If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Vega soon.

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Going to re-post my question from the last thread.

Is this a good motherboard and a good price for this motherboard? I'm hoping to grab an R7 1700 when they are back in stock on amazon and I want to overclock to roughly 3.6-3.7ghz on all cores.

Also, is this good RAM for hitting 3200mhz?

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4n648d/gskill-tridentz-series-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-3200-memory-f4-3200c16d-16gtzkw

I checked this particular motherboard's QVL on the ASUS website but couldn't find this particular ram kit on it. I found some that had similar product numbers up until a few of the digits but they also had different kit sizes and I am just a little confused about which memory to pick.
>>
>>61688422
Find the exact model or we cannot guarantee you anything.

On the list = 100% works and will boost to the speed on the kit.
Not on the list = Try your luck.
>>
>>61688422
why not a cheaper 320 from MSI
>>
>>61688332
Looking to buy an RX 580, but they are out of stock everywhere. I assume this is a common question, but when goes anyone expect them to come back in stock? Even the 1060's are low and expensive at the moment

Sadly, Ryzen doesn't have integrated graphics, so can't wait it off without.

>>
>>61688422
I've gotten 4x8gb tridentz rgb sticks to 3200mhz stable at 14CAS so you should be okay. I haven't attempted anything higher than that
>>
>>61688586
You can't buy one unless you're a miner and buy them in bulk or you buy one at a massively inflated price on eBay, get something else, as soon as they come in stock they'll disappear again within seconds.
>>
How's my build so far?
I'm trying to make it a combination of attractive and powerful, without spending extra on features that I won't use.

Can the A320 chipset overclock? I was hoping to do some overclocking on whatever board I got.

>>61688587
Are you happy with the features that this board offers? I have heard that the audio is pretty nice compared to some of the other motherboards out there. That's part of the reason that I am considering this one.

I know Ryzen tends to do better with higher RAM clocks, but is 3200mhz a significant improvement over 2933mhz? I'd like to get as much gaming performance as possible, but it's not my only concern so I'd be willing to sacrifice some if I can have stability.

You'll need B350 or X370 to overclock. B350 does it just fine.
>>
>>61688747
I don't use the on board audio on that system, it's piped out via HDMI in my setup. You shouldn't run any settings that aren't 100% stable through a memtest and stability test. That said 2933 is maybe 2% worse or so in the extreme case. I think techreports did a memory analysis that showed that

Dear Intel shills.
This is a reminder that the optimization in games DID come for AMD's FX chips, and the FX8350 outperforms the i5 2500K in most games.
The same will be true of Ryzen if it isn't already.
Future-proof is a thing.

OCing might require a new cooler too desu. I'm gonna try reapplying thermal post to see if it doesn't pull 50-60 °C in idle. The shitty cable management might cause a bit of that too.

Is there any game out there right now that justifies a $1000+ PC?

>>61689950
144fps is a lot more demanding than 60. If you're fine with 60 then not really.
>>
>>61689979
Is 144fps really that good? People told me g-sync was good and I got a monitor and I don't even notice it.

>>
>>61689950
Yes.

>>61690002
>Is 144fps really that good?
No, not really, unless you are super into competitive shooters. Just having a 144Hz monitor is enough even if you are only getting around 60FPS, it means you never need vsync which is fucking cancer.
>>
>>61690519
So don't get tearing unless your GPU is putting out frames higher than your monitor's refresh rate?
>>
Is BreadDipper going to make any sense for gaming what so ever? I'm still on a 2500K with a 1080Ti, and looking at getting BreadDipper when it comes out.

I would guess it will have zero performance improvement over Ryzen 7 right now, but is there any chance in a few more years games will use the amount of cores it has? I don't do any productivity work at all. Would Intel's Coffee Lake make more sense for what I want to use it for?
>>
>>61690529
With a 144Hz monitor you pretty much don't get any noticeable tearing at all, regardless of frame rate. It's still there but you'll stop caring and forget it exists within about 5 minutes.
>>
>>61690551
So why does adaptive sync exist?
>>
>>61690562
Adaptive sync is total shit and doesn't work, it's just an Nvidia marketing meme like most of their other technologies. Gsync works but you pay a premium for it.
>>
>>61690562
Adaptive vsync was conceived when 99% of people were still using 60Hz monitors, it's useless on a 144Hz panel. In theory it turns vsync on when you have FPS to match your refresh rate, and off below it, but it doesn't really work that well.

