How often does /g/ clean their keyboards?
>>61778048
Keyboards cost $10-15. If they are really dirty I just buy another one.
>>61778077
>using membrane kayboards
Utterly disgusting
>>61778095
They both get the job done. I'm not a millennial poser so I buy a normal keyboard without a tripple digit price just because "muh mechanical hoop jumping to make a circuit".
>>61778128
>use keyboard for literally 15 hours a day
>refuse to buy a good one
>>61778180
There's nothing wrong with a membrane keyboard. A mechanical is only more expensive.
Were I come from technology is valued on it's ability to do the job and not by it's price.
>>61778199
When you're typing all day long you want the best keyboard possible. It improves the experience, and since typing is so much of the experience, why the fuck wouldn't you want to improve it.
It's like if you spent all day driving racing cars but you would opt for the seat from a 96' VW because, you know, it's a seat, who cares.
when I change keycaps/every 3 months or so
>>61778199
Would you invest in a good chair if you spent a lot of time sitting? Yes you would.
>>61778238
But I am using the best keyboard possible.
From personal experience I (by this I mean me and only me) find myself typing faster and more accurate on simple membrane keyboards so that's what I buy.
If you have better experience typing on much more expensive keyboards than please by all means do.
>>61778313
I'm not convinced, you may just have Stockholm syndrome.
I agree mech keyboards are too expensive. But if you put it all together, a good mech will last for years. A membrane will last until it gets too filthy, as no one cleans those things anyway. Plus they're squishy, annoying, inaccurate, light, and made from cheap materials that bend and break easily.
I've typed on membranes all my life, then I bought myself a mech 3 years ago and I haven't looked back. And it's still like new as I clean it regularly. So pricing aside, the only real downside of a mech keyboard is that it's louder. Even that can be avoided with the right switches.
>>61778199
Stop projecting delusion, it's sad
>>61778394
>I agree mech keyboards are too expensive. But if you put it all together, a good mech will last for years. A membrane will last until it gets too filthy, as no one cleans those things anyway. ITT: Opinions presented as facts.
They make nice membrane keyboards fag, not everybody uses shitty computer lab Dell keyboards .
>>61778459
But you just said you buy a $15 one
Is there a good $15 keyboard I'm not aware of?
Never cleaned my mech in 4 years.
Keycap puller is coming in the mail tomorrow
Should I post the gore?
>>61778459
>shitting on Dell membranes
>when Dell membranes are one of the best membranes on the market
>>61778394
>I'm not convinced, you may just have Stockholm syndrome.
Well, let's agree to disagree then. Luckily this is all a matter of preference and no one gets hurt over other people's keyboards. I just so happen to have a preference that's also one of the cheapest eliminating the need to clean keyboards when they get really, really dirty.
>>61778504
Fine, but you're still wrong.
Out of curiosity, did you ever actually try to use a mech keyboard?
>>61778495
I'm not that guy, I just hate mechanical fags, especially you little queers who buy the keyboards that are missing 3/4 of the keys.
>>61778501
They were shit for a long time, the ones that came later were god tier though because they had MASSIVE anti-rollover.
>>61778562
Last one I used was a '90 IBM model M.
>>61778580
Watch as he tries to imply that was a bad keyboard to use even though that's literally the holy grail of mechs.
>>61778574
For the record, my mech is standard ANSI. Wouldn't want it any other way.
>>61778603
No I won't! It's a great keyboard. It's just that I'm not faster or more accurate on this thing compared to membranes.
>>61778675
I meant the guy who was trying to imply mechanicals are objectively better all the time.
He's probably going to imply that your opinion on mechanicals is meaningless because you only tried one keyboard even though it's the keyboard every mech-fag creams their panties over and should be a nearly perfect representation of the benefits of a mechanical keyboard.
>>61778048
I never actually cleaned a keyboard
>>61778095
What's a "membrane" keyboard? Why would anyone waste more than 30 bucks on a keyboard?
>>61778048
Unless you're a pig your keyboard will be clean enough for at least 2-3 years after which you can just buy a new one.
>>61778716
Membrane keyboard are just regular keyboards, you're probably using one now. They have a big rubber membrane covered in little raised domes under the keys that press down on a circuit board when you press them.
Mechanical keyboard use individual switches under each key. They're more complicated and more expensive but a lot of people prefer the way they feel and because it can be customized in both look and feel.
Most people just buy them because they're a meme now, though.
>>61778238
I don't see how buying a mechanical keyboard would "improve the experience" of typing in a way that would justify its cost. Hence I won't buy one. I also don't have a velvet seat or a desk made of mahogany or glassware made by the finest fucking craftsmen on earth.
>>61778095
>literally 0 advantage by using a memeboard
>companies making a fortune over your stupidity
>clicketyclicketyclicketyclick
The autist's way of marking his tiny territory.
>bought into the mechanical keyboard meme
>typing felt nicer but barely made any difference when typing because always bottom out keys
>cleaning them is a bitch
>don't really care that much about how they feel unless its actually dogshit
>just use a regular rubberdome keyboard because they're cheap to replace is they get FUBAR
mechs are nice but god damn they're one of the shittiest memes i ever fell for
>>61778802
>mech fags so dumb they're literally willing to pay more money for a keyboard that's 1/2 the size and is missing a good portion of keys.
>Willing to pay even more extra money for colored/rgb keycaps strictly for meme points in battlestation threads
You can't make this shit up .
>>61778752
It's not always a big rubber membrane, sometimes each individual key has its own separate piece of membrane.
My keyboard (that I've been using for 6 years) is like that. I cleaned it for the first time since I got it a month ago, it was a real pain to get back together.
>>61778788
The only way it's going to make a significant improvement in your life is if you've been using an objectively shit keyboard (which exists in both membrane and mechanical forms) or you're so cripplingly autistic that you obsess over how hard you have to press down on keys.
>>61778853
I have literally never seen that. Not that I don't believe you but it's definitely got to be a niche thing because none of the big brands I've poked around in have had that. It's always a big rubber mat with domes for each key.
>>61778696
I'm not going to do anything like that. Guy obviously likes his membranes.
>>61778853
>It's not always a big rubber membrane, sometimes each individual key has its own separate piece of membrane.
this, like laptop keyboards and topre keys
>>61778865
Probably. On the other hand I could definitely see the value in buying a decent mouse, quality switches and extra features have a much more noticeable effect.
>>61778885
>"YOUR OPINION IS WRONG!! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
>Now
>"Hey man, like what you like"
Lol the backpedaling is delicious.
>>61778923
That's because there's objective and measurable differences in mice that don't come down to purely subjective factors like how it "feels".
Mech fags actually pay more money for LESS features, that's why we laugh at them.
In all fairness, I'd make fun of somebody with a $200 mouse, too.
>>61778752
I hate mechanical keyboards. Would never go back to them.
>>61778955
It's not backpedaling you moron.
Mech keyboards are objectively better. I simply asked the dude arguing against me if he had ever used a mech before, as that solidifies his opinion. So if he still likes membranes after using the model M, then I can't argue any further.
>>61778077
>consume more goyim!

