If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Vega soon.

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

I've noticed stores have GPUs in stock now, just for inflated prices.

Is mining dying off a bit, and can we expect prices/stock to normalise soon?

so, thanks to the nice guys of /pcbg/ and the wiki and I finally did it, I built my own pc, I first wanted to thank everyone that helped me
everything's fine, no fuck-ups (minor nor major), and I'm pleasantly surprised of the result
only one thing: I have an SSD and an HDD mounted, I installed the os on the SSD and everything was a-ok until I noticed that the HDD won't show up from the file explorer, I checked both in the bios and in the devices settings of windows and the hard-disk seems to be there and functioning but I can't still get to use it
is there something I need to do to 'activate' it?
thanks in advance for the (further) help

i'm improving my old pc:
athlon II x3 455
sapphire hd 5570
msi 740gm-p25

got a second hand phenom x6 1090t, don't have a better gpu atm.

is it ok if i use the phenom with the other old components?
>>
>>61732907
>ok, didn't know that
Some of them do.
The Ryzen 3 1200, Ryzen 3 1300X, and Ryzen 5 1400 all come with the Wraith Stealth cooler.
The Ryzen 5 1500X, Ryzen 5 1600, and Ryzen 7 1700 all come with the Wraith Spire Cooler. The 1700's has an RGB ring exclusive to it.
The Ryzen 5 1600X, Ryzen 7 1700X, and Ryzen 7 1800X don't come with coolers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2ekQXYEbbs
>>
>>61733165
If the chipset is the same yeah...

But you already know what we're gonna say.
Get the R5 1600. Is the next Phenom. And will probably be as future proof as you feel your old athlon has been.
>>
Does Superbiiz have ridiculous shipping costs or something?
>>
Is this OK & up to date?
https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/wMgXsY/modest-gaming-build
Need in a hurry a new pc, mostly for video edit and 3d render, but as far as i know the specs for a gaming pc should be very similar.
>>
>>61732477
Man this case looks so clean. I'd totally get it if it didn't only support 2x 3.5" HDD's - Would be a lot better if it had more slots.
>>
>>61733431
Thanks anon, this is my old rig in my mom's house, which i visit twice a month and i'm not planning on upgrading the mobo.

Thing is, i'm afraid that using the 1090t along with the hd 5570 will bottleneck so hard that keep using my x3 455 would be a better option.
>>
>>61733560
Looks Good.
But you need more RAM. 16 GB is recommended minimum for video editing+ rendering.

Also, I personally recommend(and own) the R7 1700. It's worth every penny.

>>61732273
>Is mining dying off a bit, and can we expect prices/stock to normalise soon?
I wouldn't bet on it. Though apparently Vega is supposed to have great mining performance, which means mining becomes less profitable with Polaris, so that should bring the prices on mid-range cards closer to normal, at least.

>>
>>61732798
>the x series dont come with coolers
Well, the 1600x, 1700x and 1800x don't. The 1500x and 1300x do have stock coolers.
>>
>>61733560
Looks pretty solid a few things to note:

If you're looking to stick with 8gb, be sure to get a 2x4gb for dual channel it's about a 10-15% performance increase for RAM (increases RAM bandwidth capabilities)

Or do what >>61733640 said and upgrade to 16gb with 2x 8gb sticks.

Shell out a little bit more and for you 67$ you can get a 2tb Seagate Barracuda - faster read write speeds in comparison to the Hitachi - but the price for 2tb on the one you've chosen is still really good.
>>
>>61733640
Thanks! What about the GPU, do you think it's alright? or should I wait for the amd GPUs to be back in stock
>>
Does anyone know of any bracket/enclosure that will house two 2.5" drives, preferably covering both? It would hopefully look like a single 3.5" that houses two 2.5" drives. The drive cage in my case can only hold one 2.5" drive and two 3.5" drives, but I have two 2.5" drives they're both WD blues and I'd prefer them to not be seen as the blue doesn't match the a e s t h e t i c of my setup.
>>
Anyone have case recommendations that meets most/all of the following criteria?

