It's time to face the facts. Richard Stallman is nothing more than a whining, overly obese autistic manbaby who has not done anything beneficial for the computing OR technology world in the past 20 years. Seriously. Name something that RMS has done after 1995 besides bitching, crying, and moaning about bullshit that does not matter, or making some retarded, incomprehensible speech.

He demands that Linux be called GNU/Linux. That is fucking insane. The only reason GNU, GPL, and FSF are still a THING is because of Linus and the invention of Linux. If anything, Stallman should rename GNU to Linux/GNU, because without Linus, the GNU, GPL, and FSF would not be a thing anymore.

Stallman still has the fucking gonads to act like he's superior to everyone else. Saying shit such as "I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone" right after Steve Jobs' death. What an asshole. Stallman has not even programmed a single line of code since 2008, that was AFTER he essentially stopped in 1992.

He should be fucking grateful Linus stepped in to save his ass, and even allowing him to take partial credit for his achievements. If it wasn't for Linus, he would be nothing, he would probably be dead in a Burger King dumpster right now.

Besides, what has he ever even done? He claims to have written eMacs, but in reality he actually cloned gosmacs (the first eMacs that was made for UNIX). He didn't even write 50% of the code in eMacs.

You might say he wrote GCC and GDB, but the truth is that he initally wrote the C compiler, but now the vast majority for the same compiler is done by contributors.

He's a washed up, morbidly obese man who tries to stay relevant by having these retarded arguments that are similar to those found in the Soviet Union. Face it GNU/Freetards, Richard Stallman is a fat dickhead, and the only reason his name is still in the books is because of Linus's achievements.
>>
stallman is not a philosophically pure person. he follows his ideals when convenient, and ignores them or slightly alters them when the conflict isn't worth it.

stallman is an egoist in denial, afraid of admitting that he just wants some fucking source code instead of a world where he has to rely on other people because he knows he wouldn't get it that way.

his system has some practical merits but his attempts at creating moral justifications are completely pathetic and nonsensical. how low do you have to be to have to make up bullshit "oughts" when you can just say "it would be fucking better"?
>>
Linus writes beautiful code. He has published some side projects that he wrote all on his own and the code is just wonderful. He also lives in the real world while still maintaining his open source ideals and supporting himself through his work.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. He survives on the charity of others and speaking engagements where he spouts his insane, paranoid, philosophy. Basically he won't be happy until all the programmers are homeless hackers like him and all the companies are shut down. How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

So, in a nutshell:
He's a bird-fucking, self-absorbed, power hungry, toe jam eating pedophile that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share, who looks like he hasn't showered in years so as to create a static shield around his body to protect from aliens. He also created an OS without a kernel because he's basically Steve Jobs gone communist. Oh, and he calls himself doctor though he holds no PhD.
>>
Don't call it GNU/Linux. It gives Stallsham undue credit. He's done nothing but take credit for the work of others and has the audacity to call himself a Doctor when he couldn't even finish his Masters.

wrote emacs
Contributed to guy steele's TECO macros, later cloned gosmacs, the actual first emacs for UNIX. If stallman wrote emacs, apple is the sole creator of webkit.
wrote gcc and gdb
He wrote the C compiler initially, but the vast majority of development for other compilers and the C compiler has came from non-stallman sources.

And he hasn't programmed in years. Stallman is washed up, and his justifications for copyleft are horribly invalid nonsense that would make more sense if they were actual thinly veiled communism instead of selfish ramblings and a desire for a world that catered to his specific social class.

Without GNU linux couldn't work (at the time now we have busybox and stuff). They depend on each other.

Steve jobs was a maker of non-free software. He was saying he was glad that he was gone. He would have also been glad if steve had stopped. It doesn't matter how much code he wrote but instead how important the code he did write was.

>He should be fucking grateful Linus stepped in to save his ass, and even allowing him to take partial credit for his achievements. If it wasn't for Linus, he would be nothing, he would probably be dead in a Burger King dumpster right now.

Without GNU and the free software movement linus may not have even written linux or it may not have been free as in freedom.

he started the free software movement and without him it is very doubtful linux, firefox, vim, emacs, apache and most other non-BSD free software would exist at all.

