It's time to face the facts. Richard Stallman is nothing more than a whining, overly obese autistic manbaby who has not done anything beneficial for the computing OR technology world in the past 20 years. Seriously. Name something that RMS has done after 1995 besides bitching, crying, and moaning about bullshit that does not matter, or making some retarded, incomprehensible speech.

He demands that Linux be called GNU/Linux. That is fucking insane. The only reason GNU, GPL, and FSF are still a THING is because of Linus and the invention of Linux. If anything, Stallman should rename GNU to Linux/GNU, because without Linus, the GNU, GPL, and FSF would not be a thing anymore.

Stallman still has the fucking gonads to act like he's superior to everyone else. Saying shit such as "I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone" right after Steve Jobs' death. What an asshole. Stallman has not even programmed a single line of code since 2008, that was AFTER he essentially stopped in 1992.

He should be fucking grateful Linus stepped in to save his ass, and even allowing him to take partial credit for his achievements. If it wasn't for Linus, he would be nothing, he would probably be dead in a Burger King dumpster right now.

Besides, what has he ever even done? He claims to have written eMacs, but in reality he actually cloned gosmacs (the first eMacs that was made for UNIX). He didn't even write 50% of the code in eMacs.

You might say he wrote GCC and GDB, but the truth is that he initally wrote the C compiler, but now the vast majority for the same compiler is done by contributors.

He's a washed up, morbidly obese man who tries to stay relevant by having these retarded arguments that are similar to those found in the Soviet Union. Face it GNU/Freetards, Richard Stallman is a fat dickhead, and the only reason his name is still in the books is because of Linus's achievements

>In some ways, Linux was the project that really made the split clear between what the FSF is pushing which is very different from what open source and Linux has always been about which is more of a technical superiority instead of a — this religious belief in freedom.

>There are 'extremists' in the free software world, but that's one major reason why I don't call what I do 'free software' any more. I don't want to be associated with the people for whom it's about exclusion and hatred.
>-- Linus Torvalds
>>
Don't call it GNU/Linux. It gives Stallsham undue credit. He's done nothing but take credit for the work of others and has the audacity to call himself a Doctor when he couldn't even finish his Masters.

wrote emacs
Contributed to guy steele's TECO macros, later cloned gosmacs, the actual first emacs for UNIX. If stallman wrote emacs, apple is the sole creator of webkit.
wrote gcc and gdb
He wrote the C compiler initially, but the vast majority of development for other compilers and the C compiler has came from non-stallman sources.

And he hasn't programmed in years. Stallman is washed up, and his justifications for copyleft are horribly invalid nonsense that would make more sense if they were actual thinly veiled communism instead of selfish ramblings and a desire for a world that catered to his specific social class.
>>
Reminder: GNU and FSF exists because Richard "M" Stallman got a hissyfit at a printer being propriatary, yet printers are still propriatary. Richard Stallman has contributed literally nothing to the world.

>>
>>61752090
It depends on whether you make mistakes and how fast your CPU is. It ranges from several hours to days.

That's for LFS. You would likely not install every single package in BLFS. Getting X and a nice assortment of programs installed would take any where from several additional hours to days. Add more time if you want one of the heavyweight DEs like KDE or GNOME.

After that, you'll likely spend a significant amount of time making tweaks and doing configuration. Also things like tracking down firmware.

>>61752494
There's arch-anywhere, which is really just an installer for Arch, but try installing it manually. It's not that hard. If you are new, it may take you 2 hours to a complete system with everything you like, without anything you dislike.

Exec is the part where whatever program you're launching replaces the calling program within the same process.

> enables right click on the touchpad, disables the touchscreen etc
Can, probably should, be done in a script before calling the WM. xinitrc is a shell script, and the LightDM config files aren't, so you would call a xinitrc-ish script from LightDM if you're going that route.

> sets the wallpaper with feh
You could do something fucky like
while feh <args>; do sleep 300; done &
before the exec call if feh can run without X. Which I'm not sure it does. Probably something that needs to be called from from a WM configuration file.

