax till noon/1
>Make a couple commits on a project before I leave for my meme data analyst job at 2
>Come home, either have band practice or watch TV with my roommates before bed
>Shitpost/read as I fall asleep
>Rage out on weekends
>>
>>61844865
>Recruiters will actually spend their time going through the code on some random's repo.

They wont. You see all these HR chums going around screaming THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS HAVING A GITHUB. They don't know what they are talking about.

If you are a fresh graduate, internships and grades matter. If you have experience in the industry, that experience is all that matters to get past the initial screening.

The only time your personal projects will matter, is when you are actually in an interview with a real person, they might take a quick look at the readme and ask you about it in the interview. No one has time to read your code and then figure out whether it is good or not. It is all a fucking lie.
>>
>>61844902
The point wasn't specifically about git. It was about version control. Please get some reading comprehension. Also, "no one uses it", mentions "the big 3", k senpai.
>>
any opinions on online courses like edx bullshit, i'm considering spending on it not for the certificates but for the actual contents
>>
>>61844930
Better than nothing, but no recruiter will give a fuck about it. It is either degree or nothing. Have you ever seen a job that said "required: edx certificate or higher".
>>
>>61844649
Not a single person will sift through and check the repos of every single one applicant. As long as you have SOMETHING to talk about in a way that shows that you actually learned something, pass the whiteboard problems, and not give off the impression of an aspie, you'll be about as competent as they come.

Actually I'm an EE/CompE double major and I'm looking for an internship right fucking now. The over-competition in the bay area is fucking ridiculous dude. I don't know many people in the industry so I'm effectively fucked because that's how literally everyone gets a job now.
>>
>>61844955
No, everyone gets a job by getting a recruiter. "Making connections" is the biggest fucking meme in the industry.
>>
>>61844974
Bull fucking shit anon. My girlfriends friend got an interview at both Google and Facebook by knowing someone that works there. And how do I go about getting a recruiter? I've applied to about 15 internships this summer, and while some were for Fall/Spring semester, I haven't heard much. People have been looking at me LinkedIn though, which I guess is a good sign. Then again, those could just be my clients curious about me.

You can just bullshit your way into a job pretty easily if you can do the white board problems or even if you're just likable and personable with the interviewees. Online repos might come into play if you're interviewing for Microsoft, I guess, but I have zero online programming presence and don't do side projects and have had well paid, steady work for years now.

Thanks

Have a spooky story as my token of appreciation

>>61845042
No

But I'll be back in about 45 minutes and I'll discuss it with you and share code snippets and such. What did you want to look at in particular?

Fair enough, I guess I wouldn't share my github username on 4chan either...

I had classes on Control in university (feedback control loops, PIDs, all that), but cannot remember it very well, and I think it'd help me to see actual implementations to get me started. What I wanted to do is a realistic drone simulator, that drifts when you let go of the manual controls, for a game.

i'm getting an irl degree obviously, i am afraid that all this theory i had to study over the last years will serve no purpose once i'm out looking for a job, learning more practical things like those offered there seems like a nice plus
>try to maintain good grades
>apply for TA and tutoring positions
>realize i wont get any becuase i didn't spent time sucking professor dick
>all the shit i've studying will serve no purpose since i'm not even interested in getting a masters degree
>even if i was interested i wouldn't be able to get it since i'm not part of the ebic academic circlejerk
man i fucked up hard, best thing i can do is learn something that gets me a job.

Neat. I'm actually not leaving for another 20 minutes so I'll share some stuff. Honeestly, the PID calculations were super simple. You need to use a PID loop for each axis and potentially altitude or acceleration depending on if you want it to be able to hover in place.

                    for(j = 0;j<4;j++){ //Make sure all pwm values are withing range
if(pwmInput[j] < 500){
pwmInput[j] = 500;
}
if(pwmInput[j] > 1000){
pwmInput[j] = 1000;
}
}
if(start){ //Finally, if running, set the speed of each motor to the coresponding motor
PWMPulseWidthSet(PWM0_BASE, PWM_OUT_2, ui32PWMClock / pwmInput[3]);
PWMPulseWidthSet(PWM0_BASE, PWM_OUT_3, ui32PWMClock / pwmInput[2]);
PWMPulseWidthSet(PWM0_BASE, PWM_OUT_4, ui32PWMClock / pwmInput[1]);
PWMPulseWidthSet(PWM0_BASE, PWM_OUT_5, ui32PWMClock / pwmInput[0]);
}

This is kinda shit without context but let me know if you have any questions. In your situation you can ignore the PWM stuff because you don't need to control thrust like that.

Oh, I should note that we never acheived stable flight. We got stable oscillations but encountered some hardware issues. Our frame was waaaaaaaaaay too fucking small and the center of mass was towards the back while the gyroscope was towards the front. As I was building it I found myself in a profound face palm because it was much too late to order a new frame.

You're fine. I think you're trying to get an internship a bit early though. You really won't be able to do much outside of getting coffee in a professional environment.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I better start brushing up on PID loops, and implementing something.
And yeah, I know the feeling. The real world can be so unforgiving. It's so more comfy to simulate stuff in Unity, etc.

>I think you're trying to get an internship a bit early though.
Trying to early is a great thing, just don't expect to succeed.
I tried to get an internship and go through the university career fair way before anyone was interested in me. Didn't get any biters, but I learned a lot about how the whole process works and it made me a lot less nervous and more prepared the next years when I was actually a worthwhile candidate.

Definitely go to your university's career fair and try to get internships before you have any real chance. Since you can expect failure, it's very low stress and a great learning experience.

see anon, your gf could be a fucking stain on the wall and she would still get hired there.

Nothing to do with "knowing people".
Its simply because she is a woman.

Especially google is reaching out to every woman that ever applied because of the shitstorm their in because of the memo.

Facebook is the same but to a lesser degree