I'm sick of Windows' shit, and also recently graduated college and am trying to get into some serious programming and development. My roommate got a Thinkpad Chromebook and runs ChromeOS alongside Lubuntu on the same kernel, he says he loves it. Doesn't miss Windows at all except for gaming.

I, however never bothered to switch BECAUSE of gaming. I've been thinking of trying to go Linux full-time for the reasons above, and just dual-boot Windoze for muh gaymen.

I'm not totally sure if I should just go all-in, but I'm a staunch utilitarian and if Linux is objectively better, I'll go for it. If that's the case, should I install Mint/Ubuntu as my primary OS on my (120GB) SSD, and just put Windows on my (1TB) HDD alongside all my game files?

I already keep all my games on the HDD anyway. But would I have to pre-partition the drive if I want to use some of it for /home or something, because of the filesystems?
>>
>>61734186
Don't use Mint, its broken and insecure trash. Use Ubuntu (which Mint is based on) and/or Debian is also a good choice.
>>
>>61734253
Which is the objectively best DE? I hear Unity actually doesn't suck anymore and is really useful in terms of the keyboard shortcuts. But Gnome probably has moar compatibility with shit right? And I've heard polarizing things about KDE.
>>
>>61734358
The best DE is the DE which suits your needs. I suggest trying the most common. The all have flaws and features. KDE is bloated, but has a nice filepicker, GNOME is going downhill since they started removing features, trying to be lightweight. I personaly like Xfce, but here you need a compositor like compton so you don't have screen tearing. Unity died and Ubuntu ships GNOME now. Mate and Cinnamon are comfy for beinners since they are a bit windowsesque.
>>
>>61734358
just use any de and if you need something, install a program that does the job
>shortcuts
i just use xbindkeys and use the same config on all my systems so the de doesn't matter
>>
>>61734407
>>61734444
Which one looks the most slick/"""minimalist""" (I hate that word). I get the feeling KDE probably has a lot of bullshit going on if you say it's bloated, and made to look like Windows.

Can you uninstall & replace the DE in any flavor of ubuntu? Or are there dependencies that go deep and make it hard to rip all that up smoothly?

Also nice quads
>>
I have Arch running on Pi Zero W and I want to add a swap file, because at any given time the memory usage exceeds 40-50%. I've never messed with swap though, so I have some questions:

Is 512MiB enough? I'd assume so, but you know...

Should I use zram/zswap? Or will that just eat up CPU and be counterproductive?

How can I set it up for the best results?
>>
>>61734505
Most minimalist while being "standard": XFCE
Most minimalist: openbox, i3
>>
>>61734505
You can replace DEs on any distro, but stuff can break when you don't know what you're doing. Switching Window Managers, like, installing i3 or openbox on Ubuntu works flawlessly. In fact you can install 1000 WMs and just switch between them before you login.

Lightweight: Xfce, OpenBox, i3, but if you want something that just works without any tinkering, use KDE. "bloat" can be one man's useless crap and other man's usefull feature.

Just try some DEs and WMs in a VM and decide what you like. Pretty much any distro is lightweight, compared to Windows.

It doesn't exists out of the box. You need to create it.
A default file is already there, which you can copy-paste.
cp config.def.h config.h

Then just run make clean install.
Also make sure to always check the shipped README or INSTALL file when compiling programs.

I think I need to try redshift again, it can do screen brightness but through the console? I never got it to respond though
>>
>>61736071
There's f.lux for loonix, but you should try redshift instead since it's free software and does pretty much the same job. There's also reshift-gtk if you need a gui in your panel but it isn't needed.
Run "man redshift" to get the flags you need, brightness can be done with -g (gamma) and the transition speed can be turned on and off (theres no option for speed but it doesn't make sense anyway).
I don't even use a config, I just have
redshift -g 0.9 -m randr -r -t 6500:5300

in my xinitrc

>dim and brighten the screen backlight
just bind xbacklight to hotkeys
>>
>>61736143

Playing around with it again now.

