If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Would one of those "new" GT 1030's be a half decent card to throw in my shitbox with a Phenom II X4 965 for playing ArmA 2? I need a replacement gpu and the 1030 seems like an alright choice for only 70$.

My 1050 benched is around 6500 score while the latest benches of the 1030 max around 2700.

The only reason you'd really get such a card is for the TDP and worrying less (but not completely) about overloading your PSU.

it doesnt matter if he has a tv tuner or not, its still something people use.
it is possible to max out usb ports rather quickly. i have 10 on the back and 2 in the front, ive used all of them at some points. i can see in many cases where you could easily be using them all at once.

Got a friend who is planning on building a new PC and wants help, currently has an Athlon X3 450/R7 250 together. He's got a budget of $1000 and wants to be able to fit in a decent 1920x1080 monitor, I have an idea of what'll fit his needs, an R5 1600/GTX 1060, but is there anything else to know in terms of motherboard choice, PSU choice, etc?

for reference this is his build. His current monitor is some 4:3 a friend of his found on the side of the road

Why not start a new build with aforementioned 1600 and 1060 and see where it leads?

I don't know about the 1060's wattage but you could probably salvage the PSU.

Everything else except the HDD is scrap, and you didn't mention the case.
>>
>>61799839
I probably won't get rid of the 6770 since I can maybe stick it in the oven and get it to work but i'm just needing a cheap/decent replacement for now.

My current PC is nearly 10 years old and I've been thinking of building a new PC with Ryzen.

If anything you're getting better and cheaper going with what the the mb vendor provides you. I was looking for a wifi card and a decent one the compared to onboard wifi was averaging $40 and it ended up just making more sense/cleaner to get onboard wifi.

Like I said with the matx, you aren't losing usb ports. Only on the mitx and even then you got a ton of them. From pictures im looking at I see 8 and with usb3.1 & 3.2 header. If you're using more than that then you have a very specific setup going on that an average user who just want sli gpus for gaymin. Seriously just go look at /guts/ you rarely see anyone using more than 2 pcis at a time and /bst/ i never see anyone with more than a few things hooked up to usb. You're acting like everyone needs to have a big useless board for

USB is bad for audio because USB power is noisy, USB can run into clock issues, and you need drivers.
Some devices (some phones and laptops usually) do have decent DACs. However, a computer is a very noisy environment and thats inescapable.

It usually means that you're pushing it too far. Your motherboard detects that your PC is not starting normally and thus automagically drops the speed down to a safe value.

Have you enabled XMP? If you have, try dropping the speed down step by step.

>>61801514
That's normal, you can't run memory at 3000 MHz due to multipliers and whatnot. Everyone just rounds 2933 up because 3k is easier to prononuce.

>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff & very light gaming
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60fps very high, running most older games maxed at ~80fps
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 slightly better
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a some games; mostly the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz / 4k@60hz maxed in most games

RYZEN:
>Check your Mobo QVL for RAM kit models.
>Ryzen benefits from high RAM speeds (~3000MHz+)

GENERAL:
Always consider an SSD. HDD should always be secondary storage.
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
Some Ryzen CPUs come with good stock coolers. Consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

For Ryzen, faster memory is better. If you aren't going to be doing anything super-strenuous on this PC for a while, I suggest just getting one 8GB stick of RAM, but pick one that's faster, and compatible with your motherboard: https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B350-TOMAHAWK.html#support-mem-2

And from there, you can easily add RAM as your budget allows.

You should have RAM that advertises 3200MHz out of the box if you want the best speed/realism ratio. Just be careful about which specific model you pick as each motherboard has their own handful that they allow to reach those speeds.

Is there a "season" for buying "good" pc parts at an acceptable price?
>>

This would cost me over 2100 USD in my country...

Don't buy cheap single 120/140 rad AiO coolers.
Noctua DH15 beats pretty much all single rad AiO coolers and gets close to most dual rads, but is fuckhuge.
>>
>>61805117
probably not. We'll have to wait for a product though. And it's not like AMD won't react
>>
>>61805258
right now prices are fucked no matter what. imo the best time is 2-3 months after new gpu gen.

>>

>right now prices are fucked no matter what
why is that? because of miners or the price hikes from the companies?
>>
>>61805384
Miners are ruining GPU prices
Manufacturers are ruining SSD/RAM prices
>>
>>61805384
miners = high gpu prices
nand shortage + price fixing = high ram/ssd prices (at this point they probably won't come down).
>>
>>61805374
Hmm don't know if that applies in my country (germany) anyone tried it out last year?
>>
>>61805258
Sales come and go. Pcpartpicker has a price drop watcher for this reason.

Is there any chance of grabbing a vega 56 at launch? Or will they sell out in minutes
>>
>>61797813
You should include G4600 for iGPU builds <$350, OP. They are still useful there even with R3 here now.

Also the 1080Ti doesn't even do 60fps at 4K on medium in A LOT of games. To say it does maxed/high is misleading. That's only the case for older and/or well optimized games.

Even Doom, an extremely well optimized game, it only gets around 60fps minimum at 4K. Pretty much every game is less well optimized as Doom.

>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
Also doesn't really... mean anything. Like what game?
I know it'll do 144 minimum in like.. Overwatch and R6: Siege. Most other games it's a bit closer to 90-120fps.
At 1440p it seems to average around 70-90fps in newer titles maxed.
>>
>>61805534
AMD said the delay was to get stock up so they hopefully wouldn't sell out too fast...

I'm waiting to see how well they overclock.
If Vega 56 has unlocked HBM voltage and can clock to 1500MHz+, then it should be within 3-5% as good as Vega 64 like how an overclock Fury was compared to the Fury X.

That's insane value, where as unlike with the 1070 it sucks dick at overclocking with the voltages limited and self managed. Buildzoid has done a good video on both the problems of overclocking a 1070 and what Vega 56 being unlocked would mean.

If I can OC Vega 56 memory to Vega 64 levels... going to buy one right away for sure, as disappointing as Vega 64 was.

Thanks for your input my friend. I really don't wanna shell an extra for the "premium deal" because i already have everything basically
>>
>>61805611
that'd be just fine and dandy if people were just buying these to game with, but you know the coin miners are going to end up with most of them

i just copied OP from last thread. i really can't be bothered to make serious changes to get shit on in the next thread because people don't like it. IMO the whole idea of categorizing GPUs in [settings] [resolution] [fps] format is retarded since it all depends on a game.

I see all these self proclaimed though guys building PCs without the I/O shield, but isn't that pretty dangerous?

I mean, what else is there stopping a yanked cable from ripping out the port and damaging the motherboard?

I appreciate you going to the trouble of building me a list, but is there no cheaper option for 3200? I'd really like to take full advantage of the hardware, and the mobo /pcbg/ recommended supports 3200.

Derp, help a retarded guy out then. Where do I go up from a RX580 while staying with AMD? The cheapest Vega card I know I can get in Canada is $1200+, no way I can afford that.
