It probably only works by exploiting a bug in a specific piece of gene sequencing software. I'm really doubtful you could get a sequence that would allow you to execute code on every machine that can sequence genes.

What did you expect? Any suitably complex computer can have malicious software written for it. And what they're talking about here is using DNA molecules as a storage device that you can put whatever digital information on. Its no different from plugging in a flash drive with a virus on it.
