actually I made the thread because the old one died and I wanted to reply to the guy who hauled a lot of old hardware and asked about this laptop

first thing I found was this site

I don't read russki, but even with google translate it doesn't say much
notice it doesn't have a brand on it
>>

the russki pic did help me with the FCC ID

next find was this album

which led me to this thread
https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagecomputing/comments/5770aw/what_kind_of_computer_it_his_and_what_can_i_do/
which talks about white label systems (basically generic manufactured laptops which any company could stick a brand or sticker on)
one of the links leads to a pic of similar laptop with IPC brand on it (the owner of mediamagic)
>>
>>61711167
finally last post in that thread talks about austin computer systems, and a little search on PC magazine archives found this ad
>>
>>61711196
for reference: there was another thread in /g/ in 2014 about a similar laptop

wow thanks a lot, this could be very helpful.
what's kinda nuts is that I also got this one from a savers and it's definitely the same model as here>>61711167, but mine has a different power supply. I'm guessing it's a replacement.
I'm also guessing the floppy noise is from the rails not greased and it's jammed. but now I'm going to have to get it working, that seems to be a common problem now with these older drives.

Id pay more for something in that kind of condition. Based on the description, that's someone who knows what they're doing and knows what they have. I'd pay easy 400-500 bucks for something in that good shape.
>>
>>61713202
Ahahaha. Let's inflate the prices!
No.

It's in good shape, that's why it's even worth anything over 200 bucks.
It's nowhere a rare system either nor does it actually include any rare hardware, like accelerators, etc, or modern expensive hardware like SCSI2SD adapters.

>Based on the description, that's someone who knows what they're doing and knows what they have.
Collectors usually sell for very cheap though.
Also no, the person selling seems to know enough, the description is a literar sales pitch to make you want to buy it.
>>
>>61713330
To add to this.
It is museum quality, it doesn't mean jack shit for a hobbyist.

Sure, I won't mind it going for 500 bucks for a corporate sponsored museum. I've sold my fair share of items to museums like that for ridiculous prices. In those contexts it's just a corporate transaction.

I acquired an original IBM PC a while back, and it has one of these memory expansion cards that have a battery to save the system date (pic related). Unfortunately, I couldn't find much information on this card online by just searching the FCC ID. Are there any generic drivers for these types of cards that I can use, or do I have to find the one meant specifically for this card? The FCC ID is E5Y6L9MF100 if that matters. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm still really new to this whole /retro/ thing.
>>
>>61713786
It's mostly jumpers that need to be configured and then any memory manager should pick it up as EMS memory.
But this card is probably just convencional memory. Doesn't the amount of conventional memory change with and without it?

Sorry, I haven't dealt with the memory expansions for those machines, I just expanded board memory or got a board with more memory options.
>>
>>61713786
Also be sure to change the battery if it isn't already.
>>
>>61713854
>pick it up as EMS memory.
A bit late at the game I see?

EMS was for EMS boards. This is a backfill board for a 256k system to bring it to 640k. All real memory, not EMS.

Looks like this board is a Memory/Clock/Dual Serial and paralell multi function card.

Drivers for it, are not generic, but it may be compatible with other cards, so start with AST or some such, and work backwards in terms of popularity.

The memory should work right off the bat, the comm ports, and paralell port should also. The clock is the hard part.

( Hint, the light blue rocker panels are the beginning memory address: Something like: 5000x. A000 is the top 64k, and B000 begins expansion memory ( 640k limit ).

8 mins 59 seconds. Hmm..

conventional memory. you must have been there. Intel called it Real memory vs expanded (EMS ) or expanded ( >1Mb on a 286 )

There may be a generic DOS driver for a clock chip on one of the software archives.
>>
>>61714236
>you must have been there
Nah. Just interested.

Convencional was up to 640KB.
Upper (UMA) was between 640KB-1024KB.
EMS was bank switched inside UMB memory. (Last version supported up to 32MB.)
XMS was anything over 1024KB.

Just some trivia for the thread.

I've been thinking about the post some anon made in the previous thread about Unix clones on Z80 based home computers here >>61703385. How useful would a true multitasking OS really be on older home computers vs a single-tasking OS where the user could pause programs and page them out of memory manually?
>>
>>61719348
It would be slow, but even slow is better than having to close and reset to switch between programs. In that sense, it would be useful.
Think about having different spreadsheets and text documents or maybe a database open at once. Back in the day it would have been extremely productive.

