If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
>>
Whats a good mobo and memory combo with 1600x? Preferably in white or silver

I was going to pull the trigger with x370 taichi and g.skill until I read asrock eol shit.
>>
Anyone with good knowledge of nvidia have an educated guess as to when volta is expected? My rx480 4gb is holding back my r7 1700 im ready to upgrade and possibly go from 1080p to 1440
>>
If I want to buy 2 x 27 " screens and I usually just use GNU/Linux, should I go for 1440p or is 4k worth it?

Right now at work, I'm using a 27" Dell screen which is capable of 4k, but I'm running it at 1440p all the time because 4k feels uncomfortable. Now on a long run, with software improving and high dpi scaling getting better, should I already buy a 4k screen?

Right now I'm using 2 x 22" Full-HD Acer screens

How much does CAS latency matter for performance with RAM? I'm having issues finding anything lower than 15, for DDR4 2400 RAM.
>>

Max budget is $1750

I really just want to play vidya games, but would also enjoy the power to run some VM's, and do linux/AI related things for college. Can the 7700k accomplish this? The goal is to not need an upgrade for a long time.

depends on the application. For gaming (the default use case in this thread) it matters very little. I'd rather have ram with a higher clock speed and worse timings than lower speed and good timings. Plus you can always try a manual tweak yourself.
>>61831085
>holding back my cpu
That's not how it works, in games at least. Volta is quite a ways off. I say dump off your 480 while it still has some value and just buy a Pascal now. Or a Vega 56 which is soon™
>>
>>61831654
Not much. In general you'll want to prioritize bandwidth over latency(especially with Ryzen), and just get the best RAM that doesn't command a huge premium.

What case and power supply would be suitable for this set up?
>>
>>61831912
what are these lines trying to convey
>>
>>61831684
I really only have nitpicks here. Ryzen would probably be better for your VM works, but i7 better for gaming. Up to you really.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KJXgM8
Here's my list of suggestions. You forgot a power supply so this is my suggestion, decently built, more than enough wattage. Cheap. The storage swap is just personal preference since Seagate's new models are pretty good.
The graphics card is because the Evga ACX 3.0 cards have an issue where, under extra circumstances, the VRMs can overheat and catch fire. They updated the cards to mitigate the problem, but I still suggest steering clear of the Evga Pascal series besides 1080ti.
Case is 99% personal preference. If you liked the other one, go with that instead.
>>
>>61831912
Seasonic prime titanium, probably. If you're going to spend all that money, you can afford it, so might as well.
>>
My dad runs a business from a laptop and external backup, and said laptop died. Stupid fucker of a thing bricked with a Windows update and I can't pull it back to an older version. He is actually awesome and per instructions has ran nightly updates so he lost zero content.

He's indicated the most intensive shit he does is Skype while reviewing access databases and excel sheets. I have some parts to use already; motherboard pushes me towards Ryzen, which is better than CrabbyCakeLake or whatever the fuck its called anyway. Feedback appreciated.

Don't have all that much cash to spare, but want to shout him this one.

> CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($245.00 @ Shopping Express)
> Motherboard: ASRock - AB350 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard (already owned)
> Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (already owned)
> Storage: ADATA - Premier SP550 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($115.98 @ Mwave Australia)
> Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($63.00 @ Shopping Express)
> Video Card: MSI - GeForce GT 710 1GB Video Card (already owned)
> Case: Corsair - Carbide 400C White ATX Mid Tower Case (already owned)
> Power Supply: be quiet! - 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (already owned)

Anything to tweak? I do have an old Gainward GTX 570 to drop in if the GT 710 is too under-powered.

So off the bat the 240GB SSD isn't going to be enough.

Factor in actual usable space, you're down to ~220GB. Throw the OS into the mix, probably 10, looking at another 10-15GB. Finally bring in the programs and you can start looking at what's left.

So what is the extra TB for then?

I'm ona 2600k with a 980Ti @ 1440p 144Hz.
This setup isn't hitting the frames I want it to, for example BF1 dips to <70 too much. Thinking of getting a 1080Ti but not sure about the CPU.
7700k seems the obvious choice but it is a lot of money and I like the idea of a Ryzen CPU but they to perform seem underwhelming for gaming, not sure if it will be a big upgrade coming from a 2600k.