You use gamma for brightness? There was an actual -b brightness value from 0.1 to 1 I tried last time and it didn't work, maybe gamma will work instead.

I don't have an xinirc file yet, if I make one with only my redshift line in will it replace the actual one that is needed to start xserver?
>>
>>61736433
I don't know about you system but on debian using startx then ~/.xinitrc does replace the default action. You can use ~/.xsessionrc instead though which only gets sourced by xsession, rather than executed by startx.
>>
>>61736492
Wat

I googled and some dude gave his .xinitrc as an example and it had no xsession or startx stuff in so I just made mine this

redshift -c ~/.config/redshift.conf

For some reason -c needs an argument even though "man redshift" says it reads from that file automatically

Why does all Linux documentation contradict itself.

Anyone want to help make a new terminal based online discussion format centered around the GNU/Linux filesystem?

Thinking of making a sort of "Request based shell" (RBS) client.
Basically instead of connecting and staying connected (or timing out) like with IRC or BBS systems, this one would look and act exactly like you had a shell on the machine (so it would also retain a history of your commands) except instead of keeping a persistent connection open it only opens a connection when you actually enter a command, the server returns the output and then the connection is closed. Just like the client-server model for websites. This way you can idle all day and there is no major issue with having too many users connected at once.

It could be used for discussions by simply having a few scripts, for things such as generating append-only files as threads and formatting posts, or a script to output information like a thread watcher, etc..
Users could manage the files just like normal, upload files, modify permissions, create groups, symlinks, etc..

Hey guys. I'm the guy who tried to install ubuntu. You guys told me to check for safe boot options and then turn it off. Turns out my BIOS doesn't have that. What now? Is it okay if I use a virtual machine running linux? How much performance loss is there? I have beefy specs I think. 16 gigs of ram, i7, 750ti. Is this good enough for a virtual machine?

>>
>>61737437
It wouldn't really be a replacement for IRC though, just a totally new thing.
I would imagine it would feel more like posting on 4chan (before auto-updaters), or like checking your email, rather than using IRC. So I think the client-server model would be appropriate.
Also IRC doesn't let you build a directory structure with file uploads and the full set of permissions on said directories and files

I also think it could feel a lot like using a BBS, but let's face it BBS's are never going to make a comeback because of the huge issue with having tons of people connected at once. This is like the next best thing.

Someone else can probably tell you better than me, but they are paid developers who get money from the government which raises some questions. But maybe a bigger reason is every time I read about projects they're involved in they always come across as complete assholes who think their way is the only way and want to strong arm everyone else.
There's always incidents with things like devs forcing Linus to change things in the kernel itself or refusing to implement trivial patches to things that break other software, almost like they're trying to build a walled garden and dependence on their own circle of developers.
It always seems to trace back to redhat devs. Of course the latest buzz you've probably heard about is systemd and wouldn't you know it Poettering works for redhat.
and you don't have to be an expert to have some red flags get raised at how suspiciously quick systemd not only rose to popularity but also created a circle of dependencies that makes it almost completely impossible for any distro to use anything but systemd anymore.

Either they're really just innocent and only guilty of completely not giving a shit about anything on GNU/Linux but exactly the software they like and the way they think things should be done (a very Windows-like mentality) OR they are actively trying to build that walled garden and make everyone depend on them

Any suggestions?

You don't, you just blazingly fast type it.
>>
>>61747716
Yes, sed.
>>
>>61747747
I suggest running vimtutor to learn the basics.
If you're referring to copy-pasting from-to other applications, you're probably using a minimal vim version without clipboard compiled in. If thats the case, install a more bloated version like vim-gnome or whater is in your package manager.

ctrl+v clipboard: "+p in normal mode
alternatively, ctrl+shift+v should work, but you should use the former
x clipboard: "*p

explanation: "<key> is the combination access the register named <key>, and is vim's usual put (paste) command
assuming you have it enabled, "+ and "* are the corresponding registers reserved for your clipboards

for more information enter :help registers on your vim

I have a dell Inspiron 600m (Pentium M [email protected], 256mb RAM) running VoidLinux. Gentoo was pretty good, but certain things, like xorg, just wouldn't compile. Void is running quite smoothly, but web-browsing is a little rough. browsers like dillo and netsurf are missing key features that allow proper loading of webpages, but firefox and opera are just a little too heavy. Is there any optimizations or alternative browsers?