I figure that both a true multitasking and a theoretical single-tasking OS with user controlled pausing of programs and swapping them out of memory instead of just closing them would be able to achieve that as, unless you're using a GUI or a terminal multiplexer, you're only going to have one program on the screen at a time. Also, the user controlled swapping would save processor cycles vs true multitasking (which requires swapping anyways on those systems) and would allow for the use of a slower storage device than a hard drive since the machine wouldn't need to be constantly swapping between every program you have running but aren't actually using at the time. I'm just curious if there's software that I'm forgetting about that would be beneficial to be able to have running in the background on those machines and justify having true multitasking.

>>61719609
>Also I see IC's, kinda ruins it
They're kind of necessary if you want any decent amount of RAM that wouldn't take up more room than that processor (unless there's a guide out there on how to make your own core memory).

In those machines, no, not really. My only argument siding with true multitasking was having work open and switching between it without having to save it and manually unload a program and load another.

>(unless there's a guide out there on how to make your own core memory).

I think it's pretty well documented, that would be a nice idea for him to try.

Did you know they used grannies to make core memory back in the day? Because they where good with such work.

I wonder how possible it would be to make a relay 8088 and have it be able to connect to the socket in an IBM 5055. From the looks of it you would need about 29,000 relays though, maybe that will be the next project for this guy

>having work open and switching between it without having to save it and manually unload a program and load another.
What I was thinking with user controlled swapping was that on pressing a hotkey the chunk of RAM the program you're currently running is in would be saved to the disk and the saved chunk of RAM from the command line or other program you were wanting to switch over to that was previously running would then be loaded from the disk back into RAM. As opposed to what you would normally expect when running a traditional single-tasking OS like DOS where you'd have to save your work and actually terminate the program to open something else, or what you'd expect from a multitasking OS where the programs you have open will still be running in the background and may actually be doing something.
>>
>>61719962
Yeah, I got it now, but single-tasking OS still needs to save and terminate, like GEOS, it does not swap the whole program onto disk.
The theoretical single-tasking OS you describe would be probably the best of both worlds though.
>>
Awesome
>>
>>61719962
>>61720020
There's not really much such a machine would do that would need it to run something in the background that you already can't have with hardware, like a network controller sending keep alive packages.

well, I've learned something today!
>>
>>61720093
Awesome.

Proper retr0bright takes time tough, sometimes you need to do it a few time to be perfect. Also after you do it, keep it away from the sun, AWAY, not like in a room with the window on the other side of the room, but in a room with the window covered or no window at all. They will go easily yellow again if left at the mercy of UV light.
>>
>>61720020
>but single-tasking OS still needs to save and terminate
I figure the OS I described would still be considered single-tasking because it's still only capable of running a single task at any time.

>>61720048
I wonder why that was never done then. Having that ability in DOS back in the day would have been really nice and the disk space overhead doesn't seem like it would be too bad if you didn't use the shit out of it or change disks without thinking (as you could end up with the process you're trying to change back to not being there or overwriting a different process). Come to think of it, maybe the chance for the user to fuck it up horribly was why it was never done.
>>
>>61720156
>I figure the OS I described would still be considered single-tasking because it's still only capable of running a single task at any time.
Basically it would be multi tasking though, it just wouldn't have background tasking, big difference being the program isn't started up from zero again but for a cached file from the hard drive.

>I wonder why that was never done then.
DOS actually did that.
There where versions of DOS that could switch between different virtual screens of DOS or have several DOS applications open at once and switch between them, they directly swapped to disk also. It never really took off though, I think one commercial release exists.

I have an old Toshiba Tecra laptop with Windows 98 that's just booted itself automatically twice, despite being closed.
Any idea why it might be doing that? The first time I thought something might've just pushed the power button, but after shutting it down and moving the little power-button guard over it, it booted again about 10 minutes later.

Can't tell if this is some kind of feature that the last owner didn't disable, some kind of damage to the power button wiring internally, or what. Surprisingly the battery still works despite it's age, although that rather irritatingly means finding a safe place to store it if there's no software solution (some Windows option I've forgotten about, for example.)
Pic (for ants) related is the same model.

DOS was behind tough, when compared to MacOS, AmigaOS and UNIX (and more) that had multitasking in the 80's already.
>>
>>61719958
I think timing would be the problem.
I've seen a 6510 like that but you couldn't use it in a real C64 because it ran way, way slower because it's size.
Relays just aren't as fast.

Probably possible if you'd do a new machine from ground up, but it would still be slowwww.

Anyone else hate LGR and youtubers like that?

