Posted in last bread but it was mostly dead. I decided to do a "master chief themed" Halo build
>GH60 Satan PCB w/ breathing LED support $30
>Tai-Hao Green ABS doubleshot set $35
>Orange anodized aluminum plate with stabilizers $23
>Black machined aluminum case $55
>bag of 3mm diffused Amber LEDs $6
>Gateron browns $30
>Orange curly USB cable $10
$183 total this will be my first actual build, since my ultrameme planck is taking literally 5 months to get here from assdrop. Feedback?

I'm pretty much sold on this keyboard, the only issue is that I'll have to change a bunch of keycaps to have it in italian: I learn these keycaps are pad printed PBT, and I was wondering if I'll be able to find the keycaps I need (or even full sets) of comparable quality for reasonable prices.

>>61720990
>using tactile cherry switches
>>61720937
I emailed Matias a while back about making some blue clones in their original design.
This was the reply.
>>61721013
Unlike those lazy Unicomp fuckers, Matias is actually improving their products. About a year ago they updated their tooling to double the life cycle of their switches recently they made some improvements fixing the horrendous key chatter problems, they also have plans to upgrade their keyboards with PBT keycaps so you no longer have to scavenge for old dell and apple keyboards (production starts in a couple months), not to mention the new keyboard designs they are coming up with are ditching that terrible glossy plastic case. Meanwhile Unicomp has made their keyboards worse, then proceeded to do jack shit and just cruise on the almost 40 year legacy of buckling springs. Matias still has some problems like a lack of switch variety, as well as build quality and QC that still isn't on par with gateron or cherry, but they are making improvements. They just take some time.
>>61721117
Now KBP just needs to get on the fucking ball with their QC.
>>61721013
So spam matias with blue skcm requests?
Got it.
>>61721153
Don't worry there is a fix. Go onto their facebook page then download the latest firmware for the matias V60 keyboard. Don't worry if you have a V80 it still works. One of the advantages of ALPS switches is that they can be opened up without desoldering, so open the switch and clean the lube, then re lube them. Normal matias switches don't actually come with lube, but KBP decided it was a good idea anyway. While you're at replace the top housings with the newer designs from matias if your keyboard has the old ones (chances are it does)
>>61720969
I don't want a overbuilt clone of a keyboard of bank equipment. I just want the tech of the buckling spring massified into quality chink keyboards.
>>61721117
Doesn't anyone know some mafioso in Kentucky to force the idiot in charge of Unicomp to sell their tooling and rights to gateron?

What's the deal with Romer G switches?
Why does /mkg/ hate them?
>>61721753
They did, but if you're too lazy to desolder and resolder every switch switching the housings is a quick and easy fix. I'd just get the new keyboards coming out next year tho