-Mid tower, preferable no longer than ~20" length; height irrelevant
-Very easy cleaning - lots of dust filters that are easily removable. Ability to pull out bottom and/or PSU dust filter from the side or the front is a big plus.
-Tempered glass side panel - not necessary, but a nice plus.
-Noise dampening material where possible
-Hinged side panel - this sounds like a convenient feature but I could be dissuaded from it. But even if it's not hinged, easy access is a plus

I've looked at a number of cases but all are lacking in some way. The Define C with Tempered Glass looks really good but only 315mm for GPU is unfortunate.

Carbide 600C Inverse would be good if not for the flimsy plastic panel.

The Enthoo Evolv ATX could be nice, but I'm skeptical of having tempered glass side panels on both sides. The Luxe would be good but it's a full tower and bigger than I'd like. P400S could be an option here as well.
>>
>>61733759
I have a RX570, but that is for gaming porpuses. For video rebdering and such, Nvidia GPUs are recommended because of CUDA . That GPU is fine. If you can get the 6gb that would be better, but little dofference

AMD has Open CL, but CUDA is apparently more effective. So stick to that.
>>
>>61733686
So, what, should i just give up on getting an AMD GPU. Though at the rate things are going it feels like the only GPU available for my next build will be a 1050ti or 460.

Maybe i'll drop getting a free sync monitor and go for a regular one, since the g-sync premium is retarded.

cut them off or get a modular psu
>>
>>61734015
If you were planning on getting one soon, probably. Though Nvidia prices are pretty inflated as well.
>>
>>61733700
if you're worried about psu cables, first and foremost you should get a modular or semi modular psu.

but as you probably don't have one, the best you can do is fold up your unused cables and zip tie them.

I'm trying to decide between getting the G4560 or the Ryzen 3. I'm leaning towards the G4560 since I'm poverty tier, but the Ryzen 3 is only 60 more dollars. I want to game mainly, but I also will be using it for my computer science work.

Is the ryzen meme worth $60?

that's not how bottlenecking works
>>
>>61734395
>Double the cost of g4560 for 5% performance increase
>>
>>61734395
if you can ACTUALLY get a 4560 for $56 sure, go for that. Everywhere I'm seeing, the chip is closer to $80 though.
The r3 will do better if you overclock it a little, and the stock cooler is good enough for like 3.8ghz, maaaaybe 3.9. but at $56 get the pentium.
>>
>>61734450
okay. I keep hearing that the ryzen would perform better on other tasks outside of games but I wasn't sure if it was worth it. and the upgrade path
>>
>>61734492

>>
>>61734495
Ryzen 3 will even beat i5's at non-gaming tasks, and the upgrade path makes it totally worth it
>>
>>61734495
Well, you can pretty much get g4560 + a cheap MOBO for the price of an R3(assuming it actually goes for $60), so upgrade path isn't necessarily worth considering at that point.
>>
>>61734590
Dang okay. I'll probably go with that then

Otherwise no. The 1200 is where the bang/buck is at.
>>

Isn't Rocket League a bit of an outlier? Seems like they're not supporting Ryzen at all, other games that made patches for it saw huge performance increases and they're just not doing anything.
>>
If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well.

even the 1400 is stretching the budget a little bit but I wasn't sure if the extra threads would help if I was multitasking. I'd like the 1600 but it's a bit much for me. My alternative was to wait for Zen2 or whatever in 2020 and get a 6 or 8 core CPU then when I presumably have more money to work with.

I guess that's what you get for the cheapest mks. You could try to replace that switch, although it would propably be hard to find an identical one since it's not cherry or gateron. What I would suggest, is to take a switch from a key that you don't use that much, or maybe even don't use at all (like scroll lock, or pause) and swap them in place with the D switch. Of course, assuming that it's a problem with the switch itself.

What's the motherboard situation like now?

There was a lot of shit at launch. Are those same motherboards safe to buy today or is shopping for AM4 still a minefield?

E.g. logicalincrements recommend the asus x370 pro, but that one got torn apart at launch because of RAM stability issues and I can't find anything conclusive about how much it has improved since then

No and No,
your 1080TI will bottleneck your 1700X for gaming, not the other way around. Also, Vega is set to perform at ¬1080 level, so the 1080TI is more powerful than anything we'll see until the next Titan or the next generation of Nvidia gaming cards.

That's going to matter a ton as far as it's gaming worth. It would be a nice chip if it can really do 4.2ghz, ddr4 3600 (quad channel) and have all those juicy hedt features. Sure you would be indulging yourself but people spend more money on sillier things than a nice hedt computer.

