I think they finally realised that their cables suck and tried to "fix" it.
Their new MacBook USB-C chargers now allow you to just buy a new USB-C power cable when it breaks, instead of replacing the entire power adapter just because of the cable.

just looked up AWG 24, which seems standard size for USB cables, is UL rated for 3.5 amps. @30°C, you can get a LOT more through it until you reach the whatever 120° and the PVC burns
