why are there so few results? what is keeping lgbt+ people from using and talking about linux? is it because the linux community is toxic and homophobic and highly oppressive?

It is right and proper to mention the principal contribution first. The GNU contribution to the system is not only bigger than Linux and prior to Linux, we actually started the whole activity.

However, if you prefer to call the system “Linux/GNU”, that is a lot better than what people usually do, which is to omit GNU entirely and make it seem that the whole system is Linux.

When we ask people to say “GNU/Linux”, we are not dividing people. We are asking them to give the GNU Project credit for the GNU operating system. This does not criticize anyone or push anyone away.

However, there are people who do not like our saying this. Sometimes those people push us away in response. On occasion they are so rude that one wonders if they are intentionally trying to intimidate us into silence. It doesn't silence us, but it does tend to divide the community, so we hope you can convince them to stop.

However, this is only a secondary cause of division in our community. The largest division in the community is between people who appreciate free software as a social and ethical issue and consider proprietary software a social problem (supporters of the free software movement), and those who cite only practical benefits and present free software only as an efficient development model (the open source movement).

This disagreement is not just a matter of names—it is a matter of differing basic values. It is essential for the community to see and think about this disagreement. The names “free software” and “open source” are the banners of the two positions. See Why Open Source misses the point of Free Software.

The disagreement over values partially aligns with the amount of attention people pay to the GNU Project's role in our community. People who value freedom are more likely to call the system “GNU/Linux”, and people who learn that the system is “GNU/Linux” are more likely to pay attention to our philosophical arguments for freedom and community (which is why the choice of name for the system makes a real difference for society). However, the disagreement would probably exist even if everyone knew the system's real origin and its proper name, because the issue is a real one. It can only go away if we who value freedom either persuade everyone (which won't be easy) or are defeated entirely (let's hope not).

>>61783349
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

It means more then just the Linux Kernel you retard, which is why you stallkikes dont understand, you're too autistic to know what it actually references.

GPL3 differs from GPL2 in following things:

1) Patents, i.e. you can't circumvent GPL3 by using GPL software as something you build your software on, but then don't share it because while source code may be available, you patent the code. It was possible with GPL2.

2) DMCA, i.e. you can't circumvent GPL3 with using DMCA which makes circumventing DRM illegal in US. It was possible with GPL2.

3) Tivoization, i.e. you can't circumvent GPL3 using digital encryption, when you release the source code, but not the necessary cryptographic keys.

>>61788204
Anything relevent in dmesg when you exit i3 or when you start it?

Running a program as you wish is an essencial freedom and has always been part of the GPL. There's no point in showing you the source code of a (free software licensed) system, when you can modify it and run your own version, but this happens when you lock a system down with hash checks, key signs, etc. It's like embedding free software in proprietary software, showing you the code which is hidden in the proprietary binary, but you have no access to it.

There are no politics in this thread, those that use Linux, without gnu, call it Linux. If you do not like that people dont use gnu software, you can go to /fglt/ and happily join the circle jerk
>>
>>61788585
Yeah, and in many cases the only reason political fuckery has any effect is because the general population lets it.

We're just all standing around in a circle basically watching two groups go at it until the end of time for no reason at all.

Just call it something totally different and be done with it. The politics would continue on the side, but Linus does not get to decide what people call it any more than he gets to decide what people do with it. Stallman does not get to decide what people call it either.
The community is who decides what it's called.
If you have big voices insisting on fighting over it when technically neither of them has the actual right to do so, then it's up to the rest of us to decide what it's called.
>>
>>61788617

>>
>>61788651
And replace GNU libc (musl), GNU coreutils, GNU awk, GNU binutils, GNU groff, and the rest of the core GNU system
>>
Hey guys I have an idea.

Let's give both sides equal mention and call it "GNU/Linux".
>>
>>61788651
But the problem is nobody really owns it and it's a fluid OS where anything can change.

Despite the fact that the userland is infinitely more likely to be replaced than the kernel is
_hypothetically speaking_, would you actually view it as a totally different OS if the kernel were somehow replaced with something else and all the major distros also migrated to the new kernel?
Most users would just see a kernel upgrade and wouldn't even think twice. It wouldn't change their experience in almost any way

The point is neither the userland or the kernel can really be called the OS itself. It's really the community and the people maintaining it, and the distro maintainers and their goals and way of doing things and branding.

It's more than just GNU and it's more than just Linux.

Even if "Linux" wins, or "GNU", or "GNU/Linux" the FACT of the matter is that's still not an accurate representation of the OS anyway. So why the fuck are we wasting so much time fighting over it?
>>
>>61788651
That doesn't change anything.
Linux will always be just a kernel, the software combination it runs with doesn't change that.
The other distributions will always be GNU/Linux systems, since it's a combination of 2 systems, GNU and Linux.

You are asking people to give up their values, of course you are trying to divide people. Free software (as opposed to just open source) has the same goal. Hey guys, I made a license for /flt/ in order to fix the communist GPL cancer. Please rate.
"THE TRUE-FREEDOM PUBLIC LICENSE":
This program is truly free software. As long as you retain this notice
you are free to restrict the use of this program any further or close
the source entirely and hide backdoors, spyware or other malware inside.

Thoughts?

>>
>>61798022

>>61798022
Pointless. If you want "true freedom" you can just release things into the public domain. If you're claiming copyright on something and then licensing it, that automatically confers onto it a set of legal restrictions.
>>
>>61798318
You're missing the point anon. "true freedom" implies that things are free as in freedom. When you release things into the public domain, people can take those things and turn it into slavery. Thats not what you want when you aim for freedom, if you don't care if what you set free will actually be free or not, public domain, bsd, mit, wtfpl, etc is fine.
The downside is that those "permissive" licenses enable at the end more proprietary software than copyleft licenses, which have so called "restrictive" rules, making sure what you set free, will stay free.

doing my first ever gentoo install, is there any reason I would need multilib? I'm guessing that if I don't know then I probably don't need it but better safe than sorry

outdated old repos
install alpine

goddamn it, even with two concurrent threads we can't stick to the topic and keep getting tangled up in bullshit about ideology, phrasing, and politics
can we just go with something like "/fgaolrsas/ - friendly gnu and/or linux related systems and software thread" and cut the crap?
>>

Thank you for your input but I would prefer to install the distro of my choosing, for better or worse. At the end of the day the purpose of installing gentoo, for me, is more checking it off my bucket list than anything else. That being said, I will definitely put alpine on said list, as it looks as though it would also be a valuable learning experience.

Unsing Alpine myself. Feels great to be free of the GNU.

What's better for a Linus installation, Dell Xps or MacBook pro?
>>
>>61801441
best of all, you can say that you're using Linux and nobody can interject
>>
>>61801407
If I were you I would just go elsewhere for meaningful discussion. lainchan is pretty good, albeit slow, and irc generally isnt as toxic flamewar circlejerk as it is here
>>
>>61801464
That's just a nice side effect. Non-GNU distros are simply superior: no GNU bloar, no GNU-philosophy, no GNU-communism forcing your to anything.

getting rid of the GNU/OP bloat edition

So did I, and I still do. The fact of the matter is that there is just going to be a bunch of idiots screaming at eachother in these threads, you can still help the handful of people that are genuinely looking for help, but if you want be rid of the shitposting this unfortunately is not the place to stick around.

That bloat is there for a reason you stupid shit.