Making a build for gaming, streaming, multitasking, and lifespan without upgrading.

The games I play are old MOBAs and MMOs so I'm looking for longevity over performance, as long as I get 144+fps. Not going to OC for that reason.

>>
>>61740742
Yes.
>>
>>61740749
Chassis header fan means nothing.
Just daisy chain your fans together or power them directly from the PSU.
>>
>>61740742
Make sure it's AM4 compatible or get the mounting hardware for it.
>>
>>61740749
Check the amps of the headers and the amps of the fans you intend to use, most headers can run multiple fans no problem. I've only got three headers but I've got seven fans running off them, and I'm able to set them to slow down and speed up according to my temps using SpeedFan.

Generally a 6amp header will do 2x 140mm fans, and a 12amp 4x 140mm fans, so long as you aren't doing something stupid like running 5600rpm Delta fans.
>>
>>61740763
>daisy chain
with what ? for my personal build(for this one I'm just trying to help a friend out) I used 4pin splitter, to connect 2 fans to a CPU cooler and 2 case fans in front, but I paid ~12 euros for 2 of those splitters and they were the only ones I could find locally after searching everywhere so just seems more logical to pay 10 euro extra for the motherboard that wouldn't require spending extra money to have several splitters going right through the middle of the whole build
>power them directly from the PSU
doesn't that mean no PWM control (which I guess doesn't make a difference if using 3pin fan)
>>
>>61740749
It's nice when a mobo includes more fan headers, but you can buy a molex adapter/splitter for a few bucks
>>
>>61740787
Splitters are literal pennies on ebay for a couple of them unless you are buying nice looking braided stuff.
>>
>>61740787
>PWM control
They're FANS
Even at full tilt, they won't consume more than a couple watts each
And if you're bugged about noise, you've bought shitty fans in the first place

Hi. It's >>61740850 >>61740811 guy here.

The 100R has issues. It has issues of being a sort of ghetto-ass construction.

https://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/ProductImageCompressAll1280/11-139-018-06.jpg

There you can compare the back of the 100R with the older 200R. 200R is more solid, and has the better build of the two. The 100R has the card slots sticking out to cheapen the cost of manufacturing. If you're willing to pay $43 for the 100R, possibly wait for the 200R to go on sale.

Maybe. I dunno.

>>
>>61740882
FD Define C and Mini C are half of that price, yet it's fucking great IMO, can't even imagine what magic could be put into case to make me pay 2-4 times more
>>
>>61740887
My monitor just died and I'm still sticking with 1080p. You need to drive that shit based on resolution. Going 1440p or whatever the fuck it is just means you get more pixel density in the best of cases, but you need that much more fucking power behind it. Unless you're devoted, there's no point. 1080p is a perfectly comfortable resolution until OLED comes around.
>>
>>61739665
Bump pls help?!
>>
>>61740918
Like, you can go 1440p, but you have to realize that you're not getting 60fps with that on new games unless you do like... retarded shit.

Youtube fucker who gets all his hardware for free goes on about his Double-Chainlinked Dual SLI 4x Titan X build getting fucking sub-60 FPS at 1440p and you think your $200-$300 card will drive that retardation. Maybe when things actually progress. It's enthusiast tier fagshenanigans. Be smart.
>>
>>61740882
Of all the cases I've had over the years Fractal Design R5 is by far my favorite. This is mainly because of the sound dampening material on that case and the harddrive trays with rubber pieces where you mount the harddrives. This really makes a huge difference compared to other cases I've had and have like Cooler Master HAF 912, Cooler Master N600 and so on. Not having any metal-to-metal on your hardrives makes more difference than fans if you have 4-5 of them. Also, the fans that come with it were actually quiet and great - unlike the garbage noisy fans that have come with every single Cooler Master case I've had (which is the main reason I just avoid that brand now, both cases and PSUs).
>>
>>61740935
Uh, I think you're talking about 4k, I can run 1440p just fine with a 1080 with high settings.
>>
>>61740918
>>61740935
For resolution increase, going from 1080p requires 2 things. 2. 2 big things.