Hello /g/
I wanted to try out a new operating system since Windows 10 was awful and annoying so I downloaded Xubuntu on my Dell Inspiron. Now I'm a bit stuck and frankly overwhelmed. What applications should I get? I've mainly been looking for a PDF application that will let me add notes and highlight for my studies. In addition, I've read the sticky and I'm still going over the new info.
Lastly, how can I make my desktop/terminal look cool like all of you? Any help is appreciated.
>>
>>61748283

No. Every modern browser that supports HTML5 and JavaScript will run like shit, because you're looking at the same content.
You're also an idiot if you think that using VoidLinux improves your performance or that certain distributions are better for older hardware.
>>
Hi, I’m currently experiencing an issue with Gnome’s dark theme.
I currently have the latest update available for stable Arch, and I enabled both the global dark theme and the OSX Arc Shadow, but all of the extensions atop of the screen keep a semi-white theme, like in pic-related –some of the elements are readable and some absolutely not.
Does anyone know if it can be fixed and if yes, how?
>>
>>61748362
forgot the pic, kek
>>
>>61748333
im not an idiot, it's just the closest thing to arch (in my opinion) that supports x86, and gentoo compiles most packages from source, which is far slower than installing binaries. Debian wouldn't boot, ubuntu is unpleasent for my tastes. I believe voidlinux was a good choice, contrary of "hurr durr this linux r fastr than the othr one!!1!"

>OSX Arc Shadow
That's a shitty spin-off theme and it most likely doesn't keep up with the original themes fixes.
Your options are to use a different theme which works or finding out the CSS class for that thing and fixing it yourself; either within the theme or using a global override.

Not to mention that certain distrobutions do work better on older hardware. Distrobutions such as quirky(puppy), lubuntu, antix and bohdi are specifically tailored to work better on older hardware and support more drivers for old hardware, unlike debian, ubuntu, arch etc, which may not run as well, or in some cases, at all. Please don't be ignorant, educate yourself.

Disabling JavaScript won't solve anything. How do you expect him to post on here? His computer will shit the bed whenever he opens a website that has a video embedded (YouTube). It will happen regardless which browser he uses.

Browsing the internet on older computers is a pain and there is no solution. Pretentious idiots will tell you use Lynx or a similar browser, but then you miss out on 95% of the internet's content and they're hypocrites who would never go through with that.

>>

You may want to backup some of the global configs in /etc/ like your font settings or anything else you set globally.

Any version control is cool for managing dotfiles, also look into GNU stow.

For the future, make a home partition and keep all your configs managed there. Convenient when you reinstall often or switch systems.

Why not dualboot or VM with GPU passthrough?
I personally like to dualboot, that way I have one "throw away gaming OS" and one for secure serious business.

kek
>>
>>61750796
There is absolutely no point in doing that. I only want to use GuixSD to support it and get a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Dual booting just for that purpose makes no sense.

I don't mind rolling up my sleeves and doing a whole bunch of tinkering and shit to get something to work.
But once I'm done getting it working and configured right that should be it, my normal everyday routine should not involve me having to restart my machine just to switch gears

Dual booting or VM's are not clean solutions to anything.

You people are always confused about what freedom is. You literally cannot have true freedom without welcoming oppression

and if you try to get rid of it then you're just oppressing my freedom to force GNU down your throat. So are you really any better at all?

At least GNU is aware of the fact that it's an ethical movement that should benefit the users of its software rather than playing make-believe that you can just magically end up with a beautiful system designed with your needs taken to heart without having to fight off the forces that seek to twist it for their own personal gain

Kind of interesting that you rag on GNU for fighting for freedom while you're sitting here doing the exact same thing right now.
If you were truly all about letting people do whatever they want then you wouldn't give a shit what GNU was up to, neither to be a part of it, NOR to exclude it.
