>>
>>61805937
I spend 800 dollars on several years of cloud service.
>>
>>61806074
You really expect me to host my DHCP server in the cloud nigga?
>>
Why does /g/ suck when it comes to something other than consumer bullshit. Bunch of fucking faggots.

A rack mount server
>>
Depends on what you want to do. But for $200 you can get an r710 which should be able to keep up with any personal project.
>>
>>61805937
a nice suit and get a job to afford a real server
>>
800 dollars doesn't give you a lot of power. I'd probably build one myself in a 2U case for that money.
Or you could get a used virtualization server for that money
>>
>>61805937
A pistol with one bullet
>>
A used supermicro 7xdbi+ or similar. Graphics some drives and be ready to go

Not buying a rack mount server but a microserver like a proliant G8...there's no point in buying a single rack mount server...

It's not personal. It's for a small 18 user environment. The load won't be high. Just AD/DHCP/DNS/FILE. I'm planning on using ESXi and and running a few 2012 R2 VMs

>>61806482
>800 dollars doesn't give you a lot of power. I'd probably build one myself in a 2U case for that money.

Yeah, I'm just looking to get my margins higher. In reality the I could probably get the customer to pay 2000 which leaves me with 1500 at for the server at most.

>>61806472
>a nice suit and get a job to afford a real server
I have a nice suit. I have a nice job. My client is looking for a smaller affordable solution you half-brained inbred.

two of these and a battery backup

Well, there are 2 rackmounted manged switches, a rackmount voip, and a rack mounted fiber converter. It wont be just a server. I'm thinking 18u should work. At the moment they just kinda got this shit laying no a desk.

Thanks Anon. I might end up using this seller. He's got some good shit at a reasonable price

Love that iDRAC
>>
>>61805937
Raspberry pi and a big bag of weed
>>
Then i'd go for a second hand complete DL360, such as:

http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/HP-ProLiant-DL360e-GEN8-G8-2-x-Six-Core-XEON-E5-2430-2-2GHz-24GB-1U-Rack-Server-/201833173598?hash=item2efe31d25e:g:HoIAAOSwXYtYuV95

or a Dell poweredge as >>61806609 suggests

The major cost will be the storage and ECC ram in addition to your barebone.
>>
>>61806766
Meant as response to >>61806616
>>
A refurbished supermicro... You can get even a dual xeon monster with 128 gigs of ram if you're lucky
>>
>>61806766
Thanks anon. I just book marked this. I have an electronics recycler in my town who has a whole bin of used ECC chips ( I figure used is fine because the client is looking for a cheaper build and ECC should take care of any small issues a used chip may have without greatly impacting the speed). I'm going to look into the storage options now. I'd most likely have to get 4x1TB 15K drives.

These are dirt. PERC6i? Socket 1366 seriously? Get this trash outta here.

This is better in every way

Thanks for the link. It looks good
>>
>>61805937
Core 2 duo and 2 gb of ram. I don't need a xeon e5
>>
>>61806561
this

ProLiant Microservers are amazing.
>>
>>
>>61806458
Why are people still spending 200 dollars on Socket 1366 bullshit in 2017? These machines were getting long in the tooth in 2016, even for residential purposes. Step up to a socket 1150 or socket 2011 rackmount server for home shit.
>>
>>61807419
Some people may still find them useful. For my server application, I needed something with a bit more horsepower, so an ivy bridge i7 works for what I need.
>>
>>61807482
>Some people may still find them useful.
You shouldn't. Socket 2011 got very affordable in 2016 and consumes far less power.
>>
>>61807510
I can see the power draw thing being a thing, especially with a file server application as you'd need a few spinning hard drives. I mean how much less power would 2011 consume vs 1366?
>>
>>61806987
no what you posted is shit.

NO CPU, NO RAM, NO HEATSINKS OR HARD DRIVES

the r710 config i posted has dual 6core and 48gb of ram for ~300 dollars. These are fantastic when used with a freenas iscsi backend for storage. for 800 I can buy 48 threads and 96gb of ram, you can buy 1 server at most. good fucking luck getting the same amount of processing power with that.
>>
$800 isn't much here in Australia for server gear.
It would either be something 1U or a couple of NUC's for virtual machines.
Power here is about $.25/kWh and with slow net, its not worth having the horsepower if you cant use it :'(

$800 would get you about 6 months of co-lo or years of virtual machines.
>>
>>61807533
At idle? It's lower, but not a huge amount. 2011 vs an equivalent 1366 system under load could be up to 45% less power consumption.
>>
>>61805937
desktop on rackmount shelf
also if this is david I'm gonna kick your ass at work tomorrow

>stores in other people's computer
>company goes bankrupt
>looses all important data
>800 dollars in trash
I'd rather spend it all on a nice server.
>>
>>61808557
What about bandwidth limitations and electrical costs?
>>
>>61808476
Well that's a good reason, especially when you take into account spinning hard drives unless you are using expensive SSDs for your server. If I could find 5TB SSDs for a price I like, I'd gladly swap out my 5TB 7200rpm drives from my Server.
>>
>>61805937
Probably whiskey, a bunch of food, and some shit server
>>
>>61808599
Internet limits you alot on how much you can upload too, ya know.
>>
>>61808689
For reference my dual socket E5-2680 workstation pulls about 300 watts from the wall under load.
>>
>>61808768
My server runs at 200W, not too shabby for a system with 4 7200RPM drives, and a 10 Gig network card. it's headless so that helps.
>>
>>61808923
If it's 1366 that has to be near idle. My dual socket X5550 system would eat over 440 watts at full load with 96GB of RAM, 4 SSDs, 4 7200RPM 2.5" HDDs, and an SFP+ HBA with fiber modules. And that's without a graphics card like my workstation.
>>
>>61808984
Mine is 1155
>>
>>61809006
Oh, yes the 1155 systems are a decent option, too. I have one doing as my main firewall. But today 1150 systems are becoming excellent deals, so for anyone else looking for a lower power server, it's the way to go (provided you can live with its limitations).
>>
>>61809043
What limitations would that be?
>>
>>61809073
32GB of RAM maximum, single socket scalability, 16 PCI-E lanes. Those are the big ones.
>>
>>61809111
Considering what my server is used for, not much of a limitation. The PCI-e slot is unused in my server.
>>
>>61805937
I would buy a rack cabinet and glue a huge dragon dildo in the middle. When people ask why the serve don't work I will tell them to go in there and sit down :^)

Hint: it isn't