You aren't going to get a consistent 144FPS in any game anyway, so it's kind of pointless to worry about vsync.
>>
>>61690588
I meant G-sync. What is it good for if you don't get tearing with a 144 hz monitor?
>>
>>61690540
For games it wont be noticeable as the difference between Threadripper and Ryzen is quad channel memory and extra PCIe lanes.
>>
>>61690622
>if you don't get tearing
You do get tearing, but it's such a small amount it's not worth caring about. It's like the difference between 4x MSAA and Supersampling.

If you can, go to a store and use it and see if you care about it or not. Though I don't know if too many stores have demo 144Hz displays you can screw around with.
>>
>>61690622
Nvidia could also support freesync but instead they charge a premium for their own version. Which makes some good monitors cost more than they should.
>>
>>61690703

2400MHz RAM? You should go for 3200 or 2933 because Ryzen loves that speed. In some games you can see close to 20% increased performance in 2400 vs 3200.
>>
>>61691162
>1) are all these parts compatible
Yes

>2) did i get the right ssd (m.2)
For your operating system, you're not going to notice a difference compared to a normal 2.5" SSD on a SATA connection. That said, Samsung Evos are damned good. Just don't expect it to be faster than a normal SSD.

>3) is there a cheaper psu i can get
>?Is the one i have ok
The one you have should be fine, but look at getting a G2 or G3 instead

>4) is the ram ok for ryzen? Im too poor for 3200 mhz samsung b-die but feel free to recommend other ram
Corsair vengeance ram is actually HIGHLY recommended because it generally has great compatibility with Ryzen and is fairly cheap. Good ram.

>5) is the gtx 1080 enough to play all games on very high at 1440p 60fps?
It's overkill. You could downstep to a GTX 1070, or an RX Vega 56 and get the performance you want

>6) i live in korea and found this cheap ass monitor, is it ok? (pic related)
144hz is overkill, especially if you're aiming for 60 fps. 144 hz monitors will support haming up to 144 fps. The monitor is overkill for your choices.

>7) any way i can make this build cheaper without losing performance
change the monitor for a 60hz monitor. I'd recommend a gaming monitor with some form of vsync. Each vsync technology is specific to a different manufacturer. If your graphics card is an AMD car, like the Vega RX 56 for example, you could get a fairly cheap vsync monitor. If you got an nvidia card though like a GTX 1070 or a GTX 1080, you have to pay out the ass for a monitor with G-sync.

AMD Vega cards are launching soon and prices were recently announced. a base model Vega RX 56 (which takes aim at the GTX 1070) will be $400 USD, while the top tier Vega RX 64 (taking on the GTX 1080) is $500.
All in all, the AMD platform in its entirety is cheaper.

Also, I would change the motherboard to one with better VRMs, and 4 ram slots. My personal recommendations are the MSI B350 Mortar and MSI B350 Tomahawk
>>61691188
stick to the Corsair ram
>>

>i live in korea and found this cheap ass monitor, is it ok? (Pic related)
I envy you. Yes it'll be good, they'll just be using a Samsung panel I presume. I have a Qnix monitor which is the same deal, no name Korean monitors are a steal for the price.

>recommending someone get a shittier monitor when he lives in fucking korea where all the world's monitors are made

I'm going to build a PC around October. I'm planning to buy a Ryzen 3 (1200 good or should I up to 1300x?) since it's a $800 build. Should I go for it or wait for Raven Ridge? I don't think it has the AM4 socket so that's one downside but is there any other advantage of getting an A12 over R3 besides iGPU?

It will have the AM4 socket. Bristol Ridge is just a placeholder and eventuall low budget chip until raven ridge hits the market.

That said there is no reason to go for raven ridge in an 800$ build, there is plenty of room for a decent dedicated GPU. You should even be able to fit an R5 1600 and a GTX 1060 in there as long as you already have all the periphery and aren't a AUS/NZ/CAD fag

you don't need an aftermarket cooler, even for some OC, the boxed cooler is really decent. But it will be more silent. If you're on a budget i wouldn't go for one and add one later should you decide that the noise level is to high/temperatures limit your OC room to much.

No idea about the monitor, in yurop prices many FHD/144Hz monitors aren't really worth it anymore since you can get decent 144Hz Screens for little more.

I would just like to know if this upgrade is appropriate or overkill for me. I already have a 980 so I think I'll wait a bit longer before upgrading my GPU. Monitor is 1080p 60Hz. Might upgrade that to 1440p 144Hz in the future but I'll be letting my wallet rest for a bit after this upgrade.

