So I've run in to an issue where the circuit for my room is shared with my dad's office. we both have fairly beefy rigs + window AC units installed in addition to typical shit you'd have plugged into a bedroom and office.

Very very rarely does this strain the circuit to the point of setting off the breaker, but it is becoming apparent that adding a few hundred extra watts to our circuit as it is now will cause instability. For example, I had a friend come over today with his new laptop and nintendo switch and had them both plugged in and we were gaymin away. My room 's temperature set off my AC unit and the wattage pull made everything lose power for a split second, hard shutting down my computer and generally ruining my afternoon.

A solution I thought of was splitting the circuit into two circuits down at the circuit breaker, is this a feasible solution and how would i do it? IDC if it's illegal our house is from the 1800s and the wiring is already retarded (see my story above).

I would suggest instead that, rather than toy with unknowns and stuff inside a wall that would be hard to see, why not just pull another cable from the breaker box and install some additional outlets? It's not so much a question of illegality or code violation as whether your home insurer will pay out when you've set the building on fire.

You'd need a managed switch with ports that can be placed into monitor mode and an Ethernet card that does promiscuous mode. Then you can just plug the outside interface and the modem into it and listen all you like.
A quick web search for dlink 52869
0, count:1, attempts:1Intializing UPnP
with desc_doc_url=http://10.0.0.1:52869/picsdesc.xml
ipaddress=10.0.0.1 port=52869

Possibly UPnP? You might want to sterilize that router and/or install custom firmware.

I want to get a dedicated "streaming" media device with an ethernet input for our living room. The chromecast we have at the moment is too slow and unwieldly especially when it comes to 720p+ viewing. I won't be the one using it so an easy to use UI is important.

Hey boys
So I dug up this router along with 3 inferior ones from my old man's stash of goodies. Connected it to the laptop via an ethernet cable and it doesn't seem to be working properly.
I'm pretty fucking clueless as to how routers work on the whole but I understand that they can NOT be used to connect to the world wide web?
Pic related is the router. Chrome gives me the "dns_probe_possible" error message when trying to connect. I've done all the DNS troubleshooting I can with no results (the 3rd blue light is blinking).

Is there a way to use any printer on linux? I mean, google cloud print seems like an option (but I don't wanna conspire with the botnet really).

Is a windows vm really the only way to go? Or am I missing something? I'm trying to use a canon mf217w, if that helps.

I'm not able to type certain characters into certain fields and it's pissing me off like a mother fucker. Usually it's just a minor impediment, but it's become a real consistent annoyance recently.

For example:
Randomly (as it usually is) I can't type certain characters 'g' 'c' 't', ect into a field like CS:GO's console.
OR
I can't type certain characters into fields like (ate)chan's captcha filter such as 'c' 't' 'g' and 'e', ect.
OR
This has happened randomly in other circumstances and they're all equally annoying. Sometimes I can just type the character in an unrelated field (such as a search bar) and then copy and paste or drag 'n drop it into the initial field to solve the issue, but even that isn't working in all cases. Those two examples were merely two general examples, I find the same problem in a multitude of different situations and it's really getting on my nerves.

Any help/suggestions/even insults at this point. I'll take whatever I can get.

why does noctua insist on selling their fans exclusively in poop brown? why do fanboys defend this despite the fact that many more people would consider buying their fans if they matched anything? why do these same fanboys insist that their regular fans are interchangeable with their "industrial" fans and whatever their cheaper, worse, and still ugly grey fans?

if noctua made fans that were just white and black I would get them. or they could do something cool like corsair did where you can take out the plastic ring and exchange it or even paint it yourself. I got some and they come with red, blue, and white rings, all for less than a noctua fan

FX 3800 looks to be GTS 250 territory. It's basically little faster than current-gen onboard. Basically worth $10-15 if you really need a card.
I'm not getting the 4000 at all. It looks to be a housefire Fermi (GF100 ie GTX 480/470/465), but its scores are half that of a GTX 480. DId nvidia cut it down to nothing and sell it for $1100? It scores lower than the abortion that was the GTX 465.

I'd say $15 for that. It's twice as fast as the 3800, but you can get better cards for $25-30.

If you have something better than a GTX 460/5770, don't bother with either.

