WLAN for one, lately i've been blessed with a KillerNIC card. Then there is the issue of peripherals, specifically mouse drivers, or soundcard drivers(yes people still use those, moar holes).
Then there is the issue of driver suites, which would be first software problem, the next would be unstable shitty software for handling certain hardware that doesn't work or require the study of archaic resources and luck to avoid instability.
I have often experienced problems with power use on laptops, lunix sometimes eats battery and other times just forgets to enable power saving shit.

I see no reason to use KVM unless you frequently need to switch back and forth between systems. You have to resign your GPU to windows and also pass devices to the Vm in one point only to have a slight performance drop. Why? Why not just dual boot? IDK man, alternatives have pretty much always been there.

Plus, Windows is actually still pretty good for kids. Someday my future son will see his first set of tiddies through proprietary software. He'll even be able to rice with at least Cygwin or the semi-native bash client and get introduced to *NIX if he so chooses as well. He probably will, and life will go on. Such will be life.

Vidya. That's it. I just keep win 7 installed on a separate drive for vidya. Use Linux for everything else at this point. When 7 is done, maybe I'll move to 8 or 10 for vidya.

Half that list is shit that has native Linux builds, the other half is Memecrosoft Office (which is not only easily replaced by LibreOffice, but also a buggy security nightmare), and Skype (which has gotten progressively shittier since Microsoft bought it).

My PC died a while back, so I did a fresh install with Ubuntu because it was the only CD I had handy. About 2 weeks later, when trying to drag a file from my phone to my desktop, my PC froze and wouldn't boot back into linux.
Did another fresh install with Windows because that's a fucking stupid way for a pc to crash and not be able to recover from.

There are alternatives for mainstream software on Linux, some of them more capable than Windows counterparts, some lacking.

Office -> WPS Office if you need compatibility. Linux version is open source, although it's not under free license, last time I checked. Then, there is LibreOffice.
Adobe -> Krita would be the closest PS alternative, Inkscape/LO Draw for Illustrator, Scribus for InDesign, DarkTable for LightRoom.
For video editing, there are many open source editors, such as Kdenlive, as well as commercial software, such as DaVinci Resolve.
3D -> Maya runs on CentOS, but can be made to run on Debian-based distros. There is Blender. Also, there might be other commercial software that supports Linux.
Programming -> Most IDEs work on Linux, except Visual Studio.
Gamedev -> Unity has a Linux editor in beta, Unreal can be compiled for Linux.
Skype, misc messengers - many have a Linux implementations.

The real problem with Linux, though, is fragmentation and lack of user-friendliness, which scares off the normies. OMG Ubuntu mentions Linux software, but they also tell you you have to add a ppa and install software from a terminal, which many people would find "scary". OpenSUSE has one-click-install links in their repos, so there are steps in the right direction. Plus, there are snaps, flatpaks, appimages - but every format has its own flaws. Plus GTK/Qt inconsistencies, hardware problems, random packages breaking from upgrades, every DE behaving in its own way, plugins that stop working because of a new GTK version - all of this will drive away an average Joe.

Look man the fact that I can manipular folders trough an interface, move quickly trough my files, troubleshot problems by using intuition and logic trough menus / options, see all sorts of useful information in a clean way is a big for me on windows.

On linux I would have to tinker for days and in the end I might just not be satisfied with the overall package... I've actually done it in the past.

The experience is smoother on windows that's all and as human I like comfort and the easy / cheating route - I would pretty much always take it.

Honestly i've had more problems on windows than linux. Not saying linux is problem free but if i put both on a balance the linux based OS i'm using now wins by a large margin. Not needing to cope with MS's bullshit is just a plus, now i only use windows for a few programs where i don't have any other option but if i find a viable replacement i'll take it immediately.

$update-java-alternatives

My understanding was that anything graphically intensive won't be able to run at an acceptable framerate in a regular (non gpu passthrough) VM.
Is that not the case?