>these things are super expensive
>these things are like 80 bucks
>if you're going to get one, it's like 70-100 bucks
>this one I got for 300 bucks

>tfw you can literally see ebay prices change after the video
>>

OMG if you have isos for stuff like that please please share!
>>
>>61721084
Yes and no. I really like LGR and techmoan's well edited videos because it gives insight to things i never done since i was too young at the time, like building a 486 rig. However, like you said, it does drive prices up after they make a video on a certain subject. Like techmoans Sony TC-D5 review probably drove prices up.
>>
>>61721212

https://archive.org/details/microsoft-dinosaurs
>>
>>61721223
Yes, I like LGR and techmoan too, for the videos, but I hate the fact that they have to talk prices, why?
First, spoonfeeding like that, people who actually don't care enough to find out themselves are probably going to buy something.
Second, everyone could check themselves, but advertising prices like that, you can be sure nobody is going to sell cheap anymore.
>>
>>61721243
This.
It's fucking amazing.
>>
>>61721084

Do they really do that? I sometimes watch his videos and I haven't noticed it. The Ebay prices of random retro junk have been high for as long as I can remember.
>>
>>61721344
Yes, there's several videos, mostly those where he does some project himself, like the 486 build or EGA upgrade, etc.

I remember a time when eBay prices where fucking nothing. It wasn't THAT long ago when you could get something like Macintosh Classic, Amiga 600 or Apple IIe for $30 on ebay. With random cards like Sound Blaster AWE being maybe 8 bucks usually.
>>
>>61721247
It be fun if you could pull ebay statistics and analytics to see if the prices spiked
>>61721344
In LGRs Unisys CWD-4002 and Proxim RangeLAN2 videos he mentions that they are fairly cheap. After the video I checked up on ebay, and the ones that where there where $1K+.

It looks like Watt32 (http://watt-32.net/) has a VNC client, so it should be possible to use a DOS machine for serious work.
>>
>>61720308
But if we're going to be fair, here. DOS was never built to be a modern, graphical multi-tasking system on 68000 machines or a time-sharing system for high end minicomputers, it's apples to oranges to look at it that way. Plus, we're forgetting about the likes of Windows, Concurrent DOS, and all kinds of other extensions that "modernized" the operating system and brought it back up to speed with its newer counterparts.
>>
>>61721084
8-Bit Guy fucked up MT-32 prices. Last year they were $60. Now you're lucky to get one for twice that.

Thankfully Munt exists, is basically perfect, and can be hooked up to an MPU-401 compatible card and be used on real hardware.
>>
>>61721926
This isn't an excuse, remember DOS and Windows where basically the same shit back then. DOS was also born a little before the other two.
If DOS is too specific, then say Microsoft's operating system.

Windows was just a "shell", all its "programs" it could multitask with where part of that shell. Normally programs didn't multitask inside Windows either, kind of like GEOS or GEM.
>>
>>61721926
>apples to oranges
all three, dos/windows, macos and amigaos where consumer microcomputer microcomputer operating systems, there are no apples or oranges
>>
>>61721988
>This isn't an excuse
I don't understand what exactly you're expecting from an operating system built from the ground up to be a CP/M clone.
>Windows was just a "shell", all its "programs" it could multitask with where part of that shell.
1.x had no problem multitasking with some well-behaved DOS programs and software that supported it outright, and 2.x added real multitasking to the mix when the 386 finally came along.

>>61722150
You are trying to excuse DOS for being "shit" (compared to other things on the market) just because it was DOS. Don't, there's no need.
DOS and PC's in the 80's where glorified typewriters and calculators. They didn't even need that shit for it to sell. That's all.
>>
>>61722150
>2.x added real multitasking to the mix when the 386 finally came along.
2.x came out in late 87' that's 2 years after 386 came out

>>
>>61722306
I mean, we don't really disagree here. All I'm saying is that it's not fair to shit on something for losing a race it never participated in, it's like shitting on an Atari because Apollo made a better CAD system. DOS certainly had its limitations that made it shitty for a lot of jobs you were better off with a Mac or Amiga for, everything had its niche.
>>61722330
>>61722343
Yeah, man, but the 386 didn't really start making it into PCs in real numbers for another couple of years. Shit was glacial. Wasn't just a PC thing, either, it took Apple three years to finally shove the 68020 into the Mac and fuck knows how long for the Amiga, guess they skipped it though so that doesn't count.

<autism>And yeah, Win/386 is 2.1x</autism>