>I was wondering if I'll be able to find the keycaps I need
No. You won't. I know this is not the answer you're looking for. I'm just saying it like it is, there's no more hope for you getting Italian keycaps than there is for me getting keycaps for a nordic ISO layout.
>>61718144
As for the keyboard you're considering, I'd think about it. It's got the ISO enter key and the small shift key on the left with a key between shift and Z, so it's got that going for it - but del/ins/pgup/pgdn on the top of the number pad and no dedicated home/end? And the non-standard bottom row? I know I couldn't use that thing.
RGB is overrated.
>>61715280
Hello guys, my first post here, so let's hope this goes well ;)
Here it is:
It only cost me 8£ brand new. Why is it good you ask? I shall tell you.
Well, first of all: this keyboard is from Logitech, which is undoubtedly the best keyboard manufacturer today.
It is a rather common keyboard, yes; but because it is a Logitech, somehow it doesn't feel cheap. It's like the brand itself makes a crappy keyboard turn into a great one. I don't know, Logitech has always made me feel comfortable with cheaper products.
The keys are superbly well distributed, and your fingers won't touch the surrounding keys like some other ones I've tried. The keys are also not very soft, nor very hard to press down on. You know, this keyboard makes it just right, so that you can actually take advantage of the impulse that the rebounding keys give you.
This keyboard makes you feel like gravity is actually working WITH you, rather that against you.
Another thing I absolutely love about it, is the space bar. It is just the right size, and not too small or too big like on some other crappy keyboards from other manufacturers. The space bar is the most balanced key in the whole keyboard, it sits right at the center, and you can actually use it without looking at the keyboard. I mean, that's just brilliant design.
It's an USB keyboard. This makes it perfect for use with modern computers, and even laptops and netbooks. No more using that old crappy PS/2 port. We're in 2017, people.
I could be here all day, but in the end, I just wanted to share with you my experience with this marvelous piece of peripheral engineering.
I recommend this keyboard to anyone.
>>61723101
He says, to a community of people that hate RGB.
>>61722772
>I'm an autistic virgin so in my spare time I carefully plug in my heaphones into my iPod touch while ensuring that the current song is socially acceptable, and then pause it and spend hours placing it gently upon a pink and cyan mechanical keyboard in the desperate hope that my most photogenic positioning possible garners me replies on a honduran underwater basket weaving and spelunking image board
Honestly, kys
>>61723122
>Logitech
The Logitech K350 is the single worst keyboard that I've used and I've used many keyboards in my time. It's just horrible, just like all the newer Logitech keyboards are.
Why you're cut'n'paste spamming that piece of wall text every single day is beyond me. Anyone who's ever tried a Logitech keyboard made the last 5 years already know it's pure garbage.
>>61723156

I guess that dust goes into those idiotic small holes when I dust it or something.
Anyway, it's a piece of trash - just like all newer Logitech keyboards.

There's a PBT version, but that's the ABS version. Even the ABS version is better than anything Corsair has to offer though. And that price isn't too terrible; with a set of blank EnjoyPBT keys, it'll still be $110, and it'd be way better than most keyboards at that price.

As you can see in the picture, the top row in orange has minor differences that don't really make a difference, and the fourth row has a few keys with different symbols that might cause some discomfort, however the keys I've outlined in red are the ones that cause the most problems: in italian they're pretty much needed to write common use words.

which are a bigger meme, topre or buckling spring?
>>61727188
Topre. At least buckling spring membranes are reasonably priced.
>>61727104
Quick question, why do you care about legends so much? I think it's pretty clear that you won't be able to find what you want at a reasonable price point.
If you've got muscle memory like you're saying you do, then either ignore the legends or get blanks.
>>61727175

And if you're on your pc in a dark room you're probably watching something and don't want or need glow on your desk
i think it's hilarious how people post their guns along with their ~mechanical~ keyboards
>>61725006

>>61727338
It's just fun, man. Every time I return to my desk and see that glow, it feels me with a tiny sliver of glee, just enough to make me smile a couple centimeters. That's enough for me.
>>61727244
Because I do. Personally I'm not interested that much about the aesthetic of my keyboard, as for instance many in this general are, but I care about legends being correct. Call it customization, call it autism, it is what it is.
>>61727407
I wouldn't buy them though. First and foremost because they ship from the States at criminal rates (60$ just for the shipping), and then my package would hit the italian custom where in the best case scenario I would just have to pay 22% VAT on the total of what I've paid (meaning product plus shipping), plus custom fees, and in the worst case scenario, the package gets bogged down and I'll receive it in the year twothousandandnever. Secondly because their products look really cheaply made.
In the current situation I'm really torn between the Leopold FC980M in UK ISO layout and the Filco Majestouch 2 in IT ISO layout (still have to decide what switch).
>>61727578
have you used any switch before?
>>61727738
No, today, in the late afternoon I was thinking about going in a PC store and see if they have any mechanical keyboard to try different switches.
>>61727578
International DSA keycaps might be your best option then.
I bought a motospeed inflictor ck104 and bought my own keycaps and all of a sudden after like 2 months the D key stops working. Fo r example. I could be holding down D and it will stop for like 1 whole second periodically. So I could be typing a message and half of my sentence will have no D's in it. Anyone got any ideas in how to fix? I checked my keys and they were clean and there is a tiny bit of plastic that shouldn't be affecting it all.

