Are these keyboards all interchangeable?
L430 T430 T430S X230 W530 T530
Asking because I want to order one from China and I've never owned a T series so I don't know if the seller is lying or not. That's a really excellent feature if true that you can take the keyboard from a T430/T530/W530 and drop it straight into an X230.
>>
Arw is the new thinkpads not waterproof? I poured a basket of water over my t470 and it shut off and let out some of that blue smoke... funky smell. I tried turning it on and it wont come on. How to dry it?

So how did you guys modify your ThinkPad to make it feel more like the laptop you've always wamted?

>X230
>installed 16GB RAM because fuck it

I'd love to be able to 3D print a custom touchpadless palm rest one day

>>
>>61777625
I thought touchpadless palmrests existed or am I thinking of the X200/X210. I did most of that too but imo glueing the touchpad is unnecessary. You never actually come in contact with the touchpad if your fingers never leave homerow.
>>
>>61777689
I've always accidentally clicked the touchpad when I was using the trackpoint. I had it disabled so it didn't register the click but it was fucking annoying because the X230 touchpad feels cheap as fuck.

Since xx20 series there is no touchpadless option anymore
>>
>>61777884
I see. That said it's still at the size where you shouldn't be touching it by accident. This all went out the window xx40 onwards iirc when they introduced those fuck huge touchpads.
>>
>>61777316
I thought it would be cool, but that ThinkPad 555BJ is just a rebranded Canon NoteJet, which is manufactured by Acer. The hinge eats itself and it would be almost impossible to find one that isn't damaged.

Just buy what you have in hand.
Thinkpads aren't that good as shilled here, and macbooks aren't that terrible.
Or search elitebooks or dell latitudes.
>>
>>61778408
Well if you want maximum ThinkPad quality you're out of luck because few of the old IBM models are usable as a daily driver today.

If you can't get an X220 but you want 12" either get an X200 for muh freedom or an X230 for a more modern approach.
If you're OK with 14" get a T400 for muh freedom or a T430 if you want int modern.
The T420 is OK too but both the 1366x768 and the 1600x900 screen are dog shit even by ThinkPad standards.

>>
>>61779830
Fuck Japanese keyboards, t. living in Japan. They're so fucking shit they're meant for little chinks with baby hands. And don't even get me started on the buttons that switch from English to Japanese but are only ONE WAY. For some reason they don't understand the concept of "toggle".
>>
>>61780024
This is why tpg is such a shithole these days.
Actually it's possible to write a fucking script that will contaminate every single tpg with randomly generated questions
"I got XXXX with YYYY for ZZZZ. Did I do good? Am I a good boy?"

Fucking off yourself and read OPs post, you shitstain.
>>
>>61780156
Can i even remap those keys to something else like opening a Terminal window or something? I won't be using the Japanese input method in the OS anyway and the rest of the keys is the same as my native layout aside from the extra keys.
>>
>>61780208
Probably.
>>
>>61780156
>but are only ONE WAY
That sounds kinda nice. If you press that button, you always know which layout you switched to. You don't always know that with a toggle, without testing or visual feedback. Sometimes you press that key by accident, or you wake the computer from suspend and you don't really know which layout was last used.
>>
>>61780156
>are only ONE WAY
does that mean you're switching to Japanese and then it stays that way forever and you have to buy a new keyboard?
>>
>>61780403
No, it means you have to go to the IME on your desktop and click back into latin mode.
>>

Has anyone with a nvidia gpu thinkpad (t430 for example) tried out overclocking the display through nvidias custom resolution utility? Other laptops seems to be able to hit really high hz.
>>
>>61780572

I have a t430 and CSGO and dota run ok. Dota is almost always 60 but CS can drop into the 40s sometimes. This is with the integrated graphics, with the nvidia dedicated I'd expect both would be solid 60 at above minimum.

I'm looking at used Thinkpads from a particular seller (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/nhx_it_brokers?_trksid=p2047675.l2559) on Ebay and they have different "grades" (F1, F5, V7, C3, etc.) but it's not immediately clear to me what they signify.