I'm on a GoySync monitor btw, so Vega isn't really an option.
>>
Is there any noticable difference in going from a HD7850 to a RX460 or do I have to get a 970 or 1060 or something since the 570 and 580 are nowhere to be found?

>>
>>61834682
you can do those first two things with just about any fucking processor
and the third is within easy reach if you take said processor and strap a 1050 Ti to it
>>
>>61834608
It's a pretty tricky situation regarding GPUs, the 1050 Ti handles most games at 1080p60 but you have to lower the settings in some games so it probably won't age that well. I would probably either get a cheaper card like a 1050 or 560 now and sell it and upgrade later when the GPU market isn't so fucked or try and find something like a GTX 970 used. You could also drop down to a Ryzen 5 1400 to save some money if you mainly care about games and don't do much CPU intensive tasks outside of it.
>>
>>61834682
Yes. In fact for "office tier work" and browsing the fast dual core will beat the pants off a slow quad core.

Then we get into gaming. Most games are not currently optimized for quad core, and the ones that are will want a better clock than i5 can give. I say yes a dual core will be fine for now playing most games. And if not pay the extra $80 for an i7.

is this bait? unless you're running some beast of a gpu like a furyx or even the older 290x/390x gpu's with a fuckload of idling stream processors there will be minor performance gains on some shitty low tier gpu like the 560 no matter how much you want to delude yourself. there is no argument for aging better when these gpu already struggle as it is in 9/10 modern games.

as more the vram the 560 isn't powerful enough to take advantage of that full 4gb vram unless its solely used for texture settings alone, but that doesn't justify the massive price hike over the 1050 2gb or even the 560 2gb.

It's an 18 dollar difference between the 560 2GB and 4GB in my local store and the 1050 costs the same or 6 bucks less depending on the model, so why would I not go for the 4GB card?

when did i admit anything? i asked for 10 cases where there are issues. what am i supposed to ask for? 30? i know that would be a more realistic representation due to the hundreds of AAA modern titles in the last ~5 years but that's simply too much to ask hence why i asked for 10 only. if you can't even provide that minuscule amount (in comparison to the amount of AAA modern games within the last ~5 years) then you just got blown the fuck out with no facts to back up your implications of the 3gb being a limiting factor for games.

maybe you should try reading properly before you sperg out. if you're playing something at 4k ultra settings, yeah obviously there will be issues but that's not the target experience of someone on a budget who wants that cheaper 1060. at 1080p there won't be any issues as far as i've seen and it's up to you to comprehensively prove that this card is 100% useless for any form of gaming due to it's vram as you're clearly trying to imply.

also 10 games is piss easy to find as youtube exists. it doesn't take much to find gameplay vids of scenarios if there are even any at realistic usage settings.
>>
>>61835265
you mean external gpu? it works just fine on 10 series gpu's. using those external setups is shit and never recommended anyway as it causes latency and you get decreased performance with any egpu over having that same gpu connected straight to your pc (or in your laptop if there is an option). jayztwocents did a video on it some months back with his 1080 and 1060.

Well. Haswell is not significantly slower than Skylake, that's true. And it'll look pretty good if you look at average framerates. But it's a rather low-clocked quadcore without SMT, which will lead to low minimum framerates and some (relatively minor) stuttering in many newer titles.

Also depends on the resolution, if you're planning to play at 1440p or higher, then fair enough, the 1080 isn't a bad idea. But at 1080p it would be overkill.

Are both sticks in a RAM kit equal? As in, I need to put them in specific slots for them to work, but as long as I put them in correct slots it doesn't matter which is which?

Also, I think I put my cooler the wrong way, there's no way for the cord to go around it, but I don't really want to unscrew it for now. I also screwed it improperly, I think, by tightening the side screws too much instead of slowly tightening all the screws in an order. 2K as a resolution is 1080p. Sadly there are no good 1080p monitors. And 1440p monitors are only worse. And 2160p monitors worse still.

The monitor industry has inherent production flaws it can't manage to figure out, and as things ramp up it's just going to get worse.

Expect "50-60 defective pixels" to be an acceptable panel once 4K comes around hard.

XB271HU is one of better ones IIRC, still you'll be playing a lottery with backlight bleed and dead pixels and such. If you already own an acceptable monitor, you might as well do that, just make sure you can return it if you don't like it before buying. Oh, and IPS panels have that quirk called "IPS glow", it's normal for an IPS to, some have more of it, some less, it can be quite distracting. Again, if you can return the monitor, should not be a problem.
>>
>>61837876
Anecdotally I heard the 1440p IPS panels are dogshit.