Build goals:
>Long lifespan
My current build is 7 years old, the only things I've updated are the GPU and an added SSD. It still works quite well, though it is noticeably getting worn out and has slowly but surely gotten noisier over the years which is starting to get a bit uncomfortable at this point. I'm hoping the new build will be able to last as long as this one has.

>Low noise
I'm a bit reluctant to pay this much for a new case, but if it is as silent as people say it is I think it'll be worth it. As for the CPU cooler, I'm not sure what's best between what I picked or a water cooler, or for that matter how to be sure a water cool will be compatible with my build.

>Gaming
That's pretty much the main thing I use my computer for, but since I haven't seen much improvements in graphical fidelity recently I think a 980 will be fine for now. I probably wont look to upgrade it until some major new game comes out like CP2077. I look somewhat forward to Destiny 2 on PC but it looks very well optimized so I think I'll be fine with what I have. Other than that I don't play particularly demanding games.

I've got the classic "stick or buy" problem
My 290 isn't cutting it anymore and I need a new gpu, which I've been saving for for the last few months.

Now the question is do I get a 1080 now, save even longer for a ti or wait for volta which could be 6 months + away when I really need it for this coming season's games.

I have a 1080/144 monitor. I'm also paying UK prices.
>>
>>61692185
sounds like it calls for a 1080
>>
>>61692062
>longevity
then get a ryzen 7 1700. The consoles, which are sadly the lead platform for most games nowadays, have 8 shitty weak x86 cores. The next gen consoles will have 8 a bit less weak cores, probably with SMT. Even intel will go to 6 cores/12T in their consumer platform with coffelake later this year/next year. At 60Hz you won't have any disadvantages with the R7 1700 and when you make the switch to a 144Hz monitor you might have none at all. If you for whatever reason don't want to go for the ryzen and your current system isn't completly dead wait for coffelake i guess. It won't be compatible with current LGA1151 boards.

>that much money for a case
absolutely not necessary. An sound dampened case with decent layout and good fans can be had for less than 100, like a nanoxia deep silence 3.

>cooler
AiOs are louder than aircoolers with good fans due to the pump and them requiring high pressure fans to push air through the dense radiator fins. Also the pump often craps out after a few years.
>>
>>61692185
A 1080 is better than a 980 Ti, which is still excellent.
>>
>>61692185
should've sold a month ago, used 290s were going away on ebay for 250+$. Their price spiked to absolute insane levels due to crytomining fags. You might still sell it for a decent price, in that case upgrade now. If that's not possible i'd personally wait for the next gen, upgrading in the middle (or in your case, in the end) of a current generation always sucks.
>>
>>61692185
>>61692214
what i forgot to add, decent AiOs offer better temperatures than aircoolers, which might be necessary if you want to OC some chips, for others an aircooler is fine. Depends on the case.

>Long lifespan
>7700K
Nah, it's a really terrible choice from a longevity perspective. It's consistently on top in games right now, but that will change big time in 2-5 years. Games are starting to use more cores, and when they do, Ryzen's cores are 20-30% weaker, but a 1700 has 2x as many threads. It has far more potential in a long term scenario. It's like now how the FX-8350 is beating the 2500K in some newer games, despite the 2500K absolutely shitting all over the FX chip on it's release. The only people who should buy a 7700K right now are the same people who buy the latest Nvidia X80Ti every single year, i.e., the people who have money to throw away every year on the latest and greatest right then and there.

If you want longevity, either buy the Ryzen 1700 now (or 1700X if you don't want to overclock), or wait until the end of the year and pick up a 6 core Coffee Lake if Intel is your preferred choice.

As for your other stuff, in my experience a case doesn't really do much to insulate sound, so I wouldn't bother. Just focus on good ventilation, as the more air you can provide your components the slower their fans will spin, and thus make less noise. Also than BeQuiet cooler isn't bad, but the NHD15 and Phanteks PHTC14PE are better choices.

I wish I could've sold it during the boom but it's being recycled.

I really don't want to get fucked by volta shitting on the 10 series in 6 months like what happened to the maxwell cards. This gpu is going to need to last me 2 years or so because I'm poor and I can't dump all my income on pc parts

I suppose a reasonable compromise would be to get a 1080 for around ÂŁ400 used today.
>>
>>61692302
>I really don't want to get fucked by volta shitting on the 10 series in 6 months
It's looking like that isn't going to happen, and anyway the 1180Ti or whatever they'll call it is like 9 months out.