1. OLED.

2. Panel manufacturers not being lazy, cheap mongoloids putting forward policies of things being acceptably terrible because they can't sort their fucking shit out. When 50% of panels come out with defects, it's fucking pointless.
>>
>>61740918
>>61740947
Well I personally upgraded to a 1440p IPS 24" monitor from my old ass 1680x1050 20 or so inch TN panel and I love it, the pixel density, the size of how much shit I can fit in it and I can still run games at decent graphical settings on good framerates with my RX 480 8gb, hell I played DOOM at >60fps on everything maxed, so I'm pretty happy with my choice
>>
>>61740970
It may just be me being an old, cheap, frustrated asshole. I've heard really bad things about 1440p IPS panels.

I need a new monitor but can't seem to buy one that isn't fucked up in some way.

>>

>>
>>61740918
1080p looks like roasted asshole compared to 1440p, and 1440p has been easy as fuck to drive in most games since the GTX 780 dropped like three years ago. Even a 7970 will do 1440p just fine if you aren't looking to push mega high settings. It's not 2010 anymore.

You niggers need to realise that higher resolutions makes every game look better, 1440p medium>1080p ultra all day every day.
>>
>>61740985
Oh. OLED suffers from burn-in too? Well, fuck. Fuck that, then. 2 things.

1. ???

2. Panel manufacturers not being retarded motherfuckers. See previous 2 things.

Can we just bring back CRTs?
>>
Is it possible/economically viable to build a computer about the size of a steambox? Most of the mini itx cases I can find still take up a good bit of space
>>
>>61740986
It uses a lot of power and the reference design is a blower cooler. If you don't give a shit about noise go right ahead and buy it, if you do run right the fuck away. I bet the air cooled Vega 64 will be louder than a reference design 7970 Ghz edition.

350W TDP and a dual slot blower design is going to be loud as fuck.

What else suffers from burn-in ? there's aren't any plasma monitors afaik and OLED only drawback is the fucking burn-in

Like I said, if you don't really care about noise just go right ahead and buy it, if you do then avoid. Look at what happened the last time AMD put a blower on a 300W card. I really doubt aftermarket cards will have better longevity or clock much higher as that's just the way the industry is going.

My current (and first) PC is full atx and even that gets too hot and loud, but I didn't really know what I was doing when I built it so it's not really optimal for coolness and good airflow.

I've been thinking about microatx for my next PC but the only thing stopping me is that I don't want it to get even hotter (and thus louder) from poor internal temps. Should I even be looking at microatx or just stick with full size? Budget's not really the concern here ($250 set aside for mobo+case), so this is literally my only concern.

Please advise me lads

not sure where the heat is coming from, it's ~90 F where I live and I don't have AC but my room only gets to about 70 at the hottest since it's shaded by trees. This.

Also, i have almost same trouble w E5-2640v2 and Arctic Alpine 20+ CO. But it's just because I forgot to remove old termal compound (came from HP server within the CPU), which are hardened to concrete state.
>>

>>
>>61741316
>Just having qbittorrent running makes the fans go nuts
That's CPU load, to my knowledge the 8320 has one of those dogshit prebuilt style tiny aircoolers with a tiny fan that spins stupidly fast. Throw it in the bin and replace it with something like Hyper 212 and it should be pretty much silent by comparison.

Your GPU doesn't have the best cooler in the world on it but it should be perfectly fine as its not like a 280 uses a whole bunch of power.
>>
>>61741396
Oh please
I've got a Phenom II X4 with qBittorrent downloading three things, a YouTube video running at 1080, and a bajillion other browser tabs open, and my crappy stock cooler isn't "going nuts"

>>
>>61741396
In fact, 7970/280/280x with some non-native coolers (Gelid Icyvision Rev2, Arctic Accelero) are relatively quiet and cool (~62-64 celsius at full load). But their stock coolers are bullshit.
>>
>>61741387
>>61741396
thanks, I might try this before buying new components, but ultimately I plan on upgrading to ryzen soon anyway. The OP says stock coolers are pretty good for them, but would a >$30 cooler be critical if I went microATX?
>>
>>61741450
The stock cooler is better than anything you can find below the price of a 212
>>
>>61741442
Not everyones idea of quiet is the same, nigger, and swapping out a better cooler will 100% make it quieter.
>>
>>61741450
Case volume does not affect cooling
>>
>>61741450
Also check your temps and that you don't have a retarded fan curve set up, there's a chance your motherboard is sending the fans to go crazy for no reason. You can use SpeedFan to set up a custom curve.
>>
>>61741488
wouldn't it get more hot if everything's denser, meaning more cooling and thus louder fans?

