Welcome to /retro/, post about your oldschool, classic, or obsolete computers and other technology. If its old, we wanna see it.

So I got an offer on my PS/2 from last thread, 100 bucks. Take it or leave it /g/? I only got it for 10 bucks so its already a win, and its a local collector that wants it, not some fag whos gonna gut it for a sleeper.

Unless you want to fuck with it more go for it. From what you said, it will be in a good home.

Maybe someone can better explain, but why do 2000's Laptops look so ugly compared to 90's and 80's ones? Mains things that happen in the 00's was making laptop's similar which might be factor. Thoughts? Will there one day be an interest in getting them?
>>
Brought this 1988 Halikan LX-20, didn't come with power cord and the port is a DIN-5 with the male end on the laptop. So not sure how I'm going to get it working again.

Also the orginal owner fucking took the ESC off it before delivering. How can I order a new ESC in nearly the same colour as it uses standard mech keyboard switches?

Rounded features were just a trend. Look at early 2000's cars and stereo equipment. If it wasn't silver, lumpy with blue lights, it wasnt cool.

I thought it looked good back then desu. It can be hard to say if a new design becomes timeless.

Pretty good flip. I should do this more often. With 100 bucks I can empty that junk shop of retro stuff. Bet I could get a decent bit of money for that complete apple II

You may want to look into the used Cisco cards (Aironet), though I don't know how Win98 compatibility is... I have one and its an excellent card for my Win2k Thinkpad T21 being an actual business/enterprise Cisco product instead of some Linksys shit. Lots of work has been done with them, they used to be a big go-to years ago.

All PCCards with 802.11g should still have support for it
But check if the slot of your laptop is PCMCIA only, or PCCard. The former only supports really old cards

It's fairly beat up (probably due to all the stuff that was thrown on top of it in ewaste). I checked the hard drive (which still works thankfully) and there is an intact installation of Windows 98 on it, so that's something.

Suck off a hardcore collector?

I wanted one of these for my vaporwave room, the problem with those NEC machines is that they were really popular in Mori Sekei CNC machines, so the ones online are inflated industry prices for companies looking for identical replacements.
The plus side to that, if you can pay the 700-3000$ for one, they come fucking mint, full restorations are usually done by large resellers

Similar, but much newer, we have a few HAAS machines that run on SGI indys, and when the sgi finally kicked the bucket, we mailed it off to some guy and got a replacement that looked brand new. My boss said it cost 2300$
But my god, a maxed Indy in mint condition

Where Indys common during the 90's? Where they expensive? From what little I know, it sounds silly to manufacture CNC machines with obscure/uncommon hardware. I mean I guess i can understand standard controllers might not cut it for 5 axis lathes and such but still, unless that shit wasn't standardize yet in the 90's.

The HAAS machines have live 3D displays of what the machine is doing and even show indicators for tool strain and multi point laser temperature scans. Gimmicky shit, but needed a somewhat powerful machine at the time
Also, its common practice for CNC manufacturers to jew it up by loading their controllers with excessive hardware in order to make it seem more expensive. The much newer BTB machines have 2nd gen i5's and i7's, GTX 470's and 16gb of ram in them. And they literally ran XP and only needed to display a basic 2D gui that's mainly pictures and text. BTB charges nearly 15000$ for the consoles if they break out of warranty.

I was told that Fanuc likes to charge out the ass for simple g and m codes and routines which are already baked into the controller, basically the equivalent to on disc dlc.

Sure. Go nuts: http://www.ja.axxs.net/x41.htm
Also then you have to reflash the EEPROM with the same data - the password, assuming you can get an image of that eeprom for the right model
>>
>>61812421
Not really.
Either you flash a rew BIOS update image onto it externally or get a second hand dead board and hope the chips alive.
>>

Sure, but it's not the BIOS that stores the password, it's the security EEPROM that stores it.

Replacing the BIOS chip just opens a whole new world of pain without solving the original issue.