All their Thinkpads:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?_odkw=thinkpad+t60&_ssn=nhx_it_brokers&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xthinkpad.TRS0&_nkw=thinkpad&_sacat=0

I would expect A1 to be best and Z9 to be worst but the description for a V2 ("Complete, no software installed. Please see main item description below for full information.") seems to be better than for a C3 ("Complete, no software installed. Used, cosmetically graded - will have one or more of the following: Chip/Scratched case, Hinge play, generally grubby, 1/2 missing/worn keys, wifi switch missing. Please see main item description below for full information.").

Maybe Z is the best? But then this Z1 has a fucked screen: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-X201-Core-i5-2-40Ghz-4GB-160GB-spares-repair-Cracked-screen-Z1-/352059492661?hash=item51f8618935:g:je4AAOSwR29ZGxI2

In your case, you really have to choose between the X201, X220, or X230 tablet models, which cover the first three i5 generations. I can't really say how good they compare to proper drawing tablets, as I used my X200 tablet function mainly for notetaking and reading, but they are pretty responsive.

There's no /Friendly Windows Thread/, so my question goes here:

I installed W8.1 on my T420 recently. I've never used this piece of shit OS before (meaning 8.1, not Windows in general of course).

Questions:

Why the fuck do "apps" exist as well as normal software?

Every time I right click in the start menu, the laptop freezes like a cunt. What's up with that and how do I fix it? Pic. related, I'm trying to organise this "modern looking" menu piece of shit.

My stance on Windows is that every version is a botnet because of all the telemetry updates and the closed source of the OS. Might as well go for the latest one

Of the top of my head libreboot's directions says bbb rev3, pomona clip, 3v external psu (breadboard maybe?), 5v psu, wires, scientific/or atx psu, etc.

It'll be my main laptop for a while and using Cuckbuntu-MATE would have been a trek:

A while ago I used a fancy laptop without DVD rom and only USB 3.0, so I couldn't install W7 because of the lack of drivers, so i bought a 8.1 key from Ebay for £5. At the time I specifically did /g/-tier research and came to the conclusion that 10 is botnet but 8.1 is okay. Thought the MSDN/volume product key shit will get nuked by now, but it worked.

Anyway, anyone got a similar issue?

yes I believe so
although with express cards limited bandwith you do not want to pass it through to the internal screen.

The iGPU heatsink for my T520 has a pulsing sound from the fan (every few seconds the fan has a burst of higher RPM basically) and the brand new dGPU heatsink I ordered as a replacement has an incredibly disconcerting clicking or arcing sound when you hold the laptop closer to vertical (it almost sounds like the fan blades are rubbing against the copper fins, but it's too light and sporadic to be something that violently mechanically awry).

I may just try transplanting the dGPU fan into the iGPU heatsink. Why do I have the worst luck with thinkpads bros?

Should I get a 500 gb 7200 rpm HDD in a P51s and then upgrade myself to an NVMe SSD? Really don't want to spend 340 fucking dollars on a 512 gb SSD. That's like half the cost of the entire laptop for me.

It's priced lower because it's cheaper to put high spec'd components in a large chassis. The smaller the laptop, the more expensive it is.

If a laptop is designed to be a mobile workstation, i.e. a desk laptop, it doesn't need to be resilient to bumps, hits and scratches because it's not meant to be carried around as often as the X and T series.

You just have select dgpu only or something similar to that so you system bypasses Optimus and directly uses your dgpu

To expand a bit more (just in case you don't know or to help some other anon)
How Optimus works is by writing into your igpus framebuffer which is only limited to 60 hz

I'm planning on buying an X200 + ultrabase tonight for a good deal off of craigslist.

Can I purchase a WXGA LCD HV121WX6-110 (used for x201's and others) and install it on the X200 and get it to work under GNU/Linux?

I want an X200 without the screen resolution of 1200x800, that is painful

I got my Thinkpad T420 today. This is the first Thinkpad I have ever owned and I must say I am already impressed with the keyboard. I used to shitpost in these threads because I just couldn't believe there were any good laptops for typing and whatnot. Not only is typing comfortable but the laptop just seems well designed. This is a huge step up from my Acer Aspire 7741Z-4643.

I think that might be a little much but then again I had gotten a really good deal on a T420 for under $90.

