At 12" there's no way how you could get more real estate without making text terribly small. The only thing a higher res would do for you is make the image sharper but with that you're sacrificing Linux compatibility.

Requesting a bit of help here getting a "new" laptop (used/old would be fine), preferable a thinkpad. Having a hard time browsing and getting a grip on all the thinkpads I can choose from.

Budget: Not more than $400, $350 would be nice though.
Location: USA, New Mexico?
Size: Somewhere around the T series size
Performance: 2.5 GHz dual core processor minimum, 4 GB ram minimum 8 GB preferred (DDR3), and 200 GB HDD storage minimum.
Other requirements: Relatively good battery life, probably 3-5 hours on load if possible. Upgradeable ram and storage. Good wireless card or upgradeable one. Durable. Running "current" indie games like NT and BOI would be nice. Running games like CS:GO would be great. It needs to be able to browse the internet and watch youtube well along with running matlab nicely. An eternet port would be amazing.

Hi. I wanna buy a t530 and I have some questions.

1 - What the maximum support memory?
I read it was 16gb but in the lenovo site is 32gb.
Is this right?

2 - If I wanna upgrade the screen to 1920x1080 I just have to change the screen or something else?
Is there IPS to t530?

3 - I think this is very stupid question but I'll ask anyway.
Can I change the intel graphics 4000 to something better or only with egpu?

4 - Can I put a i7 7th generation or in a near future the 8th?

Thank you.

RAM depends on the CPU, some of the CPU's support 32GB and some 16GB. Also the T-series only have 2 memory slots, W-series has 4.

3. if you want to swap the motherboard, sure, but the Nvidia graphics weren't that great

4. depends on the CPU socket and chipset (no)
>>
>>61752130
I don't have a T530 so no idea about the first two but no you can change the hd4000 because it's part of the processor, however you can upgrade the processor but only with processors that share the same type of socket.

Im pretty sure my B key does, if I move the cursor upwards or laterally it moves at the same speed in all 3 directions and the nub barely touches the keys, but when I move it down it's clearly touching the B key and it impedes it of going at the same speed. I have a T520 so im using the old non chiclet keyboard.

I believe there is two manufacturers for the batteries, Samsung and Panasonic (or LG, or maybe there's three, I don't know). I think they rate their batteries at different voltages which can affect the mAh rating. But Lenovo holds them to a Wh standard, that being 94 Wh for the 9-cell batteries. Typically a brand new battery should have over 100% of the 94 Wh capacity.

Either way you can get it on Amazon for the same price and it's a lot easier to return items via Amazon.

Is the X220 with 6GB RAM a justified upgrade from my T400 with 3GB RAM? I'll just be using it to code, watch films, listen to music and watch porn at home and essentially the same at work when I'm not busy but without the porn.
>>

>>61754937

only thing you will have with the fake ones is for the 30 or 40 series is it and newer the battery wont work unless its 100% genuine. but for the older models youll just find the battery decays quicker.

example I had genuine 9cell for x220 and after 50 cycles it had lost 3% capacity. i had a chinko 9cell that had lost 11% capacity after 23 cycles.

What is the best thinkpad that is useable for rendering?
It's for school, basically it needs to meet the following criteria: needs to have a graphics card, needs to be light (<6lbs), needs to be able to use 16 gbs of ram, battery life better than 5 hours, needs to have best keyboard.
I need to use windows 7 so libreboot or gentoo (lol) aren't options and I'm not gonna mess around with virtual machines because I need it to be guaranteed to work.

I was already thinking about getting a t420s with i7 2620m and Nvidia NVS 4200M because I understand there is no upgrading the processors on slim models. And before anyone says anything, I don't care that it has a shitty panel, I'll probably upgrade that later.
Any ideas?
>>
>>61755605
if you're serious about rendering, you'll get the fastest quad-core unit you can afford
>>
>>61755605
You need a desktop, you're retarded if you think it'd be worthwhile to get a Thinkpad for that use case.

Get Ryzen and then get a comfy Thinkpad to control it and watch anime on.
>>
>>61755623
its only inventor lol
I also hate laptops without a track point or any other equivalent, they feel unusable to me and I definitely wont pay for one.
>>
>>61755596

I'm quite happy with with my trusty T420, but my sister is shopping for a somewhat rugged new laptop before moving to Lebanon for a year. She sent me urls for some cheapo $200ish netbooks with rubberized case accents she was considering and I figured an X-Series would fit her needs and not be utter shit.

Budget: $200-$300USD
Location: USA, but relocating to Lebanon in a few weeks
Size: Portable/Travel-friendly, probably X-Series
Performance: Usual web browsing, work-related doc editing, and wants to watch "HD movies" (no fucking clue if she downloads BD rips or just streams stuff)
Other requirements: Have to receive it and be fairly certain the battery and charger are reliable within two weeks.

This is more a request for favorable ebay vendors and such that have a good track record. I told her to just get an X220 and order an additional battery and charger at the same time, just in case. Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. And no, I don't have any imouto nudes.
>>
>>61755149
x220 is good anon, I upgraded from an x200, which is somewhat close to T400 in specs. Try to get one with an IPS screen if you can, I upgraded mine and now I have no complains about the x220.