I have a 2x4GB kit of ram. I've tested both sticks separately, and they both work fine on their own. Whenever I try using both together, however, it blue screens some time between "Press [key] for muh bios" and Win10 login screen. Over time, I've been getting sick of Windows, and am genuinely willing to convert over completely to some flavour of Linux. Being a newb to Linux, I was considering Ubuntu. I have some questions, for any anons with knowledge on the following.
Again, being a new to Linux as a whole (only experience was simply just setting up a Mint VM in college about 2 years ago), would Ubuntu be a good starter? I keep seeing Ubuntu & Mint being thrown around as 2 of the better starting points for Linux.
Would I still have the same problem trying to use both sticks of RAM on a Linux-based system?
Also, how well does WINE run things nowadays? I remember trying it on my Macbook ages ago to play Binding of Isaac and it ran pretty nicely, so has it gotten better within the last 4 years or so?
Lastly, does anyone have that large image of the "babbies guide to linux", or whatever it's called?
>>
>>61795826
You're using wrong slots then.
There's no general guidelines, all manufacturers have their own ways and they even differ between models.

Try all combinations even if manual explicitly says to insert into slots "1 and 2". Disregard what is says.
Just try all combinations. One will work without bluescreening.

Unless your mobo only has two slots then ram itself is probably fucked.

OS has nothing to do with it, 100% hardware problem.

>>
>>61795939
>I've used every slot combination on this, which is what's the freaky thing.
Do it again. Thoroughly.
It's a common problem and in 99% cases this is precisely the fix.
Which is why I insist you do it again, and don't skip anything even if it seems stupid, like trying slots 1 and 4, or 2 and 3.

Also make sure you're not getting any false-positives (that you never get bluescreens with just one stick).
That'd throw your testing out the window.

>>
>>61796008
Yes, depends on the audio routing setup. For instance I can output to my TV over HDMI and then use my laptop speakers.

On a desktop you might need to find an option to "unpair" your front and rear audio connectors if using those.

Also in your players set the output devices correctly instead of automatically (which uses your single "default" output device).
>>
>>61796031
I like it, makes most of my games feel smooth even though it's only running at like 50fps, instead of 144fps. I see no reason not to get freesync/g-sync at this point.
Shame it locks you into a GPU vendor though.
>>
>>61796008
Yes. It's just a matter of properly connecting all devices and selecting the right output for each audio channel.
Video is even easier to set up, OS will just treat TV as a monitor.

1. Connecting is handled by your OS (assuming you have enough input/output plugs in your mobo); just plug everything in.
2. As for selection of right outputs just get a good playback software. Most have the option, just saying some minimalist BS might not have it. I know VLC has it.
3. Done

Here's an example.

Foobar would output to the laptop's speakers, and MPC-HC would output over HDMI to a TV.

Primary Sound Driver/System default is whatever is selected in Windows' audio configuration.
>>
>>61796008
Connect the monitor using some interface like HDMI, which can support both video and audio. Connect the TV using two cables: one supporting video (it can be HDMI again) and one being a 3.5mm audio cable (the kind you use for headphones and shit). I hope your TV has an input like that. Now set your system up so that it's displaying to both screens at once, like if you had two monitors on your desk.

Open your movie player and go into its settings. Change the audio output device to your sound card/speakers/whatever it is your computer calls that headphone jack. The key is to do this from within the movie player program itself. Your system default audio needs to be set to the monitor's HDMI connection.

Now move the movie player program to the TV window, maximize and start playback. Then go back to your monitor and open your game. The game audio should come through your system's default audio device, the HDMI connection to the monitor.
>>
>>61796108
HDMI audio devices show up as different audio devices in Windows. No need for the 3.5mm really.
>>
>>61796121
Also for video playback, HDMI would be preferred for a digital signal and in some cases bitstreaming surround sound to a capable sound system.

My concern was with him using two HDMI ports on the same device, like a graphics card, and the audio not being "channeled" (for lack of a less confusing choice of word) correctly. I've had that happen before in the past. Also his only second connection might be a mobo VGA port or something which won't carry the audio stream. Spelling it out this way makes sure that he puts the TV on the inferior connection, since it's less important than getting the gaming setup right.

Corporate network blocks some ports I need to use for a week, in what way can I overcome that?
As far as I can see, all computers automatically get and set proxy settings to a HTTP proxy(port 80) which requires authentication(currently logged in user on windows).
Also, computers use Windows 7 and TNG Forefront seems to be at the front.
I've tried proxifier but can't see how do get around the port blocking.
Obviously I don't have admin privileges here, so for VPNs I can only use stuff that's native to Windows 7, so does anyone have some insight to that? What would I need to set up on my home computer to be able to connect to it via the native Windows 7 VPN features?