Thanks to a new charger, I was finally able to breathe some new life into this laptop. However I didn't realise at first how super low budget oriented it was. The screen has some of the worst ghosting and backlight glow I've seen, there's no ethernet port (this laptop is from the late 2000), there's space for two PC cards but only one slot has connectors, it has no hardware midi synthesizer. It's amazing the battery still works though.

What do you guys use your retro computers for?

I thought about setting an old laptop up as some kind of jukebox
>>
>>61817768
One time I used a bunch as props for a Church VBS (space theme). Rigged up a bunch of consoles with cardboard, ductape, spraypaint, and CRTs. The central piece had 3 machines running "cat /dev/random", lots of scrolling gibberish and pc speaker beeps. Another was an XT portable clone, with amber screen, repeatedly TYPEing a file of random 1s and 0s (snuck a 2 in there :3). I even jerry-rigged a video streaming setup with old laptops and a webcam (set everthing up a week before with whatever random garbage I had) so mission control could receive transmissions from a "spaceship". Kids loved it.

In general I just like dinking around with them. Pentium x86 and up gets linux since I have no nostalgia or interest in early wintel setups. Other systems I like to dig up info and original software. Portable XT has a memory monitor in ROM, so I plunk around with machine code sometimes.

Lets put it this way, taking an old IBM case from the 80's and putting a new PC inside it is a fucking sin. Even if there are no guts inside it, just the case for a ps/2 or AT XT whatever is more valuable due to a rarity and historic standpoint. And there are lots of people out there looking for these machines to restore them. But as soon as you cut holes for motherboard I/O and an atx power supply, that case is considered destroyed
There are only so many of these old machines left in the world

However, doing it in a machine that nobody gives a shit about is fun. Mid to late 90's common mass produced desktops are usually sacrilege free when you have to gut and modify them. Theres loads of them since theyre from the PC boom and since they're mass produced theyre really not special

how do you put a modern psu in these? old cases do not have the fan holes needed for modern psus and i would not want hot air from the psu into the case that already has shitty airflow because it does not have holes for case fans.
>>
>>61822910
Looks fine. Just find a PSU that doesn't have an internal intake on the top and that should work the same as the original design.
>>
>>61823286
Not the anon, but one thing you should know about modern power supplies is that not many of them have a lot of amps on the 5V rail so you have to pick one carefully.
>>
>>61823286
old style psus are hard to find and are usually only shitty chink brands that will explode or start house fires.
>>
>>61823286
I made a dual Xeon sleeper in one of those a while ago. You can use a regular modern PSU just fine, the fan will be on the bottom. Also, keep in mind you'll only be able to fit up to ~110mm tall tower coolers, and the board uses a weird mounting system based on hooks and a bracket with a single screw on the back. The hooks can be adjusted for ATX, mATX and Baby-AT.

What's a good beige ATX case to start with for a sleeper mod build? My short list is the IBM NetVista desktop case and Dell Dimension 4100.

The Dell will probably be much easier since all I probably need to do is to make the IO plate opening bigger. The IBM will require some creativity because there's no place for an exhaust fan at all, so I will probably need to do some cutting and welding. The IBM case is much nicer looking though.

My ultimate choice would be the same Packard Bell case I had when I was a kid, but that would require a substantial amount of welding etc and probably frankensteining with a donor mATX case. Problem is I can't find it for less than $200 in good condition, which is ridiculous.

Are there any other good cases to consider? Beige is a must.

im op, i didnt say retro had a timeframe, im just saying that a pentium 4 from the early 2000's really isnt at a point where its "retro" yet
everything today can still technically be done on a pentium 4 system short of the majority of modern games
my thinkpad G40 with its 2.8ghz northwood p4 in it is still perfectly capable of browsing the web, playing music, some old games and running semi modern windows smoothly. Its capable of Window 7 comfortably, but can do 8.1 and 10 if i dont mind the sluggishness
stuff newer than that is nowhere near retro, LGA 775 stuff in particular
old, yes, retro, no
also im 20 years old, that PS/2 i own in the OP post is 10 years older than i am, i recognize that what i consider retro is different than what someone older would, but that doesnt make systems from 15 years ago retro

and this is why i dont impose rules when i make the thread, all i emphasize is that we want to see old shit, not necessarily retro

As far as I know the system doesn't pass POST however the the behavior is inconsistent.