Still, you can always put an SSD, up your RAM to 8GB and stick to the T400. The hardware is good enough for what you are doing today, and you can save some money this way.
>>
>>61755605
Get a W520. You will never get >5 hours on a T420s, especially not with an i7 and NVS. The battery in the slim model is only a 6cell and the individual cells are lower capacity flat cells compared to the round ones used in normal Thinkpads.
>>
>>61755644
It's not really viable to lug around a desktop with me to school but I do use one currently that does just fine. Also, I already have a t510 that I use but it's a little to heavy for me currently and I think I can get a better graphics card and processor in a smaller package which is why I was wondering what your opinion on the t420s was.

So here is my situation. After class I go to the library to work, in class we already have thinkstations that we use so I have that taken care of. When I go to the library there are macs available to use but since they don't have inventor installed and they are shitty old shit that doesn't run anything I need my own to use.
>>
>>61755684
what do you think of the slice? I heard it gives it quite a few more hours and while it's not ideal to have a slim laptop with a massive tumor of a battery at least it isn't permanent.

Alright, since Raven Ridge Thinkpads are coming out either end of this year or beginning of next I need a temporary laptop while I wait.

Hi /tpg/ , i am in need of some help.

I currently have a acer e3-111, very nice laptop, light a reasonably powerfull for it size and can run almost any linux distro that i throw in it. But, i dont like taking it to college with me, as i live in a 3th world hellhole and fear getting robbed in the way to college, and it will be almost impossible replacing it, because there is none in the new or used market. So, i am thinking getting a t42(i am a poorfag with other priorities for my money) for light use, mostly getting word like jobs done and occasionally a slide presentation. I would put the max 2gb of ram and a 60gb ssd, ditch the w7 that it comes with and put a light linux distro, just so i dont push the pentium M to the limit too often.

The offers in my country, for a used one with mediocre hdd and ram, or none of those at all, rovers around 80$ to 120$, and getting a t410( that is the next, 40$ more expensive thinkpad model available) is out of question either for cash or size.

Ps:i didnt search for it, but, is there a dockstation for it or that exist only for newer models?
>>
Hi /tpg/, I'm planning to upgrade my current T500 to a T520.

the wireless settings just says "insert SIM", some sources say you need a SIM card (don't need to activate it) for the GPS to work and others say you don't need a SIM card

wat do
and what other software can I use a GPS for?

So I need to repaste my CPU if it idles at 60 ish and gets up to like 97 downloading updates and stuff right?

(thinkpad t420)
>>
>>61769280
I wanted to get one but seemed somewhat redundant in the current year where every phone can do tethering.

>>61769326
Of course, you should be idling at around 45c and 50~55c if you have the fan turned off.
>>

>Of course, you should be idling at around 45c and 50~55c if you have the fan turned off.

Thanks. Wonder if my fan is even working.
Ill order some paste. Hopefully I havent damaged the CPU too much
>>
>>61769536
The fan turned off is merely an autism thing to achieve a silent memepad with an ssd and no fan, i do it with my t420 when temps are below 60c.

Also aside from repasting remember to remove and disassemble the cpu fan to clean it, the fan might be cluttered with shit inside.
>>
What thinkpad would you all recommend to someone with an unlimited budget for one?
>>
Just got a Dell Latitude E6430 8GB with SSD for ÂŁ150.

What is tpg's opinion on them? It isn't as nice looking as the thinkpads but seems better value.

Pull the trigger or no? Might be able to get a deal considering the ad has been up for almost a month, and the guy still has it.

>>61771338
yo bro I always wamted to ask you, what do you do with the x200t?
>>
>>61771404
>what do you do with the x200t?

I just use it as a normal laptop most of the time, for productivity and very light gaming (webm related). The tablet function got a lot of use in university, and I still occasionally use it as a tablet. I also take it with me if I'm travelling. The T430 is a relatively new addition, but I intend to keep it as a desktop replacement, so it stays put.

I put my dick on the keyboard and then slam the lid down full force repeatedly. Of course I do this to test if the blood will flow out the bottom properly without damaging any components. To be absolutely sure I repeat that every other day.

Most people here don't bother with he newer Thinkpads. There isn't anything wrong with the new stuff unless you hate their layouts. Go for it if you want.

Are there any worthwhile screen mods for the x220? I'm not bothered by the screen at all, just curious.

I found a x220 for 150AU is that a decent deal? I'm a Frist time ThinkPad purchaser so please excuse me this stupid question
>>
I just took delivery of an L460 yesterday.
Had a T420 in the past and an X240 that crapped out on me. Apparently something to do with a weakness in the chassis that caused the motherboard to bend if you picked it up the wrong way. Couldn't do much about it because I bought it from a random man on the internet.
I was surviving on a diet of desktop, iPad and phone for about two months before I got around to ordering this one.
>that warm happy feeling once my fingers touched the keyboard
>decent screen, IPS and finally no more 1366 for me
>little bit bulky
>plastic isn't great, very obvious downgrade from T/X, but I'll probably survive
>>
>>61772385
Oh, I see. How come? Is it just cuz the older ones are cheaper and have more popular layouts? Or are they also more durable and stuff?
>>
>>61767003
15.6" is pretty damn big. A T4x0 will fit more neatly on a desk

warranties follow the machine but it's probably too late for that now

One more stupid newbie question for the night- can I do high bitrate/10bit 1080p playback on a t440p?

Sure, but you're still only ge\oing to get 8-bit output to the panel/vidout.

Anybody buy from arrow direct on ebay? I've been trying to find an X230 but prices seem kinda high for used models that could have dead screen pixels and other blemishes.

Should I worry about anything not working? It has an SSD. Also it fell flat on the bottom.
