Will beefy exposed motherboard VRM ever come back in style? I know those i9 have been really heating up the VRMs
>>
>>61813373
They never went anywhere.
Unless you buy shit boards not meant for beefy chips or overclocking in the first place.
>>
>>61813388
But nowadays it all covered up with RGB and gamer logos

VRMs/cooling are a meme. I got a Z77 mpower and right before warranty was over, the VRM failed, frying 2 CPUs.

>They never went anywhere.
They did, my SuperMicro X9DRH-iTF only has a heat sink on one set of VRMs. The VRMs for the CPU1 have no heat sink at all. Even the 10GbE NIC has a larger heatsink than the VRMs on CPU2.

Server boards usually have a constant fresh air supply. Also most server parts are intentionally over sized and understressed to improve reliability.
>>
>>61813373
Even has one of those whiny little fans to drive you nuts.
>>
>>61813388
OP was talking about chunky functional heatsinks and those did definitely go away for a bit, the smooth-sided painted aluminium slabs with recent high end boards are nowhere near as effective at cooling. The improvements in VRM efficiency and general power use meant manufacturers could get away with it, at least until the sauna heating element that is X299 came out and they were caught with their pants down.

Why bother with the anyoing fan when they could of just placed a bigger heatsink there to be wildly more efficient

membah' when 2006/8 was ok?
>>
>>61816233
could have
>>
>>61816233
that's not how Heat Transfer works :/

Passive cooling = Working off convective flows < force air flow.
hence why Passive Cooling requires more Surface area.
>>
>>61813373
Don't all ASRock boards have this??
>>
>>61816574
Passive cooling is quieter
>>
>>61813373
This motherboard has two chipsets, and VRM portion of the heatsink is quite small

No, 2006/8 was the worst
>>
>>61816233
You would have to make the heatsink larger which means it's more likely to block something.

Why do You Type like This ?