Names convey meanings; our choice of names determines the meaning of what
we say. An inappropriate name gives people the wrong idea. A rose by any name
would smell as sweet—but if you call it a pen, people will be rather disappointed
when they try to write with it. And if you call pens “roses,” people may not re-
alize what they are good for. If you call our operating system “Linux,” that con-
veys a mistaken idea of the system’s origin, history, and purpose. If you call it
“GNU/Linux,” that conveys (though not in detail) an accurate idea.

But does this matter for our community? Is it important whether people know
the system’s origin, history, and purpose? Yes—because people who forget his-
tory are often condemned to repeat it. The Free World that has developed around
GNU/Linux is not secure; the problems that led us to develop GNU are not com-
pletely eradicated, and they threaten to come back.

When I explain why it’s appropriate to call the operating system “GNU/Linux”
rather than “Linux,” people sometimes respond this way:

Granted that the GNU Project deserves credit for this work, is it really
worth a fuss when people don’t give credit? Isn’t the important thing that
the job was done, not who did it? You ought to relax, take pride in the
job well done, and not worry about the credit.

This would be wise advice, if only the situation were like that—if the job were
done and it were time to relax. If only that were true! But challenges abound, and
this is no time to take the future for granted. Our community’s strength rests on
commitment to freedom and cooperation. Using the name GNU/Linux is a way for
people to remind themselves and inform others of these goals.
>>
>>61754486
>And if you call pens “roses,” people may not re-
>alize what they are good for.
That is such an excellent analogy.
>Our community
There are many different people with different opinions in "our community" I would ask you to respect that.
>Using the name GNU/Linux is a way for people to remind themselves and inform others of these goals.
This betrays an elitist point of view in which you assume that everyone but you is braindead or ignorant. I assure you, that is not the case.

Except it's not at all like that, because while Microsoft made Windows, GNU did not make Linux. GNU code is a very small part of almost any so-called "GNU/Linux" distribution. Freedesktop has more lines of code in most Linux distributions than does GNU. It would be more reasonable to call it Freedesktop/Linux.

Can we just come up with an entirely new name that doesn't pay homage or favoritism to any particular group?

Because it just occurred to me that what really defines this OS is just the circle of developers and its community. If all distros suddenly decided to migrate to a new kernel and all the same devs followed along and I just received this new kernel in an update one day, I would still mentally think of it as being the same OS just with a new kernel, and if we completely got rid of GNU and had totally new userland, if it was the same devs and same big name distros that migrate to it I'd still view it as the same operating system too.

What we have here is more than just "Linux" and "Linus" and "GNU" (and yes it's more than systemd too poettering get it through your fucking skull).
In fact I think having a name that doesn't belong to ANY group is the most real representation of what this OS is.

Please submit your proposals for new names.
I propose calling it Spergux
>>
>>61754800
GNU is the framework anon. GNU (GNU's Not Unix), is an operating system, made in the 80s to have and use an unix-like system in freedom. When Linus set Linux free (it wasn't free software til mid 90s), there was no point to develop Hurd anymore and people added Linux to the GNU system. Both parts developed based on this framework. Todays distributions ofc contain lots and more lots of free software, all based on the roots of the free software movement from the 80s, but they aren't part of GNU and they aren't part of Linux, so starting with
>GNU is a very small part
is just as silly as saying

After four good years on Arch, I'm considering going back to Windows.
I spend 98% of my time on arch, dual booting win for casual gaming. Only now I've realized that I can keep developing stuff on Windows somewhat comfortably.
This is a friendly request to convince me not to.
>>
>>61754977
>and people added Linux to the GNU system
Err, that seems like an inversion of history desu. People chose Linux (the kernel) as an alternative to BSD, that it also had a clean-room userspace surely factored into their decision but they certainly didn't say "Oh I know, lets avoid AT&T by using the GNU system. Now, what kernel shall we use with it...". Because at that time (and still today) the userspace was more of a fungible piece of the whole than the kernel. Because so much money was spent on hardware and the kernel is what decides hardware support. You can tell this by the fact that people have historically called operating systems with the linux kernel "Linux Distros".
I'm not saying that GNU isn't great but twisting words like that surely doesn't help your case.
>>
>>61755037
I'm pretty fine with calling Alpine a Linux system, since Alpine is basically just the kernel and a stripped down userland in order to be a very small system.