>Cooler Master V Series, Fully modular cable design, 80 PLUS Gold certified 550 W, (540W on +12Y, 45A) RS550-AFBAG1-EU, 3 years warranty, 108 euros, lowest warranty, almost highest price
>Corsair Power Supply TX550M, 550W, 80 Plus® Gold, Semi-Modular, 120mm CP-9020133-EU, 5 year warranty, 76 euros
>PSU Corsair RMx Series RM550x 550W, 80 PLUS Gold, Fully modular, 135mm CP-9020090-EU, 10 year warranty, 100 euros, longest warranty, by whole 2x
>>
>>61741509
They are all fine, personally would get the Seasonic G550 as there's no need to spend a silly amount of money an a 500W PSU. Seasonic's RMA process is also pretty great, it's return to base and you'll get a brand new one back in less than a week instead of a refurb. You don't really need modular on a 500W PSU as chances are you'll be using all the cables anyway.

>t. destroyed my seasonic psu by using components that drew more power than it could deliver
>>
>>61741499
Your components will generate the same amount of heat and that heat will require the same airflow to dissipate. First law

ITX is different because they often have retarded design, but any standard tower mATX will perform identically to any standard tower ATX if you use the same cooling

Only thing to keep in mind is the ATX tower may support more 140mm fans, giving better acoustics, but again, that's not the volume itself

Corsair is fully modular, while Seasonic is semi-modular(desu no difference at all), Corsair has a bigger fan, is a little bigger and has 2 times the warranty time, while being ~30 euros more expensive

Not going to happen unless you've got parts you can reuse, or you're open to going used.

That would increase cost.

Honestly though it depends what games you're playing and how much you care about it being 60FPS at all times. I was playing some recent driving games (dirty rally, p-cars, FH3) on a 4K TV a few days ago and it ran them just fine at ultra on a 980Ti, you can get one used for like 250 quid or less.

Probably wouldn't even need to turn the settings down. My 1080Ti runs a lot of games at 5120x2880 on ultra/60 no problem, so a 1080 at 4K should be plenty. Check some reviews yourself and decide if performance is adequate for what you want.

>>

That was kind of my reasoning.
>>

1200 is for Babby's First Computer
If you can't commit the $$ to go above Ryzen 3 then at least get a 1300X

Fuck, my R9 380 died on me. Need a budget range GPU, was thinking of 1050 TI, it seems to outpeform 380 on most benchmarks. What's your opinion?
>>
>>61742335
it won't blow you away, but it's a good card for the price
>>
How do I get a reasonably priced GPU without having to murder all the cryptochads?
>>
>>61742453
you don't
>>
>>61742484
I'll be getting my hammer then, I suppose.
>>
>>61742500
catch me if you can, I'm behind seven 580s
>>
I think I want to start using ceph and other such toys of the modern brave new cloud world.

What I'm wondering about is if AMD withheld any important virtualization/server features other than multi-CPU support from Ryzen (1700 is what I'm looking at) to put them in Epyc.
>>
>>61742527
I don't know what 580s are, but I have a feeling they won't shield your ass for long once I get a'hammerin'.

He means an AMD Radeon RX 580. It's their mid-range GPU. prices are sky-high at the moment because of crypto-currency miners

What i should know before i buy a mobo? I have 2 DDR3 memory and a AM3+ processor.
I will have a problem if i buy the cheapest one? What's the most important thing to know before i buy?
This is the mobo i have right now. She's good?
>>
>>61743766

If you already have a Mobo why do you need to buy another one?
>>
>>61743804
A guy that lives next to me was upgrading his computer and gave this mobo to me. The PCI-E slot is burned inside and the thing that keep the videocard in the right position is broken. I need to put a piece of wood to keep the videocard in the right place, otherwise my computer restarts.

That's an interesting and pretty case, don't think I've seen that one.
What would be the practicality of having the compartment at the top and vents on the other side?

The 1300x is 20 dollars more + a CPU cooler. There is no reason to buy extra CPU power you won't use when that money could potential go to your next CPU upgrade.

What processor? I'm assuming one of the FX chips