>I know at Amazon if you order something and later you report to them that the product got stolen or damaged, they instantly pay you the money back

That is literally the one thing I've heard of people being banned for doing. But those stories are what has made me paranoid about what other borderline scummy behavior could cause me to lose my account. Also forgot to mention, the main problem is that a piece of software does connections over a blocked port, so the solution would either be to mask it(vpn) or force it through another port that's open

Change packets' ports in your network interface to something non-blocked, make sure to do the reverse to incoming ports (unless one-way traffic); expect to receive packets on changed ports.
A simple network interface rule for incoming/outgoing packets should suffice.

If you don't have rights to do that then tough luck.
Your best bet then is middlemanning with a cheapo router somewhere along the connection and implementing the port-changing rule there.

However if ports are blocked on your interface and software has hardcoded ports then pool of viable solutions is reduced to such shit methods as disassembling said software or otherwise shitty and unfeasible ways.
In short: in case blockage is on your interface then you're fucked. Experiment with vpns because that's one area of topics my knowledge is limited in, and there *may* be a solution there.

I checked display setting and with the laptop closed, it only shows 2 monitors (the one above the laptop's screen and the tv). I switched to have the tv as the "main display" in this configuration and the taskbar now shows up on the tv. Seems like a different setup as before, but it works for the time being.

What'd I do wrong, /sqt/?

It won't boot at all, no fans spin, no lights, no nothing.

Is it harmful for a laptop/phone battery to run low? I'm getting mixed information. Some say that it's perfectly normal for it run low before charging <20% while some would say that you shouldn't let it reach 20% and don't charge it to 100% as well.
>>
>>61797256
The first thing you did wrong was not try to boot it before installing it in the case. If the mobo's faulty have fun.

Second, how are you powering it on? Are the pin jumpers set correctly? Is the switch on the back turned on?

Third, >>>/g/pcbg

try a different PSU? did it work before or is it a new built?
>>
>>61797282
Laptop batteries like most recharable batteries wear down as they decharge. Keep them charged as much as possible, so always have a laptop plugged in when possible and unplugged when turned off.
People who say it's good to drain laptop batteries and recharge them all day every day are really fucking retarded
>>
>>61797326
It's a new built.

There wasn'ta /pcbg/ thread, so I figured /sqt/ was the next best thing. I double checked that the switch was on, and it's a Corsair CXM 500w.

If I replace my motherboard, CPU and Ram do I need to do anything to my Windows install? Can I just plug my drives into the new motherboard and it'll work just fine?

So I'm moving on from 2011 and my old 2500K, but to do so I obviously have to replace my motherboard. I have all the stuff I need, but what I want to know is what do I have to be aware of before I go switching all the parts out? Will Windows still recognise it as the same computer? Will simply switching the motherboard/CPU out and plugging everything back in work immediately? Stuff like that.

>>61797844

Ok I'll have to activate the license again, but I can keep my install and all my data on my OS drive, right? No formatting/partioning required?
>>
>>61797844
>do I need to do anything
No, it should work fine (new drivers for mobo/chipset will install automatically), but oddities do happen rarely
Once it boots up, make sure to install full package of drivers for the mobo (downloadable from manufacturer's website and should also be included in mobo packaging).
What windows installs is usually just barebones fit-all or at best outdated.

One more thing of note: check if your windows license is not registered to your hardware (google how to check if windows key is oem).
Because if it is, it might say that your license is invalid once you boot up. Not sure what are the consequences though.

>>61797896
Read the second part of my reply about OEM above (this post).

Why do people say don't spread thermal paste?

Why would you want less contact?
>>
>>61798044
Seating the cooler on top of it spreads it enough.

The actual cpu is in the dead center of the chip, where most of the heat needs to be dissipated. Full coverage is not necessary and won't yield better results.
>>
>>61798044
It's a guideline for normies who don't know how thermodynamics work.
By saying so they are assuming pressure will spread the paste on its own sufficiently well.

If you know better, then this advice is not for you.
No second meaning here.

It shouldn't matter, I'd just check if maybe one of those cables is borked. It could be a motherboard issue like you suggested, I'm just saying it sounds like a PSU issue is more likely.

possibly, haven't tried it
i just extract the frames i want with ffmpeg (-f image2 frame%03d.png), then process those, less overhead when trying multiple convert options to tweak a particular input, which you probably will need to do, as things like the number of colours or fuzz value, greatly affect both gif size and quality, making a decent quality gif that isn't gigantic can be tricky