The WSL is a giant Microsoft-Canonical-Linux Foundation circlejerk, everyone rubbing each others dick:
>Bash on Ubuntu on Windows: After suffering from Linux Mint #1 on distrowatch, Canonical is great again and known for "serious business"
>Windows back on the top for developers
>Red Hat also wants a piece of the cake
>companies stuff money into the Linux Foundation
>Fedora appears on WSL
>a bit late, like always, but here is OpenSUSE

I mean, nothing against making money, but the whole thing is just extremly embrassing. Acting like VMs don't exist, acting like there's a new tech revolution. You don't really compile anything to get the base install, except the kernel if you customize it yourself. That could take maybe 30min to an hour if I remember correctly. Other than that it pretty much just takes as long as it takes you to go through the instructions.

Software on your system will start being compiled when you update it or install new software.
The most time consuming compile is the very first time you're running your new system and decide to do a full update on @world. That could take a few hours and I'd also tack on an extra 30min to an hour for each really large package you plan on installing (like firefox or libreoffice) unless you go with the binary versions (e.g. firefox-bin)

That doesn't sound too bad, I always thought Gentoo was just a meme but after reading some more it seems like it has huge advantages over arch, which is what I'm currently using. Thanks for the info
>>
>>61758486
It definitely has advantages, it's a great distro. It's not quite as bleeding edge as Arch but comes close and is (somewhat ironically) probably one of the most stable distros you'll ever use. Stable meaning you pretty much never have to reinstall it from scratch because of anything breaking and can always fix it.

It's not always easy though. You'll almost certainly experience some difficulties with portage down the road if you use it for a long time (like compiler errors, it happens), but the beauty of it is that it can always be fixed (usually you just have to re-compile something else first or change a setting in your make.conf or something simple) and the community is actually really new-user friendly.
When portage errors out it even tells you exactly what to post on the forum so people can help.
>>
>>61758592

Tab complete should automatically escape it.
One thing that comes to mind is are you sure the apostrophe is actually a part of the file name?
There was a somewhat recent (and retarded) decision to make ls put single quotes around filenames that contain whitespace, so in that case you might need to just drop the apostrophe

If it's actually in the filename itself then I have no idea why tab completion isn't doing it. Would you mind sharing the name of the file?

>>61759112
Your tab completion problem might have just been because you have another file with the same beginning.

e.g. if you had another file that started with
>The.Worlds.End
without the apostrophe then when you do tab completion it would pause after "World" for you to enter the next character (either an s or \' ) so it knows which one you want.

When that happens you should hit tab twice, then it would display both files so you can tell what's going on.

mscorefonts, it gives you arial which is good enough for most websites. It's what 4chan was designed for.

I'd also recommend NotoSansCJKjp to cover other languages especially east asian languages.

Also make sure you're actually getting what you think by using "fc-match <fontname>".
Some distros configure fonts like "DejaVu" to pretty much be used as a replacement for everything. So if you want 4chan to use arial for instance then you need "fc-match arial" to show that it's using arial.

That may be the error message you see, but that's not why it's hanging. Do you have a special WiFi driver? Try disabling that.

That and the taskbar not loading sounds like the update may have broken your systemd setup, but I'm not a Fedora desktop expert. May want to try their forums.

Hello, I am looking for a good lightweight text editor for GNU/Linux with syntax highlighting. I strongly prefer Kate, but it requires too many dependencies to be compiled on Gentoo.

My desktop environment is LXDE. I would use GEdit, but the window bar is huge, and there is no way to customize it. No amount of GTK themeing will change it, it looks as if it is programmed to be that way regardless of what GTK theme you use.

Can I get some recommendations for lightweight? I don't like sublime or atom, and vim in my opinion is really only good for editing config files.
>>
>>61762878
Specifically, I would like a text editor that respects my openbox themes. Thank you.
>>
I'll keep it simple.
Windows kept fucking me over. Have been meaning to try Linux at some stage, but not clue what flavour. Am a total newb to it. Any suggestions? Currently using Unetbootin to make it easier. Thanks for any suggestions.