>Power On
No beeps, fan runs, nothing displayed on screen.

>First reset
Four short beeps are heard, fans run, nothing on screen

>Second reset
Sometimes 4 beeps, rarely a long beep.

It is something that I have not been able to figure out too well. At first I thought it was the video card but that seems to be in a fine condition. After researching the beeps I am not sure if it's the international clock or battery related. I did notice that the batteries in the system were from the original install more than 20 years ago, they clearly leaked but the case for the batteries were on the outside of the board and beside the PSU. I removed the batteries, checked to see if any heavy damage was done and popped in new batteries before starting it up for the first time in over a decade.

I knew the system had some issue before it was shelved indefinitely in my grandma's house, and I figured it was probably CMOS battery related or something simple.

I still want to get the system running, aside from it being my grandma's, it was my first system as well.
>>
>>61828225
Interesting, probably should start with a good clean, re-socket the memory and check all socketed chips and wires, the CMOS battery could be it though, some systems won't start up without one installed and full.

Very nice though anon. Good luck!

it depends on the desktop to me, generic whiteboxes are cool but OEM mods are just never right, especially high-end shit, there's nothing that triggers me up the wall more than people taking five-figure systems ahead of their time that you'd have to sell a kidney just to get a good look at and disgracing the shit out of them with some cheap taiwanese i3 build scraped from the bottom of the logicalincrements barrel

it's the whole system that makes it cool, not necessarily just the case, context is everything

Do NOT plug a standard ATX PSU into one of these old P2/3 Dell systems - they use non-standard wiring alongside an additional 6-pin connector for 3.3V. Either buy an adapter, or look up the pinout and make one yourself:

I'm in the North East US. I stumbled upon an article about those spy-transmission 'Numbers Stations' that are still on shortwave, and remembered I had a big desktop SW radio as a kid that I loved. I got a well-regarded one on AliExpress after getting into a google rabbit hole and I've been using http://kiwisdr.sk3w.se to surf the shortwaves in the meantime. There's actually still a shit ton of content on shortwave, and it's kind of cool since it's global and wholly analog, it's hard to censor, etc. It's still really important in the 3rd world for getting information. While local AM and FM stations are largely dead, especially outside the US, SW seems like it has a long life ahead of it. You can even send images and ASCI files over it now with the right gear. I'm listening to the news out of Japan in english right now, and I'm pretty interested in getting news from overseas without US media bullshit. There's also some wild Indian / mid-east music too. Sorry for the rambling, I've been reading about this shit for like 2 days and am pretty fascinated with it.

It's funny because specs online state it's suppose to have a Pentium III but mine has a Pentium II, never understood why.
>>
>>61836133
Damn, all this is pretty surprising to me.
>hard to censor
There used to be a counter commie underground radio here way before I was born, it was just a handful of college age kids who carried their broadcasting gear with them in backpacks and snuck up to roofs to play illegal music like the beatles and whatnot. They would do it for a bit at a time then bounce when the authorities located the signal. My mom used to sit by the radio for hours on end as a teen, waiting for them to come on so she could record some of the stuff they were playing. I've always thought that was pretty cool.
>>
>>61809946
Do not pull the battery it will brick it.
>>
>>61836268
Yeah, pirate radio is really interesting and still exists in many cities around the world to-day. South Korea and Japan both pump shortwave into North Korea in the hopes they'll reach some some N Koreans or captured Japanese citizens. North Korea actually has a jamming apparatus in place to try and stop it; but it's all about transmitter power at the end of the day. There's a lot of propaganda/govt sponsored programming on the airwaves, but a lot of independent stuff too. Tuning through the bands blindly is like analog web-surfing in a way, a unique experience at any rate.
