R9 290's NEVER went for $500 in fact they recently suck for Ether mining because they are extremely power hungry. You have to force the blower to 100% to cool a ref card and even then you must OC it past 1000 mhz to even touch 30mhs IF you are lucky.

I actually bought 2 ref 290's for $330 (listing included both) on ebay 1.5 months ago and it was a bad decision IMHO, sold them for a small profit.

Going rate is $200 for a reference card but some can be found lower like this one:
