Welcome to /retro/, post your old hardware, software, and anything else you consider to be old.

Picked this bad boy up at a junk shop today for 10 bucks. IBM PC/2 Model 30
Its fucking immaculate inside and it cleaned up really well on the outside. Havent had a chance to tear down thr PSU yet so I wont be turning it on, I also dont have a monitor or anything else for it. I can get one at a later date from the same place though.
No battery explosions either, no corrosion or anything. Therr was hardly even any dust inside.

I also got an Apple keyboard from I think a 2 C. And an old Dell Dimension, which will be gutted for a cool sleeper build. Nothing of value is lost, no ram, no HDD, corroded PSU, pentium 3 machine
>>

and it was THIS kind of junk shop
there was literally too much stuff for me to dig through, i found zip drives, boxes upon boxes of floppies, brand new IBM DOS disks, external SCSI drives, a complete Apple 2, a bunch of Brother monochrome orange monitors, loads of old towers, a bunch of older computers that looked like 486 era stuff from Xerox? Lots of HP desktops, and oh my god the amount of Hi-Fi equipent, i found a panasonic combo 8 track, tape, record and receiver unit there. He had a milk crate of Pentium and celeron brick processors, another just full of floppy drives, and a third of ram sticks.

It was slightly off an older highway with a sign by the road that said "JUNK SHOP OVER 1500 OLD AND USED ITEMS"
How could I pass it up? Last year I bought my dad a complete box of Jarts I found in the place (banned lawn dart game that kept killing children). You just gotta drive around those backwoods areas and see what's there.

Heres what the p3 inside the Dell looked like
The whole machine was like this

Im gonna have to go back for 720k floppy disks and the ones I saw with IBM PC DOS installed. And definitely grab a ps/2 keyboard to use
Luckily ita just 14 pin VGA so my LCD monitor works, but if I can get one for cheap, the place has a lot of Brother orange monochrome monitors.

And nice and cleaned up

Theres also an ATI rage 128 card in it, very bog standard one, some 56k modem card, and a floppy disk controller card. The mobo has an AGP, 5 pci and 1 ISA slot. Not sure on the chipset but its a 700mhz P3 that was in there
Loads of corroded traces from the leaky PSU. Its a damn shame too, id love to have a Pentium 3 machine with that rage 128

Enjoy it and for the love of god leave it "original". Don't try to "mod" such classic pc. I wish I still had mine. Mine was 80286/1MBram/20MB hdd/3.5 Floppy. Stock OS was Windows 3.0/Dos 5.0. Can be upgraded to windows 3.1 no problem. Ah the memories.
>>
>>61738535
Thanks. I'll check it out.
>>
>>61738676
oh hell no, i wouldnt even if it was entirely broken inside, thats lame as shit
knowing that it works, i want to max it out with original era hardware
theres a 2mb original IBM ram expansion card i want to look for, it already has the 8087 math coprocessor, theres another open slot for a chip next to the 8086 processor but im not sure what its for, id like to get an 8 bit ISA sound card for it and maybe, maaaaaybe an ISA floppy disk controller with one of those dongles for a compact flash card, because an aging hard drive and 720k FDD is probably not a good thing to stick anything important on

i got the dell dimension for the purpose of using it as a sleeper case, guts were dead/missing (besides the cards and Pentium 3, mobo was dead, no HDD/ram/PSU dead)
>>
>>61738629
it is actually really good, its a casual bar type atmosphere but they also have regular restaurant seating
think of an applebees but less upbeat and more relaxed
they make some great burgers

i live like 15 minutes away in Porter, highway 12 is a very beautiful drive in the summer, and the beach is nearby too
>>
>>61738801
also, i have no idea what to do about this battery
im having trouble finding a replacement online, and its soldered to the ISA expansion bracket

i mean, it works, it hasnt blown up, i dont get any errors related to time and date, seems to be fine
i dont know if its been replaced or what, a lot of people with the model 30 and model 25 are saying the same thing, theyre amazed it hasnt blown up and equally amazed it still works

god tier cmos battery?
>>
>>61738889
Just lucky? I mean de-soldering it shouldn't be *too* hard provided the thing is set off from the board at any distance.
>>
>>61738889
It's a bog standard lithium/carbon monofluoride 2/3A cell. Those aren't known to leak and have shelf lives rated in decades.
It's 3V so if you had to replace it a cheap CR cell would also work.