What games are you playing at 1080p where a R9290 isn't cutting it anymore? Are you sure it isn't a CPU limitation?
>>
>>61692062
Getting 4 core CPU at this point is silly. Ryzen 1600 or 1700 (don't get the X versions, they have no reason to exist) are better choices depending on how much you want to bank on future being more core/thread dependent and how long do you think you'll go on without another full system upgrade.

Ryzen only loses on higher average frame rate by ~10-20% while offering higher minimums and smoother frames (frame times). With your 60hz monitor you shouldn't get Intel because you wouldn't even see the difference. You should try to play on 144hz monitor at a friend's place first and seeing the difference for yourself before taking the plunge because maintaining those frames can be quite hard especially if you're planning on going 1440p and then not upgrading for several years.

980 is roughly equivalent to 1060 so you'll be fine waiting for Volta or whatever the next thing Nvidia releases.

Getting a case that expensive is waste. The noisiest parts will always be fans and the vibrations they cause. That can be fixed with bigger, lower RPM fans and dampening the vibrations with rubber screws (they're quite cheap) and some fans even have rubber on the fan chassis.

I'm on a 480 4gb that I bought last October as a mid-range update from my (old) 7870. I bought the 480 in hopes that Vega would be out in ~5 months or so and I could buy it.

Fast forward to this week, almost a year later, Vega is finally around the corner and lookin' to be kinda meh. At this point, is it worth just...waiting for Volta/Navi/whatever's next?

I game on 1440p 144hz (sorta kinda Freesync) and also have a VR headset. Suggestions?
>>
>>61692367
Obviously just wait. Prices are inflated to shit right now, without spending a silly amount of money anything you get will just be a sidegrade. If you wanted a new card you should have bought a 1080 like a year ago.
>>
>>61692360
Going from 60 to 144Hz is a massive change. Most people wouldn't be going back if most of what they do on a system is gaming. And not being able to feed a 144Hz 1440p screen isn't really a problem either. Most people keep their monitors longer than their GPUs/systems in general, and even if not, they scale up just fine if you lower the resolution to 1080p to get more FPS and you still get the additional space 1440p offers for desktop/movie usage or less demanding games

not to bad because they are useless for mining and generally out of the pricerange of the cards that are used for mining. But they're more than a year old now and the successor is closer than the release date.
>>
>>61692397
And because it is such a big change no one wants to go back to 60 as even desktop looks awful in comparison.
>>
>>61692400
Have you checked CPU/GPU utilization in afterburner and are sure it's a GPU limitation? I'm kind of surprised a 290 is running of steam at 1080p in any game quite honestly. I just got rid of one like two months ago (sold it for a friend so I didn't have much time with it) and if I remember right it had no problems running shit like Crysis 3 and GTA5 on a mix of high/ultra at a relatively consistent 60FPS at 1440p.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a Full-ATX case for the MSI B350 Tomahawk motherboard?

I heard the VRMs on it heat up like a bitch, so I need something with good ventilation and can fit a typical Vega RX 56/64.

I don't trust my own judgment here because the last time I did in 2013, I got a Sentey Arvina case, which, while ventilated well, is a bitch to clean (no easy filter access) and the optical drives get caught on the front panels all the fucking time.

tl;dr: Case window super tinted, is there a way to get a clear window either from asking NZXT or a custom seller.

So II really love the NZXT 440. It's coincidentally perfectly leveled with my monitor which makes this very nice straight line on top of my desk.

What's killing me is all the work I put to making the guts look nice for it to be hidden by the tinted window.

I tried buying an led to just lay above to give it some illumination. Aside from every color being disappointing or obnoxious aside from blue it's still very dim due to tinted windows so led is out.

Does anyone know if there is a seller that can craft a new side panel for the case?

CPU cooler manufacturers mostly got their shit together before AM4 boards even hit the market. Problem is that they can't update the stock in the delivery chain.

But as you said, noctua will happily send a mounting bracket if it doesn't come with it. it really should though, the cooler is well liked (best aircooler after all) so there should be plenty of throughput at vendors

It's how it always has been, there's a tonne of older GPU's that can be BIOS flashed to be the card above it. If a card can't be BIOS flashed, there's a good chance it started life as the chip/card above it, and had parts lasered off to make it weaker, it's just part of the binning process. CPU's are the same. Same as when you buy a certain model of car, the next two or three engine tiers above it might just have a different ECU flash giving it extra power, but it's the same exact engine.

Maybe they aren't the exact same, but they are extremely similar. The basic deal with European cars of late has been to remap the same engines with minor changes to shit like cooling or the turbos as you go up the tiers, and back in the 90's and early 2000's it would be roughly the same engine but bored out to different displacements.

