The build quality was. Snapped hinges. That's the 3rd broken time. I was able to fix it with glue the other times but it's getting ridiculous. Usual problems with pleather deteriorating on all the pads. Sound was really bad without an EQ, but with EQ they're decent enough on the mids /highs with that monster bass hit that almost makes up for it
>>
>>61775668

Thanks for achieving end game from when I was a kid growing up with mini disc - still wanted one of those - but the price is crazy. Just happy my iPhone and canopener has 24bit - a great eq and cross feed. Can't live without them in 2017 to be perfectly honest.

Super comfy for moderate to long sessions. I perfer headphones with some kind of cloth on them like satin or velvet.

>Sound signature
As I will be using these with just my Nintendo Switch, something that will make both the sound effects and maybe more importantly the ingame music sound great. I don't go hard in any kind of PVP, so I don't need to be able to pick up the slightest noise of footsets or anything.

Maybe something similar or like the Sennheiser HD 558, as these are what I currently use and love.

Hifiman's build quality and especially customer service are notoriously poor. It's your risk to decide on.
>>
>>61781210
Should I just replace my old m50s with the newer m50x's then? Better safe than sorry I suppose?
>>
>>61781096
If you don't mind open back cans, they're a good deal. They measure better than most headphones at that price in both distortion and fqr. The things to consider are:
1. You'll be waiting months to get them because it's a massdrop made thing.
2.hifiman has a reputation for poor customer service. The build quality is fine on them and people shitting on them for that seem to forget that almost every major headphone maker has issues with quality that are just as bad if not worse.
3. You'll need an amp.

If you need new headphones immediately, get the ath-m40x or ath-msr7. The m40x measure flatter then the m50x and the msr7 are god tier sound, build quality, and looks.

Ahh, actually I think I will go with the MSR7s. Just for context: my audiophile friend recommended me the M50s back when I got them years ago (I'm like, headphone science illiterate) and they were great. Before those I had bought a pair of senn 280HD cans from guitar center because the dudes working there said they were the best thing on god's green earth, tried them for like, a week, hated them, and returned them for the M50s I got online instead. These MSR7s look fucking swag though, thanks for the advice.

I'd say around $60-70. This is a hard question to answer because Iems offer some crazy price/performance currently
Most improvements are in subjective catagories like soundstage.
>>
>>61781096
They're decent entrypoint planars (unlike the flawed 1060), although they have a reputation for failing easily / poor QC, and hifiman is infamously bad at support.
I personally think planars (or headphone "tech" in general) is a meme, as what matters really is the results.
I'd suggest doing some research, reading/watching reviews, etc. for HD600 and, at a lower budget, HD579.
>>

Planars have a couple of objective advantages though. The first is that they usually have much lower bass distortion than any dynamics. While you can't conclude that the distortion is audible, you also can't conclude that it's inaudible. And as a trend, less distortion is better. They also usually have flat impedance curves, which means they'll suffer from less bass bloat or general FR strangeness when connected to a higher impedance amplifier.

The 600s are *almost* flat. They have a roll off in low end bass but after ~60 hz they sustain a flat response all the way to the highs. The bass is there but without the vibrato and substance from the lower end.

They sound flat but aren't flat by spec.
>>

Definitely not neutral. Quite bassy, but at least not niggerbassy. Midrange could be better. They're decent headphones vs price in any event, which makes them better than most of the choices available in the market, and should sound awesome if it's your very first decent set.

4chan loves to be contrarian. People shit on things here when things get to popular. Sennheiser is popular, so it has its fans here, and its fans here cause 4chan's naturally contrarian bunch to respond predictably. Sennheiser has been the most hotly debated subject in /hpg/ for a long time because of this.
There has been a retarded shitposting war in these threads for the longest time between the pro and anti Sennheiser factions. Both sides constantly attempt to shift the narrative in the debate by accusing everyone from the opposite faction as being a single bogeyman. This shitposting is incessant and has been forever. Unfortunately, this frequency and volume of this shitposting has increased since the tripfag showed up. We don't really talk about headphones these days in here. We just fight about Sennheiser.

Diffuse field equalization is not irrelevant: http://hauptmikrofon.de/theile/1986-3_Standardization-of-studio-headphones_JAES-1986.pdf
Diffuse field equalization is an ISO standard. Granted, there is no widespread agreement in the audio world as to any single headphone equalization target curve, but an ISO standard is certainly not irrelevant.

Everything you're saying is common sense, and slightly condescending, because it implies I lack it if you think it needs saying (you're quoting me so you're talking to me). As far as I can tell, the people recommending HD600 nonsensically to everybody for everything are definitely false flaggers. These are also the same people who shitpost right at the start of every post with "what's the second best headphones after the HD600?" and such.
>>61783412
Framesize is the length of a frame in milliseconds. As it's necessary to have a whole frame at hand for decoding (and playing) it, small framesizes are important in videoconference and such, where latency matters.
If you're encoding music, the default should serve you well. There's also no benefit on using bigger frames than the default unless your bitrate is very low.
>How can I increase the quality of the encodes at 256 VBR?
256 is the max bitrate. Transparency's reportedly achieved at 100-160kbit depending on people and equipment. If you need more quality than what 256kbit/s has to offer, just use something lossless like FLAC. Lossless is what you should be using for archival anyway.