There was also some slightly newer stuff including what looked like 486 era hardware (turbo buttons) and some pentium era machines as well. Alright /g/ im gonna stop posting in my own thread where im basically talking to myself and 2-3 other people who give a shit

Tomorrow im gonna go back to the junk shop, pick up any working ps/2 keyboard and a couple of the floppy disks i saw there for IBM PC-DOS, theyre 720k disks so they should work in my new machine, ill see if i can get one of the brother monochromes i saw there for cheap, ill bring a cable for testing and all that.
And ill get you lot some good pictures of some of whats there. I wouldve grabbed that kind of stuff originally but i only got the things i did to attempt to restore them, i had no idea the PS/2 would actually work straight away.

Goodnight

There's no reason to replace the floppy drive, unless you just want to upgrade it to 1.44MB. Just get an additional HDD controller like the LoTech one, cheaper model is CF card only.

I didn't know you could put EGA or VGA cards into XT's. I always thought you needed AT-class or higher mobos. I also thought XTs were limited to CGA.

>I didn't know you could put EGA or VGA cards into XT's. I always thought you needed AT-class or higher mobos. I also thought XTs were limited to CGA.
Yup, 8-bit ISA EGA and VGA cards where a thing, EGA was more common obviously. Card that supported both EGA and VGA on the same card exist too (two different display ports). Even cards that can display 16 color EGA on a MDA monochrome monitor. Some 16-bit VGA cards even work in 8-bit slots.

They are called supercaps (super-capacitors) for a reason, they recharge with the feedback power.
That's why they are so popular as CMOS battery replacements, literary solder one on and forget about it, as long as you use the machine from time to time, it's never going to run dry.

Well lads, this thread inspired me to go back to my teenage years. I picked up a complete working tower Dimension L800CXE. All it needs is an operating system. I had this beauty originally in 2001 (right before the coming of XP) with Win 98SE in the place of the factory Win Me and a 3DFX voodoo 3 2000 to replace the onboard graphics. I think I still got the original factory reinstall cd laying somewhere. I still got the 3DFX Voodoo 3 and the Win98SE CD to. Pic kinda related

My guess is that this would only work on boards that had one of these disgusting nickel-cadmium rechargeables since charging voltage would kill lithium button cells.
So, those caps wouldn't work on every board.

Few threads back was talking about a guy who had ordered a new battery for his PS/2 system, there was talk about supercaps too and yes, he had feedback power, specially measured it for the purpose of the discussion.
Almost all boards feed power back, even when the cells aren't supposed to be rechargeables. Try it if you don't believe me, just takes a multimeter.

Probably, else they won't last long as you said.
I also think some boards won't feed back as much power when there actually is some in the battery, only feeding it back after there is little or no current in the battery anymore, the CMOS needs power even when there is no battery. I know that even systems that don't work/boot without a CMOS battery will still feed power back to the battery pins when turned on.

Yeah, my old ibm couldn't read the Windows 3.1 install floppies either back in the day (My aunt let me "borrow" them). The solution was to copy the contents of each disc to her pc one at a time then from there onto the 720kb disks (she had slightly more modern HP system, sucker had both 3.5 & 5.25 floppy drives) So in the end it took like 14 disks to copy entire Win 3.1 install. Or stick with Win 3.0, those disks are only 7 of them

The only problem is I would have to make an entirely custom case and put the panels on it since it doesn't take ATX boards. I would be much better off using one of these since these are actual full-ATX cases

don't forget to buy a hair piece and put it on your head before you start with this hobby.

when you start looking around for a nice lens and see how hipsters, vloggers and amateur filmers drive up prices of classic lenses and even irreparably DAMAGE the lens to make them fit on their 2017 vlog camera you will start ripping hair from your head.

Well, yeah... This involves some extended dremeling and tinkering IF you have the nerve for this kinda stuff. I actually enjoy doing some hands on shit with hardware every now and then, maybe you like that stuff too.

But you always have to think about if it's worth it.
For example I have a hateboner for BTX cases.

I feel no love for 98, but 95 makes me nostalgic.

I think its because I never really used 95; my limited memories of it are playing where in the world is carmen sandiago, "IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER" and as a kid thinking my dad was a fucking wizard for upgrading the machine to 98

All 98 brings back to me is endless issues with every fucking game i would try play (because it was a 95 machine upped to 98, it was gutless), watching my dad play rainbow six, and thats about all.

xp is where my nostalgia is, i guess thats where i discovered the internet, game maker, and was REALLY able to play age of empires, rise of nations, command conquer.

doing work for DoD as IT support means i now have to see the inside and outside of xp, constantly, every fucking day, and now i can see how limited and troublesome it can be.

anyway despite this, i still want to build an old school gaming rig, using gear i never could as a kid. ive never used a voodoo, or soundcards, or anything like that; our first machine was a beige box with zero addons.

i guess mostly because age of empires and is one of the only games i still play, and i want to feel like i know my shit by building old shit, rather than new machines that are bits of expensive lego.