G4560 - Update your bios, HOPE that Kaby Lake chips will still be available when you're upgrading

on all the games I play, it's the recommended amount. in the future, if I need more, I'll get more
Not everyone plays FPS.

Is it okay to install the OS on a mechanical drive?
>>
>>61695834
Guess there's no downside to that, I don't know how you're staying under 8GB though, even playing old shit I'm running way over that.
>>
>>61695858
sure, we've been doing that for decades. It's just slow as fuck
>>
>>61695897
I'll just partion both my sad and mechanical drives since they are both full
>>
>>61695858
no, before ssds we used either boot cds or flash storage. pc can run if its on a hdd cause of the rotations

Is this a good build?

Ryzen 5 1400
GTX 750Ti
16GB DDR4
Asus Prime B350-Plus
>>
>>61695962
no
>>
>>61695962
Only if you are poor.
>>
>>61695962
what speed is the DDR4? It makes a difference on Ryzen. The mobo and CPU are fine. That GPU is trash. if you already have it though, it'll do until the market stabilized.

Can my motherboard (Intel i7-6700) support a GTX 1050/1060 graphics card, or do I need to replace it?

Looking to spend about 300$ for a Motherboard+CPU+RAM replacement.
Running a 1060 6GB currently, mainly spend my time emulating consoles and doing some encoding.
Which CPU should I aim for?
>>
I wanna play games, money isn't a problem. should I wait for the new GPUs?

Anyone can give an advice on motherboard manufacturers for AMD ? Specifically Ryzen 51600 and B350 chipset. If all are decent, maybe you guys could filter out shit/good boards from this list:
>ASRock AB350M Pro4
>ASUS PRIME B350M-A
>Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3
>Gigabyte GA-AB350M-D3H
>MSI Bazooka
>MSI Mortar
>MSI Mortar Arctic
The MSI seem shit just from the model names, but I don't have more choices so if they're decent, why the fuck not
>>
>>61696547
Avoid ASSRock and Niggabyte
>>
>>61696547
they're all shit desu
>>
>>61696547
Asrock and Gigabyte aren't very good. Asus mATX boards lack heatsink. So if you're looking for mATX you only really have MSI to choose from.
>>
>>61696577
What's wrong with ASRock ? I'm asking for a friends build, but I bought ASRock mobo for my own i5-6500 build a year ago, seemed the best choice then
>>
>>61696611
Budget brand, only get them if you're poor
>>
>>61696611
Poor VRMs which means not very good overclockers and that's exactly the thing you should be doing with Ryzen.
>>
>>61696651
ASRock B350 is one of the few that have actual heatsinks instead of chucks of gaymer decorated aluminum.
>>
>>61696627
Meme, ASRock upgraded from budget brand when they split from ASUS
>>
>>61696679
No, they went from "ASUS' budget brand" to "That Dogshit brand that poor people buy"
>>
>>61696627
>>61696610
>t. i have no idea what i'm talking about
asus prime has the best VRMs out of all b350 boards
gigabyte is trash.
msi still has long boot issues an shit ram compatibility.
asrock ab350m is the best price/perf b350 mobo with pretty decent VRMs
>>
>>61696799
>msi still has long boot issues an shit ram compatibility.
Haven't had any ram compatibility issues with the b350 pc mate, but the boot times aren't great it seems, my 3 year old laptop (with ssd) boots up from cold just as fast.
Is this something they can fix with bios updates?
>>
>>61696799
Thank you for a seemingly informative answer without memery bullshit
As I understand you'd rather recommend the ASUS over ASRock if features likes ports and shit are similar?
MSI seems to advertise one of the best RAM supports actually, are they just lying or what ?
>>
>>61696468
if money isn't an issue, just buy a titan x now then once released get the new card,
>>
>>61696332
its standardized. Got an PCIe x16 slot? It supports any PCIe device you could want
>>
how are you supposed to update a bios the right way, rather than doing it from inside windows?
>>
>>61696953
by flashing it via the marked USB slot. Your mainboards manual has an entire chapter about it

really? i always just did it through windows before

it usually works. If it doesn't you brick your mainboard, so it's not really worth it taking chances

>Due to the limitation of AMD Ryzen™ processors, memory frequencies higher than DDR4 2666 MHz are supported only when using one DIMM per channel.
What the hell is this ? Do I understand correctly that it's either dual-channel or high frequency ? Which is better then ?

Obviously it's memory running well over 2666, dual channel on a Ryzen?