Hey lads, never owned a Thinkpad but I've been lurking and I think I want to take the plunge

Budget: $240 max

Location: PA, USA

Size: 14 or 15.6, either or

Performance: I'd like for it to be quick and responsive. I download alot of movies and TV and such, so I'd like to be able to watch them at full resolution with no hiccups. Maybe some light gaming or emulating

Other requirements: I'm not too tech savvy. I'd just like for it to do everything reliably

Thanks in advance

I've an X61 with slow-ish wifi connection, and it can't pick up 5G connections

I have an X201, X220 and T60p that all can pick up 5G connection

Are they all the same mSATA looking wifi card? Is the 'X61 wifi upgrade' just giving it a better wifi card, and will any of these suffice?

I took out the T60p WLAN card, it has 2 holes at the top for 2 cables, but the X61 has 3 holes for 3 cables (a grey, white, and black one), and also the screw that holds it in place is completely stripped, no luck opening it.
If I do manage to unscrew it, do I just use 2 of the 3 cables in the current wlan card then?

The touchpad is bigger or smaller, and thus the keyboard can be slightly bigger or smaller. Don't be condescending.

>>61804451
They're two very different parts. Don't answer to questions you don't understand. The touchpad has nothing to do with anything when the question is about the keyboard.

Is a Latitude E6320 with a 2520m and 4gb ram worth $180?

>>61780836
Mine had a completely stripped screw before I ever touched it.
>>
>>61805615
That's the laptop I have: >>61795808
I paid 35€ for mine from a company that was getting rid of their old laptops. They were nice enough to put a new SSD in it for me, probably worth more than the 35€ I paid.

The screen is broken because I closed the lid with an earbud on the keyboard, totally my fault and honestly I'm surprise it lasted this long because I didn't really take care of it.

What I like about it:
>keyboard (comfortable with nice travel)
>durable (dropped it many times)
>trackpoint

What I hate about it:
>screen (1366x768, dim)
>only one USB port

Other considerations: the hinges are decent, but still not completely stiff, the screen can be moved back and forth a bit. Feels and looks plastic, not 'premium'. Maximum memory it can hold is 8Gb. No USB3.0.

For $180 I'd say look for a T430 as it has a higher screen resolution, better processor and can hold more memory, as well as more than one USB port (and USB3.0). Having used the e6320 for over 9 months I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it. It simply doesn't age well. In fact, I wouldn't buy one at all and my smashing the screen accidentally was a lucky break and a chance to finally buy a T430.

tl;dr no

Should I buy a genuine battery for my t420 or are the alternative ones just as good?
>>
found an X200t for 65€, should I bite? It's in a really nice condition too. I already have a T430 and this could be a nice addition after installing 8GB of RAM, so I could also take notes and draw a little bit. the only thing holding me back is my autism that bothers me with the CPU clock speed (L9400 is 1.86ghz on both cores), can I get it to 2ghz somehow or is it impossible? And how hard is it to libreboot it? I want a completely free machine alongside my T430. I have soldering experience.
>>
>>61806692
genuine is always better, generic ones suck most of the time, because:
-they usually dont last as long
-they lose charge easier (as in they cant hold as much as when you first install it)
-they usually dont have the promised capacity
>>61805934
x220 is a lot better, T400 is really outdated and the only xx00 series that's still worth getting is x200 because comfyness without a trackpad and only trackpoint and 16:10 1280x800 screen
>>61805890
look at rossmanns video and the followup one by his client, seems nice but because it uses one of the docks DP connections it will basically power two screens at the same time which will decrease performance obviously, I dont know if there is a fix for this under linux
>>61804324
remove again and check whether or not you made some mistake while installing
>>61803914
either give up or by force, cant really guarantee that nothing breaks though
>>
>>61806692
also check OP's links, in one of the guides he explains why generic sucks. you could either get an expensive one that'll last you a long time or a cheap one that'll lose charge a lot easier
>>
>>61806692
I bought a fake one because i literally can't buy an original, it just werks.

If i had the option though i'd go original.
>>
>>61806822
the only thing is that the official libreboot site says that not all x200t's are supported so it bothers me quite a bit. still, 65€ is pretty much a steal