I wonder how much weed is in there
>>61778979
>Objectively
In what ways. Please list all the objective and not at all opinion based reasons a mechanical keyboard is always superior to a membrane keyboard of similar price range.
Pretty much every week since I got a mechanical keyboard. More reliable my ass.
>>61778955
There's also the fact that I've managed to break 9 cheap mice in the span that I've had a single $5 OEM rubber keyboard, which I'm typing on right now.
I could understand buying mechanical keyboards if the differences came down to any kind of perceivable difference in quality, but it's kind of like buying $60 or $6000 headphones for listening to Youtube videos. They'll both work fucking fine.
>>61779025
>similar price range
You've gotta be joking, right?
As for objective reasons:
- sturdier
- heavier and thus less likely to move around unwillingly
- more accurate keys
- better quality materials all around
- improves typing speed (marginally, but it does) and feels better on your fingers in general
- survives a whole lot longer than your typical run of the mill keyboards
- can be cleaned relatively easily
- is customizable
- features like NKRO
- can be used as a weapon
>>61779009
A lot. Unfortunately it's all sticky from the oils from your fingers and the food you ate. Plus all the other crap that's in there.
Clean it ASAP is my advice, it's disgusting.
Source: been there done that
>>61779077
>Sturdier
I said similar price range, dipshit. You can find well built membrane board.
That's -1 point.
>heavier and thus less likely to move around unwillingly
See previous point. -1
>more accurate keys
Prove it. What does "accurate" even fucking mean? Either the key press registers or it fucking doesnt, it's not like you press "Z" and the keyboard farts out a "7". -1
>- better quality materials all around
You're just making the same bad point like 5 times -1
>improves typing speed
Subjective and much too varied from person to person to count. There's just as many people who will say they saw no improvement as people who do. -1
>survives a whole lot longer than your typical run of the mill keyboards
SEE FIRST POINT. Jesus you literally are a broken record. -5 for being annoying.
>can be cleaned relatively easily
LOLOLOLOLOL THIS IS A FLAT FUCKING LIE.
A membrane keyboard is bitch easy to clean, whereas you have to remove or clean every key and switch in a mechanical individually. I have literally never seen a person say a mechanical is easier, most people agree it's harder. -2 for flat out bullshit
>- is customizable
First valid point. Not super valid since the only people who care what color their keys are are absolute homosexuals but it's still a technically true point. +1
>NKRO
Membranes have this too, dipshit. -1
> can be used as a weapon
So can a potato. -1
Your score: -13
You're probably used to failure at this point.
>>61779161
I think you may just be clinically insane.
>>61779186
Insane in the membrane, would you say?
>>61779161
not to mention if you spill some liquid on a mech while it's plugged in it'll shit out a bunch of random characters on each keypress, where on a regular membrane keyboard you spill liquid on it and it'll be fine unless it somehow got under the rubber sheet