Ubuntu is typically considered the standard entry-point for people curious about Linux. There is a lot of hand-holding in the installation, it mostly just works.

Be warned, though. GNU/Linux is not Windows. Certain things are done differently, things behave differently, and some programs you enjoy using on Windows are not available on Linux. However, approach it with an open mind, willing to learn, and you will be rewarded with a system that is fully-customizable and does what you tell it to do, rather than it telling you what to do.

How the heck do I upgrade the kernel on Gentoo without having to reconfigure the whole thing?
>>
>>61763029
Yeah, Ubuntu kept popping up as an entry level one. Will definitely check it out at the least.
As for it not being Windows, that I can tell. The main programs I plan on using are Skype, Gimp, and should be able to adapt to a video editing software on it.
And lastly, I'm definitely up for learning it.
Thanks for the reply, anon. I hope you have a good day.

Openbox's themes have nothing to do with your texteditor's themes.
It will use GTK/Qt themes. Openbox themes are for the window decoration and they don't affect the programs at all.

>vim in my opinion is really only good for editing config files.
Vim doesn't distinguish if a file is a "config file" or anything else. What a bunch of bullshit.
>>
>>61763638
Cut the autism. Obviously I don't mean that vim distinguishes between config files, I mean that vim is inadequate for large projects and is mostly only useful for editing config files IN MY OPINION.

I would have called out your idiocy regardless which text editor you were being stupid about. That happens to me every time I point out someone's idiocy, no matter what topic. So much about your argument. Just admit that you're an idiot and move on.

You don't have to uninstall the GTK or Qt dependencies to see how (ugly) it looks. Run it with

to test it.

GNU did nothing to contribute to the Linux operating system. Linux developers had to spend hours of work porting shitty GNU code to Linux just so RMS and his faggots can claim the whole OS is theirs. All GNU faggots care about is their own ego even though they don't even help progress Linux that much. Fuck GNU.

When I open vi it tells me I have vim installed. But when I look online for help regarding vim nothing ever works, and some things are different. for example, I'm told to make config changes in ~./vimrc, but it never changes the program. when I type :version and look at the pathing, I get this

system vimrc file: "/etc/virc"
user vimrc file: "$HOME/.virc"
2nd user vimrc file: "~/.vim/virc"
user exrc file: "$HOME/.exrc"

I don't understand why mine is different. Do I not actually have vim installed?

on ubuntu, you can set the default editor with
sudo update-alternatives --config editor
as /usr/bin/editor is a symlink to /etc/alternatives.
But there's also the $EDITOR (if I remember right) environment variable in other distros. That' my understanding anyways.
Checking that might help.

otherwise. help pls

Logical Volume Management. Basically any storage drive can have a maximum of 4 Primary partitions (Windows automatically uses like 2, because fuck) but you can have essentially unlimited Logical partitions. From what I hear you might as well just use all logical partitions, there are no downsides.

This is from what I understand from googling a couple days ago, though. I'm >>61768557 this anon and don't know what'll happen if I install WiNDoZe on a different drive than my linux installation
>>
>>61768723
MBR drives are limited to 2T in size and can have up to 4 primary partitions. GPT can have up to 128 primary partitions.
>>61768583
Another advantage of lvm is being able to use space across more than one drive as a single logical volume.
The only lv* command I've ever used tho is to delete a lvm partition which was the default choice of a gnu/linux distro I installed when I later wanted to reformat and disto hop.
>>
>>61768176

You don't even know what systemd is.
You don't know how to use it nor do you need to use it for more than starting services (if you even do that manually).
You only parrot technological opinions deemed edgy to feel smart.
I doubt you even use a Linux distribution.
There are other retarded things about your post too, but it's not worth pointing it out.

Fucking disconnect from the internet you utter imbecile.

You have to install vim-enhanced. The stock vim is built in a cut down vi mode. I don't know why anyone does this any more, but a lot of distros do.
