It wouldn't be unreasonable for GNU/Linux to surpass MacOS in the desktop market, what with ChromeOS. Even if you consider MacOS to take up the more generous amount of 10% of the market.

The uncertainty of free software and who's using it isn't just a desktop thing. Look at the server market. We know that ~60% of servers run either a BSD image (so basically FreeBSD) or GNU/Linux, but we don't have the ability to distinguish the two operating systems from one another, just because people may not want to disclose that they're using free software, and that's their prerogative.
>>

>>
>>61690959
>>61691228
Wrong. There are huge number of PCs running pirated Windows. A few stealthy basement dwellers won't overcome that with their unaccounted for Linux installs, and the true Linux market share might even be smaller than the figure we have on the graph.

Most of Linux users will be happy with market share grow, because it will eventually pull more attention from both programmers, who will participate in development and bugfixing, and companies, who will more willingly make their products for linux, because there is people who will use it. I thought that this gimmick would actually be neat in VR.
But then I considered that, if you were interfacing with your computer via VR, you could be inside that cube instead, and the cube could be massive. It could have 80K IMAX screens per side, and you spin it around you. Or, better yet, you just have windows in free space that you position at will, independent of a set planar display. You could have network and hardware activity and temperatures floating on the "ceiling". You could wave a slack window down as a peripheral box in your lap as massive IDE windows surround you.
And then you reach for your mug which is only visible in meatspace and spill coffee all over your desk.