At least someone gets it. I got tired of seeing people recommend the hd600s for people with $200 budgets who requested closed cans for portable use. Or people who wanted v-shaped sound signatures, something with good bass or good clarity, something easy to drive.

It's not that the hd600s are the worst headphone ever. It's that they are a highly situational dynamic driver open back headphone with a good amount of sonic discrepancies. They're also hard as fuck to drive, not everyone wants to buy $200+ headphone amps and obviously that makes them not portable (besides the open back part as well). The build quality also has issues that just seem to be outright ignored by the shillheisers.

The HD600 doesn't seal. Most so-called "dynamics" don't seal, unlike the flat driver counterparts. They are deliberately designed to be highly porous.
In any case, the vast majority of the results that show bass extension on the HD600 are made by flat plate coupler.

>>61784633
>>61784778
There is obviously no need to. The body is too small to have an effect below 100Hz. The response is unity gain.

Pressure. Pressure leaks through the earpads, which is uncontrolled, and the controlled leak though the porous baffle. HD600 by design is also quite resistant to earpad leak.
Early results from Golden Ears did use plate couplers. They switched over to the head at a later time. The delta would have more to do with the lack of midrange gain present on a plate coupler.

Looking into getting a new pair of headphones. I'm not incredibly picky and I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile autist. I primarily listen to Metal and similar music, so I don't really expect any remarkable performance to bring out the details in the sound, but I do listen to other genres. I like listneing to Jazz and Ambient, so I would like a pair of headphones that sound fine with shitty knuckle dragging Metal and a genre like Jazz.
I want to avoid any pair that can potentially be fatiguing. I had a pair of Sennheiser HD280s and the combination of their ridiculously uncomfortable fit and fatiguing and thin sound started to drive me crazy. I've been told Grados are excellent for rock and Metal music, but I've also heard they are extremely harsh and I'm worried it's going to drive me nuts just like the HD280s. I don't care about muh bass but I do want it to be adequate.

>Budget
No more than around $400.

>Open or Closed
In my limited experience with headphones, I've found I liked open headphones the best, but I am open to options from either end.
>>
>>61787057
>I want to avoid any pair that can potentially be fatiguing.
If you have an opportunity to try them out I'd try out HD600 and HD650, but if you don't it's probably a safer bet to go with HD650 which absolutely won't be fatiguing for anyone.

Hifiman he-400s or he-400i or he-4xx if you're willing to wait.

Monoprice monolith m1060

If you're listening to metal, you'll want something with low distortion bass and mid bass for kick drum and downtuned guitars/bass guitars. This is something planar magnetic options do very well. Take what budget you have left and invest in a decent headphone amp and you'll be set.

I own and enjoy my dt990 but I'm starting to look for something new. Probably going to go with the HE-400i and a $100 IEM(thinking the smigot en700) because critical listening isn't the same as enjoying music. I just don't listen to music much anymore for some reason and I think it's the dt990 "fatiguing" me but it could also just be faggotry.
Anyway I think that's a fairly good list although I don't see how the HD 599 could be better than the HD 600 and the DT 990 be .4 better than the 880. Also idk why the m50x is higher than the m40x, they sound almost identical to my sony xba-h1 which isn't a good thing.

Loudness contour downplays importance of low frequency boosts to subjective loudness. Treble boosts are more significant. The "smiley EQ" preference did not generalize to the population of listeners tested; the bass boost is most strongly associated with the inexperienced college listeners. Doesn't matter since Rtings adds even more bass without Harman's treble EQ shelf to their target.

Room reflections is from Olive-Toole's working theory of how listener's assess sound quality in small rooms.

>>61786077
The dates don't line up (see korean GE), but they do appear have used the BK head for the HD600 measurement. I think.
GE also has the X-curve compensation factor, which favors a response with less bass and treble.

GE's measurements around the time the HD600 measurement was taken do not appear here to take the X-curve bass reduction into account.
I'd also assume the HD600 measurement was a dummy head measurement since, at the bottom of that measurement's page, it details the test system used and mentions the dummy head.

I was thinking more about when they made the switch to the head. My Korean literacy is weak, and I don't trust machine translations.
>X-curve
They almost certainly do.
Other than that they say that the X-curve*Inverse DF response is incorporated into the measurement, the Ety kids w/ grey triflange and Senn HD580 display bass behavior that can't happen acoustically. Suggests either a window failure on GE's part or bass compensation.
>>
>>61788186
>Other than that they say that the X-curve*Inverse DF response is incorporated into the measurement
They don't specifically state this. The measurement in >>61787903 would very clearly not show a bass rolloff below 60 Hz if the X-curve bass compensation were built into it.
>>
>>61781096
i'm looking at the Oppo PM3 myself for planar headphones (closed though) but I've been holding back because you can't even buy replacement pads for it
>>
>>61788359
The part where it says
>Diffuse Sound Field Equalization + The small room X-Curve Compensation

Etymotic in-ears normally display more bass loss than that. X-curve correction softens that. What part are you taking issue with?