>>61779240
>ever mentioning a specific liquid
>projecting this hard
As someone who just recently purchased their first mechanical keyboard after using membranes for over 10 years, I can say that I am not exactly impressed.
Yes the typing experience is slightly better (I am using Cherry MX Blues) the gaming experience isn't exactly that different, and overall while the quality of the mech keyboard is outstanding: no flexing on the board, very solid feeling, beautiful brushed aluminium, nice rubberized feet, nice looking (and feeling) keycaps, I really can't say that it was worth the price I paid for it.
My last membrane keyboard was a 10€ HP Rubberdome full size, it did the job very well for over six years, I can safely say I never had a problem with it, and I wouldn't have replaced it with my mech keyboard if my friends hadn't been pestering me about trying a mech keyboard for a long time.
I am sure that my mech keyboard will last me a very long time because I take very good care of all my peripherals (hence why all my keyboard and mice never break down), I am just not sure it was worth the price. And I was a bit skeptical about buying a chinese mech keyboard for 40€, I thought that if I was going to go mechanical I'd rather do it right because I can spare the money.
I've been away from home for a week now, typing on my old rubberdome on my laptop and I don't really "miss" the mechanical keyboard. Sure it is a bit better but it does not make that big of a difference.
I found the difference in "user experience" to be much more noticeable when I went from laser mice to good optical mice and from 60hz displays to 120/144hz displays.
I actually suspect a majority of people posting on mechanical keyboard threads and other such things showing off their "boards" are actually just posers with money to spare trying to get e-peen.
Pull key keys
Wash with soap and water
Rise with distilled water
Let keys dry for a day or two
Put keys back in
Compressed air, alcohol and rags for everything else.
>>61779276
what if shit get under the caps?
>>61779259
>>61779240
>Implying it even matter what liquid it is as far as damage potential
Orange juice and water both conduct electricity, the only difference the liquid makes is how hard it will be to clean your keyboard.
>>61779296
Do spill some coca cola on your keyboard and report back.
>>61779240
Don't know about mechanical ones but I've basically submerged membrane keyboards in every possible liquid short of acid at this point, they're fine once you clean and dry them out.
The only thing that could even feasibly get damaged without long-term rusting is the tiny controller chip/board, assuming you manage to short it, but they're usually encased in such a way that water can't even get to them unless you're trying.
>>61779303
It would do just as much or as little damage as water you fucking bagel. The only difference is I'd have to clean to coke better or risk sticky keys so the board would get an alcohol wash instead of just dried out.
>>61778048
hot water. it will be unusable for a day after that tho..
>>61778394
its harder to type with mechanical keyboards because the keys go deeper than on normal keyboards.
>>61779348
>It would do just as much or as little damage as water
That's false.
>>61778238
Holy shit you are so cringy
>>61779427
I once spilled coke on my brother's keyboard. It sparked and after that all the keys around the middle of the board where the spillage happened went dead.
I don't know the science behind it, but that's what happened. I spilled water on several boards and this never happened.
>>61779468
Nice anecdotal evidence there, bruh. Really convincing. Check this out though:
One time I spilled coke on my keyboard, cleaned it out, and nothing happened.
>>61779403
No, it's not. As long as you're not retarded enough to let the coke sit long enough to do any kind of corrosive damage.
It's fucking sugar water, it conducts electricity just the same as regular water, maybe even less so because sugar is a non electrolyte.
You literally don't understand how electricity works.
>>61779468
>retarded enough to spill liquids on MULTIPLE keyboards
>Expecting us to not disregard your opinion
Nope.
>>61779508
You are wrong. Phosphoric acid make Coca-Cola ionic. Ionic compounds are not good at conducting electricity in the solid state, but they do conduct electricity when dissolved in water.

