You know what is interesting? Japan is still the king at developing tech...they're just shit at actually turning it into a marketable consumer product.

For starters go look at the number of technology patents per country per year. Japan is right under the United States and the EU in total tech patents per year.

Now here is the thing. Patents on their own don't necessarily mean shit as you could in theory have lots of shitty patents that no one cares about. Thankfully there is another figure that attempts to gauge the value of your country's technological developments and that is the technology trade balance which compares the amount your country receives from other countries licensing your technology vs how much your country pays to license other countries tech.

Know what country has the highest ratio in the world by a massive margin? Yep, it's still Japan. Other countries license Japanese technology at over a 4 to 1 ratio (meaning Japan makes $4 from their tech for every $1 of tech they have to license from someone else).

Know what country has the lowest ratio in the OECD? Korea. They have a NEGATIVE ratio meaning that they aren't actually developing jack shit worth of new tech that anyone wants and are instead having to license tech heavily from other countries (mainly Japan and the U.S.). What they are good at doing is taking that tech and turning it into a profitable consumer product at a decent price.

I'm more concerned about the accumulation of wealth from chinese multinational companies, and eventually their buying of western, japanese, or korean brands.
imagine one day some chinese company buying google, facebook, ibm, microsoft, apple, sony, samsung, or intel. that'd be a reversal of epic proportions. it wouldn't be so bad if they had western ideals and values, but they're not known for a kind history (neither is the west if you look at the details, but the west did try to create some fair play rules since the end of the 19th century (human rights, right to life, property, due process, etc), even if they don't always abide by them).

Japanese management is notoriously resistant to change. They are very slow to respond (if ever) to changing market trends like Korean or US companies. Japanese consumers are also generally very conservative and will buy worse products if they are domestically made or because they are cheaper due to no import tax.

These days hardware is half (or less) of a product's success. You don't win in the market like you used to by just making superior hardware. Take a VCR which has no software to speak of really, JVC and Sony etc. dominated those markets. Now look at Nintendo's consoles today - top tier hardware but ruined by stupid software decisions (friend code system, using old versions of webkit, virtual sales restrictions & stupidity).

Exceptions still exist. Nikon and Canon dominate the camera markets since all of that is driven by hardware, either by camera hardware or CCD sensor technology.

It's kinda shit in a lot of ways. No matter how long you've been around, how well you speak the language, no matter what, you'll always be considered as "the foreigner" in the most archetypal way possible; it's not something that you wouldn't expect, most people just underestimate how much it'll rub them the wrong way. You can speak Japanese with good fluency by any standard, yet people will still change their vocabulary with you to something much simpler. When you meet someone new they'll try English if they can, then fall back to baby-tier Japanese. There's plenty of cool people who don't really give a shit as long as you're a decent person and try to at least flow along with the Japanese culture/way of life. Act like your typical baka gaijin and everyone will hate you, of course, that's a given. Don't try to talk about your mongolian Powerpoints at work or school unless you want a social deathwish, any retard should know that yet so many fail.