By experience, I've bought 2 1080p IPS monitors and each had a dead pixel fresh out of the box.

The monitor sellers still have policies where they consider up to like 7 dead pixels to be acceptable quality standards for PC monitors.

Basically, the tech industry is a fucking joke. Monitors are one of the best examples. Brand names you may have felt held some measure of gravity or guarantee of quality in the past no longer mean anything.
>>
>>61838013
Basically, I'm saying buying a $60 monitor is a totally legit strategy, because at least you can return it to Walmart and it has a chance of coming with a funny letter from someone in China talking about how hungry they are.

I know this is /pcbg/ for build computers, and I already have a kick ass PC. However I'm looking to get pic related. A Chromebox for average use. Something I can keep on all the time and have it sip at power compared to my 1700X/980ti computer.

However my question is will the "Intel HD" support 1440p? My main monitor is a 32" 2560x1440p. I just want a cheap tiny box that can stream 1080p video and browse the web. I already have a chromebook and love it, so getting used to the OS is nothing. Please help.

Shit, I think I've gotten some thermal paste on my CPU pins when removing it. They seem to shine somewhat differently, they aren't bent though. Should I get some cleaning liquid and apply it just to be sure?

What's the best GPU on the market for around ÂŁ200? In terms of buying power it's about equivalent to $200. Considering spending a bit more for an RX480 (ÂŁ250 here, $300).

Mainly used for CS:GO with some higher end games like Civ, etc.

well i'd pick a motherboard with 4 dimm slots. the cheapest one is only 10$ less than asrock ab350m pro4 (matx version), so even if you don't want to overclock now it would be a better investment in terms of future upgradeability.
ryzen benefits heavily from faster ram, so choose 3000mhz+, preferebly from mobo's QVL, so you have higher chances of hitting advertised speed.

Miners have fucked up the GPU market at the moment.
You can't get mid-range graphics cards anywhere, and when you find them, they're overpriced.
My advice: go to ibuypower and build a PC with a Ryzen 5 1600 or a Ryzen 7 1700 processor. Look at wither an AMD RX 580 graphics card or a 6GB nvidia GTX 1060 card.
Go for an SSD+2TB HDD combo.

Some shitty coolers come with a pad rather than paste, they are meant for low TDP components and obviously can be reused.

If you're using an NHD15 I assume you have a high power draw CPU, in which case it's dumb to just hope the paste is on there properly. Don't be lazy just reapply it.

>>
>>61843278
depends on if you want 165hz or if 60hz is fine. I think only a 1080ti can attempt to reach 165hz at 1440p. But then again it depends on the game and the settings and if you're fine with not reaching the full potential of the monitor in AAA games.

If it bothers you that much just monitor temps to make sure you aren't running a housefire and deal with it. Nah, but it sounds like the NHD15's mounting hardware is shil if you can 'miss'. Most tower coolers you attach a bracket and the plate sits ontop of the bracket high enough where it wont touch the IHS until you start screwing it on.

Really though unless you do a total retard job of it, smearing it around and 'missing' isn't going to cause any issues. You've got to remember the thing you're actually cooling underneath the IHS is barely bigger than your thumbnail, the bottom of your cooler is huge by comparison.

It's a hitachi 2TB hard drive.

you mean the head hitting the platters?

the bracket screws don't align well with the screw mounts on the cooler so the first time I missed and the shit wouldn't adjust so I had to remove it completely and remount it which is how I got to where I am now where I need to unscrew the entire thing which is installed in my mb already

I'm not worried about missing with the TIM I'm worried about missing the screws again because this time I'll be doing it inside my case instead of on a table

it would probably cost more than it's worth and maybe as much as the 165hz one. It's not necessary but it's up to you

Should that be louder than the fans and cause a subtle vibration on the table that you can feel?

put you're ear up to it

the humming/vibration is the platters spinning, most other noises are the head making contact with them to read/write data

Is there any difference in performance or thermals between the ITX and non-ITX models of the RX560? The MSI RX560 ITX 4GB is way cheaper than the non ITX models at my local store

So a straight up grinding sound is normal?

Last hard drive I used never did this.