I was researching on getting a conversion done using an Arduino but apparently it's even to slow to process data read from a fucking Floppy.
There's some controller that KIND OF works but it costs fucking 80 bucks.
Then there's also another controller but it doesn't work as a normal controller and rather reads RAW data from the floppy for archiving purposes.

tl;dr normal USB 5.25" floppy fun is almost impossible

The first pc I ever bought the parts and built myself was not long after 2001. Was built strictly for gaming/fun so I didn't really go crazy spec wise. (Still had the dell L800CXE system). It had a Celeron 1.4Ghz/512 (or maybe 1GB) ram/20GB hdd/ 3DFX voodoo 3 2000 (Pulled from the L800CXE)/PC Power & Cooling mid tower case & PSU (Was featured in an issue of Maximum PC back in the day). I still got this system. It's packed away in storage. The original Voodoo 3 was pulled several years ago and placed in a sealed box in an anti static bag. This "New" L800CXE that I'm gonna build/refit will feature another Voodoo 3 that I got way back before they came kinda collector's items. So it kinda comes back full circle, started out with a Dimension/Voodoo, now it ends with one.

Does anyone here understand how the I/O port addresses on the original IBM PC work? I posted here a couple of days ago asking for some help setting up a what I now know is A Diamond Flower MF-100 memory expansion card with real time clock, and I was given a link to the proper programs to set it up, but unfortunately the card isn't recognized. I tried both jumper settings that appear in the card's manual, but I still received the same message. The reason that I asked about the I/O ports is that the manual mentions that the clock can be disabled in case if it conflicts with other devices using the same port. Also, does anyone know of any other issues that could cause this to happen? I replaced the battery somewhat recently, so I don't think that's whats causing the issue.

Also manual for anyone who cares:

Hah, no. The box it's in is running MS-DOS 7.1 standalone with WfW 3.11. I googled around and it doesn't appear to be Win32s compatible.

I could tranfser it to a Win98SE box but that one's running an Abit BH-6 mobo that will probably cause the OS to shit itself the instant a new set of ISA IRQ/address resources are introduced. That and I want to keep the setup more oldschool anyway.

It's funny, looking back on it, DOS with TSRs was almost a microkernel setup. Filesystems other than FAT, networking, multitasking, memory management, device drivers, all that shit had to either run in a TSR or get baked into the application itself. I've been playing around with FreeDOS recently and some of the old programs' documentation is fascinating stuff. It's a unique mix of the conversational, the technical FAQs, and "you paid hundreds for this software, here's how to crawl inside its asshole and rearrange its guts." MS-Kermit in particular is noticeable for this.

You sure you have the right driver/TSR/utility?
IIRC the link was just something to try, nobody knew if the things there will work for you.

I/O port addresses are all jumper or DIP switch configured.
I can't recall if having a RTC needed configuration on the actual motherboard DIP switches too.

Probably a couple thousand originally. The only new-ish parts are the CD drive (also from an older build), floppy emu, and the RAP-10 which was a garage sale find with some other stuff. The floppy emu was around $20 and the RAP-10 probably worked out to less than $3. Funny enough the breakout box I'm waiting on is going to be the most expensive "new" component at close to $50 shipped.

Probably not a whole lot aside from the Roland card. Parts list:

Generic AT case
350W AT PSU
Generic socket 5 mobo
Pentium 133Mhz
32mb 72-pin EDO RAM
Matrox Millenium 4MB
3Com NIC
USR 56k faxmodem (lel)
Sound Blaster 16
Roland Rap-10
2.1GB Seagate HDD
LG 12x8x32 cd burner (not actually used for burning)
3.5" floppy
Gotek floppy emu

Case/PSU could easily be swapped for modern ATX with an adapter, and a CF card w/IDE adapter could be used if you can't get ahold of a reliable HDD. I highly recommend period Matrox cards though. They're brilliant.

Just looked her up... 40,000 videotapes.
Truly a legend.

To digitize it all:
According to the article, she would record for 6 hours at a time.
6hr/tape * 40k tapes = 240k hrs of video.
It can be safely assumed that 1 hour of tape is about 1GB, so that's 240 TB.
A blu-ray DL can hold 50GB of data. That's 4,800 blu-ray disks to archive all of that.
$2/disk = $9600

So on the low end, it would cost $10k to move all of that to optical archive.
$8k if you use 6TB hard disks, but that doesn't factor in replacement drives and the actual hardware needed to run them.