if you really want the black alps just buy a couple Dell AT101's for cheap, salvage the working switches and build an ISO keyboard yourself with them, alternatively if you're lucky you can find them new in box
>>61728623
the same way you found your way from 9gag to all the way over here
>>61728420
You dye them yourself
>>61728718
Matias makes tactile clones of alps switches.
>>61728894
So I've heard. Not too sure how expensive they are in comparison to cherry switches
>>61728923
They cost about the same. There isn't the same variety as cherry, but they introduce new switches as they become more popular
Is massdrop the only place that has the Mistel Barocco with silent red switches? I've looked everywhere, and most places just stock the usual red, black, brown, blue plus sometimes clear, silver and nature white.
>>61728923
They're typically cheaper than Cherry, and about the same as Gateron. $50 for a box of 200 direct from Matias.
What do alps/matias switches feel like? I've only tried Cherry MX reds, browns, and blues so far.
>>61729222
checked
alps feel pretty damn good, haven't tried matias switches
>>61727377
Are you kidding me? It feels so much fucking better than plate mounted. I sold my realforce a long time ago since it was such a disappointment compared to my hhkbs.
>>61729222
Complicated alps > matias > simplified alps
I'd make an exception for linear matias switches as they feel much better then the older ones.
Alps vs matias, objective comparison please
>>61729648
90% of the time Matias is better simply because its newer and well built. There are a few exceptions like complicated blues and whites, but those keyboards are so old that you'd find other problems like blown resistors and leaky capacitors. You're better of salvaging the switches and using them in a newer keyboard
>>61722772

Is it bad enough that out of the four Model M's I chose, I got a Lexmark series?
It still feels crisp as nails, and the drainage holes are worth it.

89 eur is fair especially since novatouch is rare and overpriced elsewhere. if he must have the italian layout and if he's ok with topre this is actually a good option
>>61732013
I actually never had a mechanical keyboard, and have no idea how the different switches behave under the fingers.
I don't like TKL, because I actually use often the numpad, that's why I wanted the Leopold FC980M. Now I just have to choose between the Filco Majestouch 2 and the already mentioned Leopold: I just have to figure out what I care the most between the italian layout and a more compact keyboard but with non-italian (although still ISO) layout.
In both cases the switches I can choose are Cherry MX Red, Brown, and Blue.
Ann/Anne Pro or Tada68?

i just got a leopold fc750r and i have to thank you guys. this really is the most premium experience i've had with a board yet and i love everything about it.

>>61732296

So I was just walking around Wal-Mart passing the time and I happened across the clearance section with 2 Logitech LG710+ Blue keyboards for $50 each. I looked them up and saw they were usually $100 each so I bought them. Never used it before so I was wondering
Was this a good deal? Is the keyboard good quality?
>>61733229

Also by navigating a bit I've found out they sell just the caps in ISO-IT. They would end up costing me 65€ with shipping, but after all that's what I was looking for. So now the choice is between a 135€+65€ 96 keys Leopold+Varmilo caps, or a 150€ 100% Varmilo.
Anyway thank you so much anon for your help.
after around 40k in mkb purchases I've finally settled on gateron reds as the linear masterrace switch. AMA
>>61734832
probably not. i'd guess linears with o-rings/never bottoming out or matias quiet switches would be quieter

have you tried any of the retooled linears from cherry and if so how do they feel compared to gat linears?
>>61727813

>>61734990
yes I have and they feel more consistent than old cherries but not like liquid smooth like gaterons. I'd say that retooled linears are about gateron-level, up to preference, but not old ones. Also, I think gaterons take o-rings better if you're into that