dissolved compounds in water conduct electricity, the water itself is an extremely poor conductor

Just a buy a new one, faggot.
Every time I eat while sitting at the computer, I lick the keyboard clean afterwards.
Just stay on top of it, and it doesn't get a chance to get too messy.
>>61778574
I am using that exact keyboard right now, anon.
>>61778048
Every week at least, waterproof medical keyboards are great for that. I hope one day I can say the same about waterproof mouse.
>>61778238
Mk3s had nice seats though.
A lot of people are making asses of themselves in this thread, mechanical keyboards serve a lot of purposes, and are a worthy investment for a lot of people.
>>61778048
I try to wipe it down every other week.
I'll pull all the keys for cleaning every three or four months.
i like how quickly this went from asking about cleaning keyboards to some jackass splurting shit about mechanical keyboards
>>61778675
The issue is albeit mech keyboards helps to develop better typing skills (for example, avoid bottoming out, etc) still are limited by the QWERTY layout and other factors.
Using a mech keyboard will no make a better typist really. My mother is a touch typist and she uses a rubber dome.

You're like audiophiles arguing that you can never go back to using earbuds once you've tried out a $30,000 audio setup.
>>61784924
Yeah dude a $200 keyboard with obvious improvements over a $5 one is akin to purchasing a $30,000 headset
>>61785054

>>61784857
can confirm , having the exact same pressure and feel for each key is fantastic , add to that a satisfying "click" for each keystroke (cherry mx black & full metal buckling spring here)

Are you going to throw away said $5 keyboard just because it's dirty? Anon, this is part of the cycle of poor that stupid poor people do that keeps them poor.
>Poor buys cheap shit
>Not poor buys decent shit
>Poor throws away cheap shit when something goes wrong because they're not competent enough to fix cheap shit and cheap shit isn't worth fixing anyway.
>Not poor maintains decent shit
>After this cycle repeats several times, poor has invested more money and resources into cheap shit than not-poor has into decent shit.
Cars, furniture, appliances, electronics, it's all an endless cycle of things hitting their end-of-life cycle and how you deal with it.
>">implying i'm poor becuz i use membrane keys"
I'm implying you're poor because you've adopted the policy of buying cheap shit and then buying new cheap shit when things go wrong instead of buying something nice the first time and being competent enough to handle things like repairs and maintenance.
>>61785846
He can throw away 40 of them for the same money, 1 keyboard every year mean 40 years of service, 80 if keep them for 2 years, will your meme keyboard still work 40/80 years from now?
>>61785846
No. What the fuck are you talking about?
I have a $5 OEM keyboard that came in an unmarked cardboard box with some family computer like 10-15 years ago. I've been using it daily ever since and it works perfectly fine to this day. I have used mechanical keyboards for extended periods of time and still don't really care buying one. My friend owns one and I type on it whenever I'm at his house. It's different at first sure, but once you get used to it you basically just stop noticing it.
I'll say it again, paying $195 for a keyboard that produces a slightly different noise and typing sensation is a largely pointless luxury, especially compared to other keyboard features that make a much more noticeable impact, such as a wireless adapter, backlighting, macro keys, a numpad, the actual physical dimensions of the keyboard and so on. I could buy a proper mouse, a pair of decent headphones and a stick of RAM for the same money. Hence, it's a poor investment. I don't know why you're being so autistic about this.
>>61778048
Knock the dust off it with canned air and give it a good shake every few days. I do need to give it a proper cleaning, as its getting a little dirty between the keys.