That uses ADB not PS/2 cause apple have to have proprietary ports. You need a $40 adapter that isn't made anymore. Or you can build one yourself from the many guides on deskthority and geekhack
>>61734935
overall build quality is pretty decent for all of them. filco being the "classic" that everyone loves.
one thing that you do have to note is that the leopold has a non-standard bottom row and a small right shift. I don't think these keys are covered in varmilo's keysets.
>>61734990

>>61735386
i'm not sure about matias quiets with o-rings but i've heard a lot about people installing dental bands, flattened landing pads, or hyperspheres in topres making them even more quiet than they already are
>>61735321
>I don't think these keys are covered in varmilo's keysets.
I see thanks. I've also noticed that Varmilo ships from China, which is VERY bad news for me. I'm leaning more and more towards Filco.

>>61736004

>>61735386
Matias quiet click has internal dampening for down and upstrokes, so it shouldn't need anything else. KBDFans sells rings similar to hyperspheres to silence topre.
>>61735807
It would cost me roughly 10~15€. Also, I think pressing the button with one finger isn't really telling of the typing experience in various situations. Today I've found a store in my town that had an Asus gaming mechanical keyboard exposed, but it was closed so I couldn't try it.
For years now I've used a OEM HP keyboard -pic related- where, as you press the key, force immediately builds up with very little travel, until it "breaks" and the counteracting force drops, and since you can't really stop your finger, you more or less bottom it out (I actually want to change keyboard because sometimes it doesn't register the keypress unless I press really hard while bottoming the key). It surely isn't a mechanical keyboard, but the profile is like the one of a Cherry MX Brown
>>61736230
>but the profile is like the one of a Cherry MX Brown
I mean qualitatively: ideally, if I had to describe the sensation I'd draw a similar graph.
>>61736230
>I think pressing the button with one finger isn't really telling of the typing experience
you're right but it is better than going in blind. perhaps going to that store on an open day would be more helpful. i personally think blues feel the best out of the four choices you have. they have the most tactility, but the sound is really annoying. reds are nice but easy to mis-type on, though you'll get used to it. i would describe them as soft but obviously not squishy like a rubber dome. in the end, if you really can't decide, just get browns. they don't have much going for them and I personally dislike them but it's the "safe" choice. there's a lot of hate for browns from people here but I've seen a lot of people happy with them for their first mechanical keyboard. any one of the four choices will certainly be better than your current keyboard.

What would you guys say the absolute fastest switches are? Like 4 key presses per second fast. Keyboard recommendations are appreciated, the game that I'm getting it for is a rhythm game called osu!. I think the switches just have to be really light and smooth but also springy enough at the same time. No tactile bump required. Budget is like 150 USD I guess or like 200 CDN
Sup guys. Just got my Varmillo VB7MT in today and I can't get it to pair with my computer. Anyone have this board? I haven't found anyone else with this problem.. the board works fine on my laptop with built in connectivity but not on my pc with a plugable bluetooth dongle.

The wait for chink shit always kills me
>>61739661
You have to know what cheap switch get.
For instance, outemus are inconsistent and sometimes a key requires less or more force to be actuated.
Gaterons, for example, are cheap compared to cherry, but they are better, so isn't the problem with cheapness per se.
A CK104 has outemus and has awful ABS keycaps.

For smooth you'll want linear (or light tactile bump), and with a low actuation force since you'll be pressing it like thousands of times an hour if you're play osu. At < 80g of force, there's really no difference in the speed you could press, just the amount of relative comfort. If anything the delay on the keyboard would be more important. Personally, by the way, I would want clicky since I'd prefer auditory feedback when playing a rhythm game.
Also note that ultra-lightweight switches are really bad for typing if you're a heavy-handed typist like me, since you could literally just rest your palm taking a drink and see a string of characters fucking up your flow.
Here's a great resource going over the basics of key switches, and the next video in the playlist is a good overview of the major manufacturers of switches: https://youtu.be/bG0DwHniqu8?list=PL285ATFsHGY8XWiXGt8mtc4gySLYfPkFS
